  • how to troubleshoot shutdown problems in windows 7

    - by Ieyasu Sawada
    I have a desktop with windows 7 ultimate installed. Whenever I shut it down from the start button. The text that says that it is logging off and shutting down is present and the monitor blacks out and says no signal. But the lights in the RAM is still on and all the fans in the desktop is still spinning. Why is that? It seems like its not shutting down completely. I have also got disk problems lately. Event id 175 and 50. Which I think is caused by the computer not shutting down completely. How do I troubleshoot this one? Feel free to ask if you need more details, thanks.

  • Finding a cause of shutdown/sleep

    - by user1188570
    My server running is Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.54-2 x86_64 GNU/Linux. About once a day, sometimes once every two days is shut down - It isn't really shut down, it seems like its sleeping - Power button is blinking, but I cannot boot it by clicking on power or reset button, I must pull electricity out and plug it back in, then I can boot it. What could be the cause of this? How can I fix this?

  • Cancelling Window 7 shutdown diables power button

    - by Jens
    Normally, pressing the power button once initiates a shut-down in Windows 7. If any programs are still running that will not quit (e.g. waiting for a dialogue response), Windows overlays the screen with a dialogue allowing the user to cancel the shut-down. I've just noticed that on two different systems here, using this cancel option disables the shut-down via power button. The power button can still be used to kill the system by holding it for a few seconds, using the Start menu button to shut the PC down still works as well. Steps to reproduce: Open Notepad, type a few characters. Do not save. Press the computer's power button. Wait until the dark screen appears. Press cancel. Press the power button again. Notice how nothing happens. What is the reason for this behaviour, and can it be disabled to always try and shut down the PC when the power button is pressed?

  • drupal - using variable_set, hook block and hook menu to save config values then print out in custom

    - by bert
    I am trying to 1) implement the hook menu and variable_set in the block hook and to solicit and store configuration values from user, 2) then use retrieve configuration values and 3) pass them out into a template using theme hook when page is shown. However I need a bit of a push on step two and three! // ===================== file: my_module.php function my_module_block($op = 'list', $delta = 0, $edit = array()) { switch($op) { case 'list': $blocks[0] = array( 'info' => t('Find Something'), // required value - this shows up in your list of blocks 'region' => 'left', // default region on the page 'weight' => 0, // position the block vertically within its column. • What's an easy way to shut down a computer that I'm connected to via RDP

    - by MBraedley
    I have a secondary machine on my local network that I usually use via RDP. Most of the time, it's on 24/7, but there are times when I may want to shut it down from the RDP client machine. The shutdown and restart options aren't available from the Windows XP start menu when you connect to a machine via RDP, so how can I shut this machine off without actually going to the physical machine? Also note that this computer currently doesn't have a monitor attached to it, which is partly why I want to be able to shut it down over RDP.

  • Cisco 851 (IOS) router: FastEthernet 4 (WAN) got the shutdown flag.

    - by cjavapro
    At a customer location there was a Cisco 851 router (which uses IOS). The PCs on location were all of a sudden unable to connect. We came on site and found that FastEthernet 4 (the WAN port) was "administratively down". We ran these commands to resolve it config t interface fa4 no shutdown exit exit write Now the mystery is how the shutdown flag got there in the first place? The router was on battery backup... but during the outage it was power cycled by the customer. It is possible that there was a short outage by the ISP and that the power cycle caused the shutdown flag to come up. There may have been a hack or an attack pattern that caused the shutdown flag to come up. There may have been a hack or an attack pattern that the router to become unavailable and then caused the shutdown flag to be added on startup. Question: Does anybody have any clues? or at least remember that they had a shutdown flag come up on their WAN port also?

  • Suppress task switch keys (winkey, alt-tab, alt-esc, ctrl-esc) using low-level keyboard hook

    - by matt
    I'm trying to suppress task switch keys (such as winkey, alt-tab, alt-esc, ctrl-esc, etc.) by using a low-level keyboard hook. I'm using the following LowLevelKeyboardProc callback: IntPtr HookCallback(int nCode, IntPtr wParam, ref KBDLLHOOKSTRUCT lParam) { if (nCode >= 0) { bool suppress = false; // Suppress left and right windows keys. if (lParam.Key == VK_LWIN || lParam.Key == VK_RWIN) suppress = true; // Suppress alt-tab. if (lParam.Key == VK_TAB && HasAltModifier(lParam.Flags)) suppress = true; // Suppress alt-escape. if (lParam.Key == VK_ESCAPE && HasAltModifier(lParam.Flags)) suppress = true; // Suppress ctrl-escape. /* How do I hook CTRL-ESCAPE ? */ // Suppress keys by returning 1. if (suppress) return new IntPtr(1); } return CallNextHookEx(HookID, nCode, wParam, ref lParam); } bool HasAltModifier(int flags) { return (flags & 0x20) == 0x20; } However, I'm at a loss as to how to suppress the CTRL-ESC combination. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Keyboard hook return different symbols from card reader depends whther my app in focus or not

    - by user363868
    I code WinForm application where one of the input is magnetic stripe card reader (CR). I am using code George Mamaladze's article Processing Global Mouse and Keyboard Hooks in C# on codeproject.com to listen keyboard (USB card reader acts same way as keyboard) and I have weird situation. One card reader CR1 (Unitech MS240-2UG) produces keystroke which I intercept on KeyPress event analyze that I intercept certain patter like %ABCD-6EFJHI? and trigger some logic. Analysis required because user can type something else into application or in another application meanwhile my app is open When I use another card reader CR2 (IdTech IDBM-334133) keystroke intercepted by hook started from number 5 instead of % (It is actually same key on keyboard). Since it is starting sentinel it is very important for me to have ability recognize input from card reader. Moreover if my app running in background and I have focus on Notepad when I swipe card string %ABCD-6EFJHI? appears in Notepad and same way, with proper starting character) intercepted by keyboard hook. If swiped when focus on Form it is 5ABCD-6EFJHI? User who tried app with another card reader has same result as me with CR2. Only CR1 works for me as expected I was looking into Device manager of Windows and both devices use same HID driver supplied by MS. I checked devices though respective software from CR makers and starting and ending sentinels set to % and ? respective on both. I would appreciate and ideas and thoughts as I hit the wall myself Thank you

  • Closing a hook that captures global input events

    - by Margus
    Intro Here is an example to illustrate the problem. Consider I am tracking and displaying mouse global current position and last click button and position to the user. Here is an image: To archive capturing click events on windows box, that would and will be sent to the other programs event messaging queue, I create a hook using winapi namely user32.dll library. This is outside JDK sandbox, so I use JNA to call the native library. This all works perfectly, but it does not close as I expect it to. My question is - How do I properly close following example program? Example source Code below is not fully written by Me, but taken from this question in Oracle forum and partly fixed. import java.awt.AWTException; import java.awt.Dimension; import java.awt.EventQueue; import java.awt.GridLayout; import java.awt.MouseInfo; import java.awt.Point; import java.awt.event.WindowAdapter; import java.awt.event.WindowEvent; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import com.sun.jna.Native; import com.sun.jna.NativeLong; import com.sun.jna.Platform; import com.sun.jna.Structure; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.BaseTSD.ULONG_PTR; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.Kernel32; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.User32; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinDef.HWND; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinDef.LRESULT; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinDef.WPARAM; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinUser.HHOOK; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinUser.HOOKPROC; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinUser.MSG; import com.sun.jna.platform.win32.WinUser.POINT; public class MouseExample { final JFrame jf; final JLabel jl1, jl2; final CWMouseHook mh; final Ticker jt; public class Ticker extends Thread { public boolean update = true; public void done() { update = false; } public void run() { try { Point p, l = MouseInfo.getPointerInfo().getLocation(); int i = 0; while (update == true) { try { p = MouseInfo.getPointerInfo().getLocation(); if (!p.equals(l)) { l = p; jl1.setText(new GlobalMouseClick(p.x, p.y) .toString()); } Thread.sleep(35); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); return; } } } catch (Exception e) { update = false; } } } public MouseExample() throws AWTException, UnsupportedOperationException { this.jl1 = new JLabel("{}"); this.jl2 = new JLabel("{}"); this.jf = new JFrame(); this.jt = new Ticker(); this.jt.start(); this.mh = new CWMouseHook() { @Override public void globalClickEvent(GlobalMouseClick m) { jl2.setText(m.toString()); } }; mh.setMouseHook(); jf.setLayout(new GridLayout(2, 2)); jf.add(new JLabel("Position")); jf.add(jl1); jf.add(new JLabel("Last click")); jf.add(jl2); jf.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() { public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we) { mh.dispose(); jt.done(); jf.dispose(); } }); jf.setLocation(new Point(0, 0)); jf.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(200, 90)); jf.pack(); jf.setVisible(true); } public static class GlobalMouseClick { private char c; private int x, y; public GlobalMouseClick(char c, int x, int y) { super(); this.c = c; this.x = x; this.y = y; } public GlobalMouseClick(int x, int y) { super(); this.x = x; this.y = y; } public char getC() { return c; } public void setC(char c) { this.c = c; } public int getX() { return x; } public void setX(int x) { this.x = x; } public int getY() { return y; } public void setY(int y) { this.y = y; } @Override public String toString() { return (c != 0 ? c : "") + " [" + x + "," + y + "]"; } } public static class CWMouseHook { public User32 USER32INST; public CWMouseHook() throws UnsupportedOperationException { if (!Platform.isWindows()) { throw new UnsupportedOperationException( "Not supported on this platform."); } USER32INST = User32.INSTANCE; mouseHook = hookTheMouse(); Native.setProtected(true); } private static LowLevelMouseProc mouseHook; private HHOOK hhk; private boolean isHooked = false; public static final int WM_LBUTTONDOWN = 513; public static final int WM_LBUTTONUP = 514; public static final int WM_RBUTTONDOWN = 516; public static final int WM_RBUTTONUP = 517; public static final int WM_MBUTTONDOWN = 519; public static final int WM_MBUTTONUP = 520; public void dispose() { unsetMouseHook(); mousehook_thread = null; mouseHook = null; hhk = null; USER32INST = null; } public void unsetMouseHook() { isHooked = false; USER32INST.UnhookWindowsHookEx(hhk); System.out.println("Mouse hook is unset."); } public boolean isIsHooked() { return isHooked; } public void globalClickEvent(GlobalMouseClick m) { System.out.println(m); } private Thread mousehook_thread; public void setMouseHook() { mousehook_thread = new Thread(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { try { if (!isHooked) { hhk = USER32INST.SetWindowsHookEx(14, mouseHook, Kernel32.INSTANCE.GetModuleHandle(null), 0); isHooked = true; System.out .println("Mouse hook is set.   • Using SVN post-commit hook to update only files that have been commited

    - by fondie
    I am using an SVN repository for my web development work. I have a development site set up which holds a checkout of the repository. I have set up an SVN post-commit hook so that whenever a commit is made to the repository the development site is updated: cd /home/www/dev_ssl /usr/bin/svn up This works fine but due to the size of the repository the updates take a long time (approx. 3 minutes) which is rather frustrating when making regular commits. What I'd like is to change the post-commit hook to only update those files/directories that have been committed but I don't know how to go about doing this. Updating the "lowest common directory" would probably be the best solution, e.g. If committing the follow files: /branches/feature_x/images/logo.jpg /branches/feature_x/css/screen.css It would update the directory: /branches/feature_x/ Can anyone help me create a solution that achieves this please? Thanks! Update: The repository and development site are located on the same server so network issues shouldn't be involved. CPU usage is very low, and I/O should be ok (it's running on hi-spec dedicated server) The development site is approx. 7.5GB in size and contains approx. 600,000 items, this is mainly due to having multiple branches/tags

  • pre-commit hook in svn: could not be translated from the native locale to UTF-8

    - by Alexandre Moraes
    Hi everybody, I have a problem with my pre-commit hook. This hook test if a file is locked when the user commits. When a bad condition happens, it should output that the another user is locking this file or if nobody is locking, it should show "you are not locking this file message (file´s name)". The error happens when the file´s name has some latin character like "ç" and tortoise show me this in the output. Commit failed (details follow): Commit blocked by pre-commit hook (exit code 1) with output: [Erro output could not be translated from the native locale to UTF-8.] Do you know how can I solve this? • Auto-Invoke Update Manager to update everything and shutdown after system idle for x minutes?

    - by unknownthreat
    I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a machine for my parents. The thing is they never request updates from Update Manager even the manager itself prompted them so. Moreover, when they are done with whatever they are doing on Ubuntu, they always leave the computer on. And I always have to come back and shut the machine down. Sometimes, the computer even sit idle for hours. So I want to know whether this is possible in Ubuntu. I am thinking of a script that will be activated after the machine is idle for x minutes. When x minutes have elapsed, Update Manager will automatically update everything listed. (I recall that you need the admin password for this, so is there a workaround?) After all the updates are done, the machine will automatically shutdown. Is this possible?

  • Is it save to configure "Shutdown" on "When laptop lid is closed" ?

    - by Takkat
    To setup a laptop owned by a complete PC novice any settings that may become hard to tackle remotely need to be avoided. The laptop will be administrated via SSH. One thing in my list are problems arising from improper wake-ups from suspend or hibernate as they may also affect network accessibility. This is why I thought setting up power management to "shutdown" on closing the laptop lid could be a good idea. However I am not sure if this is a safe way to do. What problems in addition to software not closing properly (and thus not saving their data) could I be faced if I proceeded as planned?

  • Logout/Shutdown taking very long, how to find the problem?

    - by user67928
    Some months now, it's taking very long to logout/shutdown/reboot my ubuntu box. it doesn't happen with a fresh profile it still takes ages even when i close all running programs first (foreground programs) sometimes a couple of applications are closed before the waiting time (eg. chrome, music player) it happened with 11.10 and now 12.04 i did a fresh install of 12.04 but reinstalled all my programs and application settings/profiles (eg. chrome profile, music db, .bashrc etc.), still no solution it happens only when i use the gnome way of rebooting/shutting down/logging out when issuing "sudo reboot" in the terminal, there is no waiting time there is no process eating CPU time i have not found any evidence what is causing this whatsoever i'm using "gnome-fallback" (gnome classic 2D) what actions does gnome execute when clicking on eg. logout exactly? i want to trace these steps any help is appreciated very much!

  • Git pre-commit hook: getting list of changed files

    - by Mikko Ohtamaa
    I am developing validation and linting utility to be integrated with various commit hooks, including Git one https://github.com/miohtama/vvv Currently validators and linters are run against the whole project codebase on every commit. However, it would be much more optimal to run them against changed files only. For this, I would need to know changed files list in my Git precommit hook (in Python) https://github.com/miohtama/vvv/blob/master/vvv/hooks/git.py What options I have to extract the changed files list (in Python if that matters)?

  • java: useful example of a shutdown hook?

    - by Jason S
    I'm trying to make sure my Java application takes reasonable steps to be robust, and part of that involves shutting down gracefully. I am reading about shutdown hooks and I don't actually get how to make use of them in practice. Is there a practical example out there? Let's say I had a really simple application like this one below, which writes numbers to a file, 10 to a line, in batches of 100, and I want to make sure a given batch finishes if the program is interrupted. I get how to register a shutdown hook but I have no idea how to integrate that into my application. Any suggestions? package com.example.test.concurrency; import java.io.File; import java.io.FileNotFoundException; import java.io.FileOutputStream; import java.io.PrintWriter; public class GracefulShutdownTest1 { final private int N; final private File f; public GracefulShutdownTest1(File f, int N) { this.f=f; this.N = N; } public void run() { PrintWriter pw = null; try { FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(this.f); pw = new PrintWriter(fos); for (int i = 0; i < N; ++i) writeBatch(pw, i); } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { pw.close(); } } private void writeBatch(PrintWriter pw, int i) { for (int j = 0; j < 100; ++j) { int k = i*100+j; pw.write(Integer.toString(k)); if ((j+1)%10 == 0) pw.write('\n'); else pw.write(' '); } } static public void main(String[] args) { if (args.length < 2) { System.out.println("args = [file] [N] " +"where file = output filename, N=batch count"); } else { new GracefulShutdownTest1( new File(args[0]), Integer.parseInt(args[1]) ).run(); } } }

  • shutdown windows 8 from metro app

    - by MindFreak
    I'm doing a metro app for Windows 8. And as part of its functionality, I need to initiate shutdown of Winodws 8 from the Metro App. Here are the questions: 1) Firstly, I researched a lot on this topic and I found out that System.Diagnostics.Process is not available for Metro App. So, is there a another way around? 2) Even if I can't directly shutdown, is there a way to trigger it from the Metro App? I would prefer a solution in C#. Thanks.

  • Mercurial push error - hook failed

    - by raychenon
    I committed some changesets. Now I want to push them to remote repository. I get this error during push pushing to http://hguser:***@z2xeu:1337/hg/cms searching for changes 1 changesets found remote: adding changesets remote: adding manifests remote: adding file changes remote: added 1 changesets with 2 changes to 2 files remote: Attempt to commit or push text file(s) using CRLF line endings remote: in 700e14d32918: src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/jsp/search.jsp remote: remote: To prevent this mistake in your local repository, remote: add to Mercurial.ini or .hg/hgrc: remote: remote: [hooks] remote: pretxncommit.crlf = python:hgext.win32text.forbidcrlf remote: remote: and also consider adding: remote: remote: [extensions] remote: hgext.win32text = remote: [encode] remote: ** = cleverencode: remote: [decode] remote: ** = cleverdecode: remote: transaction abort! remote: rollback completed remote: abort: pretxnchangegroup.crlf hook failed [command returned code 1 Wed Jan 12 11:14:55 2011] To prevent this, I wrote in the .hg/hgrc file ( there is no Mercurial.ini ) [hooks] pretxncommit.crlf = python:hgext.win32text.forbidcrlf pretxnchangegroup.crlf = python:hgext.win32text.forbidcrlf [extensions] hgext.win32text = But I still get the same error as above. I'm pretty sure pretxnchangegroup.crlf is involved in this, maybe a python file ? I use only unicode characters in files committed

  • In a pre-commit hook - how to access/compare current and previous versions of files

    - by EthanML
    I'm trying to add to our existing pre-commit SVN hook so that it will check for and block an increase in file size for files in specific directory/s. I've written a python script to compare two file sizes, which takes two files as arguments and uses sys.exit(0) or (1) to return the result, this part seems to work fine. My problem is in calling the python script from the batch file, how to reference the newly committed and previous versions of each file? The existing code is new to me and a mess of %REPOS%, %TXN%s etc and I'm not sure how to go about using them. Is there a simple, standard way of doing this? It also already contains code to loop through the changed files using svnlook changed, so that part shouldn't be an issue. Thanks very much
