• Cloud storage that works with rsnapshot?

  I’ve started using rsnapshot as my backup system for my home PC. I really like the idea of hard links and how they are handled. But I can’t find the best workflow. Currently I keep my snapshots on the same partition and will copy the newest snapshot to a pen-drive at the end of the week. Cloud storage is what I’m looking for. Dropbox doesn’t fit my needs, because there is no way to make Dropbox respect hard links — all snapshots are treated as full snapshots. Renting a server is pretty expensive, so my question is, are there better alternatives for backup in the cloud? I would like to benefit from hard links and send only incremental backups, just like I do with my local host.

• After last update Unity no longer works

  An hour ago I installed latest updates and now Unity doesn't work anyomore, I only see desktop with icons. Manually searching I opened system monitor and found out only 400 Mb of RAM is taken which means complete Unity is turned off. Can someone help me to fix this. Since I'm crippled I probably won't be able to provide you with all details you need because I don't have window borders, no right click menu, nothing, only Nautilus.

• 12.04 scanner works fine as super-user but is not recognised as a normal user

  I have an all-in-one printer Epson SX130, wich I have just tried to install. I got the printer working with no problem, but I couldn't set the scanner up. I have had another all-in-one printer before (Brother DCP-125C), and had just the same problem, so I decided to try the same trick I used to do then, running the scanning program as super-user: $sudo simple-scan and $ sudo xsane Once again, it worked just fine, and I could use the scanner. Anyhow, this solution is a little annoying, because I also have to change the permissions to the files I get scanning like this. I have been searching the internet for solutions and got to know this must have something to do with user groups permissions, but couldn't find a satisfying solution. Is there anyone with an idea? Thank you in advance.

  I have done several hours of searching and I am still looking for a few USB wifi adaptors that run in 12.04 with no additional driver installations or other fiddling. I am looking to plug in the adaptor and have the laptop recognize and start connecting. We have 30 older laptops with flaky internal wifi cards so I thought that if I could find a $10-$20 USB adaptor that work reliably in 12.04 I could plug it in and solve all my connectivity problems for a few hundred dollars.

• Installer says I'd need a wireless firmware, but WLAN works without it out of the box

  While installing 12.04.01 (Alternate) on a netbook (Samsung N150Plus), Ubuntu informed me that I'd need the firmware brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw. I skipped this step. If I understand this page correctly, the mentioned firmware is a WLAN driver. However, after the Ubuntu installation was completed, the WLAN worked out of the box. After a few minutes, Ubuntu informed me that there is a firmware update available, which would be the mentioned firmware. Do I need to install this? Is Ubuntu using some kind of "lite" WLAN driver and I might run into problems with certain networks in the future, if I don't use the firmware? Would there be benefits in using the firmware? (maybe longer runtime because of lower consumption?)

• Dreamweaver CS5 Test server works but cannot connect to host server through files window

  I've been managing this site for a long time and update coupons on it approximately every 60 days. For some reason, I'm not having problems: I opened DW CS5 today and made the changes necessary to update coupons. I was able to connect to the host server with no problem but most of my coupon images were not showing up. DW tells me I have 70 broken links, which can't be the case because I've reviewed them. Some links work and are the same as the broken links other than the file name. Unable to figure it out, I thought maybe restarting my Mac would help. However, upon logging back into DW, I am now unable to connect to the host server. I get an FTP error notice that the file doesn't exist or there is a permissions problem. Funny thing is, I can connect successfully if I test the connection through the Site Management window. I have connected to my host server through FileZilla and see all the files there, unfortunately, I still can't get the web pages to display the coupons. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, what is the solution? I feel like this is probably a simple fix, but I cannot for the life of me determine what it is! If anyone knows a solution, I'd really appreciate the help! -Toni

• Bridging 10GbE with 12.04 - bridging works but the bridging computer has no internet access

  I have been trying to get 12.04 bridging working with two 10GbE cards. I have 2 10GbE cards in a linux box being used only for this bridge, 1 with 2 10GbaseT ports and another with a single CX4 port. I have 2 client computers connected with 10GbaseT cards and the CX4 card connects to a procurve switch. I can get the bridging happening mostly the way that I want, The clients receive dhcp information from the dhcp server (not the bridging machine) and can connect to and properly see the rest of the network. Speeds are ok, not amazing but working on that is another matter. My problem is that the bridging machine has no internet access ... meaning I can't update anything or apt-get anything It can ping all other machines on the local network. I've tried the helpful hints from: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkConnectionBridge "Enabling Internet Use on the Bridging Computer" and get the following RTNETLINK answers: File exists but dhclient br0 does nothing for me :( I think if it is anything it a multiple route problem as both br0 and eth4 have ipaddresses ... even though I have only set it up so that br0 has one ... • mod_rewrite works within directory not on root

  I am having problem in my RewriteRule for the tags portion. What I am able to debug is that the rule is been triggered at least because the page "tags.php" is been rendered but without the URL parameters. This .htaccess file with the rules is within root for my sub-domain and has following content for tags postion. # Rewrite rule for tags RewriteRule ^tags/(\w+)/(\d+)/?$ tags.php?tag_name=$1&tag_id=$2 RewriteRule ^tags/(\w+)/?$ tags.php?tag_name=$1 RewriteRule ^tags/?$ tags.php?tag_name= Another problem that I ain't able to debug is that the similar .htaccess file exists for a directory within my sub domain and is working as expected with the necessary URL parameters also been available. • Ping works , but unable to do ssh

• Bluetooth pairing works in 10.10 but not in 11.04

  My laptop, a Compaq Presario V2000, has a built-in Bluetooth module that has worked well since at least Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I use it to pair with headphones and a mouse. These both worked great in Ubuntu 10.10 (and still do with a live CD) but I cannot pair to any Bluetooth device in Ubuntu 11.04, even from a live CD. I can see the Bluetooth module in lspci and when I try to set up a new device from the Bluetooth indicator my computer detects all Bluetooth devices around me but pairing always fails. At the moment I'm most concerned with getting my Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 paired.   I am creating a penny auction site using PHP yii framework. The main consideration of the system is to update the database records of all active auctions (max 15 auctions) with the current ticker timer. I am seeking for advice on how i should design the system where every auction item will have a its own countdown timer stored in the database and when someone bids the auction item, the counter resets to 2 min. Every users who are connected to the system should see the same countdown timer for that particular auction. I am little confused on how i should design the system. Will there be a performance issue when there are frequent updates to the database (Mysql) where 15 active auctions are updated every seconds, the countdown timer decreases by a second in the database table for the particular auction.   My goal is to create accurate reflections, sampled from a dynamic cubemap, for specific 3d objects (mostly lights) in XNA 4.0. To sample the cubemap I compute the 3d reflection vector in a classic way: half3 ReflectionVec = reflect(-directionToCamera, Normal.rgb); I then use the vector to get the actual reflected color: half3 ReflectionCol = texCUBElod(ReflectionSampler, float4(ReflectionVec, 0)); The cubemap I am sampling from is a RenderTarget with 6 flat faces. So my question is, given the 3d world position of an arbitrary 3d object, how can I make sure that I get accurate reflections of this object, when I re-render the cubemap. Should I build the ViewProjection matrix in a specific way? Or is there any other approach?

• Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

• Space (and pipe sign) works on occasion only

  I have an issue that when I try to write pipe sign "|" and space after that, I sometimes get wrong type of space (\240) and my command fails. This issue persists on different shells. How could I fix this? • Gnome 3 and compiz, everything works except Explode and Leaf Spread animations

  I am using 11.10 with Gnome 3, I have installed Compiz, and have got it functioning almost how I want it. I want my windows to Leaf Spread, which seems to work fine for a few minutes after I enable it and restart my machine. However, over the time of a few window closes, I notice that the objects are not showing up little by little until the Leaf Spread just doesn't show at all? This really isn't a big deal, but I'd like things to work properly. Can anyone shed some light on this?

• Every function key on laptop works except for brightness

  I have an Asus UX21A, and I'm pleased to discover that almost all the hardware functions and features work perfectly with Ubuntu 12.10. The only thing that is not working straight "out of the box" are the brightness keys. In theory, the screen brightness can be adjusted downward by pressing fn+f5, and adjusted upward by pressing fn+f6. Is there a way I can connect the monitor brightness settings to these function keys?
