  • Is creating a full application in Silverlight advisable?

    Is creating a huge public site fully in Silverlight really advisable? for eg. an ecommerce site. I don't want to start any debate but actually I feel Silverlight shouldn't be used for full website because the biggest loss you incur is of SEO. No search engines till today can parse the xap file and index it based on it's content. You can get around it by doing ifs and thens like if Silverlight is not supported then make an Asp.Net equivalent page for it but that only doubles our effort of making application, more than anything else. Why write double code in 2 applications meant for the same purpose. If that is the only option why not create Asp.Net application only. What are your views? Thanks in advance :)

    I had created a demo web application by executing rails tickets and then i executed rails script/server to run it on localhost. Initially i was able to execute the application in the browser by typing localhost:3000 in the address bar, but then I deleted the folder tickets from my hard disk. Now again i created the same folder but when i try to run it using the same command rails script/server it says that vverma@l-vverma:~/railsExp/tickets$ rails script/server create File exists - script/server I tried deleting the script/server file but i still couldn't run the localhost:3000 in the browser Tried rails s as well, it gave the following output:- http://paste.ubuntu.com/1317610/ But still i was unable to run the app on 'localhost:3000' What is the solution to this

It displays the notification correctly; however, when the user clicks the notification, nothing happens. It should open up the SMS inbox so the user can view their message.   • WiX: Forcefully launch uninstall previous using CustomAction

    I'm writing a new major upgrade of our product. In my installer I start by finding configuration settings of the previous version, then I'd like to uninstall the previous version. I have found several guides telling me how one should make a MSI suitable for such upgrades. However, the previous was not an MSI. It was not according to best practices. It does, however, in registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{GUID} specify an UninstallString. Using a RegistrySearch I can easy find the command below, which I store in UNINSTALL_CMD. RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\10\01\Intel32\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{GUID}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly 4: I cannot get the hang of the CustomAction needed to perform the actual uninstall. <CustomAction Id="ca.UninstPrev" Property="UNINSTALL_CMD" ExeCommand="" /> The MSI logs says: Info 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.   • HTML5 or Native Android/iOS application?

    I would like to hear your opinion on this debate. I want to build a mobile application which will interact with a server and I was wondering what's the best way to do it. Build the entire application using the HTML5 technology and then just create native "browsing" apps for Android/iOS or to build the Android/iOS apps from scratch? Using the HTML5 will save considerable amounts of time but I don't know if the result will be equally good in both platforms. Building native apps will take much more time but the result will be definitely good. What do you think?

    I’m currently writing an application for the Android platform that requires a mounted SD card (or ExternalStorage). I know that it might not be the best way to require something like that, but the application will work with quite a lot of data, and I don’t even want to think about storing that on the device’s storage. Anyway, to ensure that the application won’t run without the external storage, I do a quick check in the activity’s onCreate method. If the card is not mounted, I want to display an error message and then quit the application. My current approach looks like this: public void onCreate ( Bundle savedInstanceState ) { super.onCreate( savedInstanceState ); setContentView( R.layout.main ); try { // initialize data storage // will raise an exception if it fails, or the SD card is not mounted // ... } catch ( Exception e ) { AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder( this ); builder .setMessage( "There was an error: " + e.getMessage() ) .setCancelable( false ) .setNeutralButton( "Ok.", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() { public void onClick ( DialogInterface dialog, int which ) { MyApplication.this.finish(); } } ); AlertDialog error = builder.create(); error.show(); return; } // continue ... } When I run the application, and the exception gets raised (I raise it manually to check if everything works), the error message is displayed correctly. However when I press the button, the application closes and I get an Android error, that the application was closed unexpectedly (and I should force exit). I read some topics before on closing an application, and I know that it maybe shouldn’t happen like that. But how should I instead prevent the application from continuing to run? How do you close the application correctly when an error occurs?

    In order to speed up Android development, I've edited my ~/.bashrc to add some paths to PATH: export PATH=${PATH}:/opt/android-sdk/tools:/opt/android-sdk/platform-tools This works just fine from the command line (I can just type android and, no matter where I am, the Android SDK and AVD Manager will start up just fine. However, if I try to type android in the Alt+F2 dialog (Run Application), it gives the following error: Could not open location 'file:///home/felix/android' Error stating file '/home/felix/android': No such file or directory Why is that? What PATH does the Run Application dialog use?

    Jeder kennt die Reiterkarten im APEX Application Builder, mit der eleganten Möglichkeit, das Untermenü als Pulldown-Menü aufzuklappen. Und viele fragen sich, wie man sowas in eigenen APEX-Anwendungen verwenden könnte. Spätestens, wenn man dabei noch mehr als eine Hiararchieebene unterstützen möchte, kommen APEX Reiterkarten (Tabs) nicht mehr in Frage, denn diese unterstützen nur zwei Ebenen. Im Internet findet sich der eine oder andere Tipp zum Thema; allerdings basieren viele dieser Tipps auf den JavaScript-Funktionen, die auch der Application Builder intern verwendet. Allerdings sind diese nicht dokumentiert - man kann sich also nicht darauf verlassen, dass der Ansatz in künftigen APEX-Versionen noch funktioniert. I ask this question because I was reading an article about why Chromium isn't packaged for many Linux distros like Fedora. Apparently its largely due to the fact that Google has forked a number of libraries, modified them, and included them in Chromium. This has driven up the complexity of packaging releases. There are a number of reasons why this can be a bad thing, but how strong a case can you actually make for doing so in a large widely used application such as Chromium?     Let's say that I have a web Application where i'm going to have 300 users and each one have to see data on real time, imagine that each client make an ajax call to the server to see in real time what's happens with the changes of the data, this calls are made each 300 ms per user. I know that i can run a simulation to see if the hardware of my server supports this example. But what happen's if the number of users start to grow up. Is there a way that i can measure the hardware needed to handle this growing behavior, a software, a formula, algorithm or maybe recommend me if i need to implement an distributed application with multiplies servers and balance the loads.
