• How to use a servlet to repsond to a request for an object

  I'm sure this is easy, but I don't work with website development very often and I'm lost on this one. I have a web application that needs to support multiple clients with different settings, icons and other content. The contents of these files are in separate directories for each client. What I would like to do is respond to a request sent to a jsp/java servlet. The servlet will look up the proper folder location in a database (I have the database stuff working) and send the actual object to the requesting page whether it is xml, graphic or video. How do I do that? What methods should I be using. Help I'm lost! :(

• Diamonds with question marks

  Hi, I'm getting these little diamonds with question marks in them in my HTML attributes when I present data from my database. I'm using EPiServer and a few custom properties. This is the information I've gathered, I save my data as a XML document, since I use custom EPiServer properties which need more than one defined value. This is saved as UTF8. It's only attributes in element tags which have this problem, such as align=left becomes align=?left?. There is no " character there, but I get the diamonds anyway. If I use " outside an element, it works and shows correctly. Any clues?

• Maven 2: How to package current project version in a WAR file?

  I am using Maven 2 to build my Java project and I am looking for a way to present the current version number of the pom.xml to the user (using a Servlet or JSP for example). As far as I can see, the best way would be that Maven packages the version number as a text file into the WAR. This allows me to read the version from that file and present it the way I want. Does anyone know of a plugin that can do something like that for me? Maybe the WAR plugin can be configured to do so? Or maybe using some other approach all together?

  Hi, I'm trying to design a simple Cocoa application and I would like to have a clear and easy to understand software architecture. Of course, I'm using a basic MVC design and my question concerns the Model layer. For my application, the Model represents data fetched on the Internet with a XML-RPC API. I'm planning to use Core Data to represent a locally fetched version. How should the data be loaded initially? I'm reading the Cocoa Design Pattern book, and they talk about a Model-Controller that is centric to the Model. How would that be done? Thanks!

  Hey everyone, If my table looks like this: id | colA | colB | colC =========================== 1 | red | blue | yellow 2 | orange | red | red 3 | orange | blue | cyan What SELECT query do I run such that the results returned are: blue, cyan, orange, red, yellow Basically, I want to extract a collective list of distinct values across multiple columns and return them in alphabetical order. I am not concerned with performance optimization, because the results are being parsed to an XML file that will serve as a cache (database is hardly updated). So even a dirty solution would be fine. • Hibernate without primary keys generated by db?

  I'm building a data warehouse and want to use InfiniDB as the storage engine. However, it doesn't allow primary keys or foreign key constraints (or any constraints for that matter). Hibernate complains "The database returned no natively generated identity value" when I perform an insert. Each table is relational, and contains a unique integer column that was previously used as the primary key - I want to keep that, but just not have the constraint in the db that the column is the primary key. I'm assuming the problem is that Hibernate expects the db to return a generated key. • ASP.Net Treeview - Client side event handling (jQuery??)

  I have a Treeview (bog standard ASP.Net Treeview) that is bound to an Xml source which allows the user to navigate to various parts of our system. Nothing special.... However, I wanted to generate a breadcrumb for use in the main content area on the client side when the user clicks a node in the Treeview control. I know there are mechanisms available for breadcrumb generation (such as site maps) but for various reasons I need to do it when a node is clicked. So far hooking up a click event using the document ready function available as part of jQuery is easy. However, having spent sometime looking I can not see how I navigate back up the tree nodes to get to each parent nodes text value to build the breadcrumb. I have been playing with .parent(), .parents() and .closest() available via jQuery but don't seem to be getting anywhere. Has anyone done anything like this or can anyone provide a better method? Thanks in advance....

• httpOnly Session Cookie + Servlet 3.0 (e.g. Glassfish v3)

  By default, Glassfish v3 doesn't set the httpOnly flag on session cookies (when created as usual with request.getSession()). I know, there is a method javax.servlet.SessionCookieConfig.setHttpOnly(), but I'm not sure, if that's the best way to do it, and if yes, where the best place would be to put that line. BTW, of course it can't be done in the servlet itself (e.g. in init()): java.lang.IllegalStateException: PWC1426: Unable to configure httpOnly session tracking cookie property for servlet context /..., because this servlet context has already been initialized Generally, I would prefer to use a configuration option e.g. in web.xml.

• can Yahoo and Hotmail contacts api be used without leaving the site?

  I might be missing something but I'm trying to implement a contacts retrieval mechanism akin to the one that is offered by Google for Yahoo and Hotmail. Both APIs seem to require the user to actually go to their sites to log in. The documentation is really convoluted for both. I was hoping someone has done this and can point me to a simple way (if there is one) to allow the user to log in directly in my app and then for me to go and fetch their contacts for them (preferably in XML, but JSON would also do nicely). I currently have a Perl script that goes and gets the gmail stuff and works very nicely. I was (maybe wildly optimistically) hoping that Yahoo and Microsoft would have similarly useful mechanisms.

  I have a resource that looks something like this: /users/{id}/summary?format={format} When format is "xml" or "json" I respond with a user summary object that gets automagically encoded by WCF - fine so far. But when format equals "pdf", I want my response to consist of a trivial HTTP response body and a PDF file attachment. How is this done? Hacking on WebOperationContext.Current.OutgoingResponse doesn't seem to work, and wouldn't be the right thing even if it did. Including the bits of the file in a CDATA section or something in the response isn't safe. Should I create a subclass of Message, then provide a custom IDispatchMessageFormatter that responds with it? I went a short distance down that path but ultimately found the documentation opaque. What's the right thing?

• Good open source analytics/stats software in PHP?

  The url shortening service I'm building needs to display some basic click stats to users: # of clicks, conversions, referring domains, and country (filterable by a date range). I'll possibly want more advanced stats in the future. Is there existing open source software that will allow me to pass events to it and then easily display a bar or line graph of that event (for example, a line graph of "conversions" between two specified dates). It seems like something like this should exist and would be much easier then building the whole thing from scratch. I know there are graphing scripts, but that still requires me to format the data (usually as an xml file) and then pass it to the graph. I'm looking for something a bit more complete, which I can just feed the events and then it does everything else.

• With Maven2, how would I specify a custom directory to which a dependency should be copied?

  Basically, I have a multi-module project consisting of 5 different modules. One of the modules is kind of the parent module to the other 4, meaning the other 4 need to be built before the 5th, so you could say that each of the 4 modules is a dependency of the 5th. Thus, I've made dependency entries for each of the modules in the 5th module's pom.xml. However, when I build the project, I don't want those 4 dependencies copied to the "lib" directory of the 5th module. I'd like to specify the directory into which each of them should be placed explicitly. Is there any way to do this with Maven2? Thanks for your help, B.J.

  We have Tomcat 6 connecting to a Win2k3 Server running AD. We want ANY user under Security Groups OU to have access to the application and not just the CN. Tomcat does not search OU's and it just searches CN's in our case. How do we configure our settings so we can do OU level authorization and not just CN level ? thanks Mat

  Hi, my app involves some work with the camera, therefore it needs to handle capturing of images with different resolution. My targets are 1.6 - onwards. Does anyone know what to pass in the value argument for Camera.Parameters.set("picture-size", value) I have look at the Donut release of the Camera app, however, it was not very clear what exactly has been used there as the value is retrieved from the SharedPreferences. // Set picture size parameter. String pictureSize = mPreferences.getString(CameraSettings.KEY_PICTURE_SIZE, getString(R.string.pref_camera_picturesize_default)); mParameters.set(PARM_PICTURE_SIZE, pictureSize); Lookin at the strings.xml I can see that R.string.pref_camera_picturesize_default = 2048x1536, however, I'm not sure what other values can be passed there? • Edit PDF online and save and form data to server

  Hello, I have some PDF documents which are being displayed in the browser, with some fields already being pre-populated from the database using iTextSharp (we are running Windows Server 2008, IIS 7, SQL Server 2008, and ASP.NET 2.0/2.5 with C#). Our clients need to be able to fill in the remaining fields and save the PDF to the server. I have considered the following possibilities: 1.) Somehow using iTextSharp to parse the form fields, grab all the form data and save it to the database on submit. 2.) Adding a submit button to the PDF itself using LiveCycle with some sort of JS click event to save the FDF/XFDF/XDP/XML data either to the database or to a flat file on the server. I am currently unsure as to what the best approach would be, what would work, or how to implement any of these possible solutions, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I want some basic features such as : Ability to Write Loops (with any IEnumerable) Passing Variables Passing Templates Files (main template, footer, header) I'll use this to generate reports in HTML and XML. I'm not looking for a ASP.NET Template Engine. This is for a WinForms applications.
