Now i would like the user to have a profile description, signature, location (optional) and maybe other things. Should i have this in a separate mysql table? or should i share the table? and why?

  • A more elegant way to parse a string with ruby regular expression using variable grouping?

    At the moment I have a regular expression that looks like this: ^(cat|dog|bird){1}(cat|dog|bird)?(cat|dog|bird)?$ It matches at least 1, and at most 3 instances of a long list of words and makes the matching words for each group available via the corresponding variable. Is there a way to revise this so that I can return the result for each word in the string without specifying the number of groups beforehand? ^(cat|dog|bird)+$ works but only returns the last match separately , because there is only one group.

  • Can MySQL reasonably perform queries on billions of rows?

    I am planning on storing scans from a mass spectrometer in a MySQL database and would like to know whether storing and analyzing this amount of data is remotely feasible. I know performance varies wildly depending on the environment, but I'm looking for the rough order of magnitude: will queries take 5 days or 5 milliseconds? Input format Each input file contains a single run of the spectrometer; each run is comprised of a set of scans, and each scan has an ordered array of datapoints. There is a bit of metadata, but the majority of the file is comprised of arrays 32- or 64-bit ints or floats. Proposed schema I'm planning on doing things "right" (i.e. normalizing the data like crazy) and so would have a runs table, a spectra table with a foreign key to runs, and a datapoints table with a foreign key to spectra. The 200 Billion datapoint question I am going to be analyzing across multiple spectra and possibly even multiple runs, resulting in queries which could touch millions of rows. Assuming I index everything properly (which is a topic for another question) and am not trying to shuffle hundreds of MiB across the network, is it remotely plausible for MySQL to handle this? UPDATE: additional info The scan data will be coming from files in the XML-based mzML format. The meat of this format is in the <binaryDataArrayList> elements where the data is stored. Each scan produces = 2 <binaryDataArray> elements which, taken together, form a 2-dimensional (or more) array of the form [[123.456, 234.567, ...], ...]. These data are write-once, so update performance and transaction safety are not concerns.   • Does Table.InsertOnSubmit create a copy of the original table?

    Using InsertOnSubmit seems to have some memory overhead. I have a System.Data.Linq.Table<User> table. When I do table.InsertOnSubmit(user) and then int count = table.Count(), the memory usage of my application increases by roughly the size of the User table, but the count is the number of items before user was inserted. So I'm guess an enumeration after InsertOnSubmit will create a copy of the table. Is that true?

  • How to check WCF generated client is compatible with service at runtime

    I realise that WCF and services in general are meant to be loosely coupled. But I have a requirement that my client app can check whether an given WCF endpoint contains a service that matches its generated client code. In other words I need to check for a compatible service. Obviously I could have a method that returns a manually maintained version number, but I would prefer not to have to write my own meta data system if WCF can do something out of the box.

  • Attach labels to items in TFS from the PowerBuilder IDE?

    We do this using the 'Advanced' button on the checkin dialog now (with Merant, nee PVCS) but the 'Advanced' button is disabled when I set TFS as my SCC provider. Is there a switch we can flip on either side to enable this? Or do we need to write some custom extension? Or can I get the TFS changeset number to associate with the change in PB? Or am I coming at doing selective builds entirely the wrong way?

  • Does the java JFC hash table use seperate chaining resolution? Can I traverse each list in the table

    I have written a program to store a bunch of strings in a JFC hash table. There are defiantly collisions going on, but I don't really know how it is handling them. My ultimate goal is to print the number of occurrences of each string in the table, and traversing the bucket or list would work nicely. Or maybe counting the collisions? Or do you have another idea of how I could get a count of the elements?

    Hi, I have a sortable list like this one: http://jqueryui.com/demos/sortable Is it possible to get the start and end position of the element in the list, when it has been moved? I'm talking about their position number, in the list. For example, if I move element 2 to position 5 in the list, I'd like to assign those two numbers to variables.
