• Can't get virtual desktops to show up on RDWeb for Server 2012 R2

  I built a test lab using the Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview. The initial test lab has the following configuration (I have replaced our name with "OurCompanyName" because I would like it if Google searches for our name did not cause people to come to this site, please do the same in any responses) Physical hardware running Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview full GUI, acting as Hyper-V host (joined to the test domain as testVwHost.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) with the following VM's running on it VM running 2012 R2 Core acting as domain controller for the forest testVw.OurCompanyName.com (testDC.testVw.OurCompanyName.com) VM running 2012 R2 Core with nothing running on it joined to the test domain as testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com A clean install of Windows 7, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it A clean install of Windows 8, all that was done to it was all windows updates where loaded and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /mode:vm was run on it I then ran "Add Roles and Features" from testVwHost and chose the "Remote Desktop Services Installation", "Standard Deployment", "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment". I choose testIIS for the roles "RD Connection Broker" and "RD Web Access" and testVwHost as "RD Virtualization Host" The Install of the roles went fine, I then went to Remote Desktop Services in server manager and wet to setup Deployment Properties. I set the certificate for all 3 roles to our certificate signed by a CA for *.OurCompanyName.com. I then created a new Virtual Desktop Collection for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and both where created without issue. On the Windows 7 pool I added RemoteApp to launch WordPad, For windows 8 I did not add any RemoteApp programs. Everything now appears to be fine from a setup perspective however if I go to https://testIIS.testVw.OurCompanyName.com/RDWeb and log in as the use Administrator (or any orher user) I don't see the virtual desktops I created nor the RemoteApp publishing of WordPad. I tried adding a licensing server, using testDC as the server but that made no difference. What step did I miss in setting this up that is causing this not to show up on RDWeb? If any additional information is needed pleas let me know. I have tried every possible thing I can think of and I am just groping around in the dark now. • Add an Excel file as a linked server in SQL 2012

  I'm trying to add a linked server to an Excel 2010 file from SQL Server 2012. Every reference I've found online for doing this is using older versions of SQL Server, and the driver that they tell you to use 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', is not present in 2012 from what I can tell. Can anyone tell me which provider I need to use and what the product name, data source, and provider string should be? For reference, this is the screen I'm looking at: Thanks.

• One Active Directory, Multiple Remote Desktop Services (Server 2012 solution)

  What I am trying to do is quite complex, so I figured I'd throw it out to a wider audience to see if anyone can find a flaw. What I am trying to do (as an MSP/VAR) is design a solution that will give multiple companies a session based remote desktop (companies that need to be kept completely seperate), using only a handful of servers. This is how I imagine it at the moment: CORE SERVER - Server 2012 Datacentre (All below are HyperV servers) Server1: Cloud-DC01 (Active Directory Domain Services for mycloud.local) Server2: Cloud-EX01 (Exchange Server 2010 running multi tenant mode) Server3: Cloud-SG01 (Remote Desktop Gateway) CORE SERVER 2 - Server 2012 Datacentre (All below are HyperV servers) Server1: Cloud-DC02 (Active Directory Domain Services for mycloud.local) Server2: Cloud-TS01 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company A) Server3: Cloud-TS02 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company B) Server4: Cloud-TS03 (Remote Desktop Session Host for Company C) What I thought about doing was setting up each Organisation in their own OU (perhaps creating their OU structure based on the Excahnge 2010 tenant OU structure so the accounts are linked). Each company would get a Remote Desktop Session Host server that would also serve as a file server. This server would be seperated from the rest on its own range. The server Cloud-SG01 would have access to all these networks and route the traffic to the appropriate network when a client connects and authenticated so they are pushed onto the correct server (Based on session collections in 2012). I won't lie this is something I have come up with quite quickly so there may well be something gapingly obvious that I am missing. Any feedback would be appreciated.

• Licensing SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services w/ SharePoint 2010

  Here's my situation: I have 1 VM that is running SharePoint 2010 SP1. I have a different physical server that is running SQL Server 2008 R2 that hosts all the configuration and content database for SharePoint. Now, we want to start providing BI capabilities to our users with SharePoint and SQL Server. With it's new features, 2012 is the obvious way to go. To support this, I'm looking to build a new VM that will have SQL Server 2012 installed w/ Analysis services and SSIS, which will be the platform that gets our data from our Oracle databases, puts it in a warehouse hosted by the SQL 2012 instance, and is put into cubes. What's getting me about the platform is licensing for Reporting Services and PowerPivot. My plan was to install SSRS and PowerPivot on the current SharePoint server. But my understanding of the licensing means that instead of the new SQL server being licensed, I'd have to license both new server, and the SharePoint server. Conversely, I could install SharePoint onto the SQL server, and only have to get a second SP license, but then I'd have the added complexity of deploying a separated application server, and combines my data and application servers. Is my licensing understanding correct, or can I have SSRS and PowerPivot installed separately without incurring additional licensing costs?

• Display issue with fresh install of windows server 2012

  I installed windows server 2012 last night on my home "server". I use server loosely. From the get go I had display and graphic issues. The image was fuzzy and jumbled up during the install. This continued once booted into the install. I did installed Server 2012 twice now as the first time, I only installed "core". I know this is not a busted graphics card because it worked fine in Win7, during boot, and fine in "core" mode. Once booted into "GUI" install of Server 2012, the image was messed up again. To make things even more weird, the windows "loading" screen looks fine. Once the login screen appears the image is fuzzy and jumbled. My guess was that it was a driver issue. I did try to install the win8 x64 drivers from nvidia. This caused the system to become unbootable and I had to restore to a previous working point and uninstall the driver. I did try two different monitors and cables. Also both ports on the back of the video card. I did manage to get RDP running and that works fine. I rarely work directly on this machine but it would be nice to have the option back. Geforce 210, AMD 4600+, 4 gigs of ram.

• 2012 R2 services will not start after promotion to Domain Controller

  Having a peculiar issue promoting a Windows 2012 R2 server in a domain at 2003 domain/forest functional level. Built a new 2012 R2 server, added the following software (labtech, appassure, eset A/V, & Teamviewer). It activated and appeared to be working fine. I added the Active Directory Domain Services role, and completed the configuration (Domain/Forest Prep, and DC promotion). All appeared to go well. I rebooted the server, and that's where the peculiar stuff began. I noticed the server indicated it needed activated again; but would not accept the key. I verified the key was good. That's when I noticed the Software Protection service (as well as many other core services - Base Filtering engine, DHCP client, firewall, etc) would not start. The error message for all of them was "Access Denied". I called MS, and they wanted to troubleshoot at a service level. Their fix was to use procmon and identify the resource that needed permissions (registry key, file or folder) and add "everyone" with full control). That got the services to start; but the problem re-appeared after a reboot. Thinking the issue might have been with the anti-virus package during the promotion process, I rebuilt the DCs from scratch and removed the metadata from AD (as I could not demote the machines "rpc server unavailble"). I tried to promote the newly built machines again. The only changes to the brand new machines being critical updates. Again the promotion appeared to work fine; but upon reboot (and a long wait to allow replication to occur) similar problems began to re-appear. I have verified that the schema updates are correct (schema version is 69 - for Windows 2012 R2). I am not finding much about this issue through my own searches, so I thought I would post this to see if anyone else has seen anything similar...

• How to sysprep SQL Server Express?

  We plan to deploy Hyper-V VHD with Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 Express installed to multiple hosts. From my understanding, the correct way to do this is to install SQL Server in prepartion mode, sysprep Windows, then complete SQL Server installation when the VHD is deployed. I mostly followed the process in this blog post: http://sethusrinivasan.com/category/sysprep/ However, after the VHD is deployed, I'm unable to complete the SQL Server installation. It keeps saying "Upgrade matrix is incorrect". It seems that it's trying to upgrade itself to Enterprise edition (I was asked for product key during install, but I skipped it). Could anyone share their experience in deploying VHDs with SQL Server (we're fine with either SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2012)? I think the source of my issue is because I can't select "Express Edition" when entering the product key at the completion stage, so the installation is trying to do an upgrade to Enterprise Edition. I have no idea why the drop down list is empty.

• MDX Studio download #mdx #ssas

  Short version: the latest available version of MDX Studio can be downloaded from http://www.sqlbi.com/tools/mdx-studio/ Long version: Last week Stacia Misner twitted that the online version of MDX Studio was no longer available. It was hosted on http://mdx.mosha.com. It was a sad news, and it is also not good that nobody is maintaining the desktop version of MDX Studio. The latest release is the 0.4.14 and as I am writing it is still available on a SkyDrive link provided by Mosha Pasumansky, who wrote MDX Studio. Mosha does not work in Microsoft now and the entire BI community hopes that somebody will continue its work on this product. Unfortunately, it cannot be published on CodePlex because of some IP restrictions. Only bad news? Well, I hope no. The first good news is that MDX Studio also works with Analysis Services 2012 in Multidimensional mode. The second news is that, after having checked that we can do that, we created a web page on SQLBI web site to download the latest available release of MDX Studio. I hope it will be necessary to update it in the future, by now it is just a way to simplify the finding and download of this precious tool, and to grant that it will not disappear in case the current SkyDrive using to host the download would be discontinued, like it happened to the MDX Studio online version. Now a question to the BI Community: I know that there was some content available regarding tutorial on MDX Studio. I’d like to gather it and to put all in a single place.   In my Win7(64 bit) PC, I installed VS 2012 Ultimate Trial version few days back and today i got my msdn subscription of VS2012 Premium. so i uninstalled the Trial and was trying to run the setup exe for VS 2012 and dit is crashing. this is the error details i am seeing. Anybody know how to fix this ? • How to enable "Sleep" for Windows 2012 server

  I recently installed Windows Server 2012. This will serve as the dev-instance for our engineers and will be accessed in multiple time zones. I therefore plan to run this 24x7 but want to conserve energy by going to sleep mode when not in use & enable Wake-On-Magic-Packet. Based on the previous post it appears that there is no option to sleep Win Server 2012 with Hyper-V. Since I don't care much about virtualization now, I uninstalled Hyper-V. In addition to this, I have done the following 1) Ran powercfg -a. Don't find sleep. 2) Added [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot] "Start"=dword:00000003 to try gaining sleep - no luck! 3) Only see Shutdown and Restart in power options. • Hyper-V server 2012 nic teaming setup and virtual switch configuration

  I have a server with 2 nics. I installed Hyper-v 2012 server (not windows server 2012, no gui) I am trying to set up load balancing. I have both nics in the same switch currently in trunk mode and no native vlan. I use the new-netlbfoteam command to create a team with both nics, I can then "set-netlbfoteamnic "Nic Team" -vlanid 4" so that its available to me with a DHCP or static address but as soon as I try to create a virtual switch it becomes unresponsive. My guess is that is due to it removing the vlan tagging I setup. if I add-netlbfoteamnic and set it for vlan 4, then set the IP I can ping it from my management computer but I just get an error "an error occurred while attempting to connect to server "xxxxxx" Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server."

• How to get diagnostic information on a failing Windows Server 2012 install

  I am trying to install a copy of Windows Server 2012 on two machines. Both machines go through the initial "Files loading" progress bar and get to the new Windows Server 2012 logo. However, the installation (on both machines) will immediately fail, and the machine will restart. I am trying to figure out if there's a way to display diagnostic information about the error before or after restarting, but Google is not helping me at all. Is there a key combination I can hit that will display an error log, perhaps?

• LSI SAS 1064E drivers for Server 2012

  I have a need to place Windows Server 2012 onto a Sunfire X4100 blade server that contains a LSI SAS 1064e RAID controller (2006). The LSI site only has drivers up to server 2008 R2. I did attempt to install server 2012 hoping it might contain generic MS Drivers (I was dreaming, I know). That failed. I attempted to load external LSI drivers for server 2008. That failed as well. Am I out of luck, or did I miss something? Thanks in advance.

• Heap corruption error after language pack installation for Visual Studio 2012

  I have installed the german version of Visual Studio 2012 Premium on my german windows machine and installed the english language pack vor Visual Studio 2012 Premium and it works great but after I installed the german language pack I get the heap corruption error 0xc0000374. The faulty module is ntdll.dll, version: 6.3.9600.16408 Only restoring Windows resolves this issue. Edit: This error also occurs when changing the displayed language and I was able to observe this behavior only after updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and updating from DevExpress 12.1 to DevExpress 13.1. Not only that, but the error does not occure immediately after installing a language, sometimes I can start debugging my program as usual and then after three to five times or so, the error occurs. Is there another solution than restoring Windows?

• Windows Server 2012 Metro shortcut icons do not show for other users

  I have installed SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2013 on my Windows Server 2012 machine using a dedicated domain install account. When I log into the same machine with a user account, all the icons for these applications are missing! I can still access the applications by finding them in 'Program Files', however it is very annoying. (For example, I'm not exactly sure where the SharePoint PowerShell is located, and frankly I don't want to know either) In previous versions of Windows Server, the Icons always showed up in the Start Menu. Does anyone know how I can copy the shortcuts in one account to another?

• SCCM 2012 R2 - OSD Task Sequence failure on physical computers

  I'm trying to deploy windows 7 with SCCM 2012 R2 to physical desktops and laptops. But the task sequence keeps failing, no matter what I try. When I try it on a VM it works fine. However, when I try it on a physical computer it fails. So I think it has something to do with drivers, but I already tried both the "auto apply drivers" + wmi query for model method, and also the "apply driver package" + wmi query for model method. In the link below I added a zip file, containing two other zip files. One is a captured log from a failed osd on a desktop, the other is the export of my task sequence. Download zip-file with log and TS If anyone could resolve the issue, or share their own task sequence for such a task (pure sccm 2012 (R2), no MDT), that would be great.

  I am trying to install Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine, but installation fails. I tried to install all version (premium, ultimate etc..) but getting below error. Machine is not domain joined and logged in as administrative user. I was using Security Essentials but turn it off before the installation. Installation source is from MSDN. Error log is too big to upload, important portion from the log: [2B6C:2580][2012-09-16T23:06:40]: MUX: ERROR: The type initializer for 'System.Windows.Media.FontFamily' threw an exception.

  Good afternoon, Windows Server 2012 R2 as host fully up to date Windows Server 2012 R2 as guest fully up to date Whether I am running it as a host or guest, whenever I am installing an application that should take a couple minutes it always ends up 3x-5x longer than it should. If I take the same applications and install it on any other OS (IE 2k8, 7,) it they install very quickly. Dell server management software took 30 minutes or so when it takes 5 minutes or so on 2k8. Even a clean install not joined to domain I still experience this same slowness on applications I attempt to install. So my question to everyone is, are you or anyone else experiencing this? I cannot find anything on google so this is why I am here

• Change Windows Server 2012 color scheme without Desktop Experience feature

  I have a Windows Server 2012, blue is nice... but I'd prefer a less "eyes puncher" color, maybe gray or black... I'm a GNU/Linux sysadmin and just the fact of have the entire GUI on a server is difficult for me, so I would avoid to install the Desktop Experience feature just to change the color of the GUI. I have read here: How to change color scheme in Windows Server 2012 That once I've changed color I may remove the Desktop Experience feature and the color will not be reverted to the original. So I guess there must be a way to change the color without install this feature pack, because looks like it just adds the control panel to set the color, but not the core feature, that maybe could be accessible within some registry key. Does someone have some idea?

• Adding a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server to an existing domain, without migrating the AD

  I have an existing Active Directory in house, a mix between a Win2K8R2 and Win2K3 domain, and i would like to test out Windows Server 2012 Essentials BETA on the network. When walking though the install, it gives me the option of a new domain, or migrating from an existing domain. when clicking existing, it tells me i can only have one SBS server running on a domain at a time... So, i dont have any existing SBS servers in house (both are full standard or enterprise editions) but i do plan on keeping at least one of these extra servers running... So, how do i get a 2012 Essentials server to join a domain, and not migrate the existing domain? or if i do migrate, can i still get one of the other boxes to act as secondary controllers?
