  • Does Java have dynamic variables for class members?

    - by Arvanem
    Hi folks, I am wondering whether it is possible to make dynamic variables in Java. In other words, variables that change depending on my instructions. FYI, I am making a trading program. A given merchant will have an array of items for sale for various prices. The dynamism I am calling for comes in because each category of items for sale has its own properties. For example, a book item has two properties: int pages, and boolean hardCover. In contrast, a bookmark item has one property, String pattern. Here are skeleton snippets of code so you can see what I am trying to do: public class Merchants extends /* certain parent class */ { // only 10 items for sale to begin with Stock[] itemsForSale = new Stock[10]; // Array holding Merchants public static Merchants[] merchantsArray = new Merchants[maxArrayLength]; // method to fill array of stock goes here } and public class Stock { int stockPrice; int stockQuantity; String stockType; // e.g. book and bookmark // Dynamic variables here, but they should only be invoked depending on stockType int pages; boolean hardCover; String pattern; }

  • Having an issue with Nullable MySQL columns in SubSonic 3.0 templates

    - by omegawkd
    Looking at this line in the Settings.ttinclude string CheckNullable(Column col){ string result=""; if(col.IsNullable && col.SysType !="byte[]" && col.SysType !="string") result="?"; return result; } It describes how it determines if the column is nullable based on requirements and returns either "" or "?" to the generated code. Now I'm not too familiar with the ? nullable type operator but from what I can see a cast is required. For instance, if I have a nullable integer MySQL column and I generate the code using the default template files it returns a line similar to this: int? _User_ID; When trying to compile the project I get the error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'int?' to 'int'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) I checked teh Settings files for the other database types and they all seems to have the same routine. So my question is, is this behaviour expected or is this a bug? I need to solve it one way or the other before I can procede. Thanks for your help.

  • Is there a more efficient way to run enum values through a switch-case statement in C# than this?

    - by C Patton
    I was wondering if there was a more efficient (efficient as in simpler/cleaner code) way of making a case statement like the one below... I have a dictionary. Its key type is an Enum and its value type is a bool. If the boolean is true, I want to change the color of a label on a form. The variable names were changed for the example. Dictionary<String, CustomType> testDict = new Dictionary<String, CustomType>(); //populate testDict here... Dictionary<MyEnum, bool> enumInfo = testDict[someString].GetEnumInfo(); //GetEnumInfo is a function that iterates through a Dictionary<String, CustomType> //and returns a Dictionary<MyEnum, bool> foreach (KeyValuePair<MyEnum, bool> kvp in enumInfo) { switch (kvp.Key) { case MyEnum.Enum1: if (someDictionary[kvp.Key] == true) { Label1.ForeColor = Color.LimeGreen; } else { Label1.ForeColor = Color.Red; } break; case MyEnum.Enum2: if (someDictionary[kvp.Key] == true) { Label2.ForeColor = Color.LimeGreen; } else { Label2.ForeColor = Color.Red; } break; } } So far, MyEnum has 8 different values.. which means I have 8 different case statements.. I know there must be an easier way to do this, I just can't conceptualize it in my head. If anyone could help, I'd greatly appreciate it. I love C# and I learn new things every day.. I absorb it like a sponge :) -CP

  • How can I execute a .sql from C#?

    - by J. Pablo Fernández
    For some integration tests I want to connect to the database and run a .sql file that has the schema needed for the tests to actually run, including GO statements. How can I execute the .sql file? (or is this totally the wrong way to go?) I've found a post in the MSDN forum showing this code: using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.IO; using Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common; using Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { string sqlConnectionString = "Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Integrated Security=True"; FileInfo file = new FileInfo("C:\\myscript.sql"); string script = file.OpenText().ReadToEnd(); SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(sqlConnectionString); Server server = new Server(new ServerConnection(conn)); server.ConnectionContext.ExecuteNonQuery(script); } } } but on the last line I'm getting this error: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --- System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for '' threw an exception. --- .ModuleLoadException: The C++ module failed to load during appdomain initialization. --- System.DllNotFoundException: Unable to load DLL 'MSVCR80.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E). I was told to go and download that DLL from somewhere, but that sounds very hacky. Is there a cleaner way to? Is there another way to do it? What am I doing wrong? I'm doing this with Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, .Net 3.5SP1 and C# 3.0.

  • What are the alternatives to public fields?

    - by James
    I am programming a game in java, and as the question title suggestions i am using public fields in my classes. (for the time being) From what i have seen public fields are bad and i have some understanding why. (but if someone could clarify why you should not use them, that would be appreciated) The thing is that also from what i have seen, (and it seems logical) is that using private fields, but using getters and setters to access them is also not good as it defeats the point of using private fields in the first place. So, my question is, what are the alternatives? or do i really have to use private fields with getters and setters? For reference here is one of my classes, and some of its methods. I will elaborate more if needs be. //The player's fields. public double health; public String name; public double goldCount; public double maxWeight; public double currentWeight; public double maxBackPckSlts; public double usedBackPckSlts; // The current back pack slots in use public double maxHealth; // Maximum amount of health public ArrayList<String> backPack = new ArrayList<String>(); //This method happens when ever the player dynamically takes damage(i.e. when it is not scripted for the player to take damage. //Parameters will be added to make it dynamic so the player can take any spread of damage. public void beDamaged(double damage) { this.health -= damage; if (this.health < 0) { this.health = 0; } } public void gainHealth(double gainedHp) { this.health += gainedHp; if (this.health > this.maxHealth) { this.health = this.maxHealth; } }

  • how to recieve text sms to specific port..

    - by Umesh
    recieve text sms to specific port.. I have been looking for an answer to this question but but to no avail. This question has been popped a few times but nobody seems to have a clear answer. my code is as follows.. --MANIFEST FILE-- <receiver android:name=".SMSRecieve" android:enabled="true" <intent-filter <action android:name="android.intent.action.DATA_SMS_RECEIVED"/ <data android:scheme="sms" / <data android:host="localhost" / <data android:port="15005" / </intent-filter </receiver --SMS sending method-- String messageText = msgTxt.getText().toString(); short SMS_PORT = 15005; SmsManager smsManager = SmsManager.getDefault(); smsManager.sendDataMessage("5556", null, SMS_PORT, messageText.getBytes(), null, null); --Broadcast Reciever code-- static final String ACTION = "android.intent.action.DATA_SMS_RECEIVED"; //static final String ACTION = "android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED";(tried this too, but failed) if (intent.getAction().equals(SMSNotifyExample.ACTION)) { ...do some work.. } I also tried to replace android:name to "android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED" but the result is the same. my application does not recieve the SMS on the specified port. Once i remove the following line its works fine <data android:scheme="sms" / <data android:host="localhost" / <data android:port="15005" / could you suggest me what am i missing??

  • sqlalchemy relation through another (declarative)

    - by clayg
    Is anyone familiar with ActiveRecord's "has_many :through" relations for models? I'm not really a Rails guy, but that's basically what I'm trying to do. As a contrived example consider Projects, Programmers, and Assignments: from sqlalchemy import create_engine from sqlalchemy.orm import sessionmaker from sqlalchemy import Column, ForeignKey from sqlalchemy.types import Integer, String, Text from sqlalchemy.orm import relation from sqlalchemy.ext.declarative import declarative_base Base = declarative_base() class Assignment(Base): __tablename__ = 'assignment' id = Column(Integer, primary_key=True) description = Column(Text) programmer_id = Column(Integer, ForeignKey('programmer.id')) project_id = Column(Integer, ForeignKey('project.id')) def __init__(self, description=description): self.description = description def __repr__(self): return '<Assignment("%s")>' % self.description class Programmer(Base): __tablename__ = 'programmer' id = Column(Integer, primary_key=True) name = Column(String(64)) assignments = relation("Assignment", backref='programmer') def __init__(self, name=name): self.name = name def __repr__(self): return '<Programmer("%s")>' % self.name class Project(Base): __tablename__ = 'project' id = Column(Integer, primary_key=True) name = Column(String(64)) description = Column(Text) assignments = relation("Assignment", backref='project') def __init__(self, name=name, description=description): self.name = name self.description = description def __repr__(self): return '<Project("%s", "%s...")>' % (self.name, self.description[:10]) engine = create_engine('sqlite://') Base.metadata.create_all(engine) Session = sessionmaker(bind=engine) session = Session() Projects have many Assignments. Programmers have many Assignments. (understatement?) But in my office at least, Programmers also have many Projects - I'd like this relationship to be inferred through the Assignments assigned to the Programmer. I'd like the Programmer model to have a attribute "projects" which will return a list of Projects associated to the Programmer through the Assignment model. me = session.query(Programmer).filter_by(name='clay').one() projects = session.query(Project).\ join(Project.assignments).\ join(Assignment.programmer).\ filter(Programmer.id==me.id).all() How can I describe this relationship clearly and simply using the sqlalchemy declarative syntax? Thanks!

  • @WebServices as @Stateless session bean in ejb jar

    - by kislo_metal
    Hi! Scenario: Creating some web service as @Stateless bean, package it as ejb jar. Result - can`t access to wsdl file. Goal: I want to use @WebServices as @Stateless session using ejb jar packaging with accessible wsdl file form web. Web service: @Stateless @WebService(serviceName = "ws.isp.SecurityService", wsdlLocation = "META-INF/wsdl/SecurityService.wsdl") public class SecurityService{ @EJB private Kerberos factory; @EJB private UsersServiceBean uService; public SecurityService() { } @WebMethod @WebResult(name = "SimpleResponse") public SimpleResponse LogOut( @WebParam(name = "sessionUUID", targetNamespace = "https://secure.co.ua/ws/") String sessionUUID ) { SimpleResponse resp = new SimpleResponse(); try{ factory.removeSession(sessionUUID); resp.setError(WSErrorCodes.SUCCESS); }catch (Exception e){ e.printStackTrace(); resp.setError(WSErrorCodes.UNRELOSVED_ERROR); } return resp; } @WebMethod public MySession logIn( @WebParam(name = "username", targetNamespace = "https://secure.co.ua/ws/") String username, @WebParam(name = "password", targetNamespace = "https://secure.co.ua/ws/") String password){ MySession result = new MySession(); try { UserSession us = factory.creatSession(uService.getUser(username, password).getId()); result.setSessionID(us.getSessionUUID().toString()); result.setError(WSErrorCodes.SUCCESS); } catch (NullPointerException e){ e.printStackTrace(); result.setError(WSErrorCodes.UNRELOSVED_USER); } catch (Exception e){ e.printStackTrace(); result.setError(WSErrorCodes.UNRELOSVED_ERROR); } return result; } } In this case I getting Invalid wsdl request http://192.168.44.48:8181/ws.isp.SecurityService/SecurityService when I try to access to wsdl and if do not use description of wsdlLocation I getting blank page. Web service as it self working good. Q1: what is the rule of describing wsdl file location for web services as stateless in ejb jar. Q2: is it possible to generate wsdl file during maven packaging ? Q3: how to generate wsdl file for web service where we have such annotation as @Stateless and @EJB (currently I can generate it only by commenting those annotations) environment: mave 2, ejb 3.1, glassfish v3, jax-ws 2.x Thank you!

  • Exception handling in biztalk 2006 R2

    - by IB
    Hello I have a Biztalk 2006 R2 project (used with ESB Guidance 1) I am calling from orchstration to a static method in c# code, this method uses a class to load a file data into xlang message body at part 0 When i pass filepath which doesnt exists the inside class catch the exception but dont throw it up (in the static method there is a catch block and in the orchstration there is the real handling of the exception) The static method is : public static XLANGMessage LoadFileIntoMessage(XLANGMessage message, string filePath,Encoding encoding) { try { IStreamFactory sf = new FileStreamFactory(filePath,encoding); message[0].LoadFrom(sf); return message; } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } } The Class which load the file stream is : private class FileStreamFactory : IStreamFactory { string _fname; Encoding _encoding; public FileStreamFactory(string fname,Encoding encoding) { _fname = fname; _encoding = encoding; } public Stream CreateStream() { try { StreamReader sr; sr = new StreamReader ( _fname, _encoding ); return sr.BaseStream; } catch (Exception ex) { throw ex; } } } I call the static method from the orchstration and expect to catch the exception in my orchstration after the class and the emthod gets it

  • JCo | How to iterate column wise

    - by cedar715
    The data from SAP is returned as a JCo.Table. However, we don't want to display ALL the columns in the VIEW. So, what we have done is, we have created a file called display.xml which has the JCO.Table columns to be displayed. The display.xml is converted to a List and each field is verified if it is present in the display list(see the code below) which is redundant from second row onwards. final Table outputTable = jcoFunction.getTableParameterList(). getTable("OUTPUT_TABLE"); final int numRows = outputTable.getNumRows(); for (int i = 0; i < numRows; i++) { final FieldIterator fields = outputTable.fields(); while (fields.hasNextFields()) { final JCO.Field recordField = fields.nextField(); final String sapFieldName = recordField.getName(); final DisplayFieldDto key = new DisplayFieldDto(sapFieldName); if (displayFields.contains(key)) { System.out.println("recordField.getName() = " + recordField.getName()); final String sapFieldName = (String)recordField.getValue(); } else { // ignore the field. } } } What is the better way to filter the fields in JCo? Can I iterate column wise? Thank you :)

  • [iphone,twitter] Accessing the Twitter API through a proxy using NSURLConnectionsm, OAuth problem

    - by akaii
    I'm having no problems with sending an update directly via hxxps://api.twitter.com/, but the app (for the Iphone, I'm using NSURLConnections) I'm working is supposed to allow the user to select a preferred proxy (e.g. hxxps://twitter-proxy.appspot.com/api/ or hxxps://nest.onedd.net/api/), and I keep getting a 401 error (Failed to validate oauth signature and token) whenever I try to get an access token via these proxies. Even though I send my POST request to the proxy, I am still using the direct url for the api (https:// api.twitter.com/[rest api path]) in the base string. Despite the 401 error message above, the status code I'm actually getting from connection:didReceiveResponse: is 200, probably because it was able to successfully contact the proxy... Is there anything else that I need to consider when using a proxy to access the API? Should anything in the authorization header change, for example? Or the base string? I can manage to connect via Basic Auth without issue, but support for that will be dropped in a month. On a somewhat unrelated note... What are the possible causes of Twitter's error 403, and how do you distinguish between them? Is the only way to differentiate an error due to exceeding the status update limit for an hour (150 per hour) vs for a day (1000 per day) by checking the string reply returned in the response? Is there any way for me to simulate a status update limit error without going through the motions of actually sending 150/1000 tweets?

  • Python - Why use anything other than uuid4() for unique strings?

    - by orokusaki
    I see quit a few implementations of unique string generation for things like uploaded image names, session IDs, et al, and many of them employ the usage of hashes like SHA1, or others. I'm not questioning the legitimacy of using custom methods like this, but rather just the reason. If I want a unique string, I just say this: >>> import uuid >>> uuid.uuid4() 07033084-5cfd-4812-90a4-e4d24ffb6e3d And I'm done with it. I wasn't very trusting before I read up on uuid, so I did this: >>> import uuid >>> s = set() >>> for i in range(5000000): # That's 5 million! >>> s.add(uuid.uuid4()) ... ... >>> len(s) 5000000 Not one repeater (I didn't expect one considering the odds are like 1.108e+50, but it's comforting to see it in action). You could even half the odds by just making your string by combining 2 uuid4()s. So, with that said, why do people spend time on random() and other stuff for unique strings, etc? Is there an important security issue or other regarding uuid?

  • C# Regex - Match and replace, Auto Increment

    - by Marc Still
    I have been toiling with a problem and any help would be appreciated. Problem: I have a paragraph and I want to replace a variable which appears several times (Variable = @Variable). This is the easy part, but the portion which I am having difficulty is trying to replace the variable with different values. I need for each occurrence to have a different value. For instance, I have a function that does a calculation for each variable. What I have thus far is below: private string SetVariables(string input, string pattern){ Regex rx = new Regex(pattern); MatchCollection matches = rx.Matches(input); int i = 1; if(matches.Count > 0) { foreach(Match match in matches) { rx.Replace(match.ToString(), getReplacementNumber(i)); i++ } } I am able to replace each variable that I need to with the number returned from getReplacementNumber(i) function, but how to I put it back into my original input with the replaced values, in the same order found in the match collection? Thanks in advance! Marcus

  • Is it possible to add JPA annotation to superclass instance variables?

    - by Kristofer Borgstrom
    Hi, I am creating entities that are the same for two different tables. In order do table mappings etc. different for the two entities but only have the rest of the code in one place - an abstract superclass. The best thing would be to be able to annotate generic stuff such as column names (since the will be identical) in the super class but that does not work because JPA annotations are not inherited by child classes. Here is an example: public abstract class MyAbstractEntity { @Column(name="PROPERTY") //This will not be inherited and is therefore useless here protected String property; public String getProperty() { return this.property; } //setters, hashCode, equals etc. methods } Which I would like to inherit and only specify the child-specific stuff, like annotations: @Entity @Table(name="MY_ENTITY_TABLE") public class MyEntity extends MyAbstractEntity { //This will not work since this field does not override the super class field, thus the setters and getters break. @Column(name="PROPERTY") protected String property; } Any ideas or will I have to create fields, getters and setters in the child classes? Thanks, Kris

However git refuses to combine --graph with -g How can reproduce the first sample with a format string which I can further customize?

    I've been recently working on a program that convert flac files to mp3 in C# using flac.exe and lame.exe, here are the code that do the job: ProcessStartInfo piFlac = new ProcessStartInfo( "flac.exe" ); piFlac.CreateNoWindow = true; piFlac.UseShellExecute = false; piFlac.RedirectStandardOutput = true; piFlac.Arguments = string.Format( flacParam, SourceFile ); ProcessStartInfo piLame = new ProcessStartInfo( "lame.exe" ); piLame.CreateNoWindow = true; piLame.UseShellExecute = false; piLame.RedirectStandardInput = true; piLame.RedirectStandardOutput = true; piLame.Arguments = string.Format( lameParam, QualitySetting, ExtractTag( SourceFile ) ); Process flacp = null, lamep = null; byte[] buffer = BufferPool.RequestBuffer(); flacp = Process.Start( piFlac ); lamep = new Process(); lamep.StartInfo = piLame; lamep.OutputDataReceived += new DataReceivedEventHandler( this.ReadStdout ); lamep.Start(); lamep.BeginOutputReadLine(); int count = flacp.StandardOutput.BaseStream.Read( buffer, 0, buffer.Length ); while ( count != 0 ) { lamep.StandardInput.BaseStream.Write( buffer, 0, count ); count = flacp.StandardOutput.BaseStream.Read( buffer, 0, buffer.Length ); } Here I set the command line parameters to tell lame.exe to write its output to stdout, and make use of the Process.OutPutDataRecerved event to gather the output data, which is mostly binary data, but the DataReceivedEventArgs.Data is of type "string" and I have to convert it to byte[] before put it to cache, I think this is ugly and I tried this approach but the result is incorrect. Is there any way that I can read the raw redirected stdout stream, either synchronously or asynchronously, bypassing the OutputDataReceived event? PS: the reason why I don't use lame to write to disk directly is that I'm trying to convert several files in parallel, and direct writing to disk will cause severe fragmentation. Thanks a lot!

  • std::list iterator: get next element

    - by sheepsimulator
    I'm trying to build a string using data elements stored in a std::list, where I want commas placed only between the elements (ie, if elements are {A,B,C,D} in list, result string should be "A,B,C,D". This code does not work: typedef std::list< shared_ptr<EventDataItem> > DataItemList; // ... std::string Compose(DataItemList& dilList) { std::stringstream ssDataSegment; for(iterItems = dilList.begin(); iterItems != dilList.end(); iterItems++) { // Lookahead in list to see if next element is end if((iterItems + 1) == dilList.end()) { ssDataSegment << (*iterItems)->ToString(); } else { ssDataSegment << (*iterItems)->ToString() << ","; } } return ssDataSegment.str(); } How do I get at "the-next-item" in a std::list using an iterator? I would expect that it's a linked-list, why can't I get at the next item?

  • Sql Exception: Error converting data type numeric to numeric

    - by Lucifer
    Hello We have a very strange issue with a database that has been moved from staging to production. The first time the database was moved it was by detaching, copying and reattaching, the second time we tried restoring from a backup of the staging. Both SQL Servers are the same version of MS SQL 2008, running on 64 bit hardware. The code accessing the database is the same build, built using the .net 2.0 framework. Here is the error message and some of the stack trace: Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Error converting data type numeric to numeric. Stack Trace: [SqlException (0x80131904): Error converting data type numeric to numeric.] System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) +1953274 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) +4849707 System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj) +194 System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) +2392 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.FinishExecuteReader(SqlDataReader ds, RunBehavior runBehavior, String resetOptionsString) +204 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReaderTds(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, Boolean async) +954 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, String method, DbAsyncResult result) +162 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe) +175 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() +137 Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.4200; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.4016

  • Using a php://memory wrapper causes errors...

    - by HorusKol
    I'm trying to extend the PHP mailer class from Worx by adding a method which allows me to add attachments using string data rather than path to the file. I came up with something like this: public function addAttachmentString($string, $name='', $encoding = 'base64', $type = 'application/octet-stream') { $path = 'php://memory/' . md5(microtime()); $file = fopen($path, 'w'); fwrite($file, $string); fclose($file); $this->AddAttachment($path, $name, $encoding, $type); } However, all I get is a PHP warning: PHP Warning: fopen() [<a href='function.fopen'>function.fopen</a>]: Invalid php:// URL specified There aren't any decent examples with the original documentation, but I've found a couple around the internet (including one here on SO), and my usage appears correct according to them. Has anyone had any success with using this? My alternative is to create a temporary file and clean up - but that will mean having to write to disc, and this function will be used as part of a large batch process and I want to avoid slow disc operations (old server) where possible. This is only a short file but has different information for each person the script emails.

  • Is this trivial function silly?

    - by Chas. Owens
    I came across a function today that made me stop and think. I can't think of a good reason to do it: sub replace_string { my $string = shift; my $regex = shift; my $replace = shift; $string =~ s/$regex/$replace/gi; return $string; } The only possible value I can see to this is that it gives you the ability to control the default options used with a substitution, but I don't consider that useful. My first reaction upon seeing this function get called is "what does this do?". Once I learn what it does, I am going to assume it does that from that point on. Which means if it changes, it will break any of my code that needs it to do that. This means the function will likely never change, or changing it will break lots of code. Right now I want to track down the original programmer and beat some sense into him or her. Is this a valid desire, or am I missing some value this function brings to the table?

  • Overloading operator>> to a char buffer in C++ - can I tell the stream length?

    - by exscape
    I'm on a custom C++ crash course. I've known the basics for many years, but I'm currently trying to refresh my memory and learn more. To that end, as my second task (after writing a stack class based on linked lists), I'm writing my own string class. It's gone pretty smoothly until now; I want to overload operator that I can do stuff like cin my_string;. The problem is that I don't know how to read the istream properly (or perhaps the problem is that I don't know streams...). I tried a while (!stream.eof()) loop that .read()s 128 bytes at a time, but as one might expect, it stops only on EOF. I want it to read to a newline, like you get with cin to a std::string. My string class has an alloc(size_t new_size) function that (re)allocates memory, and an append(const char *) function that does that part, but I obviously need to know the amount of memory to allocate before I can write to the buffer. Any advice on how to implement this? I tried getting the istream length with seekg() and tellg(), to no avail (it returns -1), and as I said looping until EOF (doesn't stop reading at a newline) reading one chunk at a time.
