• Multiple elements with the same name with SimpleXML and Java

  I'm trying to use SimpleXML to parse an XML document (an ItemLookupResponse for a book from the Amazon Product Advertising API) which contains the following element: <ItemAttributes> <Author>Shane Conder</Author> <Author>Lauren Darcey</Author> <Manufacturer>Pearson Educacion</Manufacturer> <ProductGroup>Book</ProductGroup> <Title>Android Wireless Application Development: Barnes & Noble Special Edition</Title> </ItemAttributes> My problem is that I don't know how to deal with the multiple possible Author elements. Here's what I have right now for the corresponding POJO (Plain Old Java Object), keeping in mind that it's not handling the case of multiple Authors: @Element public class ItemAttributes { @Element public String Author; @Element public String Manufacturer; @Element public String Title; } (I don't care about the ProductGroup, so it's not in the class -- I'm just setting SimpleXML's strict mode to off to allow for that.) I couldn't find an example in the documentation that corresponded with such a case. Using an ElementList with (inline=true) seemed along the right lines, but I didn't see how to do it for String (as opposed to a separate Author class, which I have no need for and don't see how it would even work). Here's a similar question and answer, but for PHP: php - simpleXML how to access a specific element with the same name as others? I don't know what the Java equivalent would be to the accepted answer. Thanks in advance.

• Can't seem to sign AWS Cloud Front URL properly

  Hi everybody, I found a lot of detailed examples online on how to sign an Amazon CloudFront URL for private content. Unfortunately, whenever I implement these examples my URL doesn't seem to work. The resource path is correct because I can download the file when it is set for world read, but the URL doesn't work when set just for authorized users. The PHP code I am using is below. • API-based solutions for sending payments to people without bank accounts

  I'm looking for inexpensive ways to send payments to hundreds or thousands of individual contractors, even if they do not have a bank account. Currently I only need to support payment in the USA, but may eventually be international. Here's the scenario: I offer a service that allows an organization or manager-type person to coordinate contractors for very short term jobs. These jobs are typically only an hour or two in length. A contractor may get only one job over an entire month, several jobs spread out over a month, multiple jobs on a single day, or any other combination. Thus, a single contractor could earn as little as one job's payment up to potentially payment for dozens. Payment for a month could be as little as $10 up to $1000's. Right now, the system provides payroll reports to the manager and it is the manager's responsibility to produce checks, stuff envelopes, and send mail via the US postal service. I'd like to remove this burden from the manager and have all the payments taken care of for them automatically by the system. I'm not sure where to start or what the best options would be. I'm starting to look into the following solutions, but don't know specifics yet and would like some advice before pursuing them. I'd also like to hear about other ideas or suggestions. PayPal (Send Money, Adaptive Payments, x.com, other???) Amazon (Flexible Payments System?) Fund some sort of pre-paid debit card? Web service with API that mails checks for you? Direct deposit via a bank API (for users with bank accounts)? The problem is that many of these contractors may not be able to obtain bank accounts or credit cards within the USA. I don't mind doing a hybrid of solutions, but are there any that would work well with this issue? I want the solution to be easy to use for the contractors, meaning that they can get the money easily (via check in the mail, debit card ATM withdrawal, etc.)

• How can I lookup data about a book from its barcode number?

  I'm building the world's simplest library application. All I want to be able to do is scan in a book's UPC (barcode) using a typical scanner (which just types the numbers of the barcode into a field) and then use it to look up data about the book... at a minimum, title, author, year published, and either the Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress catalog number. The goal is to print out a tiny sticker ("spine label") with the card catalog number that I can stick on the spine of the book, and then I can sort the books by card catalog number on the shelves in our company library. That way books on similar subjects will tend to be near each other, for example, if you know you're looking for a book about accounting, all you have to do is find SOME book about accounting and you'll see the other half dozen that we have right next to it which makes it convenient to browse the library. There seem to be lots of web APIs to do this, including Amazon and the Library of Congress. But those are all extremely confusing to me. What I really just want is a single higher level function that takes a UPC barcode number and returns some basic data about the book.

• S3 browser upload via POST: unable to handle errors gracefully

  I am writing an app where I want the customer to be able to upload to Amazon S3 straight from the browser. I can make this work just fine. But when errors occur, I want to handle them more gracefully than splattering an XML document on the customer's screen. I have a scheme that I think would work, but it's failing. Here's what I'm trying: Create a form to do the upload, and store the form on S3 itself, in the same domain as the "action" attribute of the form. Redirect the customer to this form. Now their browser is sitting on https://<bucket>.s3.amazonaws.com/something. The page contains a hidden iframe. The form sets its target to the iframe. The load event handler looks at the contents of the iframe, and acts upon it. So, something like this: <iframe id="foo" name="foo" style="display: none" /> <form target="foo" action="https://<bucket>.s3.amazonaws.com/"> <input type="hidden" name="..." value="..." /> <input type="file" name="file" /> </form> with this javascript (using jquery): function handler() { var message = $("#foo").contents().find('message').text(); alert(message); } $("#foo").load(handler); Using firebug, I can see that the iframe contains an XML document, that contains a "message" node. However, the .find('message') always fails to find anything within the XML document. Notice that the action of the form has the same domain, port, and scheme as the document itself. So, I don't think that I should be running afoul of the same-origin policy. Right? But it fails every time. This is using Firefox and Google Chrome browsers. Thanks for any advice!

  We recently had an issues where I had rebooted our EC2 instance (Ubuntu x86_64, version 9.10 server) and due to an EC2 issue the instance needed to be stopped and was down for a few days. Now I have been able to bring the instance back online I cannot connect to SSH using the keypair which previously worked. Unfortunately SSH is the only way to get into this server, and while I have another system running in its place there are a number of things I would like to try and retrieve from the machine. • PHP resized image functions and S3 upload functions - but how to merge the two?

  I am using S3 to store images and I am resizing and compressing images before it gets uploaded using PHP. I'm using this class for storing the images to an S3 bucket - http://undesigned.org.za/2007/10/22/amazon-s3-php-class This all works fine if I'm not doing any file processing before the file is uploaded because it reads the file upload from the $_FILES array. The problem is I am resizing and compressing the image before storing to the S3 bucket. So I'm no longer able to read from the $_FILES array. • EMERGENCY - Major Problems After Perl Module Installed via WHM

  I attempted to install the perl module Net::Twitter::Role::API::Lists using WHM and after doing so my whole site came down. It seems that something that was updated with the install isn't functioning correctly and since our website it written in Perl none of our site scripts will run. In almost 8 years of working with Perl I've never had any issues arise after installing a perl module so I have no idea how to even start troubleshooting.   Hi, I'm working on a little research project, currently running as an instance on ec2, and I'm hoping to figure out whether I'm going down the right path. We, like a thousand other people, are making use of some of twitters streaming feeds to do gather some data to have fun with and my db seems to be having problems keeping up, and queries take what seems to be a very long time. I'm not a DBA by trade, so I'll just dump some info here and add more if need be. System specs: ec2 xl, 15 gigs of ram ebs: 4 100 gb drives, raid 0. The stream we're getting we're looking at around 10k inserts per minute. 3 main tables, with the users we're tracking somewhere in the neighborhood of 26M rows currently. Is this amount of inserts on this hardware too much to ask out of ebs? Should take a look at some things with less overhead like mongodb?

  Hello, I have an Ubuntu Server running on an EC2 instance. To login to that server I use a certificate file without any password. I've installed and configured vsftpd and created a user (let's call him "testuser") for which I've set a /bin/false ssh terminal so it will only be able to connect via sftp and upload/access files on his home directory. However - when I try to connect to the server from my computer, running sftp testuser@my-ec2-server I get Permission denied (publickey). Connection closed messages so I can't log in. How can I remove the certificate requirement for this user only (meaning, the "ubuntu" user will still have to use the certificate file to login via ssh), so normal sftp clients will be able to connect using a username and a password ? Thank you. PS Using Ubuntu Server 10.10 official AMI from canonical, 64bit on a micro instance.

  I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it?

A 111.111.111.111 60 1 id1 test.com. A 111.111.111.222 60 1 id2 I want to delete 111.111.111.222 and the record set. So, what is the proper way to delete a record set? For a record set, I will have multiple values that are distinguished by a unique identifier. When an ip address becomes in active I want to remove from route53. I am using a a poor mans load balancing.   We have deployed a java webapplication in Elastic Beanstalk with the minimum instance count 1 and max instance count 2 for Autoscaling. The custom AMI we are using is c1.medium with Sun JDK 6. The environment status changed to yellow and then red. After checking into the log file from the snapshot logs we found a exception - Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. Assuming this could be one of the possible reason for the Environment failure. The settings that we have configured in the Environment Container option are Initial JVM Heap Size (MB) - 256M Maximum JVM Heap Size (MB) - 512m The maximum heap size the java virtual machine will ever consume, specified on the JVM launch command line using -Xmx. Maximum JVM Permanent Generation Size (MB) - 512m Should i increase the Heap size from 512m to more or is it fine.

Mind you, I have little background in either language. A similar project has been done in C++ and the code is available to me. So my question: is this extra functionality available through AWS or is it only relevant if you have more control over the cloud? Is there anything else I should bear in mind in order to make a decision, like availability of plugins for hadoop that work better with one language or the other? Thanks in advance

  I'm just starting to use the jets3t API for S3, using version 0.7.2 I can't seem to save metadata with the S3Objects I'm creating. What am I doing wrong? The object is successfully saved when I putObject, but I don't see the metadata after I get the object. • Rails upload to s3 performance issue

  Hello, I'm building an app to store files on my s3 account. I use Rails 3.0.0beta A lot of files can be uploaded at the same time, and the cost (from a performance point of view) of an upload is quite heavy, my app will be busy handling uploads all the time! Maybe a solution is to upload directly to s3, but I still need a submit to my app, at least to store the file's name. I'm wondering what is the best solution?

• Securing S3 via your own application

  Imagine the following use case: You have a basecamp style application hosting files with S3. Accounts all have their own files, but stored on S3. How, therefore, would a developer go about securing files so users of account 1, couldn't somehow get to files of account 2? We're talking Rails if that's a help.
