  • FileInputStream and FileOutputStream to the same file: Is a read() guaranteed to see all write()s that "happened before"?

    - by user946850
I am using a file as a cache for big data. One thread writes to it sequentially, another thread reads it sequentially. Can I be sure that all data that has been written (by write()) in one thread can be read() from another thread, assuming a proper "happens-before" relationship in terms of the Java memory model? Is this behavior documented? EDIT: In my JDK, FileOutputSream does not override flush(), and OutputStream.flush() is empty. That's why I'm wondering... EDIT^2: The streams in question are owned exclusively by a class that I have full control of. Each stream is guaranteed to be accesses by one thread only. My tests show that it works as expected, but I'm still wondering if this is guaranteed and documented. • how to get audio frequency data from a wave file?

    - by potlee
I want to build a speech recognition engine in ruby. I know i'll never get there, doing it just for fun. I need to get data for the frequencies of the sound stored in a wav file to compare with data i already have of different sounds that i want to recognize. I will write the code in ruby but i dont think there are any libraries for this written in ruby, they would be too slow if there were any anyway. The good thing about ruby is I'll be able to use libraries for .net via IronRuby or Java via Jruby. How can i get the frequency data?

  • Search in big text log files

    - by 0xFF
Hi, let's say you have an game server which creating text log files of gamers actions, and from time to time you need to lookup something in those logs files (like investigating an scam or loosing an item). Just for example you have 100 files and each file have size between 20MB and 50MB - How you would search them quickly? What I have already tried to do is create several threads and each invidual thread will map his own file to memory (let say memory should not be problem if it not exceed 500MB of ram) perform search here, result was something around 1 second per file : File:a26.log - read in: 0.891, lines: 625282, matches: 78848 Is there better way how to do that ? - because it seems to me kinda slow. thanks. (java was used for this case)

  • URLEncode Error

    - by user2949519
I have an Android app. Basically what it does is that user can search a car reference no. in EditText for example:- 270/30 and retrieve all the details of the particular car with the same column value in the database. I'm encoding this editext value in Android using URLEncoder and decoding it back in php webservice code. But the decoded value im getting is 027/13 ....instead of 270/30. To make it clear more im here by pasting my java Encoding part EditText SearchField=(EditText)findViewById(R.id.editText1); String SearchValue= SearchField.getText().toString(); Now the encoding code in Asynctask is data +="&" + URLEncoder.encode("data", "UTF-8") + "="+SearchValue; Now the PHP part where i decoded this code $data = urldecode($_POST['data']); Please help me how to encode/decode this given format ... Thanks in Advance

  • dbpedia /flash how to?

    - by user348174
I am interested in visualising data from dbpedia in flash but I am a little out of my depth technically... I know a bit of actionscript, javascript and some php but I'm not familiar with SPARQL or java. The documentation I can find on it is a little over my head. I have a couple of questions before I totally ruling it out: • Has anyone come across an example/tutorial for accessing dbpedia data through flash? • Im a little hazy on how you work with dbpedia. Do you download the entire database or can you connect to a database on their server? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Better to extend a class or modify it directly?

    - by primehunter326
Hi, So I'm working on creating a visualization for a data structure in Java. I already have the implementation of the data structure (Binary Search Tree) to start with, but I need to add some additional functionality to the included node class. As far as conventions and best practices are concerned, should I create a subclass of the node with this added functionality or should I just modify what I have and document it there? My question is similar to what's asked here but that's a little over my head. I know it probably doesn't matter much for what I'm doing, so I'm asking this more as a general thing.

  • How to acquire the Context in an Adobe AIR Native Extension?

    - by rotaercz
In the following line of code... ProgressDialog progressDialog = ProgressDialog.show(getBaseContext(), "LOADING_TITLE", "LOADING_MESSAGE"); In place of getBaseContext() I've tried... getApplicationContext() this NativeActivity.this (NativeActivity)getApplicationContext() Among others. I'm not sure why it's not working. In the NativeExtensionContext which extends FREContext I am passing the activity using getActivity() to NativeActivity. Everything works well but I get a "Nullpointerexception" or “android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window — token null is not for an application” when I try I try to get a reference to the Context. Anyone with experience using Adobe AIR Native Extensions and/or Android Java would be great.

  • how to use a wav file in eclipse

    - by AlphaAndOmega
I've been trying to add audio to a project I've been doing. I found some code on here for html that is also supposed to work with file but it keeps saying "Exception in thread "main" javax.sound.sampled.UnsupportedAudioFileException: could not get audio input stream from input file at javax.sound.sampled.AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(Unknown Source) at LoopSound.main(LoopSound.java:15)" the code public class LoopSound { public static void main(String[] args) throws Throwable { File file = new File("c:\\Users\\rabidbun\\Pictures\\10177-m-001.wav"); Clip clip = AudioSystem.getClip(); // getAudioInputStream() also accepts a File or InputStream AudioInputStream wav = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream( file ); clip.open(wav); // loop continuously clip.loop(-1000); SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() { public void run() { // A GUI element to prevent the Clip's daemon Thread // from terminating at the end of the main() JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Close to exit!"); } }); } } What is wrong with the code?

  • Create a string with n characters.

    - by C. Ross
Is there a way in java to create a string with a specified number of a specified character? In my case I would need to create a string with 10 spaces. My current code is: StringBuffer outputBuffer = new StringBuffer(length); for (int i = 0; i < length; i++){ outputBuffer.append(" "); } return outputBuffer.toString(); Is there a better way to accomplish the same thing. In particular I'd like something that is fast (in terms of execution).

  • Python - Create a list with initial capacity

    - by Claudiu
Code like this often happens: l = [] while foo: #baz l.append(bar) #qux This is really slow if you're about to append thousands of elements to your list, as the list will have to constantly be re-initialized to grow. (I understand that lists aren't just wrappers around some array-type-thing, but something more complicated. I think this still applies, though; let me know if not). In Java, you can create an ArrayList with an initial capacity. If you have some idea how big your list will be, this will be a lot more efficient. I understand that code like this can often be re-factored into a list comprehension. If the for/while loop is very complicated, though, this is unfeasible. Is there any equivalent for us python programmers?

  • Mixing HTML and STRUTS2 tags

    - by ryan
I have a form which has both HMTL tags and struts tags. I use the HTML tags because of alignment issues with struts tags. <s:form action = "setNode" name = "processing" method ="POST"> <script> <!-- createTree(catArray); </script> <br/> <s:radio name="processOption" label="" list="{'Add','Move','Delete'}" ></s:radio> <s:textfield name="node" ></s:textfield> <s:submit name="Go" value=" Go " align="center" /> </s:form> the createTree function creates a tree form with HTML checkbox input types. The action triggers a java function. How do i see which checkboxes are checked?

  • How can I make a recursive version of my iterative method?

    - by user247679
Greetings. I am trying to write a recursive function in Java that prints the numbers one through n. (n being the parameter that you send the function.) An iterative solution is pretty straightforward: public static void printNumbers(int n){ for(int i = 1; i <= n; i++){ System.out.println(i); i++; } As a novice programmer, I'm having troubles figuring out how a recursive version of this method would work. Any bright ideas? Thanks for reading my problem!

  • How do I ensure data consistency in this concurrent situation?

    - by MalcomTucker
The problem is this: I have multiple competing threads (100+) that need to access one database table Each thread will pass a String name - where that name exists in the table, the database should return the id for the row, where the name doesn't already exist, the name should be inserted and the id returned. There can only ever be one instance of name in the database - ie. name must be unique How do I ensure that thread one doesn't insert name1 at the same time as thread two also tries to insert name1? In other words, how do I guarantee the uniqueness of name in a concurrent environment? This also needs to be as efficient as possible - this has the potential to be a serious bottleneck. I am using MySQL and Java. Thanks

  • Eclipse buildpath automatically taking all JARs of a internal directory

    - by Niko
How do I configure my project buildpath to have a set of .jar files located in the same directory automatically included in the buildpath ? Meaning that adding a new .jar file to this directory (and refreshing the project) updates the buildpath ? Rem : I am not working in a Webapp but in a standalone Java app. I know that it is possible in a Dynamic Web Project to have all the .jars located in WEB-INF/lib to be included in the build path. Is it possible to do kind of the same include but in standalone app ? I am using Eclipse 3.4

  • How to test if an array contains a pair of numbers whose product is odd?

    - by John
How can I write a function that takes an array of integers and returns true if their exists a pair of numbers whose product is odd? What are the properties of odd integers? And of course, how do you write this function in Java? Also, maybe a short explanation of how you went about formulating an algorithm for the actual implementation. Yes, this is a function out of a textbook. No, this is not homework—I'm just trying to learn, so please no "do your own homework comments."

  • how to represent negative number to array of integers ?

    - by stdnoit
I must convert string of 1324312321 to array of integers in java this is fine. I could use integer parseint and string substring method but how do I repesent -12312312 to my original array of integer.. the fact that - is a char / string and convert to array of integer would alter the value ( even though I convert - to integer-equivalent , it would change the rest of 12312312) it must be an array of integers and how should I convert negative numbers and still keeep the same value somehow reminding me of two complements trick but i dont think i need to go down to binary level in my program.. any other trick for doing this? thanks!

  • JNAerator Unnamed Union Missing in Structure

    - by Nick
I'm trying to get JNAerator to generate some JNA backed Java code from a C shared library and everything is fine except that it failed to generate an unnamed union nested inside a structure. Example: typedef struct MY_STRUCTURE { union { My_Type1 var1; My_Type2 var2; }; }MY_STRUCTURE; If I change the header to make the union have a name it will work. But for obvious reasons I can't just change the header without breaking the shared library I'm trying to use. Any solutions other than changing the header file and shared library to named union?

  • Berkeley DB tuple with unknown datatype

    - by Ronnie
I'm working with a Berkeley database (in Java). I need to read a tuple where the sequence is a string, either an int or long, then another string. How can I determine if the tuple holds an int or a long? Depending on what the tuple holds, I'll do one of the following: String s1 = input.readString(); int num1 = input.readInt(); String s2= input.readString(); or String s1 = input.readString(); long num1 = input.readLong(); String s2= input.readString(); The int is 4 bytes and the long is 8 bytes. If the tuple holds an int and I read it in as a long, I get an invalid value as it converts the 4 byte int + 4 bytes of the following string into a long.

  • Architect desperately wants to use SOAP over JMS

    - by Aerosteak
Hello, I have used JMS in the past to build application and it works great. Now I work with Architects that would love to use the Spec : SOAP over Java Message Service 1.0. This spec seams overly complicated. I do not see many implementation (Beside the vendors pushing for the spec). Does anyone here is using this specification in a production environment? What is your main benefit of using this spec? Link: http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/CR-soapjms-20090604/

  • Creating immutable objects from javabean

    - by redzedi
Hi All, I am involved in this project where we are building on good bit of legacy code. I have a particular situation about one big java bean object which has to be transferred over wire. So my first thought was to make it immutable and serializable to do the trick .At this point I am faced with a few difficult choices :- 1 Ideally I want some way to automatically generate an immutable, serializable version of this class. I dont have the scope to refactor or alter this class in any way and i would really really hate to have to copy paste the class with a different name ?? 2 Assuming that i gave up on 1 i.e i actually chose to duplicate code of the HUGE javabean class , i still will be in the unsavoury situation of having to write a constructor with some 20-25 parameters to make this class immutable. what is a better way to make a class immutable other than constructor injection ?? Thanks and Regards,

  • What's the purpuse behind wildcards and how are they different from generics?

    - by Nazgulled
Hi, I never heard about wildcars until a few days ago and after reading my teacher's Java book, I'm still not sure about what's it for and wwhy would I need to use it. Let's say I have a super class Animal and few sub classes like Dog, Cat, Parrot, etc... Now I need to have a list of animals, my first thought would be something like: List<Animal> listAnimals Instead, my colleagues are recommending something like: List<? extends Animal> listAnimals Why should I use wildcards instead of simple generics? Let's say I need to have a get/set method, should I use the former or the later? How are they so different?

  • Jump-To-Code-Line Eclipse Shortcuts

    - by scrr
Hello, is it possible, in Eclipse, to mark certain lines with Shortcuts and be able to quickly jump to those lines? Example: Let's say I have maintenanceHeavyMethod() at line 120 in my class, gameLoop() at line 800 and some listener at line 1460. I'd like to f.ex. press CTRL-SHIFT-1, 2, 3 etc. to mark those positions, and then use f.ex. CTRL-1, 2, 3 to immediately jump to them. I don't like split-screens etc, but I need to jump around when writing. Is there such a feature? I'm using latest Eclipse to write Java-programs.
