  • KeePass: use a key file or a regular password?

    I'm setting up a KeePass database and it offers the ability to use a key file, which it says is more secure because it can use a longer and more complex password but is easier to break because you only need the key file to open the database. I'll only be using the key file on 2 computers (one desktop and one laptop), wo which is the best option? Note that it's definitely more appealing to use the key file for me because i have a hard time remembering anything close to a random password.

  • Which keyboard has better ergomics?

    When I was a kid I fell hard on my right wrist and since then I always get wrist pains when angling my wrist very high up (ie: when using a very high shaped mouse or doing push ups). So I have narrowed down my choices for a keyboard to the following 2: Microsoft Natural 4000: And the Razer Arctosa: The Razer is a slim type keyboard similar to a laptop feel and the hand-rest would help with keeping my hands straight with respect to my forearms. I am more inclined on getting the razer but am not sure if this will benefit my wrists in the long run. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to open semicolon delimited CSV-files in US-version of Excel

    When I double-click on a .csv file, it is opened in Excel. The csv-files have columns delimited with semicolons (not commas, but also a valid format). Using a German Windows/Excel setup, the opened file is displayed correctly, the columns are separated where the semicolons existed in the csv-file. But when I do the same on an (US-) English Windows/Excel setup, only one column is imported, showing the whole data including the semicolons in the first column. (I don't have an English setup available for tests, users have reported the behavior) I tried to change the list separator value in Windows regional settings, but that didn't change anything. What can I do to be able to double-click-open those CSV-files on an English setup? EDIT: It seems to be the best solution not to rely on CSV-files in this case. I was hoping that there is some formatting for CSV-files that makes it possible to use them internationally. The best solution seems that I'll switch to creating XLS-files.   • Why Can't SSMS Access The Documents Folder in Windows 7?

    I have a database backup located in my Windows 7 Documents folder (c:\Users\Aaron\Documents...), and I'm trying to restore it using SQL Server Management Studio. However, the program is unable to access anything within the Users\Aaron directory using its non-standard file selection dialog, even when run as an Administrator. I'm brand new to Windows 7... Is there some sort of security setting that I need to trigger to give programs access to these files?

    I have a domain controller running on Windows 2008 Server R2 and users login to application servers on which Windows 2003 Server SP2 is installed. I have applied a Group Policy to clean temporary internet files on exit i.e to delete all temporary internet files when users close the browser. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage. How can i enforce automatic deletion of temporary internet files?

Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags.   • How to enabled Printer Sharing on Web Server 2008?

    I am installing Web Server 2008 for my home network. I have 2 USB printers that I am connecting to this machine and want to share these printers so that my other machines can print to these 2 USB printers. (I previously had Win Server 2003 on this machine and was able to share both printers fine.) File and Printer sharing Inbound Role for my Private network is enabled, when I go into Network and Sharing Center and try to turn ON Printer Sharing, it never sticks. It always stays on OFF. I go to my installed printers and try to Share them and get the following error message: Printer Settings could not be saved. Remote connections to the Print Spooler are blocked by a policy set on your machine. I have not been able to find a policy on my machine that is preventing this. I have searched a lot over the past few days and most of the results say what I have done should work and there are also a number of search results that say Printer Sharing on Web Server 2008 is not allowed and you have to hack it. Has anyone installed Web Server 2008 and shared printers before? If so, what are the detailed steps you took to get this to work?

  • Windows 7 VPN Error 619

    So I am running Windows 7 Enterprise. This morning I was able to VPN using the built in VPN (Connect to Work Network etc). I had to change my network's IP address range and now the VPN will not work. It just stalls on the Verifying user name and password... message. But then it returns the 619 error. Anybody know why changing my machine's IP address would cause this problem? Where should I be looking to try and fix this issue? I have tried this on a Windows XP machine that also had the IP address range change and this still connects fine using exactly the same connection details. EDIT The internal network range changed from 192.x.x.x to 10.x.x.x. This was done on the entire Active Directory. All machines are running fine and the Windows XP machine, that works going to the same client VPN mentioned above is on the same network. Both the XP and the Win 7 machines are using DHCP served by the Domain Controller. The client domain is not performing any IP range checks/restrictions. The VPN is outside the internal network, connection is being made via the Internet and not passing through any other machine, other than the normal domain machines, ie DNS etc. This is passing through a router and the router has the relevant VPN passthrough options configured. All internal machines are working correctly with other forms of VPN, ie Cisco, Sonic etc (these were tested on other machines, they are not installed on the Vista or Win7 machines). After further testing, this is occurring on all Win7 and Vista machines where they can no longer connect to the client VPN, however all XP machines can still connect fine. This has been tested on three Vista, two Win7 and five XP machines. All machines are on DHCP and tests have been done with both the firewalls turned on and off, as well as with fixed IPs being used.   • router only assigns small number of IPs

    Been having a problem with my router for a while now, might just be because it is really old but here's the problem: If a lot of computers are connected to my home network someone will get disconnected. They are assigned IPs and it seems like at a certain point (and I don't know how many) you either get assigned the same IP as someone else or something else is happening and you get disconnected - until i soft reset it and it works again which takes 30 secs. I'd say my tablet, my PC, my sisters iPad, 2 laptops and a netbook is the most that can be connected at one time so that is 6 but that should be fine. The only way I know this is the problem is because I turned on my tablet and I was online on my PC, got disconnected but my tablet was still connected, this is just after i turned the tablet on so I know my router is having difficulty with IPs, it is like it assigned the same IP to the tablet which then clashed with my desktop and knocked me off. I see that sometimes the following solves it as well so I wrote a batch file with a menu to execute these commands as I have to do it so often. ipconfig /release ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /renew Any ideas? Or shall I just get a new router as this one is old and maybe can't handle giving out that many IPs? Cheers!

  • Linux and GEForge 8400 dual monitor

    I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GEForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with fedora 12 and ubuntu 9.1 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on ubuntu, it simply hang up during the boot. With fedora I get this erro: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Have I to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).

  • Can't access certain web sites - reset router, any ideas?

    EDIT: This problem was resolved by my ISP - had to do with damaged fiber in one of their locations. Thanks to everyone that helped. Not sure if this is the right site (I'm a StackOverflow user) so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm having trouble connecting to certain sites on any of the 3 machines that are on my LAN. The following sites are returning "Problem Loading Page - The connection has timed out" Sourceforge.net CNet.com Microsoft.com OpenDNS.com even my company's webiste I was worried about possible malware/virus, but I don't think that is the case (given the inability to access my company's site and the fact that all 3 machines are having the same issues.) I've tried with IE8, FF, and Chrome I have reset my router (WRT54G) and my machine(s) multiple times. EDIT: It is also worth noting that this page spins constantly and no avatars show up (I'm assuming it is trying to access gravatar.com with no success.) EDIT: I have the same issues directly connected to the modem. So, any router config is probably not the issue I'm a programmer, not a network guy - any ideas?

  • Changing linksys router configuration from command-line

    I am constantly logged into (ssh'd) my home machine (ubuntu) from various remote locations. Sometimes I would like to change my home linksys router settings (change the port forwarding settings or disable/enable wireless, things like that). When I try and use the links2 text browser, there isn't much I can do because the tab titles don't show up (presumably because they are pictures?). Is there another way of configuring a linksys router from a command line? I guess my only other option is to set up a proxy on my home machine and use a browser connected to that proxy to configure it, but I would think there might be a non-browser way of doing it. Thanks

  • XP SP2 Event log not logging events

    I have a problem whereby a terminal appears not to be logging events correctly and occasionally appears to have problems communicating accross the network.The terminal has previously been infected with a virus which apears to have 'played' with the default group policy in the standard user profile. Although, outwardly, the terminal appears to be working normally I still have a nagging feeling that it isn't quite back to the way it was. It was infected by a user plugging in a USB Stick while the company was using the older version of the AV software...typically a week or so before it was updated.I have configured the Event logs to Overwrite as required and to be 5056KB in Maximum size. I have also attempted:- Disabling the Event Log service & restarting Renewing the EVT files in Windows\system32\config directory Restarting the event log service and restarting Clearing the event log in the Services MMC Resetting the Filters to Default in the services MMC Using the EVENTCREATE command remotely from a CMD window on the server to force an event creation event. So far the only operation to have any sort of success is the remote computer EVENTCREATE command from a CMD window on the server. As it stands, the only other time that the computer has managed to create events is while it is being restarted.Has anyone gotany ideas on how to proceed? I'm thinking that possibly a refresh of the 'Windows\system32\config\SystemProfile' folder. I'm also thinking about running a tool such as Malwarebytes but this could be slightly controvertial as the system needs to be running on 'up-time' for as long as possible. I'm also wonderign whether anyone knows of any Windows admin tools that allow me to control the event logging options or default security options so that i could get it back to some sort of standard.What I'm trying to avoid is a complte re-imaging of the terminal. Although this is an option, I dont really want to have to take it if i dont need to.Many thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone may be able to provide.

  • Why has Google toolbar has stopped working in Firefox 3.6.8?

    Yesterday, I noticed that my Google Toolbar has stopped working. The toolbar is still there, but it is completely blank (no buttons or input fields, just a gray strip of nothing). In addition to this, tooltips have stopped working. If I disable the toolbar, the tooltips return to normal, so that particular problem definitely seems to be a side effect of the toolbar. I tried disabling all my other add-ons, but that made no difference. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Toolbar. That made no difference. I haven't tried reinstalling the browser, but I'm reluctant to do that unless absolutely necessary. Am I the only one having this problem? Any ideas how to fix? Note: I'm running Windows XP SP3. I'm using Google Toolbar version 7.1.20100723W.

  • iPhone Lag Terrible - SLOW - What's going on with the iPhone OS?

    I've had my iPhone 3G for about a year now, and it seems like at least once a month, it gets bogged down and gets slower and slower - horrible lag when typing, going back to the home screen or opening an app can take 20 seconds. Has anyone else run into this and found "the" solution. What you always read on other boards is to reboot the handset (hold down home and the power button), but that doesn't improve anything for me. I've reinstalled the OS like 5 times now, and I'm getting pretty sick of doing it so often. And I don't buy that it's a hardware issue really, since it works fine for weeks after a fresh install. Anyone have a solution or an idea of what specific actions cause this kind of evident data corruption (OS corruption?) and slowness? Note - I'm looking for specific things here. That is, has anyone done the research to see exactly what on the phone operating system is getting messed up that causes this lag (which is discussed all over the internet, with no working solutions). I don't own a mac, so I can't delve into the guts of the iPhone very well to see what's up with it... Some additional info: Reboots (hold down power/home) and "Sleeps" (slide off) do nothing. Only fresh re-installs help I only have about 15 apps installed - sometimes you see the answer to uninstall apps if you have too many, I'd hope that 15 isn't too many, and even when I've had none installed, it still gets hung up after a period of time. This phone is not jailbroken, and it is running the 3.0.1 release.

I have found in some sites that the solution is to rename *10_linux* into *50_linux*, however if I do this, whenever I reboot my computer, the memtest starts (so I have to reset the previous grub configuration through a live cd). I am aware that it might be a silly question, but does anyone have a workaround?
