• MPlayer refuses to generate mono wav file

  I want to downsample an existing audio file to 8KHz mono. This command line downsamples it to stereo: mplayer -quiet -vo null -vc dummy -af volume=0,resample=8000:0:1 -ao pcm:waveheader:file="/tmp/blah1.wav" ~/from_my_cellphone.3ga It generates a file that the file utility identifies as stereo: $ file /tmp/blah1.wav /tmp/blah1.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 8000 Hz Now, if I read the documentation correctly, I should add pan=1:0.5:0.5 so I get a file that's half the size: mplayer -quiet -vo null -vc dummy -af volume=0,resample=8000:0:1:pan=1:0.5:0.5 -ao pcm:waveheader:file="/tmp/blah2.wav" ~/from_my_cellphone.3ga But it doesn't! blah2.wav is identical to blah1.wav! What am I doing wrong?

• Is there a cheaper non-express non-student, non-msdn version of Visual Studio 2010 that supports plugins in the US than the $710 Professional Edition?

  I've never actually purchased a copy of Visual Studio myself. SharpDevelop and Express edition have always been good enough for my personal use, and my employers always furnished me with the IDEs I needed to serve them. However, I'm thinking of actually paying for a copy for my personal laptop. I need this mainly so I can open solutions that contain web projects. So my question is: Is there an edition cheaper than the $710 Pro edition on Amazon that will do what I need: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-C5E-00521-Visual-Studio-Professional/dp/B0038KTO8S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1287456230&sr=8-2 ? What I need is defined as: Open up a solution with C#, Web App, VB.NET, and Web Projects. Install addins like resharper, testdriven.net, etc, SCM plugins, etc. Some level of db project support. At least to be able to open a dbproj. I only need that for SCM hooks. SSMS and SQLCMD are good enough for actually editing databases. Ability to install F#, IronPython, IronRuby etc. Now naturally I'm a fairly intelligent resourceful person so I realize I can get Visual Studio in a questionable manner. Thats not what I'm looking to do. I want a legal copy, I don't want a student copy, or an MSDN copy. I want a real copy, I just want to make sure I get the cheapest edition that serves my needs.

• RRAS Svr on win 2003 provides same gateway as the ip to vpn clients and subnet as 255.255.255.255

  Hello - I've setup a RRAS Svr on win 2003 svr, to provide VPN access to clients. I've followed all directions in microsoft documentation to finish the setup. A VPN client successfully connects when I connect to the VPN svr. But when I look at the ipconfig info, I see that the IP and Gateway are same and subnet is 255.255.255.255. Example IP - 10.0.0.121 Gateway - 10.0.0.121 subnet - 255.255.255.255 DNS - 10.0.0.12 What am I doing wrong?

• A fix for the design time error in MVVM Light V4.1

  For those of you who installed V4.1 of MVVM Light and created a project for Windows Phone 8, you will have noticed an error showing up in the design surface (either in Visual Studio designer, or in Expression Blend). The error says: “Could not load type ‘System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanging’ from assembly ‘mscorlib.extensions’” with additional information about version numbers. The error is caused by an incompatibility between versions of System.Windows.Interactivity. Because this assembly is strongly named, any version incompatibility is causing the kind of error shown here (for an interesting discussion on the strong naming issue, see this thread on Codeplex). I managed to resolve the issue for Windows Phone 8 and will publish a cleaned up installer next week. In the mean time, in order to allow you to continue development, please follow the steps: Download the new DLLs zip package (MVVMLight_V4_1_25_WP8). Right click on the Zip file and select Properties from the context menu. Press the “Unblock” button (if available) and then OK. Right click again on the zip package and select “Extract all…”. Select a known location for the new DLLs. Open the MVVM Light project with the design time error in Visual Studio 2012. Open the References folder in the Solution Explorer. Select the following DLLs: GalaSoft.MvvmLight.dll, GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.dll, Microsoft.Practices.ServiceLocation.dll and System.Windows.Interactivity.dll. Press “delete” and confirm to remove the DLLs from your project. Right click on References and select Add Reference from the context menu. Browse to the folder with the new DLLs. Select the four new DLLs and press OK. Rebuild your application, and open it again in Blend or in the Visual Studio designer. The error should be gone now. In the next few days, as time allows, I will publish a new MSI containing a fixed version of the DLLs as well as a few other improvements. • How do you make slides for programming talks?

  I've given a few talks recently and I have not found a good way to make slides. Here are a few desirable characteristics for programming slides: They're slides. A standard emacs buffer won't do it. They have syntax highlighting for code. They support basic formatting, like font size and color and bullets. No fancy animations needed. The only animation I desire is one-by-one appearance of bullets. So far I have considered: Microsoft Office - out of the question for Linux users. OpenOffice.org - too much for my needs, code formatting/highlighting needs to be done externally and pasted in. On the plus side supports bullets, bullet-by-bullet animation, and font formatting. Emacs - Supports all the code formatting but I haven't found a slides mode that lets me transition from one chunk to another. HTML5 - I once made slides using html5rocks as a template. It supports everything, but is too hard and time-consuming the "throw together" a few slides before a minor talk. Also the html5-only features may not work on the podium computer's installed browser. Any suggestions for programs/techniques for making code-centric presentations?

• What does Libre Office do to an existing Excel sheet to bloat its size?

  I try to avoid using Libre Office on existing Excel created workbooks because of the potential for unpleasant results. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..) Libre Office on Mac OS 10.6 Types of data stored in this workbook: Text Integers 1 column with a simple formula spanning the entire worksheet representing that particular row (=CONCATENATE(A2285,B2285,D2285), =CONCATENATE(A2286,B2286,D2286), etc.) Total of 3,500 plus rows Here is a photo with details described within, but I'll go ahead and explain the photo as well: This screenshot is from Dropbox history of the .xlsx workbook. Version 61 - 68 were Office Excel. Version 69 - 73 were Libre Office.

• Installing MFC (vs2005) application on Windows 2008 R2 64

  I've build an application that runs on Windows 2003, it is an old style MFC application. Today I need to install the application on a Windows 2008 R2 64 system. I have failures during installation and the application does not run. The application is build with VisualStudio2005, and uses COM objects. The MSI register the objects but it fails with the error code : HRESULT -2147010895. Any idea why the COM registration failed? I've tried to install the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)" but it doesn't help. I've tried to register the COM objects with the regsvr32 after the installation but sadly it doesn't help. I've tries to install the application on Windows 2008 R2 32, and it works perfectly. I am quite new with 64 systems, so any help will be appreciated. tia olich

• Email server for huge number of subscriber

  My question is that my company is thinking of providing a free email account for each of its customers. As a new company we will assume that our corporate email system will be MS Exchange server which will support about 1000 employees. They are asking why not adding the customer list to be a part of Exchange users. My suggestion was to separate the two systems, for the corporate we can use Exchange but for customers (around 30000) we have to use a Linux based system. My only argument was that Linux can be used for enterprise services like this and Microsoft may fail. What do you suggest? And if you are with me on choosing Linux as the server platform, what do you suggest to use as an alternative for Exchange in Linux? Thank you.

  All my life I used Microsoft Office on Windows for document writing and then Libre(Open)Office on Linux. This is not a bad software, but not perfect and I have some complaints. Now on my usual desktop I have Linux. I heard from people who work a lot with documents of different type and complexity (diagrams, articles, document design, presentation) that latex is a perfect thing. I have spent two days exploring Latex and my opinion as a beginner that it is out-of-date (the concepts of Latex language). The language is not intuitive and sometimes even complex. Can somebody advise another software product for document writing?

• Styling ASP.NET MVC Error Messages

That’s not the case, though. You actually have quite a number of options with regard to styling those boogers. Like many of the helpers in MVC, the Html.ValidationMessageFor helper has multiple prototypes. One of those prototypes lets you pass a dictionary, or anonymous object, representing attribute values for the resulting markup. @Html.ValidationMessageFor( m => Model.Whatever, null, new { @class = “my-error” }) By passing the htmlAttributes parameter, which is the last parameter in the call to the prototype of Html.ValidationMessageFor shown above, I can style the resulting markup by associating styles to the my-error css class.  When you run your MVC project and view the source, you’ll notice that MVC adds the class field-validation-valid or field-validation-error to a span created by the helper. You could actually just style those classes instead of adding your own…it’s really up to you. Now, what if you wanted to move that error message around? Maybe you want to put that error message in a box or a callout. How do you do that? When I first started using MVC, it didn’t occur to me that the Html.ValidationMessageFor helper just spits out a little bit of markup. I wanted to put the error messages in boxes with white backgrounds, our site originally had a black background, and show a little nib on the side to make them look like callouts or conversation bubbles. Not realizing how much freedom there is in the styling and markup, and after reading someone else’s post, I created my own version of the ValidationMessageFor helper that took out the span and replaced it with divs. I styled the divs to produce the effect of a popup box and had a lot of trouble with sizing and such. That’s a really silly and unnecessary way to solve this problem. If you want to move your error messages around, all you have to do is move the helper. MVC doesn’t appear to care where you put it, which makes total sense when you think about it. Html.ValidationMessageFor is just spitting out a little markup using a little bit of reflection on the name you’re passing it. All you’ve got to do to style it the way you want it is to put it in whatever markup you desire. Take a look at this, for example… <div class=”my-anchor”>@Html.ValidationMessageFor( m => Model.Whatever )</div> @Html.TextBoxFor(m => Model.Whatever) Now, given that bit of HTML, consider the following CSS… <style> .my-anchor { position:relative; } .field-validation-error {    background-color:white;    border-radius:4px;    border: solid 1px #333;    display: block;    position: absolute;    top:0; right:0; left:0;    text-align:right; } </style> The my-anchor class establishes an anchor for the absolutely positioned error message. Now you can move the error message wherever you want it relative to the anchor. Using css3, there are some other tricks. For example, you can use the :not(:empty) selector to select the span and apply styles based upon whether or not the span has text in it. Keep it simple, though. Moving your elements around using absolute positioning may cause you issues on devices with screens smaller than your standard laptop or PC. While looking for something else recently, I saw someone asking how to style the output for Html.ValidationSummary.  Html.ValidationSummery is the helper that will spit out a list of property errors, general model errors, or both. Html.ValidationSummary spits out fairly simple markup as well, so you can use the techniques described above with it also. The resulting markup is a <ul><li></li></ul> unordered list of error messages that carries the class validation-summary-errors In the forum question, the user was asking how to hide the error summary when there are no errors. Their errors were in a red box and they didn’t want to show an empty red box when there aren’t any errors. Obviously, you can use the css3 selectors to apply different styles to the list when it’s empty and when it’s not empty; however, that’s not support in all browsers. Well, it just so happens that the unordered list carries the style validation-summary-valid when the list is empty. While the div rendered by the Html.ValidationSummary helper renders a visible div, containing one invisible listitem, you can always just style the whole div with “display:none” when the validation-summary-valid class is applied and make it visible when the validation-summary-errors class is applied. Or, if you don’t like that solution, which I like quite well, you can also check the model state for errors with something like this… int errors = ViewData.ModelState.Sum(ms => ms.Value.Errors.Count); That’ll give you a count of the errors that have been added to ModelState. You can check that and conditionally include markup in your page if you want to. The choice is yours. Obviously, doing most everything you can with styles increases the flexibility of the presentation of your solution, so I recommend going that route when you can. • Unable to Uninstall Exchange 2010 ("Internet Newsgroups" public folder)

  I am trying to uninstall Exchange 2010, before installing a new instance of Exchange 2010 SP1 on a different server. (Our production Exchange server is 2003) We have met all of the Mailbox uninstall prereqs except for the following: Error: Uninstall cannot continue. Database 'Public Folder Database 1579722947': The public folder database "Public Folder Database 1579722947" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database. For detailed instructions about how to remove a public folder database, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=81409&clcid=0x409. Recommended Action: We have been able to delete all Public Folders in the 2010 storage group except for the one (previously replicated) folder - "Internet Newsgroups". How can I delete this folder without impacting public folders on the production Exchange 2003 server? • Default Keyboard for new users in Windows 7

  I just installed Windows 7 and I want all users signing in to the computer to see the Language Bar customized with the following three languages: "English (American)" "French (Standard)" "Chinese (Simplified PRC)" I am running the following four lines of code at log on in order to change the registry such that each user will see the language bar, and then have access to the three keyboard layouts mentioned above. reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\CTF\LangBar" /v ShowStatus /t REG_DWORD /d 4 /f reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 2 /d 0000040c reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 3 /d 00000c0a reg add "HKCU\Keyboard Layout\Preload" /v 4 /d 00000804 The above works fine, but with one small/major inconvenience: the user has to log off and then log back on in order for these changes to take effect and see the language bar, as described above. The question becomes: How can I force these changes to take effect so that users don't have to log off and then log back in to see the language bar. This has to be done automatically when users log in.

• PASS: Total Registrations

  At the Summit you’ll see PASS announce the total attendance and the “total registrations”.  The total registrations is the sum of the conference attendees and the pre-conference registrations.  A single person can be counted three times (conference plus two pre-cons) in the total registration count. When I was doing marketing for the Summit this drove me nuts.  I couldn’t figure out why anyone would use total registrations.  However, when I tried to stop reporting this number I got lots of pushback.  Apparently this is how conferences compare themselves to each other.  Vendors, sponsors and Microsoft all wanted to know our total registration number.  I was even asked why we weren’t doing more “things” that people could register for so that our number would be even larger.  This drove me nuts. I understand that many of you are very detail oriented.  I just want to make sure you understand what numbers you’re seeing when we include them in the keynote at the Summit.

  I want to install VMware Workstation in Windows and Linux host silently. In Windows host, I can use the silent installation features of the Microsoft Windows Installer. But I didn't find a way to perform silent install/uninstall in Linux host. I had to click "I agree" or "Close" to make the installation continue or complete. If there has a Workstation installed, I can use vmware-installer -i path to installation file" --console --required to update the Workstation to a different version. But this command only exists after a Workstation has been installed.

• Solving &ldquo;XmlSchemaException: The global element '&lt;elementName&gt;' has already been declare

  I recently encountered this error when I attempted to consume a new hosted WCF service.  The service used the Request/Response model and had been properly decorated.  The response and request objects were marked as DataContracts and had a specified namespace.   My WCF service interface was marked as a ServiceContract and shared the namespace attribute value.   Everything should have been fine, right? [ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://schemas.myclient.com/09/12")] public interface IProductActivationService { [OperationContract] ActivateSoftwareResponse ActivateSoftware(ActivateSoftwareRequest request); } well, not exactly.  Apparently the WSDL generator was having an issue: System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchemaException: The global element 'http://schemas.myclient.com/09/12:ActivateSoftwareResponse' has already been declared. After digging I’ve found the problem; the WSDL generator has some reserved suffixes for its entities, including Response, Request, Solicit (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms731045.aspx).  The error message is actually the result of a naming conflict.  The WSDL generator uses the namespace of the service to build its reserved types.  The service contract and data contract share a namespace, which coupled with the response/request name suffixes I was using in my class names, resulted in the SchemaException. The Fix: Two options: Rename my data contract entities to use a non-reserved keyword suffix (i.e.  change ActivateSoftwareResponse to ActivateSoftwareResp). or; Change the namespace of the data contracts to differ from the service contract namespace. I chose option 2 and changed all my data contracts to use a “http://schemas.myclient.com/09/12/data” namespace value. This avoided a name collision and I was able to produce my WSDL and consume my service.

• Windows XP Activation failed, now what?

  I have a computer with (presumably unlicensed) Windows XP. The activation (over the internet) failed, and I now I cannot get into Windows. After calling Microsoft, it seems like I will have to reinstall everything and install a freshly bought operating system. What are my options here? Is it worth trying the millions of keys and key generators out there? EDIT: I have no way of contacting the manufacturer (it's a no-name box, definitely not Dell, HP or IBM). Would there actually be a key supplied with my version of XP? If its not genuine, wouldnt I just have any old key? And that key would fail activation any way?

• No internet connection for some programmes after installing ad hoc wireless network

  After installing a wireless network (through the program iPhoneModem) several programmes have stopped working when connected to the Internet using another wireless connection. Working programmes: Firefox (browser) uTorrent (p2p) FileZilla (ftp) etc. Programmes that are not working: Chrome (browser) Digsby (IM client) etc. I'm running Windows 7. I have tried to disable Windows Firewall entirely as well as AVG anti virus, with no effect. I've tried to run the FixIt program from Microsoft adressing a corrupt TCP/IP stack. This too had no effect. Any suggestions?

• Windows 7 upgrade advisor issue

  I am preparing to migrate a pretty old XP machine to Windows 7. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and got a couple of smaller issues (low 512Mb RAM complaints and similar stuff). Apart from that, everything else was shown as compatible, including my old ATI Radeon 9550/X1050 card: ATI Radeon 9550/X1550 Series: This device is compatible with Windows 7. The thing that concerns me is that people around the web seem to be unable to actually find a Windows 7 driver for this card. Even the ATI web page states that this is a legacy device: If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7. [...] Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD [...] Should I trust the Advisor and continue with the update? Does this mean Microsoft will provide at least a generic driver which will allow hardware acceleration with this card?

• VPN connects but my browsers and messenger don't connect

  I have no problem VPN into work. As of last night, everything worked fine. But as of this A.M., none of my browsers connect and Microsoft Messenger will not connect. I did nothing, but had a pending a OSX update. I rebooted.. Still no internet. All network connections working, clearly, since VPN works. Its how I am doing this post now, is via VPN and remote desktopping to work computer. This just showed up as of this morning not working. I renewed DHCP, etc.. but cannot ping anywhere.

• Why do we still have to use drive letters to identify file systems?

  A friend has run into a problem where they installed Windows 7 from an external drive, and the internal boot drive is now assigned to H:. Theoretically this shouldn't cause problems because there are programming interfaces for getting the drive letter for the system drive. In practice though, there are quite a few programs that assume that C: is the only possible location for the system directories, and they refuse to run with the system directories on H:. That's not Microsoft's fault, but it's a pain none-the-less. The general consensus seems to be that a re-install, setting the internal boot drive to C:, is the only way to avoid fix these problems. UNIX-like systems display all file systems in a single unified directory tree and mostly seem to avoid problems like this. Is it possible to configure a Windows system without reference to drive letters, or does the importance of backwards compatibility mean that Windows will be working with drive letters from now until doomsday?

• Win2008 - restrict VPN user permissions

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office. • Dhcp clients fail after successful import of server to new machine

  I transfered the configs of a dhcp server from one server to another both running Windows Server 2003 R2 following http [://] support.microsoft.com/kb/325473. The new server has a statically configured ip(outside the scope) like the old one. Stopped the server on the old, and started up in the new server (authorized too) - but when I ipconfig /renew from a client its network interface fails with all 0.0.0.0 (or 169...*). I read somewhere I need to reconcile the scope to sync the new registry values ('ll try this tomorrow). What other troubleshooting steps can I take other than these (which didn't help)? Things work fine when the old server resurrects and the new one is taken down. The new server showed there was no requests for offer.

• Leave Windows Session Logged On

  Is a bad idea for any reason to leave accounts logged onto Windows remote desktop sessions? So instead of logging off, just closing the session so it locks. In this case, the limited number of remote desktop connections is not an issue. I am just wondering if anyone has seen sessions leak memory over time or maybe security issues with doing this, etc... I could see if programs were left open they might suck up and or leak memory, but has anyone seen this with Microsoft software such as Control Panels, Management Consoles, and Exchange System Administrator?

• Outlook Registry Key Damaged; Tried "Fix It" and lost everything

  My outlook 2007 (on Windows 7 64 bit) worked fine for two weeks. I then installed a printer/scanner/copier and the Outlook Window wouldn't open. I went to Microsoft's website and found a page that said my registry key was damaged. The page had a link to a Fix It program. I ran the program and it looks like all my Outlook data was wiped out. Can I get the data back? For future reference, how should I protect myself if the key goes bad again? Do you think I should unistall Outlook and re-install?
