  • Are shorter URLS better for SEO?

    - by articlestack
Many people shorten their URLs. But as per my understanding it creates overhead of extra redirection, other can not guess about the target article with their url, and it should be less friendly for "inurl:..." type search. Should I shorten the URLs of my sites? Is there any advantage with short URLs besides the fact that they take fewer characters in anchor tags on the page (good for site loading)?

  • Is it possible to use canonical tag in Blogger posts?

    - by John Sanjay
I found one of my blog post was cached by Google (www.example.com/post.html). I found that comment page of the post was also cached (www.example.com/post.html?showComment=1372054729698). These two pages are showing in Google SERP when I checked cached posts of my blog. Is it possible to use canonical tag on the post www.example.com/post.html?showComment=1372054729698 so that Google won't penalize my original post? Is there any other ways to redirect a blog post?

  • Configure xfce4-screenshooter settings

    - by rubo77
xfce4-screenshooter is the standard screenshot program in XFCE on Xubuntu. How can I configure the settings about which format it saves the screenshot in and in which folder? I noticed, that my settings I made in shutter also affect the settings of xfce4-screenshooter (but not all). EDIT: The man page sais, there is an -o option to open it with an external program. How can I make this default? Then I could set there an external program, that automatically compresses the screenshot to an emailable size

  • OpenSearchDescriptions good or bad signal in Google's eyes?

    - by JeremyB
I noticed a site using this tag: <link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" title="XXXXXXXXX" href="http://www.XXXXXXXXXX.com/api/opensearch" /> As I understand it (based on http://www.opensearch.org/Home), this tag is a way of describing search results (so you use it on pages which contain search results) to make it easier for other search engines to understand and use your results. Given that Matt Cutts has said Google generally frowns on "search results within search results" is using this tag a bad idea on a page that you hope to achieve a good ranking in Google?

  • REST API at backend and MVC Javascript framework at client side

    - by Prashere
I am building an online social network. I have finished writing RESTful API service using Django. This will return only JSON response (No HTML will be generated from server side) so that this JSON response can be used to build native smartphone apps. API service being common to all clients. My question is, since there is no HTML response from server side, can the MV* Javascript Frameworks like Angular / Backbone / Ember take care of complete Front-end, right from generating HTML page with CSS?

  • Social media measurement tools [on hold]

    - by user29187
I work for a non-profit and we are currently trying to develop a system to measure and evaluate our social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter). We would liek to tarck a variety of social metrics, including, but not limited to: Twitter: # of followers, # of mentions, # of retweets Facebook: # of likes, # people talking about, # of page views We are currently using a paid platform for this. I wondered if there is a way to configure Google Analytics to do this or if there are any other free/clever or smart ways to track social engagement with our brand?

  • yahoo media player not working.

    - by luca590
I have a yahoo media player embedded in my webpage. I am currently using Ruby on Rails to create/edit my web page. When i click the play button next to a track the YMP waits a while and then goes to the next track without playing the first one. I then get a warning on my second (last) track that its file could not be found. Does anyone has a better recommendation for an audio player or a way to fix this one?

  • SQL SERVER – ERROR: FIX using Compatibility Level – Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner – Part 2

    - by pinaldave
Earlier I wrote a blog post about how to resolve the error with database diagram. Today I faced the same error when I was dealing with a database which is upgraded from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2. When I was searching for the solution online I ended up on my own earlier solution SQL SERVER – ERROR: FIX – Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. I really found it interesting that I ended up on my own solution. However, the solution to the problem this time was a bit different. Let us see how we can resolve the same. Error: Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects. Workaround / Fix / Solution : Follow the steps listed below and it should for sure solve your problem. (NOTE: Please try this for the databases upgraded from previous version. For everybody else you should just follow the steps mentioned here.) Select your database >> Right Click >> Select Properties Go to the Options In the Dropdown at right labeled “Compatibility Level” choose “SQL Server 2005(90)” Select FILE in left side of page In the OWNER box, select button which has three dots (…) in it Now select user ‘sa’ or NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and click OK. This will solve your problem. However, there is one very important note you must consider. When you change any database owner, there are always security related implications. I suggest you check your security policies before changing authorization. I did this to quickly solve my problem on my development server. If you are on production server, you may open yourself to potential security compromise. • Configuring Full-Text Search for pdf and docx files

    - by Lukasz Kurylo
I think in may I was creating a little filters module based on Full Text-Search. I have configured my dev machine, the same for two testing servers – in our company for internal testing before we deployed it to client, and then on the testing client server. Until last week this build  was still on the testing server and finally we got feedback that we can deploy it on the production one. I only say that, I lost half a day because I had not correctly remembered what I was doing to configure the FTS on the previous servers and I had no notes for that. I foolishly believed in my memory. Lesson learned.   For future reference a bunch of steps to configure the FTS for searching in *.pdf and *.docx files (and by the way in other Office files like *.xlsx).   1. From the page (link) download and install the *.pdf IFilter for FTS. 2. To the PATH global system variable add path to the catalog, where you installed the plugin. Default for this version is: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\bin 3. From the page (link) download a FilterPackx64.exe and install it. 4. Now from SSMS execute the following procedures: -sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources',1 -sp_fulltext_service 'verify_signature', 0 5. Restart the server 6. Now we must check if the plugins are visible: -select document_type, path from sys.fulltext_document_types where document_type = '.pdf' -select document_type, path from sys.fulltext_document_types where document_type = '.docx' 7. If we see a result, then we can assume that everything is ok*. 8. Right now we can create a catalog for FTS and indexes on appropriate columns.     *I lost a lot of hours to find out, why the plugin for the *.pdf files wasn’t indexed any file in the database, but in the sys.fulltext_document_types table there was available a line for this plugin. After the deeper investigation I found that the *.pdf files actually were indexed. At least the EOF sign was added to the indexes and nothing more for each file. In the end the problem was that, I forgot to add the /bin in the path to the plugin in PATH variable..

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services: A generic error occurred in GDI+

    - by Greg Low
While building some maps today in SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services, I kept coming up with an error that said: A generic error occurred in GDI+ I was struggling to think what I'd done wrong. After much nashing of teeth and removal of hair, I finally worked out what the error was. When I got to the "Choose Color Scheme and Visualization" page of the map wizard for building a color analytical map, I hadn't picked the correct value for the "Field to Visualize" drop-down. I'm guessing that because...(read more)

  • What browser do you build in? [closed]

    - by Ryan
Lately I have been using Chrome, but I am starting to think I should use FF. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various mainstream browsers (with an emphasis on Chrome and FF) when doing web development? Is it easier to start with clean code for a relatively conforming browser, and later add hacks/workarounds for acceptable display with less conforming browsers, or is it easier to work with a variety of browsers from the beginning, so we never have a page that's completely unacceptable with, for example, IE 6?
