• Computer Vision application(+web interface) for face detection and recognition from database

  My project is a computer vision java application which should implement the following : A web interface through which the form entry+images(for example a student data) will be stored into a database(Mysql) & images into directory common to my java application. Then the data & images can be retrieved from my java Gui application and I can perform the following operations of image processing through OpenCV. Actually,I want to run the face detection on images retrieved and discard the false entries(no proper face). Also the application user/admin can search an image based on text search(By Id) or By another reference image using face recognition. I am well familiar with Java but the problem is that I need a guidance on how to organise it in a stepwise manner(links appreciated).OpenCv,Php and mySql are really messy.I know doing the openCV stuff within java is real overhead but i really want to do it.But If there is any suggestion to do it elseway please guide me.So any kind of help is a ray of hope for me. • Catch database exception in Kohana

  I'm using Kohana 2. I would like to catch a database exception to prevent an error page when no connection to the server can be established. The error displayed is system/libraries/drivers/Database/Mysql.php [61]: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 110 The database server is not reachable at all at this point. I'm doing this from a model. I tried both public function __construct() { // load database library into $this->db try { parent::__construct(); } catch (Exception $e) { die('Database error occured'); } } as well as try { $hoststatus = $this->db->query('SELECT x FROM y WHERE z;'); } catch (Exception $e) { die('Database error occured'); } ...but none of them seemed to work. It seems as if no exception gets passed on from the main model. Is there another way to catch the database error and use my own error handling?

• Open Id XRDS Discovery

  I am working with Open Id, just playing around making a class to interact / auth Open Id's on my site (in PHP). I know there are a few other Libraries (like RPX), but I want to use my own (its good to keep help better understand the protocol and whether its right for me). The question I have relates to the Open Id discovery sequence. Basically I have reached the point where I am looking at using the XRDS doc to get the local identity (openid.identity) from the claimed identity (openid.claimed_id). My question is, do I have to make a cURL request to get the XRDS Location (X-XRDS-location) and then make another cURL request to get the actual XRDS doc?? It seems like with a DUMB request I only make one cURL request and get the Open Id Server, but have to make two to use the XRDS Smart method. Just doesn't seem right, can anyone else give me some info.

• phpDocumentor alternative consuming less memory

  Okay, I'm fed up with phpDocumentator. It consumes way much more memory and time than I'm willing to give it. Does there exist some really compatible program to generate documentation for PHP code? I've tried PHPDoctor, which looks nice, but it has some missing features. I've also tried PhpDocGen, but it just bails out with some Perl errors, which I'm too lazy to study. Doxygen also does not seem to play well with our sources. PS: The documentation would be for phpMyAdmin, a little bit outdated documentation is here.

  hi guys, suppose i have one column in mysql database which is stated last time one equipment is up in h:i:s format (ex: 00:05:11) or 1d21h, means that the equipment is on since 5 min before, what is the best method i can convert this to unix timestamp, say if using php script how? or direct convert last unix timestamp using mysql function query. actually, i want to calculate for start time for this equipment uptime in unix timestamp where i have one column in mysql startcapture that will be deducted with last column to get start time. so starttime = startcapture - last (this last time that has to convert to unix timestamp based on now() - h:i:s ). but the problem is sometimes the format change from h:i:s to ex: 1d22h, if h:i:s means the equipment is up since ex: 00:05:11 min before and if 1d22h means the equipment already up 1 day 22 hours before. so the main things here is to convert last column to appropriate unix timestamp. please help guys, asap.

  I'm looking Specifically for some detailed information on RETSBond Integrator (RI) or something similar. Has anyone used it? Drawbacks? benefits? What I need is something that provides a PHP API out of the box or some kind of RPC exposure. This thing seems to provide an API for batching the MLS server and putting in my own DB which is acceptable although ideally I'd prefer something totally external. Do any MLS services provide that that you are aware of? I realize this is somewhat subjective but I'm looking for a starting point on different services/vendors to research.

  I am using a magic getter/setter class for my session variables, but I don't see any difference between normal setters and getters. The code: class session { public function __set($name, $value) { $_SESSION[$name] = $value; } public function __unset($name) { unset($_SESSION[$name]); } public function __get($name) { if(isset($_SESSION[$name])) { return $_SESSION[$name]; } } } Now the first thing I noticed is that I have to call $session->_unset('var_name') to remove the variable, nothing 'magical' about that. Secondly when I try to use $session->some_var this does not work. I can only get the session variable using $_SESSION['some_var']. I have looked at the PHP manual but the functions look the same as mine. Am I doing something wrong, or is there not really anything magic about these functions.

• Searching documents by tag using the Scribd API is no longer returning expected results.

  Recently I have encountered an issue with Scribd where searching via Scribd API (docs.search) for documents by tag is no longer working. This has been working (for over 6 months) to return a number of documents that I have tagged with "fdsafetyandprevention" (accessible here http://www.scribd.com/tag/fdsafetyandprevention). Just recently my search via the API has stopped working. Note that test searches such as @tags "selfhelp" as described in the Scribd documentation DO work. Could my issue be related to caching or the age of my documents and Scribd choosing to not return them in search results? I have been using scribd.php (http://www.scribd.com/developers/libraries) to interface with the API using $scribd-search(@tags "fdsafetyandprevention", 20, 0, "all"). • How do you get the glyph for a character encoded as '&#333;' from a utf-8 encoded database field usi

  I have a MySQL database table with a collation of 'utf8_general_ci' and the value in the field is: x & #299; bán yá wén (without the spaces). When this is converted (for example by StackOverflow's editor) it looks like this: xī bán yá wén where the second character looks like a lower case i with a bar over the top. In PHP, what function converts the & #299 ; entity into the ī character? I've tried using html_entity_decode($str,ENT_COMPAT,'UTF-8'), however I get characters like the following: yÄ«n wén or zhÅ•ng wén I'm pretty sure there's something I don't understand about the decoding, which is why I'm using the wrong function. Can anyone shed some light on how to get the single character glyph that's represented by the entity & #299 and similar high-number characters above 255? Many thanks, AE

• Firefox Upload Form Issue

  Ive created an uplaod script in php that takes a file, resizes it, and creates a cropped square thumbnail. The script itself seems to work fine. However, when i tried to upload an image through firefox, on clicking the submit button the browser shows the loading animation, but it never calls the script, it just stays on the current page. If dont upload an image, then the script can be found and is run. I tried in safari, and i dont get the same problem, i can upload an image from the form, it will process it and take me the correct page. Ive tired just calling a basic script from the form, it just prints out the $_POST and $_FILES, and i get the same result, if an image is present, it wont get to the script, if no image is present, it runs fine. Im just wondering if anyone has any idea whats going on?

(If i use select Fruit FROM table WHERE Color = red OR Color = green i get 1 row which is not what i need) I am using PHP with form where user checks different checkboxes that represent different values of the same column.   Say I have this line of code in the view. <?php echo CHtml::activeTextField($model,'start_time'); ?> start_time is a UNIX timestamp. When just displaying it in a view I can apply functions like date() on it. Where should I apply the formatting when I'm displaying it in a form, by using the above line of code? (This case of timestamps/dates might be special, but I'm also interested in how would one go about if it wasn't a date and I just want to work with "value in database" < "different representations of the value in different views.   I've started developing a forum application in PHP on my MVC Framework and I've got to the stage where I assign permissions to members (for example: READ, WRITE, UPDATE, DELETE). Now, I know I can add 5 columns under the user table in my database and set them to 1 | 0, but that to me seems like too much if I want to add other rules, like MOVE for example. And how can I dynamically assign these privileges them to users individually? I've heard of using a bitmasks, but it would be really good if I could fully understand them before I continue. Do you have an example of how I might implement this?

Currently I've put this in my index.php: Zend_Registry::set('db', $application->bootstrap()->getBootstrap() ->getPluginResource('db')->getDbAdapter()); And then $db = Zend_Registry::get('db'); in each of my model classes that require the database. But this seems like a horrible horrible hack. Am I missing something basic here?

What do you suggest? What markup language in the first place? BBCode? Wiki? Markdown? Are there any complete API-s with good examples? PHP is available on the server side. If there is a WYSIWYG-like texarea in addition (like here on SO) that would be a fantastic bonus!
