• Can I use a 27" iMac as a additional monitor for another 27" iMac?

  I currently have a 27" iMac i7 with the 512mb ATI card. After looking at prices on other Apple displays it appears I can purchase another low-end 27" iMac (Core 2 Duo basic model) for less than a 30" display. 3 Part question: Can I easily use the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor to my higher end iMac? While I am using the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor can I still take advantage of its CPU to do things like run a webserver, compress video with Handbrake, etc? Are there any other 27" LCD displays with the same resolution (2560 x 1440) cheaper than the basic iMac (~$1699.00 US)? Any insights appreciated.

  Is Mac OS X developed on a licensed Unix or is it a Unix-like clone that, unlike Linux, conforms to Unix specification well enough to be registered as a Unix OS. Not until Leopard, Mac OS X did not gain the Unix certification. But in Leopard, Terminal still print: GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin10.0) But GNU is GNU's not Unix, and Mac OS X is registered as Unix. That gets me confused whether OS X is unix or unix-like. In other words, is OS X written on top of Unix or a re-write of Unix that is as Unix as it can possible be.   We have test tools that require us to call SIP addresses like localhost:5061. I used to use SJPhone on Windows XP, and an older version of X-lite, which both worked fine, and didn't require the SIP phone to be registered with a SIP proxy. I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and SJPhone doesn't seem to work any more (see forum here for others with the problem) - it says "No sound input device / No sound output device" at startup. I have tried a range of other softphones (X-lite 3, X-lite 4, Zoiper, 3CX), but I can't seem to find any that will install on Windows 7 and will let me call a SIP address like localhost:5061. It might be that I just don't know how to configure these phones to do it...

  I wasn't experienced any problems before installing kb980408 for Windows 7 x86. The update made it impossible for me to log into my computer after displaying a "Setting up personalized settings for Windows Desktop Update" message, after killing that task a "Windows Explorer is not responding - Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" message appears, then it waits forever... If I killed that task, I was not able to continue the boot process, if I ran explore.exe manually, the same thing happens. The solution, by the way, was to boot into safe mode and use the add/remove program in the control panel to uninstall this wretched piece of code. Start-up repair and/or the use of system restore will not help you, you need to uninstall.

  I am displaying different content depending on how the user is holding his/her phone using the onorientationchange call in the body tag. This works great - I hide one div while making the other visible. The div in portrait mode looks great on first load. I use this to get the right scale/zoom: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0;" /> Even if the content in portrait mode run over, the width is correct and the user can scroll down. The display in landscape mode is perfect too. However, if content in landscape mode requires the user the scroll down, then when the user returns to portrait mode, the screen is "zoomed out" so to speak. This happens whether or not the user scrolled down while in landscape mode. I've tried many different things to try to get the scale/zoom/width of the screen right, but no luck. Is there any way to do this? Thanks in advance!

  I was too cheap to hire someone to retype a really, really long scanned document full of legalese. So I OCRed it using OmniPage. But the OCR output was kind of disappointing. I got a word doc that has multiple line spacings. The before and after paragraph heights are different all over the place. This would be easy, if the entire document had the same paragraph settings, but it does not. There are probably a half dozen different styles going on. What is the easiest way to normalize the document? For instance, if one paragraph has a line spacing of 20.4 pt and another one has a spacing of 20.9 pt, then I'd like to consider them the same style and set them to a single value? Or really, any suggestion is welcome at this point.

  I hope this question doesn't get closed at once :) I have an old laptop, a Compaq NC4200, which is going its final laps around the track these days. Battery is dead, and everything kinda runs slow. It also has only 1GB of memory, and even though I don't know if it can take more, I probably wouldn't be able to get hold of any that matches without having to special order it. The size, however, has been ideal for my usage pattern, so I'm looking to replace it with a similarly sized laptop, at least in the same size category. However, it's been a while since I tried keeping track of CPUs, so I have a question. The old laptop has a Intel Pentium M 760 1.86GHz processor. One laptop I found online has a Intel Pentium SU4100 1.3GHz dual-core. This type of processor seems to be quite common in the price and size-range I've been looking. What kind of relative performance boost could I expect from the old one to the new one? I am not expecting a "about 7.45x speed", but some indication would be nice. For instance, dual-core tells me it might be akin to 2.6GHz, but I assume I can't simply compare 1.86GHz to 2.6GHz and expect the new one to run about 1.4x as fast, I expect more these days. Or is that unrealistic for this kind of processor? Do I need to up my price range and go for a 2+ GHz processor?

  I'm running a Synergy server on Ubuntu and a Synergy+ client on OSX. The server has a standard windows keyboard with shift, ctrl, windows, and alt keys. My MacBookPro has shift, fn, control, alt/option, and command keys. When I press ctrl-c, ctrl-v, etc, the appropriate copy/paste action doesn't happen on the Mac, but it does in Ubuntu. If I'm controlling the mac, and press alt-c, alt-v, then I get the copy/paste action. So I played around with key mapping in synergy.conf and found that the following allows me to do copy/paste with ctrl-c/ctrl-v: section: screens godzilla: mbp.local: ctrl = alt alt = ctrl end Is this all that I need to do? Or are there other mappings that will help as well? The synergy configuration page refers to the following key mappings. What are the equivalent keys for each of these on the Windows keyboard and Mac keyboard? • Unable to delete a file using bash script

  I'm having problems removing a file in a bash script. I saw the other post with the same problem but none of those solutions solved my problem. The bash script is an OP5 surveillance check and it calls an Expect process that saves a temporary file to the local drive which the bash script reads from. Once it has read the file and checked its status I would like to remove the temporary file. I'm pretty new to scripting so my script may not be as optimal as it can be. Either way it does the job except removing the file once it's done.   Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result ! • Windows 7 Not Recognizing Any Hardware, Linux Recognizing Hardware

  I have a new desktop computer with two SSDs: one running Linux Mint 15 (SSD1), the other running Windows 7 (SSD2). My mint runs perfectly - USB wireless adapter is recognized, SSD2 (connected by SATA) is recognized and accessible through the filesystem, Ethernet works, etc. However, my Windows 7 is not recognizing any of these devices - even plugging in a regular ethernet cable doesn't work. It seems that it's not recognizing any network adapters, and it also doesn't recognize SSD1, connected to the mainboard by SATA. I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled Windows multiple times, but the problem persists. I used the Windows 7 CD to install Windows on a machine previously, and that time around, I didn't have any problems, which leads me to suspect that this might be a hardware issue, specifically with the mainboard. My mainboard is an MSI-7641 model, the 760GM-P34 FX. It uses an AMD Chipset and an AMD processor. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to fix it?

  I have the following PHP script: <?php $fortune = `fortune`; echo $fortune; ?> but the output is simply blank (no visible errors thrown). However, if I run php -a, it works: php > echo `fortune`; Be careful of reading health books, you might die of a misprint. -- Mark Twain php > Am I missing a config directive or something that would cause this? Edit: So, I tried running my script using $ php-cgi fortunetest.php and it worked as expected. Maybe the issue is with Apache2?
