  • Will Apple bundle the Mono Touch runtime with every iPhone?

    - by Zoran Simic
It strikes me as a good idea for Apple to negotiate with Novell and bundle the Mono Touch runtime (only the runtime of course) into every iPhone and iPod Touch. Perhaps even make it a "one time install" that automatically gets downloaded from the App Store the first time one downloads an app build with Mono Touch, making every subsequent Mono Touch app much lighter to download (without the runtime). Doing so would be similar in a way to adding Bootcamp to OS X: it would make it easier for C# developers to join the party, but that wouldn't mean these developers will all stick to C#... What convinced me to buy a Mac is Bootcamp - I figured I could always install Windows if I didn't like OS X (and I liked the hardware, so no problem there). 6 months later, I'm using OS X full time... Would there be any technical issues in doing so? I see only advantages for all parties, not one disadvantage to anyone (except maybe for the few unfortunate Apple employees who would have to test the crap out of the Mono Touch runtime before bundling it): Novell wins because Mono Touch becomes much more viable (Mono Touch apps become much lighter all of the sudden) Developers win because now there's one more tool in the tool belt Many C# Developers would be very interested by this Apple wins because that would bring even more attention to the platform, more revenue in developer fees, more potential great apps, etc Users win because less space is used by different Apps having copies of the same runtime accumulating on their devices Would there be a major technical obstacle in bundling Mono Touch to iPhone OS? Edit: Changed the title from "Should" to "Will Apple bundle the runtime?", I think the consensus on predicting that means a lot to those considering going with Mono Touch.

  • IMAP protocol support in different email servers

    - by raticulin
Having to interact with several different email servers via IMAP (using javamail), I have found that there is a very different level of support for IMAP features among them. The lack of support of some features has resulted in more developing time, more complicated code to deal with different support, worse perforamance due to not being able to SEARCH etc. So I would like to get some info on other servers and what level of support they provide. So far I have dealt with Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise (and to a lesser extend Exchange 2003 and 2007). I am particularly interested in most used one in unix/linux (Courier, Cyrus, Dovecot, UW IMAP) and also Zimbra, but feel free to add any you know. Also welcomed info about online services like gmail. Features that I consider (comment if you are interested in others and I'll add them. Custom flags Searching Custom flags Searching arbitrary headers Partial fetching Proxy authentication And what I have found so far (correct if I am wrong anywhere): Lotus Domino Custom flags yes Searching Custom flags yes Searching arbitrary headers yes Partial fetching ? Proxy authentication sort of, you can give some user permissions to access other users mailboxes and he will see them under his '\Other Users' folder Novell GroupWise Custom flags No Searching Custom flags No Searching arbitrary headers No Partial fetching ? Proxy authentication yes, you can use what is called a Trusted Application

  • Program freezing when syncing a ldap database (100+ entries added)

    - by djerry
    Hey guys, I'm updating a ldap database. I need to add a list of users to the db. I've written a simple foreach loop. There are about 180 users i need to add, but at the 128th user, the program freezes. I know ldap is really used for querying (fast), and that adding and modifying entries will not go as smooth as a search query, but is it normal that the program freezes while doing this? I'll post some code just in case. public static void SyncLDAPWithMySql(Novell.Directory.Ldap.LdapConnection _conn) { List<User> users = GetUsers(); int iteller = 0; foreach (User user in users) { if (!UserAlreadyInLdap(user, _conn)) { TelUser teluser = new TelUser(); teluser.Telephone = user.E164; teluser.Uid = user.E164; teluser.Company = "/"; teluser.Dn = ""; teluser.Name = "/"; teluser.DisplayName = "/"; teluser.FirstName = "/"; TelephoneDA.InsertUser(_conn, teluser ); } Console.WriteLine(iteller + " : " + user.E164); iteller++; } } private static bool UserAlreadyInLdap(User user, Novell.Directory.Ldap.LdapConnection _conn) { List<TelUser> users = TelephoneDA.GetAllEntries(_conn); foreach (TelUser teluser in users) { if (teluser.Telephone.Equals(user.E164)) return true; } return false; } public static int InsertUser(LdapConnection conn, TelUser user) { int iResponse = IsTelNumberUnique(conn, user.Dn, user.Telephone); if (iResponse == 0) { LdapAttributeSet attrSet = MakeAttSet(user); string dnForPhonebook = configurationManager.AppSettings.Get("phonebookDn"); LdapEntry ent = new LdapEntry("uid=" + user.Uid + "," + dnforPhonebook, attrSet); try { conn.Add(ent); } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } } return iResponse; } Am i adding too many entries at a time??? Thanks in advance.

  • SLES AutoYaST Script Validity Verification

    - by Xerxes
Does anyone here write their own customized AutoYaST scripts for building SLES servers? I'm not talking about generating them with yast2 autoyast. If so, have you found a way to verify the syntax? xmllint is good as far as telling you that the XML syntax is valid, but with an upto date DTD, it can't tell you anything more, and the shipped DTDs are out-of-date. I've opened a ticket with Novell on this, but who knows when and what I'll hear back.

  • File Access problems with SLES 10 SP2 OES2 SP1

    - by Blackhawk131
We have identified a couple of repeatable, demonstrable scenarios with unexplained rejected folder access on our servers for Mac users. Hopefully, this can be presented to Novell for a solution. What we did to demonstrate scenario 1; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder 4. on the Mac in that central location drag the created folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 5. on the PC rename that folder 6. on the Mac drag a file to that renamed folder, this should error with the following message; a. You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? b. Select skip, response is the filename is copied to the location with zero or small byte size. Try opening it and you get file is corrupted error message. What we did to demonstrate scenario 2; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder then create a subfolder 4. copy some content into the subfolder 5. on the Mac in that central location drag the created top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 6. on the PC rename that subfolder 7. on the Mac drag that top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should error on the Mac with the following; a. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for b. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for 8. on the Mac, if you open that subfolder you can see the file copied in step 4 above but, you can not open that file, you get the following message if you try; a. There was an error opening this document. You do not have permission to open this file. 9. on the PC drag some content into the top level folder 10. on the Mac you can open that file directly from the server or copy it locally, no problem, however-the subfolder is still corrupted or locked, whichever 11. on the PC rename the top level folder 12. on the Mac that same file just opened in step 10 above is now not accessible, get the following message; a. The document could not be opened. I have observed some variances in the above. For instance, a change on the PC side may take a moment before you can observer or act on the Mac side - kind of like the server is slow to respond. Also, the error message may vary. However, the key is once a folder, or subfolder, gets renamed by a PC, Mac problems commence. The solution is to create a new folder from a PC and copy the contents of the corrupted folder to the new folder and not rename the folder name. This has to be done on a PC because the corrupted folder is not accessible by a Mac user. Another problem that dovetails with the above is that we know certain characters are not allowed for PC folder or filenames. If a Mac user creates a folder with a slash in the file name, from the PC the user does not see that slash in the name. As soon as the PC user copies a file to that folder, the Mac user is locked from that folder. Will get the following error message; - Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. - (Error code - 50) In addition to the above mentioned character issue with folders, the problem is more evil with filenames. If, for example, you create a file with a slash in the filename on a Mac and copy it to the server you will get the following error message; - You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? Select either Stop or Skip buttons. It does not matter which button is selected. The file name gets copied to the destination location at a reduced size. Depending on the file type, the icon associated with the file may or may not be present. Furthermore, if you open that file on the server you will get the following message; - Couldnt open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that doesnt recognize. From the users perspective, if they are not observant of the icon or file size, they may disregard the error message and think their file has copied as intended. Only later do they discover the file is corrupt if they open that file. I want to make a note on this problem. It is the PC causing the issue. You can change folder and file names all day on a MAC and you don't have a problem as long as a character is not the issue. Once you change the file name or folder name from a PC the entire folder structure from that level down is corrupted. But it has to be resolved from a PC by creating a new folder and copying the contents to the new folder like stated above. Is something not configured correctly? • Change drive letter of DVD drive

    - by NickC
I am trying to use a Drive Maps GPO on Server 2012 - User Configuration - Preferences - Windows Settings - Drive Maps. Problem is I want to map a drive to D: but this is automatically assigned to the DVD drive. Question is can I prevent D: being used as the next drive letter when Windows 8 boots up? I seem to recall in early version of Windows, or maybe it was Novell, a first_drive environment variable for this purpose.

  • How to add a new attribute to an existing LDAP objectclass?

    - by David R.
I created a custom LDAP objectClass, but forgot a couple attributes before I added it to my OpenLDAP server. I followed the instructions on this Ubuntu doc page: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/serverguide/openldap-server.html I am running Ubuntu 12.04. So, how do I add a new MAY attribute to an objectClass that is already applied to the server? Specifically on OpenLDAP, but it would be good to know how for Novell eDirectory as well.

  • Hack Week 5.0

w00t! Next week is Novell's Hack Week, 5th edition - but I'm starting this Friday night. I'll spend the next week on two goals for Gendarme.Better handling of defects; andMaking it easier to contribute - and yes the first goal already fills a bit of the second one.I'll also spend some time in my VS2010 VM. I need to do this to ensure the unit tests are executing correctly on Windows / MS.NET. There has been a few failures in the past, mostly because of small, legit differences between xMCS and CSC,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Xamarin Wins Funding, Microsoft Builds Repair Tool

Let's focus on the Xamarin news first. Xamarin is a young company with a phoenix-like history. Founded in May of 2011 by Miguel de Icaza and the rest of the team that created Mono, Xamarin got its start, effectively, as Ximian (de Icaza's previous company). Ximian was founded way back in 1999, and created Mono, which TechCrunch describes as an open source project that brings Microsoft's .NET development framework to non-Microsoft operating systems like Android, iOS and Linux. Novell acquired Ximian inn 2003, and continued to fund Mono's development. But apparently, when Attachmate bought No...

  • Confusion about Mono?

    - by emalamisura
Ok, so I was perusing the mono site and noticed there are Novell tools I can purchase for Visual Studio that will let me choose to compile in Mono? My confusion is, if I am using a tool set such as MVC 2 and other Frameworks, and I use those tools to compile to mono, how exactly does that play into things? I mean don't those tool sets need to be recompiled using Mono?

  • mac osx active directory authentication and linux samba share problems.

    - by Matt Delves
As a precursor, the network setup is one that includes a combination of Novell Netware servers as well as Windows Servers and Linux servers. I've successfully been able to bind my mac to the Windows Domain and can login without any problems. I've been able to mount shares without needing to resupply login credentials to any windows based share. The problem I've found is that when I'm attempting to mount a share from a linux server, it is asking to resupply the login credentials. Has anyone experienced this kind of problem. The linux servers are a combination of SLES 10 and 11 and RHEL 4 and 5. Thanks, Matt

  • XSP2 hangs after some time

    - by Sebi
I'm running a REST/JSON webservice (SVC) using xsp2 (and xsp2 through Apache/mod_mono). After some hours, the service just hangs and outputs a timeout after about 5 minutes. This can only be solved by restarting xsp2. Sometimes multiple restarts are needed to get it running again. I've made a small sample webservice simply returning a "pong". The example is available in the bug report: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=608158 The bug can sometimes be reproduced following these steps: Steps to Reproduce: 1. start xsp2 (webservice) 2. request http://[server]/WSPing.svc/ping Actual Results: After some time, I always get timeouts. I'm running a gentoo linux as a XEN DomU and i'm using Visual Studio to build and publish the service. Any hints???

  • Debian Server Daemon: File sync

    - by Gehk
Hello, I'm looking for a way to (auto) sync files on some pcs over the internet and save/backup them on my server. Just like Dropbox and other services like that. I found iFolder (by Novell), but it's not made for debian (i think it would still compile). I don't know if it's made for an webserver or just home server. Another way would be FTP, I don't know clients (i use ubuntu and windows on my pcs), which autoupload new/edited files. There is also svn/csv, but they are quite slow (afaik), and I don't know if there are suited for this. Someone got an idea? Thanks.

  • Is it possible to hide folders/subfolders from users based on permissions?

    - by Uwe Keim
Having a Windows Server 2008 R2 that has a share with lots of nested folders, I want to be able to only show certain folders to certain AD users/AD user groups. Is it possible to configure the permissions on single folders, so that clients that connect with Windows XP/Windows 7 to the share on the Windows 2008 R2 server only see those folders for which they have "view" permission? Other clients should not see the folders at all in Windows Explorer. I was told that this seems to be a standard feature on Novell networks.

  • Sudden restart when Ubuntu almost loaded from disc.

    - by Wesley
Hi all, Here are the specs beforehand: ECS K7SEM motherboard AMD Duron 900MHz 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM The Best Power MT-500P 500W PSU Integrated graphics No hard drive DVD-ROM - will update with brand & model Now, I was starting up this machine after it was left outside for 3 months in winter weather. (I got this from a friend.) I was able to get it started and tried to load Ubuntu from the DVD-ROM. It was fairly successful and got up to the point when the Ubuntu logo is glowing. However, when Ubuntu was about to go to the main screen, the computer crashed and automatically rebooted. Is there any reason why this is happening? Also, I should mention that when I try to hit Delete on the BIOS screen to go to Setup, it only shows a screen with four lines saying something Novell something... I will edit with exact lines. Should I be resetting the BIOS or something? Thanks in advance.

  • Bad disks in ancient server

    - by Joel Coel
I have a 1998-era Netware 3.12 server that runs everything on our campus: general ledger, purchasing, payroll, student information, grades, you name it. The server has an Adaptec RAID controller with two volumes: RAID 1, 2 17GB scsi disks, Seagate ST318417W RAID 5, 3 4GB scsi disks, 2 Seagate ST34573W and 1 ST34572W. We are currently in the early stages of a project to replace this system, but you don't just jump into a new system like that and so I need to keep this server running until at least November 2011. This week we had not one but two hard drives fail. Thankfully they are from different volumes and we're able to keep running for the moment, but given the close nature of these failures I have serious doubts that I'll be able to avoid catastrophic failure from this server through the November target as is without restoring the RAID redundancy — it'll only take one more drive failure anywhere and I'm completely hosed. We are fortunate enough to have exact match "spares" lying around for both drives, but the spares are in unknown condition. I tried swapping just them in, but the RAID controller isn't smart enough to handle this and it renders the system unbootable. As for the RAID controller itself, there is utility I can get into during POST via a Ctrl-A shortcut, but I can't do much useful from there. To actually manage volumes I must first boot in to Netware, at which point I can use CI/O Array Management Software Version 2.0 to actually look at volume information. I suspect that the normal way to manage things is to boot from a special floppy with the controller software on it, but that floppy is long gone. Going through the options in the RAID software, I think the only supported way to replace a disk in an existing RAID volume is to physically add the disk, boot up and configure it as a "spare" for a volume, force the volume to use the spare to replace an existing down disk (and at this point I'm only guessing) so that the down disk becomes the spare, repair the volume, remove the spare from the volume, and then shut down and remove the disk. Then start all over for the other failed disk. All this amounts to a lot of downtime, assuming I can even make it work and that my spares are any good. As for finding reliable spares, I have no clue where to even begin looking to find a new 4GB scsi drive, or even which exact scsi system I'm looking for, as it's gone through a few different iterations over time. Another option is to migrate this to a virtual machine (hyper-v), but all previous attempts we've made in this area have failed to get very far. When this machine was installed I was just graduating from high school, and so it requires lower level knowledge of netware and dos than I ever developed, or if I did have since forgotten (I'm not exactly a dos neophyte, either). Part of my problem is this is a high-use server, and taking it down for a few days to figure things out isn't gonna fly very well. As for the question, I'm looking for anything that might be helpful in this situation: a recommendation on a place to find good spares from this era, personal experience repairing RAID volumes using a similar controller or building a hyper-v vm from an old netware server, a line on a floppy with better software for the RAID controller, recommendation on a good Novell consultant in Nebraska that would be able to put things right, a whole other option I haven't considered yet, etc. Update: For backups, we have good (recently verified via restore) backups of the data only -- nothing for the software that actually runs things. Update 2: Just a progress report that I currently have a working Netware 3.12 install in VMWare Virtual Server 2.0, thanks largely to the guide I found here: http://cerbulescubogdan.blogspot.com/2010/11/novell-netware-312-on-vmware.html The next steps are preparing empty netware volumes to match the additional volumes on my existing server, taking a dump of everything on the C:\ drive and netware volumes on my existing server, and figuring out from that information what modules need added to netware, installing my licenses (we do still have that disk, if it's any good), and moving data over. I have approval to bring the server down for a week after the first of the year (sadly not before), so, aside from creating empty volumes, the rest of the work will have to wait until then. Final Update (Jan 5, 2011): I was able to get spares working in both raid arrays without data loss this week. Both are now listed by the controller as "FAULT TOLLERANT" (yay!). I was also able to build on the progress from my last update and now have a functional "spare" server in VMWare Server 2.0. The spare can run and use our erp software, but I can't put it into production because I can't (yet) print from that box (and I have no idea why). Even so, this VM will do in a pinch if I have no other choice, and between it and the repaired RAID arrays I'm comfortable pushing on until I can junk the machine in November.

  • In ADUC MMC, Advanced View, how to get Attribute Editor tab on the result of a Find?

    - by geoffc
In Win2008 MS added a new Tab on objects in ADUC. Called Attribute Editor it is like Novell Console One's Other tab, or an arbitrary LDAP editor view, or an ADSI Edit style view. Basically it shows all allowed attributes for the object class, and allows you to edit according to your permissions. You need to enable Advanced Options in the View menu before it shows up. This is great, however it only shows up when you browse the directory tree and select an object. If you use the Find tool and open an object Attribute Editor is not shown. How annoying! Especially if your domain has more than 2000 users in a single container, then you almost must use Find to get to an object. Is there any way to make the Attribute Editor tab show up after using Find to open an object?
