• Can this method to convert a name to proper case be improved?

  I am writing a basic function to convert millions of names (one time batch process) from their current form, which is all upper case, to a proper mixed case. I came up with the following so far: public string ConvertToProperNameCase(string input) { TextInfo textInfo = new CultureInfo("en-US", false).TextInfo; char[] chars = textInfo.ToTitleCase(input.ToLower()).ToCharArray(); for (int i = 0; i + 1 < chars.Length; i++) { if ((chars[i].Equals('\'')) || (chars[i].Equals('-'))) { chars[i + 1] = Char.ToUpper(chars[i + 1]); } } return new string(chars);; } It works in most cases such as: JOHN SMITH - John Smith SMITH, JOHN T - Smith, John T JOHN O'BRIAN - John O'Brian JOHN DOE-SMITH - John Doe-Smith There are some edge cases that do no work like: JASON MCDONALD - Jason Mcdonald (Correct: Jason McDonald) OSCAR DE LA HOYA - Oscar De La Hoya (Correct: Oscar de la Hoya) MARIE DIFRANCO - Marie Difranco (Correct: Marie DiFranco) These are not captured and I am not sure if I can handle all these odd edge cases. Can anyone think of anything I could change or add to capture more edge case? I am sure there are tons of edge cases I am not even thinking of as well. All casing should following North American conventions too meaning that if certain countries expect a specific capitalization format, and that differs from the North American format, then the North American format takes precedence.

One announcement during the presentation was the plan to move m2e-wtp plugin into the m2e project at Eclipse. The project proposal was posted yesterday afternoon for those who are interested - http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/technology.m2e.m2e-wtp/. Jason said that m2e-wtp will not make it into the m2e Juno release but they expect the code to be transitioned over to Eclipse over the next six months. Getting the maven and wtp project models to play nicely together has been an issue for quite some time for our users. Hopefully this is a good step toward resolving those issues.

  Hello Community, I successfully send Mails via SMTP using my Rails App and my Postfix Server. Now I need to move to an Exchange: Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 that has POP3 and SMTP support enabled. I use actionmailer 1.2.5 and am not able to successfully login to the server while trying to send a mail. In case I use Mail.app sending and recieving works fine as long as I change the authentication schema to "Password". • How does Visual Studio decide the order in which stack variables should be allocated?

  I'm trying to turn some of the programs in gera's Insecure Programming by example into client/server applications that could be used in capture the flag scenarios to teach exploit development. The problem I'm having is that I'm not sure how Visual Studio (I'm using 2005 Professional Edition) decides where to allocate variables on the stack. When I compile and run example 1: int main() { int cookie; char buf[80]; printf("buf: %08x cookie: %08x\n", &buf, &cookie); gets(buf); if (cookie == 0x41424344) printf("you win!\n"); } I get the following result: buf: 0012ff14 cookie: 0012ff64 buf starts at an address eighty bytes lower than cookie, and any four bytes that are copied in buf after the first eighty will appear in cookie. The problem I'm having is when I place this code in some other function. When I compile and run the following code, I get a different result: buf appears at an address greater than cookie's. void ClientSocketHandler(SOCKET cs){ int cookie; char buf[80]; char stringToSend[160]; int numBytesRecved; int totalNumBytes; sprintf(stringToSend,"buf: %08x cookie: %08x\n",&buf,&cookie); send(cs,stringToSend,strlen(stringToSend),NULL); The result is: buf: 0012fd00 cookie: 0012fcfc Now there is no way to set cookie to arbitrary data via overwriting buf. Is there any way to tell Visual Studio to allocate cookie before buf? Is there any way to tell beforehand how the variables will be allocated? Thanks, Jason

• Can YAML have inheritance?

  This question involves a lot of symfony but it should be easy enough for someone to follow who only knows YAML and not symfony. My symfony models come from a three-step process: First, I create the tables in MySQL. Second, I run a symfony command (symfony doctrine:build-schema) to convert my table structure into a YAML file. Third, I run another symfony command (symfony doctrine:build-model) to convert the YAML file into PHP code. Here's the problem: there are some tables in the database that I don't want to end up in my symfony code. For example, let's say I have two tables: one called my_table and another called wordpress. The YAML file I end up with might look like this: MyTable: connection: doctrine tableName: my_table Wordpress: connection: doctrine tableName: wordpress That's great except the wordpress table has nothing to do with my symfony models. The result is that every single time I make a change to my database and generate this YAML file, I have to manually remove wordpress. It's annoying! I'd like to be able to create a file called baseConfig.php or something that looks like this: $config = array( 'MyTable' => array( 'connection' => 'doctrine', 'tableName' => 'my_table', ), 'Wordpress' => array( 'connection' => 'doctrine', 'tableName' => 'wordpress', ), ); And then I could have a separate file called config.php or something where I could make modifications to the base config: unset($config['Wordpress']); So my question is: is there any way to convert YAML into executable PHP code (as opposed to load YAML INTO PHP code like what sfYaml::load() does) to achieve this sort of thing? Or is there maybe some other way to achieve YAML inheritance? Thanks, Jason

  Hi folks, following Ryan Bates Screencast #114 I'm trying to generate endless pages using prototype. In difference to Ryan's showcase my URL called via the AJAX request shall be handled dynamically, cause I do not always call the same URL when the user reaches the end of my page. • How to find the latest row for each group of data

  Hi All, I have a tricky problem that I'm trying to find the most effective method to solve. Here's a simplified version of my View structure. Table: Audits AuditID | PublicationID | AuditEndDate | AuditStartDate 1 | 3 | 13/05/2010 | 01/01/2010 2 | 1 | 31/12/2009 | 01/10/2009 3 | 3 | 31/03/2010 | 01/01/2010 4 | 3 | 31/12/2009 | 01/10/2009 5 | 2 | 31/03/2010 | 01/01/2010 6 | 2 | 31/12/2009 | 01/10/2009 7 | 1 | 30/09/2009 | 01/01/2009 There's 3 query's that I need from this. I need to one to get all the data. The next to get only the history data (that is, everything but exclude the latest data item by AuditEndDate) and then the last query is to obtain the latest data item (by AuditEndDate). There's an added layer of complexity that I have a date restriction (This is on a per user/group basis) where certain user groups can only see between certain dates. You'll notice this in the where clause as AuditEndDate<=blah and AuditStartDate=blah Foreach publication, select all the data available. select * from Audits Where auditEndDate<='31/03/10' and AuditStartDate='06/06/2009'; foreach publication, select all the data but Exclude the latest data available (by AuditEndDate) select * from Audits left join (select AuditId as aid, publicationID as pid and max(auditEndDate) as pend from Audit where auditenddate <= '31/03/2009' /* user restrict / group by pid) Ax on Ax.pid=Audit.pubid where pend!=Audits.auditenddate AND auditEndDate<='31/03/10' and AuditStartDate='06/06/2009' / user restrict */ Foreach publication, select only the latest data available (by AuditEndDate) select * from Audits left join (select AuditId as aid, publicationID as pid and max(auditEndDate) as pend from Audit where auditenddate <= '31/03/2009'/* user restrict / group by pid) Ax on Ax.pid=Audit.pubid where pend=Audits.auditenddate AND auditEndDate<='31/03/10' and AuditStartDate='06/06/2009' / user restrict */ So at the moment, query 1 and 3 work fine, but query 2 just returns all the data instead of the restriction.   Okay, I'm just learning to use SPARQL to query data from dbpedia.org and I'm using dbpedia's http://dbpedia.org/snorql/ to run my queries in. I am trying to get a list of MusicalArtists based on searching for the same string over three fields like so: SELECT ?subject ?artistRdfsLabel ?artistFoafName ?artistDbpedia2Name WHERE { ?subject rdf:type <http://dbpedia.org/ontology/MusicalArtist> . OPTIONAL { ?subject rdfs:label ?artistRdfsLabel . } OPTIONAL { ?subject foaf:name ?artistFoafName . } OPTIONAL { ?subject dbpedia2:name ?artistDbpedia2Name . } FILTER ( str(?artistRdfsLabel) = "Stevie Nicks" || str(?artistFoafName) = "Stevie Nicks" || str(?artistDbpedia2Name) = "Stevie Nicks" ) } LIMIT 10 This works because "Stevie Nicks" has all three fields (rdfs:label, foaf:name, dbpedia2:name). But when I try to query by another MusicalArtist that doesn't have all three ("Depeche Mode" for example) I get no results. I have tried various things like BIND(COALESCE(?field,...,...) AS ?artistName) to filter by ?artistName and I also tried UNION but nothing seems to work. Can someone point out the error of my SPARQL ways? :) Thanks! Jason

• MSForms.ListBox Type Mismatch in Access

  I have an Access database where I use a Tab control (without tabs) to simulate a wizard. One of the tab pages has an MSForms.ListBox control called lstPorts, and a button named cmdAdd which adds the contents of a textbox to the List Box. I then try to keep the contents of the ListBox sorted. However, the call to the Sort method causes a type mismatch. • Use MySQL trigger to update another table when duplicate key found

  Been scratching my head on this one, hoping one of you kind people and direct me towards solving this problem. I have a mysql table of customers, it contains a lot of data, but for the purpose of this question, we only need to worry about 4 columns 'ID', 'Firstname', 'Lastname', 'Postcode' Problem is, the table contains a lot of duplicated customers. A new table is being created where each customer is unique and for us, we decide a unique customer is based on 'Firstname', 'Lastname' and 'Postcode' However, (this is the important bit) we need to ensure each new "unique" customer record also can be matched to the original multiple entries of that customer in the original table. I believe the best way to do this is to have a third table, that has 'NewUniqueID', 'OldCustomerID'. So we can search this table for 'NewUniqueID' = '123' and it would return multiple 'OldCustomerID' values where appropriate. I am hoping to make this work using a trigger and the on duplicate key syntax. So what would happen is as follows: An query is run taking the old customer table and inserting it in to the new unique table. (A standard Insert Select query) On duplicate key continue adding records, but add one entry in to the third table noting the 'NewUniqueID' that duped along with the 'OldCustomerID' of the record we were trying to insert. • Windows server 2003 default administrator password

  Sorry if this is an overly simplistic question, but I'm a bit stuck here. :) I need a windows machine for me to do some programming for class. Since I have my Macbook with me everywhere I go, I figured that it would be easiest to install a vm. And since I can get a copy of Windows server 2k3 for free via dreamspark, I thought I'd try to do that. Here's what happened though: I installed windows server (disk one). When the system booted up, vmware automatically installed VMWare tools and prompted me to restart. There was also a prompt to start the installation of disc 2, but I figured it would be better to restart before doing that. When the machine came back up, I was prompted to log in as the administrator. The problem is that I wasn't prompted to make an administrator account or password. Is there a default password I can use? I've tried all the obvious ones (blank, password, etc) and googling, but I didn't come up with anything.

• NHibernate: QueryOver<> help

  Hi, I'm just starting out with NHibernate and I'm having trouble with running more complex queries. I have entities with a list of tags attached. The user will provide two lists of tags, include and exclude. I need to find all the entities that have all of the include tags, and exclude any entites that have any tag in the exclude list. Below is my first effort- which is clearly wrong as its listing all Display objects that have any of the include tags rather than all! • Exporting to PNG from Adobe Illustrator cutting off edges

  I created a 40px x 40px image in Adobe Illustrator CS4. I saved as an .ai file and then tried to export as a PNG. Adobe Illustrator automatically crops the background and tightens the export to a rect around all the objects which if fine. In this case, I am not working edge to edge so my image is not quite 40px wide. But, unfortunately, Illustrator is not exporting the entire image. I end up with an image that is 34px wide. Indeed, the icon I draw starts on the left hand side but the right edge of my object cut off. Any ideas why this is happening? I can't imagine Illustrator CS4 can't correctly to export to PNG.

• Using a UITextView in a UITableViewCell with a UIKeyboard

  I have a simple UITableView that has two cells. Cell 0:0 consists of a UITextField we'll call the title and Cell 0:1 consists of a UITextView we'll simply call a note. Cell 0:0 (the text field) is a standard size, one row cell. I'm therefore trying to fill the rest of the screen up with Cell 0:1 so I return a larger height for it. This all displays just fine and I'm using most of the iPhone real estate pretty efficiently at this point. Now, when a user wants to edit one of these cells, he need only click in the appropriate textfield or textview. If a user clicks in the textfield of Cell 0:0, all is well and the keyboard slides up from the bottom. My problem occurs when a user clicks into the the textview (Cell 0:1). No matter what I try, the UITableView wants to slide the entire table view up and that generally put the UITextView in Cell 0:1 halfway out of sight. What I want to do is two fold, I'm registered for when the keyboard will appear and in that method, I'd like to shrink the UITextView in Cell 0:1 as well as shrink the UITableViewCell itself so that the keyboard doesn't have to be smart and think it has to slide the UITableViewCell into view. Unfortunately, no matter what I try, the UITableView slides up. I just want the UITableView to stand still and I want the cell to animate up/shorter with the keyboard. It appears that, by the time the keyboard is actually animating into the screen - it is to late to adjust the cell size. The UIKit has already made up it's mind that it is going to scroll the UITableView.

• Consuming "Event Tracing for Windows" events

  An answer to this question has led me to look into using "Event Tracing for Windows" for our tracing needs. I have come across NTrace, which seems to be a good way to produce ETW events from C# code (using the XP-compatible "classic provider" model). However, I am unable to find an easy way to consume these events - to see them in real-time and/or log them to a file. The only way I have found is that described in the NTrace documentation: using a tool which is only available as part of the Windows DDK. In the case of a complex problem in the field, we may need to ask the user to produce a file containing a trace. We can't ask users to download the DDK or carry out a number of complex operations in order to do this. Is there a straightforward, user-friendly way to log ETW events to a file? Also, is it possible for someone to consume ETW events on Windows Vista/7 if they are not running as administrator?

• Getting JRuby to work in RubyMine

  I setup the proper SDK because all my ruby code will compile but RubyMine complains that it can't find the any of my java classes? Is this a flaw or is there a way to get it to recognizewhere the classes are? Here is my code, I have underlined all the things its complaining about require 'java' include_class 'java.awt.event.ActionListener' include_class 'javax.swing.JButton' include_class 'javax.swing.JFrame' class ClickAction include ActionListener def action_performed(event) puts "Button got clicked." end end Is there a way around this because I'd love to buy RubyMine if it's able to inform me of what Java classes and methods I can pick from. • UIToolbar UIBarButtonItem Alignment question

  I need to create a UIToolbar that has two UIBarButtonItems. The 1st button must be centered and the 2nd item must be right aligned. I understand and use Flexible spacing and it works great when I need to balance buttons across the UIToolbar, but with only two buttons, I can't seem to perfectly center the middle button. I've even initialized the view.toolbarItems array with NSArray *items = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:fixed, flex, center_button, flex, right_button, nil]; and set fixed.width = right_button.width ... but still, the center_button is never perfectly centered.

• Is there an algorithm for converting quaternion rotations to Euler angle rotations?

  Is there an existing algorithm for converting a quaternion representation of a rotation to an Euler angle representation? The rotation order for the Euler representation is known and can be any of the six permutations (i.e. xyz, xzy, yxz, yzx, zxy, zyx). I've seen algorithms for a fixed rotation order (usually the NASA heading, bank, roll convention) but not for arbitrary rotation order. Furthermore, because there are multiple Euler angle representations of a single orientation, this result is going to be ambiguous. This is acceptable (because the orientation is still valid, it just may not be the one the user is expecting to see), however it would be even better if there was an algorithm which took rotation limits (i.e. the number of degrees of freedom and the limits on each degree of freedom) into account and yielded the 'most sensible' Euler representation given those constraints. I have a feeling this problem (or something similar) may exist in the IK or rigid body dynamics domains. Solved: I just realised that it might not be clear that I solved this problem by following Ken Shoemake's algorithms from Graphics Gems. I did answer my own question at the time, but it occurs to me it may not be clear that I did so. See the answer, below, for more detail. Just to clarify - I know how to convert from a quaternion to the so-called 'Tait-Bryan' representation - what I was calling the 'NASA' convention. This is a rotation order (assuming the convention that the 'Z' axis is up) of zxy. I need an algorithm for all rotation orders. Possibly the solution, then, is to take the zxy order conversion and derive from it five other conversions for the other rotation orders. I guess I was hoping there was a more 'overarching' solution. In any case, I am surprised that I haven't been able to find existing solutions out there. In addition, and this perhaps should be a separate question altogether, any conversion (assuming a known rotation order, of course) is going to select one Euler representation, but there are in fact many. For example, given a rotation order of yxz, the two representations (0,0,180) and (180,180,0) are equivalent (and would yield the same quaternion). Is there a way to constrain the solution using limits on the degrees of freedom? Like you do in IK and rigid body dynamics? i.e. in the example above if there were only one degree of freedom about the Z axis then the second representation can be disregarded. I have tracked down one paper which could be an algorithm in this pdf but I must confess I find the logic and math a little hard to follow. Surely there are other solutions out there? Is arbitrary rotation order really so rare? Surely every major 3D package that allows skeletal animation together with quaternion interpolation (i.e. Maya, Max, Blender, etc) must have solved exactly this problem?

• NSFetchedResultsController not updating UITableView's section indexes

  I am populating a UITableViewController with an NSFetchedResultsController with results creating sections that populate section headers and a section index. I am using the following method to populate the section index: - (NSArray *)sectionIndexTitlesForTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { return [fetchedResultsController_ sectionIndexTitles]; } and now I've run into a problem. When I add a new element to the NSManagedObjectContext associated with the NSFetchedResultsController, the new element is saved and appropriately displayed as a cell in the UITableView ... except for one thing. If the new element creates a new SECTION, the new section index does not show up in the right hand margin unless I pop the UINavigationController's stack and reload the UITableViewController. I have conformed to the NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate's interface and manually invoke [self.tableView reloadSectionIndexTitles]; at the end of both these delegate methods: controller:didChangeSection... controller:didChangeObject... and while I can debug and trace the execution into the methods and see the reload call invoked, the UITableView's section index never reflects the section changes. Again, the data shows up - new sections are physically visible (or removed) in the UITableView but the section indexes are not updated. Am I missing something?
