• Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

  I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it). • Simple but efficient way to store a series of small changes to an image?

  I have a series of images. Each one is typically (but not always) similar to the previous one, with 3 or 4 small rectangular regions updated. I need to record these changes using a minimum of disk space. The source images are not compressed, but I would like the deltas to be compressed. I need to be able to recreate the images exactly as input (so a lossy video codec is not appropriate.) I am thinking of something along the lines of: Composite the new image with a negative of the old image Save the composited image in any common format that can compress using RLE (probably PNG.) Recreate the second image by compositing the previous image with the delta. Although the images have an alpha channel, I can ignore it for the purposes of this function. Is there an easy-to-implement algorithm or free Java library with this capability?

• What is resource-ref in web.xml used for?

  Hi everyone, I'm just wondering when/why you would define a resource-ref element in your web.xml file? I would have thought that it would be defined in your web/app server using JNDI and then look up the JNDI reference in your Java code? The resource-ref definition seems a bit redundant to me and I can't think of when it might be useful. • How do I tell eclipse to auto-generate or retain stubs when it starts and does a clean build?

  I'm working on a Java application that uses JavaSpace. We're developing this in Eclipse. There are a couple instances where we are inserting code into the JavaSpace to do some more advanced space notification logic. Doing this requires that we generate stubs for the classes used within the JavaSpace. We use an external script to generate these stubs. The problem is that whenever Eclipse restarts, it does a clean build of the whole application. When it does this, it deletes all the stubs and we have to regenerate them. I would like to find a way to either tell Eclipse not to remove the _stub.class and _skel.class files within the bin folder where the .class files are placed. Either that, or somehow teach Eclipse to generate the stub files whenever it does a rebuild (and I suppose whenever the source files from which the stubs are generated changes). How can I do one of these, so that we don't have to manually build the stubs every time we start up Eclipse?

• Can not set Character Encoding using sun-web.xml

  I am trying to send special characters like spanish chars from my page to a JSP page as a form parameter. When I try get the parameter which I sent, it shows that as "?" (Question mark).   I have a db, that stores dates in OleDateTime format, in GMT timezone. I've implemented a class, extending Date in java to represent that in classic date format. But my class is locale-dependent (I'm in GMT+2). Therefore, it converts the date in the db as date - 2 hours. How do I make it convert the date correctly? I want my class to be locale-independent, always using GMT timezone. • Recieving server broadcast on mobile in real time

  I have to write a simple mobile application that is able to recieve broadcast from a server, connected using GPRS, over a secure SSL connection. The amount of data mobile need to recieve is very small (about 100 character string for a single broadcast and maximum 10 broadcast per minute) I need to display it on screen and generate a alert sound (and vibrate the device). Client need not to send anything back to server. (ofcourse at the time of intialization the client app need to send some data for authorization) The target mobile plateform is symbion S60 and Blackberry. How can i do this? What tools, SDK and Third party framework (if needed) i should use? I am familier with java and network programming but not for mobile device.

  I am trying to learn the following things: How mp3 file looks like internally? I found this: http://mpgedit.org/mpgedit/mpeg_format/MP3Format.html but it seems old. Is there any recent changes to the format? I couldnt find any. How to open a mp3 file in java and look for bytes? I tried using audiostream but I am getting a lot of zeros and signed short integers which nowhere resemble the header/body format as mentioned in the above link. Am I wrong in interpreting the bytes? How to get amplitude, frequency and pitch of a mp3 file? No idea. Can you please suggest some book or tutorial? Can you please help me in getting the solution for the above questions? • Guice creates Swing components outside of UI thread problem?

  I'm working on Java Swing application with Google Guice as an IOC container. Things are working pretty well. There are some UI problems. When a standard L&F is replaced with Pushing pixels Substance L&F application is not running due to Guice's Swing components creation outside of UI thread. Is there a way to tell Guice to create Swing components in the UI thread? Maybe I should create custom providers which will return Swing components after SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(Runnable) creates them. I don't like the idea of running the whole application in UI thread, but maybe it's just a perfect solution.

• Having difficulty add a custom icon to a JFrame

  Hi, I have been trying to change the icon in the frame. I have virtually tried everything: The icon is 16x16 which is the right size ....doesn't work I've trying PNG,GIF and JPG formats none of them work. Tried different way of setting the icon....doesn't work. • Why does Spring Security's BindAuthenticator require read permissions for users?

  Hi all, I'm currently implementing/configuring the LDAP authentication of a Java web application using Spring Security 3.0. I'm using Microsoft AD LDS as LDAP server and chose the Spring's BindAuthenticator. I found out that the authentication only works if the authenticated user is a member of the partition's Readers role. The BindAuthenticator tries to read the user's attributes after the authentication, which seems reasonable in scenarios where authorities are retrieved from the directory service. Being new to LDAP and AD, is this an acceptable practise when the application is integrated in an existing AD structure? Can fine-tune an give the user dns only read permissions for their own attributes rather than adding them to the Reader group? Thanks Thomas

I think it is because itr.next() is not considered as a string. How can I solve this problem? I tried to replace Set keys by Set<String> keys. It did not help.

  Hi every one, I'm trying to configure seam/ehcache following the tutorial from jboss page: http://docs.jboss.org/seam/2.1.2/reference/en-US/html/cache.html I put the ehcache.1.2.3.jar in project.ear/lib and injected CacheProvider as especified, but the CacheProvider always return null. The documentation doesn't show any aditional configuration for ehcache, just for jboss cache.   Hi all I'm using JBPM 4.3 and trying hard to find a way to terminate one processInstance. First I simply used something like: executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); However I got exception thrown out. "exception while executing command org.jbpm.pvm.internal.cmd.EndProcessInstance java.lang.NullPointerException" Then I googled to find this post http://community.jboss.org/thread/146478, which didn't seem to give a resolution. I tried nevertheless to end all executions of the processInstance by calling ((ExecutionImpl) execution).end(); But the same exception was thrown again when I finally try to call executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); Did anyone have the same experience and solution?

  I wanted to add background image to my JFrame. Background image means I can later add Components on the JFrame or JPanel Although I coudn't find how to add background image to a JFrame, I found out how to add background image to a JPanel from here: How to set background image in Java? This solved my problem, but now since my JFrame is resizable I want to keep the image in center. • Is lock returned by ReentrantReadWriteLock equivalent to it's read and write locks?

  Hello, I have been looking around for the answer to this, but no joy. In Java, is using the lock created by ReentrantReadWriteLock equivalent to getting the read and write locks as returned by readLock.lock() and writeLock.lock()? In other words, can I expect the read and write locks associated with the ReentrantReadWriteLock to be requested and held by synchronizing on the ReentrantReadWriteLock? My gut says "no" since any object can be used for synchronization. I wouldn't think that there would be special behavior for ReentrantReadWriteLock. However, special behavior is the corner case of which I may not be aware. Thanks, Todd

If today is before 7/1 then we are in fiscal year that is the current year (so today we are in FY10). If today is after 7/1 our new fiscal year has started and the variable needs to be the next year (so FY11). psuedo code: if today < 7/1/anyyear then BudgetCode = "1" + thisYear(YY) //variable will be 110 else BudgetCode = "1" + nextYear(YY) //variable will be 111 thanks!

  I return empty collections vs. null whenever possible. I switch between two methods for doing so using java.util.Collections: return Collections.EMPTY_LIST; return Collections.emptyList(); where emptyList() is supposed to be type-safe. But I recently discovered: return Collections.<ComplexObject> emptyList(); return Collections.<ComplexObject> singletonList(new ComplexObject()); etc. I see this method in Eclipse Package Explorer: <clinit> () : void but I don't see how this is done in the source code (1.5). How is this magic tomfoolerie happening!!
