    Hi guys, I'm having trouble with one particular issue, I was hoping someone could help me out. I've completed the MVC Music Store tutorial, and now I'm trying to add some administrator functionality - practice as I will have to do this in an MVC application in my job. The application is using the aspnet membership api, and what I have done so far is created a view to list the users. What I want to be able to do, is click on the users name in order to change their password. To try and carry the username to the changeUserPassword controller (custom made). I registered a new route in the global.asax.cs file in order to display the username in the URL, which is working so far. UserList View <%: Html.RouteLink(user.UserName, "AdminPassword", new { controller="StoreManager", action="changeUserPassword", username = user.UserName }) %> Global.asax.cs routes.MapRoute( "AdminPassword", //Route name "{controller}/{action}/{username}", //URL with parameters new { controller = "StoreManager", action = "changeUserPassword", username = UrlParameter.Optional} ); So now the URL looks like this when I reach the changeUserPassword view: http://localhost:51236/StoreManager/changeUserPassword/Administrator Here is the GET changeUserPassword action: public ActionResult changeUserPassword(string username) { ViewData["username"] = username; return View(); } I wanted to store the username in ViewData as I would like to use it in the GET changeUserPassword for display purposes, and also as a hidden value in the form. This is in order to pass it through to enable me to reset the password. Having debugged through the code, it seems that 'username' is null. How can I get this to work so that the username carries over from the Html.RouteLink, to the changeUserPassword action?     Given two related tables (reports, report_fields) where there can be many report_fields entries for each reports entry, I need to allow the user to enter new report_fields, delete existing report_fields, and re-arrange the order. Currently I am using a DetailsView to handle the editing of the reports. I added some logic to handle report_fields, and currently it allows you to succesfully re-arrange the order, but i'm a little stumped as to the best way to add new items, or delete existing items. The basic logic I have is that each report_fields is represented by a . It has a description as the text, and a field for each field in the report_fields table. I use JQuery Sortable to allow the user to re-arrange the LIs.   • Why isn't an exception thrown when the right .NET framework version is not present?

    We have a .NET application which targets .NET 3.5. Our clients run it from a shared drive (very infrequently) in order to have a central config file location. We have noticed that if a workstation accesses the shared drive and runs the program, but does not have .NET 3.5 installed, nothing happens, no error, no exception, no log entry, it just doesn't launch. Why is there no error message shown in windows by the CLR? Is there something I can put at the beginning of the code that would ensure that a proper error message is displayed? It is not an option to run an installer that would check for prereqs, as we are only installing it in one central location. Thanks.

    I've installed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on web server (Server 2008 Enterprise), so running IIS 7.0. I want to change the version of .NET Framework used by an existing site. So I right-click on appropriate Application Pool and selected Edit Application Pool. The .NET Framework dropdown does not include an explicit entry for framework 3.5, but just 2.0.50727. Does anyone know off the top of their head--is this just because the version of the core RTL in 3.5 is still 2.0? Or do I need to do something additional to get IIS to see version 3.5? (Did try restarting IIS). Thanks!

Whenever an item is selected in the dropdown control the styling is completely removed from all of the list items. How can I prevent this from happening?     Hi all! What i am trying to do here is to show a couple of validation messages in form of a bulletlist, so i have a Div on my master page containing a asp:bulletlist. Like this: <div> <asp:BulletedList ID="blstValidationErrorMessage" runat="server" BulletStyle="Disc"> </asp:BulletedList> </div> When i then click the Save button from any of my pages (inside the main contentPlaceHolder) i create a list of messages and give this list as datasouce like this: blstValidationErrorMessage.DataSource = validationMessageCollection; blstValidationErrorMessage.DataBind(); The save button is located inside an updatepanel: asp:UpdatePanel runat="server" ID="UpdatePanel" ChildrenAsTriggers="true" UpdateMode="Conditional" Nothing happens, i can see that the datasource of the bulletlist contains X items, the problems must arise because the Save button is inside an update panel and the elements outside this updatepanel (master page controls for example) is not refreshed. So my question is, how do i make the bulletlist refresh after the postback? Thanks in advance.

  • Can I use a static cache Helper method in a NET MVC controller?

    I realise there have been a few posts regarding where to add a cache check/update and the separation of concerns between the controller, the model and the caching code. There are two great examples that I have tried to work with but being new to MVC I wonder which one is the cleanest and suits the MVC methodology the best? I know you need to take into account DI and unit testing. Example 1 (Helper method with delegate) ...in controller var myObject = CacheDataHelper.Get(thisID, () => WebServiceServiceWrapper.GetMyObjectBythisID(thisID)); Example 2 (check for cache in model class) in controller var myObject = WebServiceServiceWrapper.GetMyObjectBythisID(thisID)); then in model class.............. if (!CacheDataHelper.Get(cachekey, out myObject)) { //do some repository processing // Add obect to cache CacheDataHelper.Add(myObject, cachekey); } Both use a static cache helper class but the first example uses a method signature with a delegate method passed in that has the name of the repository method being called. If the data is not in cache the method is called and the cache helper class handles the adding or updating to the current cache. In the second example the cache check is part of the repository method with an extra line to call the cache helper add method to update the current cache. Due to my lack of experience and knowledge I am not sure which one is best suited to MVC. I like the idea of calling the cache helper with the delegate method name in order to remove any cache code in the repository but I am not sure if using the static method in the controller is ideal? The second example deals with the above but now there is no separation between the caching check and the repository lookup. Perhaps that is not a problem as you know it requires caching anyway?

There is a possibility of installing a .NET application that queries the same DB that the VB6 application queries, which is an SQL Server 2000 DB. The VB6 application also depends on third-party ActiveX controls (registered .ocx files). The concern is - will the .NET Framework installation replace any files or break the VB6 runtime in any way. In other words, can we safely assume that an installation of the .NET Framework is completely independent of any previous VB6 installations and will not interfere with the running application?

    My organization previously used ASP.NET for web projects. They are now migrating to WebLogic Portal/JEE for all future web projects. My experience as a Lead Developer / Architect is totally with .NET projects. I want to get ramped up on WebLogic/JEE, so I can contribute to future projects. Any training/certification suggestions for WebLogic/JEE, in a 6-month time frame? Assume that I will need to fund my own training, and I am working full time. So, money and time are limited.

I've seen fairly passionate comments from various people about which is best and have even found some differing comments from Microsoft. My web service should be fairly simple: I want to expose bus timetable information.
