  • Realistic Jumping

    - by Seth Taddiken
    I want to make the jumping that my character does more realistic. This is what I've tried so far but it doesn't seem very realistic when the player jumps. I want it to jump up at a certain speed then slow down as it gets to the top then eventually stopping (for about one frame) and then slowly going back down but going faster and faster as it goes back down. I've been trying to make the speed at which the player jumps up slow down by one each frame then become negative and go down faster... but it doesn't work very well public bool isPlayerDown = true; public bool maxJumpLimit = false; public bool gravityReality = false; public bool leftWall = false; public bool rightWall = false; public float x = 76f; public float y = 405f; if (Keyboard.GetState().IsKeyDown(up) && this.isPlayerDown == true && this.y <= 405f) { this.isPlayerDown = false; } if (this.isPlayerDown == false && this.maxJumpLimit == false) { this.y = this.y - 6; } if (this.y <= 200) { this.maxJumpLimit = true; } if (this.isPlayerDown == true) { this.y = 405f; this.isPlayerDown = true; this.maxJumpLimit = false; } if (this.gravityReality == true) { this.y = this.y + 2f; this.gravityReality = false; } if (this.maxJumpLimit == true) { this.y = this.y + 2f; this.gravityReality = true; } if (this.y > 405f) { this.isPlayerDown = true; }

  • LibGdx, Texture an Object

    - by Gigi10012
    I want to set texture to an Object, this is my playerobject class: private boolean up; private float speed; private float fallacceleration = 20; private float acceleration = 15; private float maxSpeed = 300; SpriteBatch batch; public Player() { x = MyGdxGame.WIDTH - 9*MyGdxGame.WIDTH/10; y = MyGdxGame.HEIGHT - 3 * MyGdxGame.HEIGHT/10; shapex = new float[4]; shapey = new float[4]; radians = 2*MathUtils.PI; batch = new SpriteBatch(); } private void setShape() { //Simple Arrow Shape ...... } public void update(float dt) { setShape(); } public void draw(ShapeRenderer sr) { sr.setColor(0F, 0F, 0F, 1F); sr.begin(ShapeType.Line); //Drawing Shape .............. sr.end(); } What I have to do to add texture to that object? (I'm using LibGdx)

  • Box2Dweb very slow on node.js

    - by Peteris
    I'm using Box2Dweb on node.js. I have a rotated box object that I apply an impulse to move around. The timestep is set at 50ms, however, it bumps up to 100ms and even 200ms as soon as I add any more edges or boxes. Here are the edges I would like to use as bounds around the playing area: // Computing the corners var upLeft = new b2Vec2(0, 0), lowLeft = new b2Vec2(0, height), lowRight = new b2Vec2(width, height), upRight = new b2Vec2(width, 0) // Edges bounding the visible game area var edgeFixDef = new b2FixtureDef edgeFixDef.friction = 0.5 edgeFixDef.restitution = 0.2 edgeFixDef.shape = new b2PolygonShape var edgeBodyDef = new b2BodyDef; edgeBodyDef.type = b2Body.b2_staticBody edgeFixDef.shape.SetAsEdge(upLeft, lowLeft) world.CreateBody(edgeBodyDef).CreateFixture(edgeFixDef) edgeFixDef.shape.SetAsEdge(lowLeft, lowRight) world.CreateBody(edgeBodyDef).CreateFixture(edgeFixDef) edgeFixDef.shape.SetAsEdge(lowRight, upRight) world.CreateBody(edgeBodyDef).CreateFixture(edgeFixDef) edgeFixDef.shape.SetAsEdge(upRight, upLeft) world.CreateBody(edgeBodyDef).CreateFixture(edgeFixDef) Can box2d really become this slow for even two bodies or is there some pitfall? It would be very surprising given all the demos which successfully use tens of objects.

  • How to get distance from point to line with distinction between side of line?

    - by tesselode
    I'm making a 2d racing game. I'm taking the nice standard approach of having a set of points defining the center of the track and detecting whether the car is off the track by detecting its distance from the nearest point. The nicest way I've found of doing this is using the formula: d = |Am + Bn + C| / sqrt(A^2 + B^2) Unfortunately, to have proper collision resolution, I need to know which side of the line the car is hitting, but I can't do that with this formula because it only returns positive numbers. So my question is: is there a formula that will give me positive or negative numbers based on which side of the line the point is on? Can I just get rid of the absolute value in the formula or do I need to do something else?

  • OpenGL Lighting

    - by gopgop
    I have a simple day and night cycle by at day disabling OpenGL lighting and at night enabling openGL Lighting. When I enable everything appears darker. My question is How would I make it that at a specific spot there would be a light that will only light up its surrounding area for example: http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/276/1414275-light_large.png Where the light is is where I want to position my light. My application is in 2D.

  • Rotation, further I go from 0:0, the further the object positions around the origin while rotating

    - by Serguei Fedorov
    For some reason I am having the issue where the following code: global.spriteBatch.Draw(obj.sprite, obj.getPosition(), null, Color.White, obj.rotation, obj.center, 2f, SpriteEffects.None, 1); causes the object to rotate around the origin in such a way, as though there is an offset to the position relative to its location. The calculation for the center it correct and this happens even if I set the pivot to be the location of the object. The further I get from 0:0 the larger the radius or rotation. I am not sure what is going on here because given the following tutorial http://www.riemers.net/eng/Tutorials/XNA/Csharp/Series2D/Rotation.php I have done the code setup correctly. Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

  • Android loading screens blocking, good practice?

    - by Oren
    I've noticed many (if not all) android games don't support the "back" button functionality during their loading screens. Which leads to some frustrating moments when a user accidentally starts up the game and has to wait for the long loading stage to end in order to close it. So my questions are: 1) Why is that ? Is there a good reason to avoid something like asynchronous loading (or some other solution to this problem) in android games ? 2) If there is no good reason not to support this functionality, what would be the best way to accomplish it ?

  • Model a chain with different elements in Unity 3D

    - by Alex
    I have to model, in unity 3D, a chain that is composed of various elements. some flexible, some rigid. The idea is to realize a human-chain where each person is linked to the other by their hands. I've not tried to implement it yet as i've no idea on what could be a good way to do it. In the game i've to manage a lot of chains of people... maybe also 100 chains composed of 11-15 people. The chain will be pretty simple and there won't be much interaction... Probabily some animation of the people one at time for each chain and some physic reaction (for example pushing a people in a chain should slightle flex the chain) the very problem of this work is that in the chain each object is composed by flexible parts (arms) and rigid parts (the body) and that the connection should remain firm... just like when people handshake... hands are firm and are the wrists to move. i can use C4D to model the meshes. i know this number may cause performance problems, but it's also true i will use low-poly versions of human. (for the real it won't be human, but very simple toonish characters that have harms and legs). So actually i'm trying to find a way to manage this in a way it can work, the performance will be a later problem that i can solve. If there is not a fast 'best-practiced' solution and you have any link/guide/doc that could help me in finding a way to realize this is, it would be very appreciated anyway if you post it. thanks

  • Whole continent simulation [on hold]

    - by user2309021
    Let's suppose I am planning to create a simulation of an entire continent at some point in the past (let's say, around 0 A.D). Is it feasible to spawn a hundred million actors that interact with each other and their environments? Having them reproduce, extract resources, etc? The fact is that I actually want to create a simulation that allows me to zoom in from a view of the entire continent up to a single village, and interact with it. (Think as if you could keep zooming in the campaign map of any Total War game and the transition to the battle map was seamless, not a change of the "game mode"). By the way, I have never made a game in my entire life (I have programmed normal desktop applications, though), so I am really having trouble wrapping my head around how to implement such a thing. Even while thinking about how to implement a simple population simulator, without a graphical interface, I think that the O(n) complexity of traversing an array and telling all people to get one year older each time the program ticks is kind of stupid. Any kind help would be greatly appreciated :) EDIT: After being put on hold, I shall specify a question. How would you implement a simulation of all basic human dynamics (reproduction, resource consumption) in an entire continent (with millions of people)?

  • I need advice on creating animal 3D walk cycles in XNA

    - by Zetar
    I want to purchase a number of 3D models from TurboSquid and animate them in an XNA game. I wrote a lot of games from 1985-1999 and have recently become involved with XNA. Now I would like to port one of my old games to the XBOX. I do have a background in 3D animation; but that was years ago. What is the current method for animating a walk cycle with a 3D model and using it inside XNA? Is there a book, software or a tutorial that you can recommend? Thanks in advance and sorry for such a broad and currently naive question.

  • sdl stencil buffer

    - by noddy
    I am trying to use the stencil buffer for rendering reflection and am working with SDL and OpenGL. When I give the command SDL_GL_SetAttribute(SDL_GL_STENCIL_SIZE,8),I get a return value of 0 indicating success,but when I try to get the size allocated using SDL_GL_GetAtribute( SDL_GL_STENCIL_SIZE,&i),I get a value of 0 for my stencil buffer due to which I am not getting the desired rendering. Can someone help me to correct my mistake? Is there some other initialization also required? Thanks

  • Command Pattern refactor for input processing?

    - by Casey
    According to Game Coding Complete 4th. ed. processing input via the following is considered unmanagable and inflexible. But does not show an example. I've used the Command pattern to represent GUI button commands but could not figure out how to represent the input from the keyboard and/or mouse. if(g_keyboard->KeyDown(KEY_ESC)) { quit = true; return; } //Processing if(g_keyboard->KeyDown(KEY_T)) { g_show_test_gateway = !g_show_test_gateway; } if(g_mouse->ButtonDown(a2de::Mouse::BUTTON2)) { g_selected_part = GWPart::PART_NONE; SetMouseImageToPartImage(); } ResetButtonStates(); g_prevButton = g_curButton; g_curButton = GetButtonHovered(); if(g_curButton) { g_mouse->SetImageToDefault(); if(g_mouse->ButtonDown(a2de::Mouse::BUTTON1) || g_mouse->ButtonPress(a2de::Mouse::BUTTON1)) { ButtonPressCommand curCommand(g_curButton); curCommand.Execute(); } else if(g_mouse->ButtonUp(a2de::Mouse::BUTTON1)) { if(g_prevButton == g_curButton) { ButtonReleaseCommand curCommand(g_curButton); curCommand.Execute(); if(g_curButton->GetType() == "export") { ExportCommand curCommand(g_curButton, *g_gateway); curCommand.Execute(); } } else { ResetButtonStates(); } } else { ButtonHoverCommand curCommand(g_curButton); curCommand.Execute(); } } else { g_status_message.clear(); SetMouseImageToPartImage(); if(g_mouse->ButtonDown(a2de::Mouse::BUTTON1)) { CreatePartCommand curCommand(*g_gateway, g_selected_part, a2de::Vector2D(g_mouse->GetX(), g_mouse->GetY())); curCommand.Execute(); } }

  • Can I name a team with the name of their city to avoid trademark issues?

    - by Paul
    I was wondering, if you want to make a NBA game on smartphones, without the license held by EA, the first solution seems to name your teams with a different name, such as "Chicragro Brulls" (this is just for the example), but would it be possible to just call your team with the name of the city, such as "Chicago vs. Dallas" ? I know the first solution was chosen by Pro Evolution Soccer, would you know any other game that don't use a license?

  • Programming Languages

    - by Shannon
    I realize this will be a very vague question, but please bear with me. I have a concept for an open-world game, hand to hand combat, with a fairly open storyline, but there is an issue. I'm not sure which programming language to use, as I'm fairly new to programming. I am considering c++, but I would like to hear your opinions on which language you believe would support this type of game most efficiently. Pros and cons would be appreciated.

  • Is it possible to programmatically prevent a game from pausing when its window loses focus?

    - by user836045
    I'm playing Skyrim in windowed mode and I am trying to create a bot for this game for personal use. I would like to have the bot play the game in the background, while I do other things, the only problem is that the game window pauses when it loses focus. Is there a way to make the Skyrim process think that it still has the focus, so it continues to run while I do something else on another window? I'm not a windows programming expert but would this be possible if I could somehow intercept the message that says unfocused or minimized to the process, and thus let the process think its still focused? I think Skyrim uses directx, so is it possible to come up with a solution from that end?

  • DirectX 9.0c and C++ GUI

    - by SullY
    Well, I'm trying to code a gui for my engine, but I've got some problems. I know how to make a UI overlay but buttons are still black magic for me. Anything I tried was to compilcated ( if it goes big ). To Example I tried to look if the mouse position is the same as the Pixel that is showing the button. But If I use some bigger areas it's getting to complicated. Now I'm searching for a Tutorial how to implement your own gui. I'm really confused about it. Well I hope you have/ know some good tutorials. By the way, I took a look at the DXUTSample, but it's to big to get overview.

  • jump pads problem

    - by Pasquale Sada
    I'm trying to make a character jump on a landing pad who stays above him. Here is the formula I've used (everything is pretty much self-explainable, maybe except character_MaxForce that is the total force the character can jump ): deltaPosition = target - character_position; sqrtTerm = Sqrt(2*-gravity.y * deltaPosition.y + MaxYVelocity* character_MaxForce); time = (MaxYVelocity-sqrtTerm) /gravity.y; speedSq = jumpVelocity.x* jumpVelocity.x + jumpVelocity.z *jumpVelocity.z; if speedSq < (character_MaxForce * character_MaxForce) we have the right time so we can store the value jumpVelocity.x = deltaPosition.x / time; jumpVelocity.z = deltaPosition.z / time; otherwise we try the other solution time = (MaxYVelocity+sqrtTerm) /gravity.y; and then store it jumpVelocity.x = deltaPosition.x / time; jumpVelocity.z = deltaPosition.z / time; jumpVelocity.y = MaxYVelocity; rigidbody_velocity = jumpVelocity; The problem is that the character is jumping away from the landing pad or sometime he jumps too far never hitting the landing pad.

  • HTML5 - check if font has loaded

    - by espais
    At present I load my font for my game in with @font-face For instance: @font-face { font-family: 'Orbitron'; src: url('res/orbitron-medium.ttf'); } and then reference it throughout my JS implementation as such: ctx.font = "12pt Orbitron"; where ctx is my 2d context from the canvas. However, I notice a certain lag time while the font is downloaded to the user. Is there a way I can use a default font until it is loaded in? Edit - I'll expand the question, because I hadn't taken the first comment into account. What would the proper method of handling this be in the case that a user has disabled custom fonts?

  • When dealing with a static game board, what are some methods to make it more interesting?

    - by Ólafur Waage
    Let's say you have a game board that you look at. It does not move but there is some action going on. For example Chess, Checkers, Solitaire. The game I'm working on is not one of these but it's a good reference. What are some methods you can apply to the game or the design that increases the appeal of the game to the user? Of course you can make it prettier but what are some other methods you can use? For example: Visual cues, game design changes, user interface arrangement, etc.

  • How do I create weapon attachments?

    - by Tron86
    My question is; I am developing a game for XNA and I am trying to create a weapon attachment for my player model. My player model loads the .md3 format and reads tags for attachment points. I am able to get the tag of my model's hand. And I am also able to get the tag of my weapon's handle. Each tag I am able to get the rotation and position of and this is how I am calculating it: Model.worldMatrix = Matrix.CreateScale(Model.scale) * Matrix.CreateRotationX(-MathHelper.PiOver2) * Matrix.CreateRotationY(MathHelper.PiOver2); Pretty simple, the player model has a scale and its orientation(it loads on its side so I just use a 90 degree X axis rotation, and a Y axis rotation to face away from the camera). I then calculate the torso tag on the lower body, which gives me a local coordinate at the waist. Then I take that matrix and calculate the tag_weapon in the upper body. This gives me the hand position in local space. I also get the rotation matrix from that tag that I store for later use. All this seems to work fine. Now I move onto my weapon: Matrix weaponWorld = Matrix.CreateScale(CurrentWeapon.scale) * Matrix.CreateRotationX(-MathHelper.PiOver2) * TagRotationMatrix * Matrix.CreateTranslation(HandTag.Position) * Matrix.CreateRotationY(PlayerRotation) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(CollisionBody.Position) * You may notice the weapon matrix gets rotated by 90 degress on the X axis as well. This is because they load in on their sides. Once again this seems pretty simple and follows the SRT order I keep reading about. My TagRotation matrix is the hand's rotation. HandTag.Position is its position in local space. CreateRotationY(PlayerRotation) is the player's rotation in world space, and the CollisionBody.Position is the player's world location. Everything seems to be in order, and almost works in game. However when the gun spawns and follows the player's hand it seems to be flipped on an axis every couple frames. Almost like the X or Y axis is being inversed then put right back. Its hard to explain and I am totally stumped. Even removing all my X axis fixes does nothing to solve the problem. Hopefully I explained everything enough as I am a bit new to this! Thanks!

Are there any inherit disadvantages to using Air Mobile that I'm missing? Where is the documentation for Air mobile (I googled and found no recent books or documentation pdf so far)

  • Is this the most effect simple way to display a moving image? SDL2

    - by user36324
    I've looked around for tutorials on SDL2, but there isnt many so I am curious i was messing around and is this an effective way to move an image. One problem is that it drags along the image to where it moves. #include "SDL.h" #include "SDL_image.h" int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { bool exit = false; SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_EVERYTHING); SDL_Window *win = SDL_CreateWindow("Hello World!", 100, 100, 640, 480, SDL_WINDOW_SHOWN); SDL_Renderer *ren = SDL_CreateRenderer(win, -1, SDL_RENDERER_ACCELERATED | SDL_RENDERER_PRESENTVSYNC); SDL_Surface *png = IMG_Load("character.png"); SDL_Rect src; src.x = 0; src.y = 0; src.w = 161; src.h = 159; SDL_Rect dest; dest.x = 50; dest.y = 50; dest.w = 161; dest.h = 159; SDL_Texture *tex = SDL_CreateTextureFromSurface(ren, png); SDL_FreeSurface(png); while(exit==false){ dest.x++; SDL_RenderClear(ren); SDL_RenderCopy(ren, tex, &src, &dest); SDL_RenderPresent(ren); } SDL_Delay(5000); SDL_DestroyTexture(tex); SDL_DestroyRenderer(ren); SDL_DestroyWindow(win); SDL_Quit(); }

  • Ideas for card deck names [closed]

    - by Milan Babuškov
    I'm creating a card game, and wish to offer players to choose from different sets of playing cards. The game logic remains the same, only the design and graphics on the cards would be different. It would feature classic French set, German/Hungarian one, and a bunch of other custom designed ones. I'm looking for some cool names to give to those sets. I thought maybe to use names of some world cities like "London set", "Paris set", "Tokyo set", but there might be something better. I know this is really open-ended question, so there might not be a definitive "correct" answer, but I hope this kind of brainstorming would be useful to anyone looking for ideas to name a set of... well, anything. I'll up-vote any good idea, no matter if I don't end up using any of those.

  • Collision detection - player gets stuck in platform when jumping

    - by Sun
    So I'm having some problems with my collision detection with my platformer. Take the image below as an example. When I'm running right I am unable to go through the platform, but when I hold my right key and jump, I end up going through the object as shown in the image, below is the code im using: if(shapePlatform.intersects(player.getCollisionShape())){ Vector2f vectorSide = new Vector2f(shapePlatform.getCenter()[0] - player.getCollisionShape().getCenter()[0], shapePlatform.getCenter()[1] - player.getCollisionShape().getCenter()[1]); player.setVerticleSpeed(0f); player.setJumping(false); if(vectorSide.x > 0 && !(vectorSide.y > 0)){ player.getPosition().set(player.getPosition().x-3, player.getPosition().y); }else if(vectorSide.y > 0){ player.getPosition().set(player.getPosition().x, player.getPosition().y); }else if(vectorSide.x < 0 && !(vectorSide.y > 0)){ player.getPosition().set(player.getPosition().x+3, player.getPosition().y); } } I'm basically getting the difference between the centre of the player and the centre of the colliding platform to determine which side the player is colliding with. When my player jumps and walks right on the platform he goes right through. The same can also be observed when I jump on the actual platform, should I be resetting the players y in this situation?
