  • SO-overflow induced passivity - how to cope?

    - by Ruben
After not really working on my pet project for a while, I discovered Stackoverflow and upon perusing it more intensely I was quite amazed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I found eye-openers here highlighting many of the mistakes I made, I first wanted to fix everything. However, it's a pet project for a reason: I'm self-taught and I'm studying psychology, so programming skills can never become priority one (though it often helps, even in this field). Issues that stuck out were numerous security issues (e.g. CSRF-prevention and bcrypt eluded me) not object-oriented (at least the PHP part, the JS-part mostly is) no PHP framework used, so many of my DIY takes on commonly-tackled components (auth, ...) are either bad or inefficient really poor MySQL usage (no prepared statements, mysql extension, heard about setting proper indices two days ago) using mootools even though JQuery seems to be fashionable, so there's more probably always going to be better integration with services I'd like to use (like google visualization) So, my SO-induced frenzy turned into passivity. I can't do it all (soon) in the rather small amount of spare time I can spend on working on my project. I can leave some of the issues be in good conscience (speed stuff: an unfinished & unpublished project will never become popular, right?). No clear conscience without good security though and if I don't use a framework for auth and other complex stuff I'll regret having to do it myself. One obvious answer would probably be going open-source, but I think the project would need to become more impressive before others would commit to it. I can't afford to employ someone either. I do think the project deserves being worked on, though. How should I tackle it anyway? What's the best practice for little-practice people?

  • what is stack overflow

    - by Dimitris Baltas
Back in the days as freshmen in University, when programming in C on Unix machines, a "stack overflow" error on run-time would occur causing a lot of thought on what went wrong. What exactly is "stack overflow" in programming? What are the possible reasons for its appearance? Can it occur in all programming languages? Does it have other names?

  • iGoogle Stack Overflow Gadget [closed]

    - by Charango
Since SO's question database is becoming an excellent first point of call for finding answers to coding problems, some people (like me) might like to be able to fire up searches from their iGoogle home page, among the other searches you might launch from there. I've created a very simple gadget to do this, and put the source below. My hope is that this might provide a foundation on which community members with better ideas for performing this function, or ideas for enhancing it, can update it. Perhaps we could make it configurable to search via a site scope search from Google and / or a question search, for instance. I've hosted and registered this first version but if anyone makes changes and can host a new version / new pics elsewhere, please feel free. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <Module> <ModulePrefs title="Stack Overflow Search" author="Community Wiki" author_email="[email protected]" author_affiliation="Stack Overflow" author_location="The Internet" author_aboutme="All sorts" author_link="http://stackoverflow.com" author_quote="Hofstadter's Law: It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law." description="Stack Overflow is rapidly becoming one of the best resources for finding answers to your programming questions. • Stack overflow code golf

    - by Chris Jester-Young
To commemorate the public launch of Stack Overflow, what's the shortest code to cause a stack overflow? Any language welcome. ETA: Just to be clear on this question, seeing as I'm an occasional Scheme user: tail-call "recursion" is really iteration, and any solution which can be converted to an iterative solution relatively trivially by a decent compiler won't be counted. :-P ETA2: I've now selected a “best answer”; see this post for rationale. Thanks to everyone who contributed! :-)

  • Buffer Overflow errors when reading ConfigDelay and Manufacturer info from registry

    - by peter
Hi All, This is a strange driver error which doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I am running an application developed in C# .NET which our company develops. I was monitoring the application using process monitor and noticed that it accesses the registry a lot. The output on Process Monitor looks like this, Operation Result Path RegQueryValue Success HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SWMUXBUS\SW_MODEM\7&6c4af30&0&5&0004\Driver RegQueryValue Success HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Properties RegQueryValue Success HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Default RegQueryValue Success HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\InactivityScale RegQueryValue Name Not Found HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\PowerDelay RegQueryValue Name Not Found HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\ConfigDelay RegQueryValue Buffer Overflow HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Manufacturer RegQueryValue Buffer Overflow HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Model RegQueryValue Name Not Found HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Version The app is reading this stuff every 5 seconds from the registry, so I would ask a few questions, 1) What is this stuff 2) Why is the app reading this stuff 3) Why is it saying 'Buffer Overflow' 4) Could this cause performance problems for my app? From what I can see the app does not explicitly read this stuff, so I think this relates to a driver on the machine (which is a netbook)

  • stack overflow problem in program

    - by Jay
    So I am currently getting a strange stack overflow exception when i try to run this program, which reads numbers from a list in a data/text file and inserts it into a binary search tree. The weird thing is that when the program works when I have a list of 4095 numbers in random order. However when i have a list of 4095 numbers in increasing order (so it makes a linear search tree), it throws a stack overflow message. The problem is not the static count variable because even when i removed it, and put t=new BinaryNode(x,1) it still gave a stack overflow exception. I tried debugging it, and it broke at if (t == NULL){ t = new BinaryNode(x,count); Here is the insert function. BinaryNode *BinarySearchTree::insert(int x, BinaryNode *t) { static long count=0; count++; if (t == NULL){ t = new BinaryNode(x,count); count=0; } else if (x < t->key){ t->left = insert(x, t->left); } else if (x > t->key){ t->right = insert(x, t->right); } else throw DuplicateItem(); return t; }

  • LinqKit stack overflow exception using predicate builder

    - by MLynn
I am writing an application in C# using LINQ and LINQKit. I have a very large database table with company registration numbers in it. I want to do a LINQ query which will produce the equivalent SQL: select * from table1 where regno in('123','456') The 'in' clause may have thousands of terms. First I get the company registration numbers from a field such as Country. I then add all the company registration numbers to a predicate: var predicate = PredicateExtensions.False<table2>(); if (RegNos != null) { foreach (int searchTerm in RegNos) { int temp = searchTerm; predicate = predicate.Or(ec => ec.regno.Equals(temp)); } } On Windows Vista Professional a stack overflow exception occured after 4063 terms were added. On Windows Server 2003 a stack overflow exception occured after about 1000 terms were added. I had to solve this problem quickly for a demo. To solve the problem I used this notation: var predicate = PredicateExtensions.False<table2>(); if (RegNosDistinct != null) { predicate = predicate.Or(ec => RegNos.Contains(ec.regno)); } My questions are: Why does a stack overflow occur using the foreach loop? I take it Windows Server 2003 has a much smaller stack per process\thread than NT\2000\XP\Vista\Windows 7 workstation versions of Windows. Which is the fastest and most correct way to achieve this using LINQ and LINQKit? It was suggested I stop using LINQ and go back to dynamic SQL or ADO.NET but I think using LINQ and LINQKit is far better for maintainability.

  • OpenID like Stack Overflow

    - by eWolf
I want to create an OpenID login with PHP just like it can be found on Stack Overflow. I know there are many questions for this, but mine is different. If I understood it correctly, every OpenID is defined by a unique URL. But: If I hit the Google button on the Stack Overflow login page, one generic URL is inserted in the text field. Is this the direct URL to the OpenID server? And if it is, how do I have to pass the URL to this class?

  • Figuring out if overflow:auto would have been triggered on a div

    - by jerrygarciuh
Hi folks, // Major edit, sorry in bed with back pain, screwed up post One of the ad agencies I code for had me set up an alternate scrolling solution because you know how designers hate things that just work but aren't beautiful. The scrolling solution is applied to divs with overflow:hidden and uses jQuery's scrollTo(). So, this is married in places to their CMS. What I have not been able to sort yet is how to hide the scrolling UI when overflow:auto would not have been triggered by the CMS content. The divs have set heights and widths. Can i detect hidden content? Or measure the div contents' height? Any ideas? TIA JG

  • CSS : overflow : auto will not work under FireFox 3.6.2

    - by Michael Mao
Hello everyone: This is a CSS related question, I got one good answer from my previous question, which suggested to use some CSS code like overflow:auto together with a fixed height container. And here is my actual implementation : on uni server Please follow the instructions on screen and buy more than 4 kinds of tickets. If you are using IE8, Opera, Safari, Chrome, you would notice that the lower right corner of the page now has a vertical scroll bar, which scrolls the content inside it and prevent it from overflowing. That's what I want to have in this section. Now the problem is, this would not do in FireFox 3.6.2. Am I doing something not compliant to the CSS standard or FireFox has its own way of overflow control? You can inspect the elements on screen, and all controlling functions are done in one javascript using jQuery. All CSS code are kept in a separated file as well. According to the professor, FireFox would be the target browser, although the version was set to 2.0...

  • Need help on Coda slider tabs to move inside an overflow:hidden div

    - by Reden
I'm not too good at javascript. and hope I can get a bit of help. I'm using Coda Slider 2.0, and have designed it to where the tabs are another slider to the right of the main slider, and each item. Basically like this mootools plugin http://landofcoder.com/demo/mootool/lofslidernews/index2.1.html Problem is the items will not scroll. How do I make the items (or tabs to the right) scroll down as the slider rotates? Otherwise the slider will show the 4th slide but not scroll to the 4th item on the right, but Thanks everyone. Here is the Coda-Slider plugin: // when the DOM is ready... $(document).ready(function () { var $panels = $('#slider .scrollContainer > div'); var $container = $('#slider .scrollContainer'); // if false, we'll float all the panels left and fix the width // of the container var horizontal = true; // float the panels left if we're going horizontal if (horizontal) { $panels.css({ 'float' : 'left', 'position' : 'relative' // IE fix to ensure overflow is hidden }); // calculate a new width for the container (so it holds all panels) $container.css('width', $panels[0].offsetWidth * $panels.length); } // collect the scroll object, at the same time apply the hidden overflow // to remove the default scrollbars that will appear var $scroll = $('#slider .scroll').css('overflow', 'hidden'); // apply our left + right buttons $scroll .before('<img class="scrollButtons left" src="images/scroll_left.png" />') .after('<img class="scrollButtons right" src="images/scroll_right.png" />'); // handle nav selection function selectNav() { $(this) .parents('ul:first') .find('a') .removeClass('selected') .end() .end() .addClass('selected'); } $('#slider .navigation').find('a').click(selectNav); // go find the navigation link that has this target and select the nav function trigger(data) { var el = $('#slider .navigation').find('a[href$="' + data.id + '"]').get(0); selectNav.call(el); } if (window.location.hash) { trigger({ id : window.location.hash.substr(1) }); } else { $('ul.navigation a:first').click(); } // offset is used to move to *exactly* the right place, since I'm using // padding on my example, I need to subtract the amount of padding to // the offset. Try removing this to get a good idea of the effect var offset = parseInt((horizontal ? $container.css('paddingTop') : $container.css('paddingLeft')) || 0) * -1; var scrollOptions = { target: $scroll, // the element that has the overflow // can be a selector which will be relative to the target items: $panels, navigation: '.navigation a', // selectors are NOT relative to document, i.e. make sure they're unique prev: 'img.left', next: 'img.right', // allow the scroll effect to run both directions axis: 'xy', onAfter: trigger, // our final callback offset: offset, // duration of the sliding effect duration: 500, // easing - can be used with the easing plugin: // http://gsgd.co.uk/sandbox/jquery/easing/ easing: 'swing' }; // apply serialScroll to the slider - we chose this plugin because it // supports// the indexed next and previous scroll along with hooking // in to our navigation. $('#slider').serialScroll(scrollOptions); // now apply localScroll to hook any other arbitrary links to trigger // the effect $.localScroll(scrollOptions); // finally, if the URL has a hash, move the slider in to position, // setting the duration to 1 because I don't want it to scroll in the // very first page load. • Webservice creates Stack Overflow

    - by mouthpiec
    I have an application that when executed as a windows application works fine, but when converted to a webservice, in some instances (which were tested successfully) by the windows app) creates a stack overflow. Do you have an idea of what can cause this? (Note that it works fine when the web service is placed on the localhost). Could it be that the stack size of a Web Service is smaller than that of a Window Application? UPDATE The below is the code in which I am getting a stack overflow error private bool CheckifPixelsNeighbour(Pixel c1, Pixel c2, int DistanceAllowed) { bool Neighbour = false; if ((Math.Abs(c1.X - c2.X) <= DistanceAllowed) && Math.Abs(c1.Y - c2.Y) <= DistanceAllowed) { Neighbour = true; } return Neighbour; }

  • Java Heap Overflow, Forcing Garbage Collection

    - by Nicholas
I've create a trie tree with an array of children. When deleting a word, I set the children null, which I would assume deletes the node(delete is a relative term). I know that null doesn't delete the child, just sets it to null, which when using a large amount of words it causes to overflow the heap. Running a top on linux, I can see my memory usage spike to 1gb pretty quickly, but if I force garbage collection after the delete (Runtime.gc()) the memory usage goes to 50mb and never above that. From what I'm told, java by default runs garbage collection before a heap overflow happens, but I can't see to make that happen.

  • margin between content and div overflow scrollbar

    - by ben
I am using the following bits of code to keep my menu items fixed while allowing for the scrolling of content because it seems to be the most stable method across all browsers. body { overflow: hidden; } div.content { height: 100%; overflow: auto; } My problem is simple, and yet I can not seem to figure it out, the content inside the tag butts up against the scrollbar for the div area and it makes reading much more difficult. How can I get a margin between them (apart from floating a transparent image to the right to create space, there HAS to be a better way)?

  • WPF TextBlock Overflow Text to the Left

    - by shf301
As background I have a very long ID that too long to display in the given area of the TextBlock. The interesting portion of the ID is the end, that is the rightmost portion. What I would like to do is have the TextBlock, rather than the text overflowing right and cutting off the rightmost portion, overflow left and cutoff the leftmost portion. That is given the ID 123456 and a TextBlock with enough space to hold four characters, to get the TextBlock to display 3456 rather than 1234 as it does by default. I could manually trim my ID for display, but given a variable spaced font that's not ideal. So is there someway to get WPF do change the overflow direction?
