• Moving and resizing JPanels object inside JFrame.

- by Gabriel A. Zorrilla
Continuing my quest of learning Java by doing a simple game, i stumbled upon a little issue. My gameboard extends JPanel as well as each piece of the board. Now, this presents some problems: Cant set size of each piece, therefore, each piece JPanel ocupy the whole JFrame, concealing the rest of the pieces and the background (gameboard). Cant set the position of the pieces. I have the default flow manager. Tried setbounds and no luck. Perhaps i should make the piece to extend other JComponent?

• Data Model Evolution

- by redleafong
Hey guys, When writing code I am seeing requirements to change data models (e.g. adding/changing/removing data members from a class). When these data models belong to an interface, it seems difficult to change without breaking the existing client codes. So I am wondering if there is any best practice of designing interfaces/data models in a way to minimize the impact during evolution. The closest thing I can find from google is data contract versioning. But that seems to be a .net specific topic. I am wondering if the same practice applies to the Java world, or there is a different or generic way to deal with data model evolution. Thanks

• How do I use Criteria to make a join on a date field (in DB2) based on the year.

- by HtmlTableGuru
I have a java.util.Date field in my Object. I would like to use Criteria to select all rows that have a date field with a given year. The SQL would look like the following: SELECT * FROM GAME GM WHERE YEAR(GM.GAME_DATE) = 2010 How can I use Criteria to accomplish this? Thanks in advance. public Collection<Game> getGamesByDate(Date date){ Collection<Game> games = null; try { session.beginTransaction(); Criteria criteria = session.createCriteria(Game.class); criteria .... ... ... games = criteria.list(); } catch (HibernateException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } return games; }

• How to set up precision attribute used by @Collumn annotation ???

- by Arthur Ronald F D Garcia
I often use java.lang.Integer as primary key. Here you can see some piece of code @Entity private class Person { private Integer id; @Id @Column(precision=8, nullable=false) public Integer getId() { } } I need to set up its precision attribute value equal to 8. But, when exporting The schema (Oracle), it does not work as expected. AnnotationConfiguration configuration = new AnnotationConfiguration(); configuration .addAnnotatedClass(Person.class) .setProperty(Environment.DIALECT, "org.hibernate.dialect.OracleDialect") .setProperty(Environment.DRIVER, "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"); SchemaExport schema = new SchemaExport(configuration); schema.setOutputFile("schema.sql"); schema.create(true, false); schema.sql outputs create table Person (id number(10,0) not null) Always i get 10. Is There some workaround to get 8 instead of 10 ?

• Can SHA-1 algorithm be computed on a stream? With low memory footprint?

- by raoulsson
I am looking for a way to compute SHA-1 checksums of very large files without having to fully load them into memory at once. I don't know the details of the SHA-1 implementation and therefore would like to know if it is even possible to do that. If you know the SAX XML parser, then what I look for would be something similar: Computing the SHA-1 checksum by only always loading a small part into memory at a time. All the examples I found, at least in Java, always depend on fully loading the file/byte array/string into memory. If you even know implementations (any language), then please let me know!

• Standard Workflow when working with JPA

- by jschoen
I am currently trying to wrap my head around working with JPA. I can't help but feel like I am missing something or doing it the wrong way. It just seems forced so far. What I think I know so far is that their are couple of ways to work with JPA and tools to support this. You can do everything in Java using annotations, and let JPA (whatever implementation you decide to use) create your schema and update it when changes are made. You can use a tool to reverse engineer you database and generate the entity classes for you. When the schema is updated you have to regenerate these classes, or manually update them. There seems to be drawbacks to both, and benefits to both (as with all things). My question is in an ideal situation what is the standard workflow with JPA? Most schemas will require updates during the maintenance phase and especially during the development phase, so how is this handled?

• J2ME app to access incoming call - Where to start?

- by Jay
Here's my requirement: I often receive calls from unidentified numbers on my mobile phones. I would like an application which would use a reference list like this, and show me the carrier name and the area of origin along with the number on screen. Mobile make : Sony Ericsson Model : C902 Operating System: Propreitary J2ME: MIDP 2.0 Here are my questions: Is it possible to do something like this? I have installed a lot of java apps on my mobile, and all of them have to be launched seperately, can be run in the background, but they never seem to access anything native. If it is possible, which area of J2Me should I start with, for creating an application that achieves the above requirement? If it is not possbile, what are my alternatives?

• Client or server side invocation to google API?

- by Raffo
I'm writing a web application with GWT and I've to call google calendar's API to retrieve some information. I now have this dilemma: Is it better to use a client side invocation (using javascript or gwt-gdata library) or using the standard google library for java to call the service at server side and then passing all the data to the client via an async call?? I'm not able to understand pros and cons of the two approaches... In particular, I need to call several time the calendar API to retrieve events and let users add new ones, etc. Can you help me?

• What processor is javax.xml.transform Using?

- by Jeremy Witmer
I've implented a simple webapp that transforms XML based on an XSTL stylesheet. It works fine on all the Windows servers I've deployed it on (to Tomcat), but on all Linux systems, I get a compile error on the XSLT. As best I can tell, it's because Java 1.6 isn't using the same processor behind javax.xml.transform. On the one Linux system, it's org.apache.xalan.xslt, version 2.4. What I can't figure out is how to generically figure out what any given system is using behind javax.xml.transform. Or, if anyone has any hints on what else I might do to figure out the problem, that'd be good, too.

• libriaries on Android

- by Will
In native development, you can produce libraries - .so, .dll etc - that other libraries and programs can share. In Java, you can put your code in a JAR in the classpath and other programs and libraries can use it. So how can you do modular programs in Android? I get the impression from the documentation that each APK is a self-contained island. Can different APKs share code? And how does installation work when you have these external dependencies? Can you specify that you rely on library that is not in your APK and get it installed too? If you can't have 'dynamic linking', can you have 'static linking' by developing your shared code and somehow putting the equiv of a JAR into each APK that requires it?

• Spring 3 MVC - Does Anything Just Work? Very Simple Use Case Not Working

- by jboyd
index.jsp ...
${myobject}
... HomeController.java @RequestMapping(value = "/index") public ModelAndView indexPath() { System.out.println("going home"); return new ModelAndView("index", "myobject", "isastring"); } Output: going home The
on index doesn't show anything, how is this even possible? I absolutely cannot get my index.jsp to show this bean, I've tried using a usebean, I've tried storing it on the session, and now I'm directly placing it in the model. Nothing works. Spring 3 has been like every other spring release, intensely frustrating.

• Missing prop-base file problem

- by Tony
I am using Eclipse and SVNSubversion as a repository for a Java project. After updating the local repository and starting Eclipse, an error (in the Problems tab) appeared stating that a specific prop-base file was missing from the build path. Being inexperienced, I have accidentally deleted the prop-base file icon from the project build-path library section. Since then the numbers of errors have grown exponentially... What should I do? Updating the local repository and/or starting a new Eclipse project from the same source did not solve the problem, does anyone have an idea?

• Speed up multiple JDBC SQL querys?

- by paddydub
I'm working on a shortest path a* algorithm in java with a mysql db. I'm executing the following SQL Query approx 300 times in the program to find route connections from a database of 10,000 bus connections. It takes approx 6-7 seconds to execute the query 300 times. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up or any ideas on a different method i can use ? Thanks ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("select * from connections" + " where Connections.From_Station_stopID ="+StopID+";"); while (rs.next()) { int id = rs.getInt("To_Station_id"); String routeID = rs.getString("To_Station_routeID"); Double lat = rs.getDouble("To_Station_lat"); Double lng = rs.getDouble("To_Station_lng"); int time = rs.getInt("Time"); }

• Should GSON ignore varying types if they're not used in a class?

- by loeschg
I'm making an API call that returns JSON which has a particular field which either returns false or a map depending on content. It's a field that I don't care about. I expected GSON to ignore this particular field, though it doesn't seem to be. The object generation fails with the following message: com.google.gson.JsonSyntaxException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Expected a string but was BEGIN_OBJECT at line 1 column 403560 I've seen this particular question (Gson deserialize json with varying value types). I want to make sure I need to make a custom deserializer before doing so. I'm wondering if I may have another issue. edit: Example:
} vs
yes" Another Edit: I actually had the field in my model object... I was referencing the wrong class. Judge away :)

• Asp.net (c#) and a JEE 5 webservice

- by arinte
We have a asp.net app that talks to a pretty complex JEE 5 web service. Everything works fine except when we throw an exception. We throw a simple exception without any inner/orig exception, but we get this message on the .Net side. Additional XML content is present in the fault detail element. Only a single element is allowed. Works fine with a java client, as in we can get the exception message. What can we do?

• How do I send telnet option codes?

- by Matt
I've written a socket listener in Java that just sends some data to the client. If I connect to the server using telnet, I want the server to send some telnet option codes. Do I just send these like normal messages? Like, if I wanted the client to print "hello", I would do this: PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(clientSocket.getOutputStream()); out.print("hello"); out.flush(); But when I try to send option codes, the client just prints them. Eg, the IAC char (0xff) just gets printed as a strange y character when I do this: PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(clientSocket.getOutputStream()); out.print((char)0xff); out.flush();

• Increasing the JVM maximum heap size for memory intensive applications

- by Alceu Costa
I need to run a Java memory intensive application that uses more than 2GB, but I am having problems to increase the heap maximum size. So far, I have tried the following approaches: Setting the -Xmx parameter, e.g. -Xmx3000m. This approaches fails at the creation of the JVM. From what I've googled, it looks like that -Xmx must be less than 2GB. Using the -XX:+AggressiveHeap option. When I try this approach I get an 'Not enough memory' error that tells that the heap size is 1273.4 MB, even though my computer has 8GB of memory. Is there another approach that I can try to increase the maximum heap size of the JVM? Here's a summary of the computer specs: OS: Windows 7 (64 bit) Processor: Intel Core i7 (2.66 GHz) Memory: 8 GB

So yeah.. I just want to know how to get rid of those weird colgroup and col boxes in my table and how to make the table work normally! Thanks yall!

• Recursive Binary Search Tree Insert

- by Nick Sinklier
So this is my first java program, but I've done c++ for a few years. I wrote what I think should work, but in fact it does not. So I had a stipulation of having to write a method for this call: tree.insertNode(value); where value is an int. I wanted to write it recursively, for obvious reasons, so I had to do a work around: public void insertNode(int key) { Node temp = new Node(key); if(root == null) root = temp; else insertNode(temp); } public void insertNode(Node temp) { if(root == null) root = temp; else if(temp.getKey() <= root.getKey()) insertNode(root.getLeft()); else insertNode(root.getRight()); } Thanks for any advice.

• What should I do if a IOException is thrown?

- by Roman
I have the following 3 lines of the code: ServerSocket listeningSocket = new ServerSocket(earPort); Socket serverSideSocket = listeningSocket.accept(); BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(serverSideSocket.getInputStream())); The compiler complains about all of these 3 lines and its complain is the same for all 3 lines: unreported exception java.io.IOException; In more details, these exception are thrown by new ServerSocket, accept() and getInputStream(). I know I need to use try ... catch .... But for that I need to know what this exceptions mean in every particular case (how should I interpret them). When they happen? I mean, not in general, but in these 3 particular cases.

• Convert byte array to understandable String

- by Ender
I have a program that handles byte arrays in Java, and now I would like to write this into a XML file. However, I am unsure as to how I can convert the following byte array into a sensible String to write to a file. Assuming that it was Unicode characters I attempted the following code: String temp = new String(encodedBytes, "UTF-8"); Only to have the debugger show that the encodedBytes contain " ^-m/ufffd IA". The String should contain a hash in alphanumerical format. How would I turn the above String into a sensible String for output?

• Benefit of outputting JSON as opposed to plain HTML

- by Franco
Hey guys, Just wondering which is best here. I want to output data from a table in my DB then put a lot of this data into a html table on the fly on my page. Im working with Java on the server side. Basically I pull the results form the DB and have the raw data..just what next? There is a chance I may want to take data from multiple tables in order to combine it into one table for my site. I retrieve the results of the query from the DB, now do i create a text from it in the form of json which i can parse as json using jquery upon the return of the object to my browser?(kind of a sub question of this question: Is just using a stringbuilder the correct way to make a json object to output?) Or.. Should i build the HTML as a string and output that to the browser instead? Which is better and why? Thanks in advance!

• How to implement GCM in Google AppEngine?

- by Broken System
I'm a PHP Developer and Web Designer. In my work a partner asked me if I could set up a Google Cloud Messaging server. I read the documentation but couldn't find a clear tutorial to set up this server. I got no knowleadge about Java so it makes my job harder. I could "compile" a war file using ant as GCM Demo Tutorial says. But I can't deploy it to my AppEngine server to try it out (It's my first time using AppEngine too). Could you give me some steps to create my own GCM server? Sorry about my bad english. Thanks!
