  • FileInputStream negative skip

    I'm trying to find more about history of FileInputStream.skip(negative) operation. According to InputStream documentation: If n is negative, no bytes are skipped. It seems that implementation of FileInputStream from Sun used to throw IOException instead, which is now also documented in Javadoc: If n is negative, an IOException is thrown, even though the skip method of the InputStream superclass does nothing in this case. I just tried that, and found that FileInputStream.skip(-10) did in fact return -10! It didn't threw exception, it didn't even return 0, it returned -10. (I've tried with Java 1.5.0_22 from Sun, and Java 1.6.0_18 from Sun). Is this a known bug? Why hasn't it been fixed, or why documentation is kept the way it is? Can someone point me to some discussion about this issue? I can't find anything.

    I am looking to improve front-end performance of my application, so I used YSlow tool in Firefox. When I ran this tool for my app, in the YSlow grade tab it showed up a issue 'Grade F on Compress components with gzip'. Seems to be that we need to compress the files(js, css) while sending from the server to client to increase the server response time. My app is a Struts Java application. Can anyone let me know how to compress and send the front end UI files(JS,CSS) from server so that the response time increases and my pages lot fastly? What are the things that I need to do to compress these files in Java at server?

    I am trying to run a jar with the log4j.xml file on the file system outside the jar like so: java -jar MyJarName.jar -cp=/opt/companyName/pathToJar/ log4j.configuration=log4j.xml argToJar1 argToJar2 I have also tried: java -jar MyJarName.jar -cp=/opt/companyName/pathToJar/ log4j.configuration=/opt/companyName/pathToJar/log4j.xml argToJar1 argToJar2 The log4j.xml is file is in the same directory as the jar (/opt/companyName/pathToJar/), yet I still get the standard warning message: log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger (org.apache.axis.i18n.ProjectResourceBundle). log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly. Is it possible to have the config file outside the jar, or do I have to package it with the jar? TIA

  • What frameworks to use to bootstrap my first production scala project ?

    I am making my first foray into scala for a production app. The app is currently packaged as a war file. My plan is to create a jar file of the scala compiled artifacts and add that into the lib folder for the war file. My enhancement is a mysql-backed app exposed via Jersey & will be integrated with a 3rd party site via HttpClient invocations. I know how to do this via plain java. But when doing it in scala, there are several decision points that I am pussyfooting on. scala 2.7.7 or 2.8 RC ? JDBC via querulous Is this API ready for production ? sbt vs maven. I am comfortable with maven. Is there a scala idiomatic wrapper for HttpClient (or should I use it just like in java) ? I'd love to hear your comments and experiences on starting out with scala.     As my understanding on setting hibernate, I need to create table meta data file (person.hbm.xml), include all the fields mapping java object (person.java) If we use stored procedures for all transaction, do we still need the above configuration? It seems hibernate and stored procedures will overlap, We set up the stored procedure because we don't want the to developer know all the field in db. If tables change, then we need update above files. Does it mean if we purely use stored procedure, we should just go for JDBC? If hibernate, we should stay in HQL?

    I am looking for something like a Queue that would allow me to put elements at the end of the queue and pop them out in the beggining, like a regular Queue does. The difference would be that I also need to compact the Queue from time to time. This is, let's assume I have the following items on my Queue (each character, including the dot, is an item in the Queue): e d . c . b . a (this Queue has 8 items) Then, I'd need for example to remove the last dot, so to get: e d . c . b a Is there anything like that in the Java Collection classes? I need to use this for a program I am doing where I can't use anything but Java's classes. I am not allowed to design one for myself.   • Trying to configure HWIC-3G-HSPA

    I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks

So far now I've been following this excelente tutorial http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2SE/jax_ws_2/ it all goes well, I have my web service working from the command line with it's embeded server, and then, with the help of netbeans I deployed it on tomcat. I'd like to know the steps to manually deploy it on tomcat, in order to learn how it's done, and because I don't like depending on an ide. I mean, I'd like to know how everything could be done from the command line and a text editor. I've also found this link that explains how to manually deploy a servlet to tomcat, http://linux-sxs.org/internet_serving/c292.html but I couldn't find any article telling how to deploy a web service... thanks a lot saludos sas

    I'm building a little app using Java and Swing in NetBeans. Using NetBeans design window, I created a JFrame with a JPanel inside. Now I want to dynamically add some jTextFields to the JPanel. I wrote something like that: Vector textFieldsVector = new Vector(); JTextField tf; int i = 0; while (i < 3) { tf = new JTextField(); textFieldVector.add(tf); myPanel.add(tf); //myPanel is the JPanel where I want to put the JTextFields i++; } myPanel.validate(); myPanel.repaint(); But nothing happens: when I run the app, the JFrame shows with the JPanel inside, but the JTextFields don't. I'm a total newbie in writing graphical Java apps, so I'm surely missing something very simple, but I can't see what.

    Hi all, I need to both parse incoming messages and generate outgoing messages in EDIFACT format (basically a structured delimited format). I would like to have a Java model that will be generated by parsing a message. Then I would like to use the same model to create an instance and generate a message. The first half is fine, I've used ANTLR before to go from raw - Java objects. But I've never done the reverse, or if I have it's been custom. Does ANTLR support generating using a grammar or is it really just a parse-only tool?

    I am trying to secure my Flex application within my Java web application. Currently my Java web application, handles logging and managing user accounts and the like. I was wondering if there is a way to essentially share that user credentials with the Flash movie in a secure mechanism? For instance, if you log in, we want you to be able to save items in the Flex application for that user, only if that user is logged in of course. Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Im pretty new to Java Web Services, but I cant find a good explanation anywhere. I have 2 Java web projects within NetBeans. One as a web service and one as a client for that web service. I have also created my own class called "Person", which has what you'd expect: name, dob, etc. I would like to have a web service method called "ListPeople()" that would return an array of "Person" objects. Do I need to have that class in both projects? Should I be serializing the object first? Should I be using JAXB, if so, where do I start? Sorry for the n00b questions, but im confused.     If I specify a system property multiple times when invoking the JVM which value will I actually get when I retrieve the property? e.g. java -Dprop=A -Dprop=B -jar my.jar What will be the result when I call System.getProperty("prop");? The Java documentation on this does not really tell me anything useful on this front. In my non-scientific testing on a couple of machines running different JVMs it seems like the last value is the one returned (which is actually the behavior I need) but I wondered if this behavior is actually defined officially anywhere or can it vary between JVMs?
