  • Architecture for multiple web apps and databases.

    We used to have only one web app, but now we are breaking it down into multiple ones. Each one will be packaged as separate product (web app) Some have things in common some do not. It was originally coded with php and using Postgresql 8.4 and CodeIgniter as the framework. I am looking for some good suggestions on how I should set up multiple web apps. They all have their own somewhat unique data. Some data in the databases can be common to some apps but not all. All the apps will be on one server and will have some kind of API to manipulate data. I want it to be structured such that one User account can access any product they purchase. (kinda like google accounts) I do not know if its a good idea to have multiple database, or just to have one big one. eventually we will be using S3 for some videos and other images. Your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.

  • How to make RegexKitLite w/ iPhone SDK produce a list of all matches +/- and also return surrounding

    I'd like to create a regular expression that will match and return based on the following criteria: 1) I have N search terms entered by a user 2) I have a body of text. 3) I want to return a list of all the occurrences of all the search terms entered by the user plus surrounding context. I think (\w+\W+){,4}(", ")(\W+\w+){,4} might work. 4) I don't know how to use RegexKitLite at all. Do I invoke a RegexKitLite class? or does it interface into NSString somehow?

    I've got a submit button inside my modal, and when it's pressed nothing happens! How do I make my form submit when the push my submit button?     I have the following code: NSMutableDictionary *jsonObj = [parser objectWithString:json_string error:nil]; NSString *test = [[[jsonObj objectForKey:@"questions"] valueForKey:@"owner"] valueForKey:key]; but what I get back is: ( 1a19f089a2bc4ee42bff1c102c6e89b8 ) The actual value is fine, but I get those parenthesis, which show up in my string. How can I get rid of them?

    Back when I was at school, I remember tinkering with a Mac game where you programmed little robots in a sort of pseudo-assembler language which could then battle each other. They could move themselves around the arena, look for opponents in different directions, and fire some sort of weapon. Pretty basic stuff, but I remember it quite fondly, even if I can't remember the name. Are there any good modern day equivalents?

  • Is a clear and replace more efficient than a loop checking all records?

    I have a C# List, that is filled from a database.. So far its only 1400 records, but I expect it to grow a LOT.. Routinely I do a check for new data on the entire list.. What I'm trying to figure out is this, is it faster to simply clear the List and reload all the data from the table, or would checking each record be faster.. Intuition tells me that the dump and load method would be faster, but I thought I should check first...

  • MPMoviePlayerController iPhone 3G & .mov file format

    Just posting a question to the world... My app is currently setup to play video files. The app is setup to play .mov files and when tested on a 3GS, iPhone 4, and an iPad, it works great. But when playing on an iPhone 3G, the file does not play. Is this based on different compression standards that the 3G can't handle? I liked the .mov extension as it was compressed nicely to stream to the device. I have now converted the video files to .m4v so it will play on the 3G, but the file is now 3 times the size. Thanks in advance for any answers I get!!

    I am trying to figure out how to dynamically specify the properties for my select clause in a linq query. Lets say I have a collection of employee objects. At run time, the end user will be specifying which properties they would like to see for those employees, so I need to be able to dynamically construct my Linq select clause. I have used the dynamic Linq library, but I prefer not to use that, because it requires me to build a string to pass to the select method. I'd like to understand how to do this via Expressions.

    I'm trying to be able to dynamically expand / collapse multiple divs with the same code.... it's controlled with the click of a span (toggle) and then i'm trying to get the next id(the div that would slide up and down) $('span').toggle( function() { $('#albumholder').slideToggle(600); $(this).html('-');}, function() { $('#albumholder').slideToggle(600); $(this).html('+');} ); This code works to expand 1 div... but assume i have a divs #downloadholder#linksholderetc...     We all walked out of school with the stars in our eyes and little experience in "real-world" programming. How have your opinions on programming as a craft changed since you've gained more experience away from academia? I've become more and more about design a la McConnell : wide use of encapsulation, quality code that gives you warm fuzzy feelings when you read it, maintainability over execution performance, etc..., whereas many of my co-workers have followed a different path of fewer middlemen layers getting in the way, code that is right out in the open and easier to locate, even if harder to read, and performance-centric designs. What have you learned about the craft of software design which has changed the way you approach coding since leaving the academic world?

  • jqGrid: Is it possible to commit a cell change when tabbing off instead of pressing Enter?

    I have a simple in-line edit in my grid, and I want to commit the change when the user tabs off the textbox. The default behavior of jqGrid forces the user to press 'Enter' to commit the change, but this is non-intuitive for our users. onSelectRow: function(id) { $(gridCoreGroups).editRow(id, true, undefined, function(response) { alert("hello world"); } } I've worked my way through the events provided, but they all happen as a result of the user pressing 'Enter', which I want to avoid. Is there something I can wire up that would trigger an action when the user tabs off this cell?

  • What's the best approach to printing/reporting from WPF?

    I have an upcoming project which will have to be able to print simple reports from its data. It'll be WPF-based, and I'm wondering which way to go. I know that WPF introduces its own printing technology (based on XPS) which looks quite easy to use. However, part of me wonders whether it would just be easier to use the ReportViewer control and embed it in a Windows Forms host control, since that will give users the ability to export to a variety of formats as well as print. Has anyone had any experience with printing/reporting from WPF? Which direction would you recommend?

  • Jquery get array details

    I'm having trouble getting a response back from a Jquery ajax call... (It's a script to authenticate a user, and needs to return their name and user ID. My understanding was that I could encode it as JSON and get the data in the format below. It is returning an error of "undefined" for the alert().     I am trying to remove a file from a dependency jar that I am including in my war file in maven. I am deploying the war to JBoss 5.1 and the jar in question contains a persistence.xml file that I don't want. Here's what is going on: my-webapp.war | `-- WEB-INF | `-- lib | `-- dependency.jar | `-- META-INF | `-- persistence.xml When I am building my war, I want to remove persistence.xml Any one have any idea if this can be done easily?

  • Excluding a specific substring from a regex

    I'm attempting to mangle a SQL query via regex. My goal is essentially grab what is between FROM and ORDER BY, if ORDER BY exists. So, for example for the query: SELECT * FROM TableA WHERE ColumnA=42 ORDER BY ColumnB it should capture TableA WHERE ColumnA=42, and it should also capture if the ORDER BY expression isn't there. The closest I've been able to come is SELECT (.*) FROM (.*)(?=(ORDER BY)) which fails without the ORDER BY. Hopefully I'm missing something obvious. I've been hammering in Expresso for the past hour trying to get this.

    I'm used to doing basic password protection for Apache w/ the following method in Apache config files: AuthType Basic AuthName "By Invitation Only" AuthUserFile /path/to/.htpasswd Require valid-user However, I've been asked to put some protection on a subdirectory of a site running ColdFusion on top of IIS6, and I'm unfamiliar with how to do this. How is this done? What should I look out for? I just need to password protect an administrative subdirectory, so I don't need a full user login system - just something that limits who can access the section of the site.

  • If you stick to standard coding in .NET, is there reason to manually invoke the GC or run finalizers

    If you stick to managed code and standard coding (nothing that does unconventional things withe CLR) in .NET, is there any reason to manually invoke the GC or request to run finalizers on unreferenced objects? The reason I ask is thaty I have an app that grows huge in Working Memory set. I'm wondering if calling System.GC.Collect(); and System.GC.RunFinalizers(); would help, and if it would force anything that wouldn't be done by the CLR normally anyways.

    Hi, this code doesn't compile. I'm wondering what I am doing wrong: private static Importable getRightInstance(String s) throws Exception { Class<Importable> c = Class.forName(s); Importable i = c.newInstance(); return i; } where Importable is an interface and the string s is the name of an implementing class. The compiler says: ./Importer.java:33: incompatible types found : java.lang.Class<capture#964 of ?> required: java.lang.Class<Importable> Class<Importable> c = Class.forName(format(s)); thanks for any help! All the solutions Class<? extends Importable> c = Class.forName(s).asSubclass(Importable.class); and Class<? extends Importable> c = (Class<? extends Importable>) Class.forName(s); and Class<?> c = Class.forName(format(s)); Importable i = (Importable)c.newInstance(); give this error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError: class C1 has interface Importable as super class where C1 is effectively a class implementing Importable, one of those i want to cast to Importable.
