• Books and resources for Java Performance tuning - when working with databases, huge lists

  Hi All, I am relatively new to working on huge applications in Java. I am working on a Java web service which is pretty heavily used by various clients. The service basically queries the database (hibernate) and then works with a lot of Lists (there are adapters to convert list returned from DB to the interface which the service publishes) and I am seeing lot of issues with the service like high CPU usage or high heap space. While I can troubleshoot the performance issues using a profiler, I want to actually learn about what all I need to take care when I actually write code. Like what kind of List to use or things like using StringBuilder instead of String, etc... Is there any book or blogs which I can refer which will help me while I write new services? Also my application is multithreaded - each service call from a client is a new thread, and I want to know some best practices around that area as well. I did search the web but I found many tips which are not relevant in the latest Java 6 releases, so wanted to know what kind of resources would help a developer starting out now on Java for heavily used applications. • Android media thumbnails. Serious issues?

  I've been playing with android's thumbnails for a while now, and I've seen some inconsistencies that make me want to scream. My goal is to have a simple list of all Images (and a separate list for video) with the thumbnail and filename. Device: HTC Evo (fresh from Google I/o) First off: http://androidsamples.blogspot.com/2009/06/how-to-display-thumbnails-of-images.html That code doesn't seem to work at all, thumbnails are duplicated... some with the "mirror" effect and some without. Also some won't load and just display a black square. I've tried rebuilding the thumbnails by deleting the "alblum thumbs" directory from the SD card. HTC's gallery application seem to show everything fine. This approach seems to work: Bitmap thumb = MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.getThumbnail( getContentResolver(), id, MediaStore.Video.Thumbnails.MICRO_KIND, null); imageView.setImageBitmap(curThumb); where id is the original images id and imageView is some image view. This is great! But, strangely, way too slow to be used inside a SimpleViewBinder. Next approach: String [] proj = {MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails._ID}; Cursor c = managedQuery(MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI, proj, MediaStore.Images.Thumbnails.IMAGE_ID + "=" +id , null, null); if (c != null && c.moveToFirst()) { Uri thumb = Uri.withAppendedPath(mThumbUri,c.getLong(0)+""); imageView.setImageURI(thumb); } I should explain that I feel the needed WHERE condition is required because there doesn't seem to be any guarantee that your uri will have the same ID for both a thumbnail and its parent image. This works for all of the current images, but as soon as I start adding pictures with the camera they show up as blank! Debugging shows a dreaded: SkImageDecoder::Factory returned null error and the URI is returned as invalid. These are the same images that work with the previous call. Can anyone either catch my logical failure or point me to some working code?

  I've set up a single table inheritance, but I need a "default" class to use when an unknown polymorphic identity is encountered. The database is not in my control and so the data can be pretty much anything. • DataGridView display row header cell

  I'm trying to display a simple DataGridView linked to a DataTable and I want, ultimately, my first column in the DataTable to be the row header cell for the DataGridView. At this point I will settle for having any value in the row header cell. I can display the DataGridView with all my rows and columns, and with column header cells, but no row header cell. I check the value in the row.HeaderCell.Value, and the data I put there is there. I check row.HeaderCell.Displayed and it is false, but this is read only, so I can't make it true. How do I make the row header cell display? • Typedef and Struct in C and H files

  I've been using the following code to create various struct, but only give people outside of the C file a pointer to it. (Yes, I know that they could potentially mess around with it, so it's not entirely like the private keyword in Java, but that's okay with me). Anyway, I've been using the following code, and I looked at it today, and I'm really surprised that it's actually working, can anyone explain why this is? In my C file, I create my struct, but don't give it a tag in the typedef namespace: struct LABall { int x; int y; int radius; Vector velocity; }; And in the H file, I put this: typedef struct LABall* LABall; I am obviously using #import "LABall.h" in the c file, but I am NOT using #import "LABall.c" in the header file, as that would defeat the whole purpose of a separate header file. So, why am I able to create a pointer to the LABall* struct in the H file when I haven't actually included it? Does it have something to do with the struct namespace working accross files, even when one file is in no way linked to another? Thank you.

• How to use iPhone SDK Private APIs

  I haven't found a comprehensive list of the steps that are required to use a private API from the iPhone Library. In particular, I would like to know how to get header files, if they are even required, how to get it to compile (when I simply add the header, it complains that the functions aren't defined), and what resources one can use to learn about private APIs (e.g. from other user's experiences, such as http://iphonedevwiki.net/ which has a few). I've read in other places that people recommend using class-dump to get the headers. Are there any alternative methods? I've noticed that there are some repositories of iPhone Private SDKs, what are the most up to date resources you would recommend? Most of the previous questions about documentation of private APIs, have all linked to Erica Sadun's website, which doesn't seem to have documentation anymore (all the links on the left are crossed out). Please save the comments about not using private API's... I know of the biggest risks: App will get rejected by Apple. App will break in future updates to the OS. I'm talking about legitimate uses, such as: Private application use (e.g. for unit testing, or messing around to see what's possible)

• jQuery not and classes

  Hi Guys, I have 2 anchor links (a.selector) and when one is clicked it has a class applied to it of 'active-arrow' and the click also removes the class of the same name from the other anchor as well as lowering the opacity to 0.2. I then want to have a fade effect when the user hovers over the anchor that doesn't have 'active-arrow' applied to it so that it goes to full opacity when mouseenters and back to 0.2 when mouseleaves. The problem im having is that both .not and :not don't seem to be working as expected, the hover effect works but if I click on the anchor whilst hovering the 'active-arrow' class is applied but when mouseleaves the opacity is faded down to 0.2 again even though the 'active-arrow' class is applied. Also the hover then doesn't work for the other a link which has had 'active-arrow' removed. I managed to do this but when you try and add a product to the cart from the list it says, "No variant ID was passed."   I have a SQL interface page in my classic ASP web app that allows admin users to run queries against the app's database (MSDE 2000) - it simply consists of a textarea that the user submits and the app returns the resulting list of records as below Dim oRS Set oRS = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset") oRS.ActiveConnection = sConnectionString // run the query - this is for the admin only so doesnt check for sql safe commands etc. oRS.Open Request.Form("txtSQL") If Not oRS.EOF Then // list the field names from the recordset For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).name & "&nbsp;" Next // show the data for each record in the recordset While Not oRS.EOF For i = 0 to oRS.Fields.Count - 1 Response.Write oRS.Fields(i).value & "&nbsp;" Next Response.Write "<br />" oRS.Movenext() Wend End If The problem with this is that if you send it an invalid query (with a spelling mistake, invalid join etc.) instead of throwing back an error immediately, it hangs IIS (you can see this by trying to browse the app from another computer, it fails) for a number of minutes and THEN returns the error. I have NO idea why! Can anyone help?

  I have an Action Method that I'd either like to return JSON from on one condition or redirect on another condition. I thought that I could do this by returning ActionResult from my method but doing this causes the error "not all code paths return a value" Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? • Wpf progressbar not updating during method calculation

  Hey guys, In my app, i have an import option, to read info from a .csv or .txt file and write it to a database. To test, i"m just using 200-300 lines of data. At the beginning of the method, i calculate number of objects/lines to be read. Every time an object is written to the database, i want to update my progressbar.   Hi I have problem with using buttons that are placed in the itemtemplate of the listview which is placed in the itemtemplate of the outer listview. I'll try to simplify the code to show only the idea. I have a objects collection which looks like this: Main object contains a list of innerObjects. Every innerObject contains a list of objects that contain some strings. mainObject listItem innerListItem string string innerListItem string string listItem innerListItem string string I set a mainObject as a itemsSource to the ListView. This listView has a ItemTemplate. This ItemTemplate contains some buttons and inner ListView. Inner ListView also has the item template that contains a button (deleteButton). Pressing this deleteButton I want to delete items (innerListItem) for which this button was created. I can use such functionality when I have a sigle listView. private void clearAndList_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { DependencyObject dep = (DependencyObject)e.OriginalSource; while ((dep != null) && !(dep is System.Windows.Controls.ListViewItem)) { dep = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(dep); } if (dep == null) { return; } ANDconditionsList andList = (ANDconditionsList)ConditionsList.ItemContainerGenerator.ItemFromContainer(dep); orConditionsList.RemoveConditionsSet(andList); } I can't use the same functionality because I can only use the name of the ConditionsList which is the mail listview. The idea is to find the innerlistview and use it instead of ConditionsList, however I don't know if it will work. If anyone have some samples concerning using listview in listview or how to operate the button in a different way please help me

• Objective C / iPhone comparing 2 CLLocations /GPS coordinates

  have an app that finds your GPS location successfully, but I need to be able to compare that GPS with a list of GPS locations, if both are the same , then you get a bonus. I thought I had it working, but it seems not. I have 'newLocation' as the location where you are, I think the problem is that I need to be able to seperate the long and lat data of newLocation.   I am creating a form designer. It will generate PHP code which will produce an HTML form. Users will fill in fields and the PHP will store user input in a MySql database (and, of course, they can use the designer to generate forms which query the database). I am using Borland C++ Builder (very similar to Delphi & and you can get the same idea from VB, MSVC, Qt ... any IDE with a RAD GUI designer). I am unsure whether to allow button / TButton/ input type="button" - other than a single submit button which my form designer program automatically adds to the end of the generated form. But my real question is - did I miss any? It might be nice to have masked edit which only accepts numbers, or maybe some form of "spin control" (TUpDown, or slider + linked read only TEdit), so that the user can click & hold to increment/decrement an integer value. And a calendar component would be nice. Very important: I want to implement it all server-side in PHP, so no client-side JS or Ajax or the likes. If there anything else that I can add to make my generated forms look more impressive in the browser?

I have several checkboxes on my View, when a checkbox is checked, its ID will be saved to an array and then I need to use that array in the controller.   I have a list view and want to put stuff both above(on the y axis) and below(y axis) it including images, text views, and a row of buttons. Below is a simplified version of what I am creating. • ELF: linking: Why do I get undefined references in .so files

  Hi, I'm trying to build a program against wxWidgets, and I get a linker error. I'd like to really understand what it means. The error is: /usr/lib/libwx_baseu-2.8.so: undefined reference to `std::ctype<char>::_M_widen_init() const@GLIBCXX_3.4.11' What I don't understand is why the error is at libwx_baseu-2.8.so. I thought that .so files had all its symbols resolved, contrary to .o files that still need linking. • To Ajax or Not to Ajax a listing page

  Here i am talking about product listing pages where there are multiple filters that filter the list of products appearing on the page like product types, categories price range etc. I have done such pages using both ajax and no ajax way in the past. What I like about using ajax in such page is that, when filters are selected I only update the section that contains the product list. There is no need to refresh the whole page which could end up re-loading the images on top bar, banners etc and slow down the user performance. Ajax way in my opinion becomes more compact and responsive from user experience. Down side for ajax route for me is; since filter states are not maintained in the URL I end up maintaining them on the server. This becomes complicated if I want to handle multi window scenarios and it is also costly to maintain such state on server memory for each session. Not using ajax and simply keeping all filter values on url and refreshing the page is quite simple but the luxury of refreshing only the pane that really needs to be refreshed is lost. Lately I am seeing a lot of large scale e-commerce sites that are using non-ajax approach on their listing pages and this is making me question one more time if it might be more efficient to build non-ajax listing make due to the long term maintenance ease and sacrifice a little bit from user experience. I am about to start implementing a new listing page for a product which I have the flexibility to go either way and I would appreciate your inputs.

• PDCurses TUI C++ Win32 console app - Access violation reading location

  I have downloaded pdcurses source and was able to successfully include curses.h in my project, linked the pre-compiled library and all good. After few hours of trying out the library, I saw the tuidemo.c in the demos folder, compiled it into an executable and brilliant! exactly what I needed for my project. Now the problem is that it's a C code, and I am working on a C++ project in VS c++ 2008. The files I need are tui.c and tui.h How can I include that C file in my C++ code? I saw few suggestions here but the compiler was not too happy with 100's of warnings and errors. How can I go on including/using that TUI pdcurses includes!?
