• My new hard drive doesn't have rights on my old one?

  Until recently I had a 1 TB hard disk with Windows 7 on it, I have bought myself a SSD, removed the old harddisc and installed Windows 7 on my new one. After that I put back the old hard disk, and formatted it, now I could use that as backup and to keep files on. Nice, right? Well I was updating .Net framework through Windows update, when it stalled. I noticed some space was used on one of the drives on my secondary 'previously primary' hard disk. Apparently it was the .Net framework, trying to save some temporary files on my secondary disc, because it was the one with the most space. It was like it didn't get access. I cancled the installation and rebooted the computer. Now wanting to remove the temporary folder on my secondary harddisk. It told me. "You don't have access by SYSTEM", I don't understand, my user is administrator, its the only user there is and at the same time I can remove and delete any other folder on that drive. I'm gonna go a little pseudo here. But it feels as if the computer treats the old harddisk as protected from tampering by the new SSD. Also, I feel I should mention, they are both listed as primary, ... primary 0 and primary 1. Both using SATA cable. My old hard drive was partioned into 3 drives. 2 of them said the current owner was 'Administrator/myPCname' and the third one said the current owner was 'SYSTEM' I changed them all into the only one that I could pick from the list, which is my user since the 'Administrators/myPCname' wasn't exactly wrong.. could it be that they were somehow still attached to the old OS?.. the fact is I named my computer the exact same thing as it was called before installing a new windows.. so I can't really tell if its an old ownership or not. Also.. I'm currently logged in as 'myname' and I'm administrator.. now trying to delete the previously mentioned files.. it says 'you need access from 'myname' – and it can't delete.. That seems really messed up, I mean I'm logged in as the name it wants me to use. Is there maybe someway I could reset all the users on my computer? Or create some default? I don't know – I just want it to take a form I have always known, from a standard Windows point of view.

• Print job leaves queue but document isn't printed

  I'm dealing with an HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One printer. It's connected via USB to a desktop running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. If I attempt to print something like a web page or a word document, the print job will show up in the print queue and the printer would stir. By stir, I mean, it would seem to prepare itself to print. However, the print job would then leave queue (I'm thinking the computer sees it as completed) and the printer would never actually print anything. However I went into Printers and Devices under the Windows start menu, into printer properties, and print a test page, the test page would print out successfully. I attempted to uninstall and re-install the printer drivers for the printer, but the printer would continue the same behavior afterwards. I also connected the printer to another computer and the printer will print just about anything. I also checked to make sure that the computer the printer needs to be connected to was update to date as far as the OS. The machine is fully up to date. I played with the way the computer handles printer spooling. Under the printer properties, under the "Advanced" tab, I had the print job print directly to the printer. In all these instances, the same behavior continues. I've restarted the printer spooling service. I've also gone under C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and deleted files that were sitting in the folder. I have ran SFC /scannnow and the system found no errors in the system's integrity. I had the computer and printer make a cold reboot individually. The only lead I really have going for me is that since the printer prints on other PCs, I can only assume that there is something wrong with the way the PC is configured.

• Suggestions for transitioning to new GW/private network

  I am replacing a private T1 link with a new firewall device with an ipsec tunnel for a branch office. I am trying to figure out the right way to transition folks at the new site over to the new connection, so that they default to using the much faster tunnel. Existing network: 192.168.254.0/24, gw 192.168.254.253 (Cisco router plugged in to private t1) Test network I have been using with ipsec tunnel: 192.168.1.0/24, gw 192.168.1.1 (pfsense fw plugged in to public internet), also plugged in to same switch as the old network. There are probably ~20-30 network devices in the existing subnet, about 5 with static IPs. The remote endpoint is already the firewall--I can't set up redundant links to the existing subnet. In other words, as soon as I change the tunnel configuration to point to 192.168.254.0/24, all devices in the existing subnet will stop working because they point to the wrong gateway. I'd like some ability to do this slowly--such that I can move over a few clients and verify the stability of the new link before moving critical services or less tolerant users over. What's the right way to do this? Change the netmask on all of the devices to /16, and update gateway to point to the new device? Could this cause any problems? Also, how should I handle DNS? The pfsense box is not aware of my Active Directory environment. But if I change DNS to use the local servers, it will result in a huge slowdown as DNS queries will still be routed over the private t1. I need some help coming up with a plan that's not too disruptive but will really let me thoroughly test the stability of the IPSEC tunnel before I make the final switch. The AD version is 2008R2, as are the servers. Workstations are mostly Windows XP SP3. I have not configured the 192.168.1.0/24 as a site in AD sites and services.

• Can't install .NET 4.0 on Windows XP virtual machine! (VMWare Player)

  So, every time I try to install .NET Framework 4.0 on my Windows XP Professional SP3 VMWare Player virtual machine, I get a fatal error. It doesn't work with either Windows Update, the Web Installer or the normal installer! I don't know if it matters (AND I HOPE IT DOES NOT), but the host OS's Operating System drive is encrypted, and the VM HDD file resides on that partition. I don't think it matters because other programs can be installed! And downloaded!

• Apache form authentication issues

  I am trying to authenticate users through Apache using the form authentication method to restrict https requests to a certain folder. Although, regardless of whether the correct login details are provided it keeps reloading the same page except the url has the form values embedded in it instead of redirecting to the appropriate page. I need to use the form authentication type instead of basic so I can write my own html for the user to login. I am using Apache 2.4.9 and this is our current configuration. • How to monitor a Windows process' working set greater than 4GB?

  Apparently the .NET framework has a bug that prevents working set values above 2GB from accurately being determined. Between 2 and 4GB one can apply some xor-ing calculation to obtain the value, but there's no means of obtaining working set values greater than 4GB (using .Net or WMI) What method can be used - preferably from a PowerShell script - to obtain an accurate measurement of a process' working set when the working set is greater than 4GB? • moving from WinXP to WinServer in VmWare

  I have a Vmware machine for.Net application testing. Current setup: Host OS: win7 Guest OS: Right now the guest OS is Win Xp Pro x64, which runs great with just 1 gigabyte of RAM and 10 gigs of disk space. * This part can be skipped * As I said, there was a program that I needed to test, but unfortunately, by default, Vmware installs crappy display drivers(called SVGA II) on XP machines and there is NO way to upgrade them! This resulted in my program's error (the program used SlimDX (DirectX wrapper) to do some stuff..). Eventually I found out that display drivers most certainly is the problem. For example, Windows 7 virtual machine uses SVGA 3D drivers and I have NO problems running my SlimDX-based program. Now, regarding Windows Server 2008! Apparently, WDDM driver is supported by WS2008, which means that I'll be able to install SVGA 3D and to test my DX apps. * end of skip * The questions are: Will WS2008 be as smooth with just 1 gig of RAM just like Win XP was? Will 10 gigs of HDD be enough? Or the server requires more? Will I be able to install .Net ver. 4 on WS2008? Are there any limitations that I need to be aware of as a .Net programmer? EDIT: I was hoping that WS2008 is XP-based, not Vista-vased/W7-based. In comparison, W7 virtual machine with 2 gigs of RAM and 2 proc cores nearly kills my Host OS. Whereas, WinXp runs extremely fast even with 1 core and 1 gig of RAM. That's the main reason why I want to try WS2008..

• How to diagnose a spontaneous reboot?

  My computer reboots, seemingly completely at random, about once every week to two weeks but has occasionally gone months. It just goes from running fine to the POST with no error messages or anything and doesn't seem to be due to heat or usage as it's happened a couple of times when the computer has booted just a few moments ago and is idling. It's been happening for as long as I've had this computer, almost two years. It's happened in both Vista and Windows7. I strongly suspect it's a hardware problem. But due to the rareish and random nature of the crashes my normal strategy of just removing hardware until the problem stops isn't really practical. My guess would be Power Supply, Ram, or Motherboard. But I just don't know how to test an issue this random and want to figure out how to confirm which it is before I go replacing things. So is there some software or hardware that can be used to test these sorts of errors? I did run memtest86 for about 8 hours without finding any issues. And the power supply is more than capable of running my system.

  I'm a CS uni student in a country with limited bandwidth, and I find that I download files (particularly install files) for reuse\reinstallation\giving to my friends.. I've kept these files in different folders, and now find it extremely hard to find them, and keeping track of obselete files (the almost weekly releases of iTunes versions, or latest 7zip release or the .Net framework installers). What I would like to find is a file manager that could support tags, so instead of hierachical folders, i could find\view files according to their tags...

  Hello, I am interested in deploying several RHEL 4 Update 8 virtual machines for creation of a test environment. Here are the steps I am taking: In off hours, P2V/V2V the production machines and convert them to templates Deploy the virtual machines with a customization specification that changes hostname, IP address I am interested in how these processes are done and if there are any options for further customization. Are the machines brought on the network when they are powered on, before they are reconfigured? Is there a potential IP address conflict? Is there an option to run additional scripts which reside on the guest as a part of the reconfiguration? For example, restoring an Oracle Database. This is an option with Windows guests and sysprep, but I have been unable to locate anything showing a RHEL equivalent. I am dealing with a multi tier application. The main issue I am attempting to mitigate is that the application servers reference database servers by hostname and in tnsnames files. I am interested in scripting the reconfiguration of the application in the deployment so that the app/db servers are pointing to the test environment. I am OK with placing the 'cleanup' script on the source and executing it after the machine has been brought up. I am interested in the automation of the script's execution post clone/boot, as well as if there could be an IP address conflict. (cross posted to VMTN's ESX 4 community)

• In Windows 7 is there a way to login from any user account and see the same workspace and be able to use the running programs of another user?

  Our group has a number of Test Stands with PCs that are currently being accessed with a single group login. It has been sent from on high that this is not the way to do things for security reasons and we all agree. However. Multiple team members from around the world log into these Test Stands and need to be able to access programs that have been run from what would be different user profiles if we were to no longer have a single common login. Is there a way to have a common workspace such that when different users login, they will be able to see and interact with all running applications as if they were using a common login? Applications that we run link to and monopolize hardware resources connected to the PC and it is time consuming to restart and reload settings every time a new user logs in. Even if the program did not monopolize the hardware many of these programs are resource intensive and require a large portion of each machine's RAM to run, so trying to run the application again when it is already running from multiple user accounts would quickly consume all system resources. Simple Example: I open a chrome browser while logged into our pc. I then logout and another team member remotes in and should be able to see my open browser and be able to interact with it as if he were the one who opened it. Any alternative process flows or solutions from someone who has gone through a similar transition would be appreciated. This is not a request for how to give all users access to the ability to run a program, but it is the request for how to allow all users access to interact with running applications that have been started by other users and need to be interacted with as if the new user started and has control of the application.

What I cannot figure out is how to map several distinct but similarly natured input elements to the my ActionForm. Let me elaborate. • Installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on server broke WCF

  I installed .NET 3.5 SP1 on server which previously had .NET 3.0 SP2. Before install site was working perfectly. After install and subsequeny server restart, site displays but anything that makes use of the WCF service has stopped working. The exception log reports exceptions like the following when any calls are made to the client proxy: The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state. The server's application event log gave the following errors after the install: Configuration section system.serviceModel.activation already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.runtime.serialization already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. Configuration section system.serviceModel already exists in c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Config\machine.config. which seems to be inline with the fact that anything WCF related has stopped working. I am not experienced in server configurations or WCF so looking for any assistance with this. Thanks!! • Sonar Analysis crashing with default configuration in Maven

  I'm starting to experiment with Sonar, and having trouble. I'm running everything on the same Red Hat Linux server, against Java 1.6.10. I launched the server with "bin/linux-x86-32" (the JVM is 32-bit). The sonar.log shows no SEVERE or ERROR and one WARNING, that I'm using the default Derby database (I'll fix that once I get things running at all). I am trying to build a Maven project that builds a JAR. I made no Sonar-specific changes (other than one described below). I can run "mvn clean install" with no problem. However, if I then run "mvn -e sonar:sonar", I get the stacktrace listed below. The server logs no events. I added the dependency "commons-pool:commons-pool:20030825.183949, but to no avail. • Hibernate Lazy initialization exception problem with Gilead in GWT 2.0 integration

  Hello, I use GWT 2.0 as UI layer on my project. On server side, I use Hibernate. For example, this is 2 domains entities that I have : public class User { private Collection<Role> roles; @ManyToMany(cascade = CascadeType.ALL, fetch = FetchType.LAZY, mappedBy = "users", targetEntity = Role.class) public Collection<Role> getRoles() { return roles; } ... } public class Role { private Collection<User> users; @ManyToMany(cascade = CascadeType.ALL, fetch = FetchType.LAZY, targetEntity = User.class) public Collection<User> getUsers() { return users; } ... } On my DAO layer, I use UserDAO that extends HibernateDAOSupport from Spring. UserDAO has getAll method to return all of Users. And on my DAO service, I use UserService that uses userDAO to getAll of Users. So, when I get all of Users from UsersService, Users entities returned are detached from Hibernate session. For that reason, I don't want to use getRoles() method on Users instance that I get from my service. What I want is just to transfer my list of Users thanks to a RPC Service to be able to use others informations of Users in client side with GWT. Thus, my main problem is to be able to convert PersistentBag in Users.roles in simple List to be able to transfer via RPC the Users. To do that, I have seen that Gilead Framework could be a solution. In order to use Gilead, I have changed my domains entities. Now, they extend net.sf.gilead.pojo.gwt.LightEntity and they respect JavaBean specification. On server, I expose my services via RPC thanks to GwtRpcSpring framework (http://code.google.com/p/gwtrpc-spring/). This framework has an advice that makes easier Gilead integration. • Architecture choice about representation of collections in Business Objects

  I have made certain choices in my architecture which I request the community to review and comment. I am breaking up the post in smaller sections to make it easier to understand the context and then suggest/comment. I am sorry that the post is long, but is required to explain the context. What am I building A typical business application where there are application users, security roles, business operation/action rights based on roles and several business modules like Stock Receive, Stock Transfer, Sale Order, Sale Invoice, Sale Return, Stock Audit etc. and several reports. The application is a WinForm application since it has a lot of rich and responsive UI requirements and has to operate in disconnected mode (with a local SQL Server), most of the time. What have I done I have built a framework - nothing to boast about, but just a set of libraries that serves the repetative requirements of my application, e.g. authentication, role based authorization, data access, validation, exception handling, logging, change status tracking, presentation model compliance and reasonable loose coupling between components. No, I have not written everything from scratch, you can say I have consolidated many things together like some concepts from CSLA, Martin Fowler for Presentation Model, blocks from Enterprise Library, Unity etc. to build a set of libraries that will help my developers be productive quickly without having to look up Google for many of the technical requirements. I have tried to keep the framework generic so that it can be used in typical business applications and also tried to follow some best practices that will support the same Business Objects to be used in an ASP.NET MVC environment also. My present architecture serves my objectives well, and have built several modules (on WinForm) without much trouble. The architecture also lent itself well to build some usable prototype on ASP.NET MVC with the same set of business objects, without changing a single line of code. My Dilemma I have used Custom Business Objects since that gives me a clearer OOP representation of the problem scope in my solution scope, and helps me visualize my entire solution as collection of objects with data and behavior rather than having a set of relational data (DataSet) and implement behaviours (business logic, validation) etc. separately. With rich databinding support in .NET 2.0 binding Custom Business Objects to UI was a breeze. Now while building my business objects, I am still in a dilemma about representation of collections in business objects. Currently I am using DataSets to represent collections while I have seen many suggestions to implement custom collections. For example, in my vision, a typical Sale Invoice Object will contain 'Sales Invoice Items' as a collection. Now theoritically, I can accept that the each 'Sales Invoice Item' should have its own behavior along with their data (ItemCode, Name, Qty, Price etc.) but typically managing of Sale Invoice Items in a Sale Invoice is handled by the Sale Invoice Object itself, e.g. adding/removing Items from collection. Additionally, we can also put business logic/rules for the Sales Invoice Items like "Qty should not be greater than the ordered qty", "Price should be max 10% above the price in Sale Order" etc. in the Sale Invoice object itself. With that kind of a vision, I felt that most business object child collections can be managed by the parent itself, including add/remove from collection as well and implementing business logic for the collection items, hence the collection items hold nothing but data. Additionally, typical collections are represented in UI in Grids, where ability to support DataBinding becomes very important for any collection. Implementing a custom collection, in that case would also mean, I have to implement robust DataBinding support as well, for the collection, which is of course time consuming. Now, considering child collection behaviors are implemented in the parent and the need for DataBinding of child collections, I chose DataSet to represent any child collection in my business objects. In the above example of Sale Invoice I will have 'Invoice Number', 'Date', 'Customer' etc. as attributes of the 'Sale Invoice' but 'InvoiceItems' as a DataSet. Of course, when I say DataSet, it is not a vanilla dataset but an extended DataSet that supports business rule validation and the same role based security model of my framework to allow/deny any business operation to rows/columns of the DataSet, automatically. This approach has allowed easier collection management and databinding in my business objects and my developers are able to deliver modules rapidly. Questions Do you feel that the approach is reasonable? Do you see any shortcomings of this approach? I am recently thinking of using 'Typed DataSets' as child collections, for easier representation in code, that will allow me to write 'currentInvoice.InvoiceItems' (for the DataTable) and 'invoiceItem.ProductCode' or 'invoiceItem.Qty', instead of 'drow["ProductCode"].ToString()' or '(int)drow["Qty"]' etc. Does this choice have any demerits? • Custom rails route problem with 2.3.8 and Mongrel

  I have a controller called 'exposures' which I created automatically with the script/generate scaffold call. The scaffold pages work fine. I created a custom action called 'test' in the exposures controller. When I try to call the page (http://127.0.0.1:3000/exposures/test/1) I get a blank, white screen with no text at all in the source. I am using Rails 2.3.8 and mongrel in the development environment. There are no entries in development.log and the console that was used to open mongrel has the following error: You might have expected an instance of Array.
