  • How can I find out a file's path in the text encoding used by PosteRazor?

    - by ændrük
PosteRazor uses an apparently outdated GUI that is incapable of properly displaying my filenames: For the sake of convenience, I want to be able to open any file in PosteRazor by copying and pasting its path from Nautilus. This works in other applications, but sadly, PosteRazor in unable to understand the path: How can I convert the path that Nautilus generates into a text encoding that is compatible with PosteRazor?

  • Using local repository with vmbuilder and https

    - by Onitlikesonic
I seem to be having problems using vmbuilder with a local https mirror "--mirror=https:///archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/" as shown below: Process (['/usr/sbin/debootstrap', '--arch=amd64', 'precise', '/tmp/tmpYc0cOktmpfs', '<my_internal_server>/ubuntu/']) returned 1. stdout: I: Retrieving Release E: Failed getting release file <my_internal_server>/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release , stderr: 2012-10-18 10:36:36,429 INFO : Unmounting tmpfs from /tmp/tmpYc0cOktmpfs Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/vmbuilder", line 24, in <module> cli.main() File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/contrib/cli.py", line 216, in main distro.build_chroot() File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/distro.py", line 83, in build_chroot self.call_hooks('bootstrap') File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/distro.py", line 67, in call_hooks call_hooks(self, *args, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/util.py", line 165, in call_hooks getattr(context, func, log_no_such_method)(*args, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/distro.py", line 136, in bootstrap self.suite.debootstrap() File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/dapper.py", line 269, in debootstrap run_cmd(*cmd, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/util.py", line 120, in run_cmd raise VMBuilderException, "Process (%s) returned %d. stdout: %s, stderr: %s" % (args.__repr__(), status, mystdout.buf, mystderr.buf) VMBuilder.exception.VMBuilderException: Process (['/usr/sbin/debootstrap', '--arch=amd64', 'precise', '/tmp/tmpYc0cOktmpfs', '<my_internal_server>/ubuntu/']) returned 1. stdout: I: Retrieving Release E: Failed getting release file <my_internal_server>/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release , stderr: I've checked that the files are in the correct place and i'm able to setup this using http instead of https. However this server will be providing https access only to the repos, the http is only temporarily open. This might be due to the certificate not being valid on the https (since it's self signed) or due to the fact that vmbuilder doesn't support https? In either case how can i get this to work? (If it's the case of the invalid certificate I don't mind ignoring any checks)

  • Is DevCon.exe still the best way to restart/power cycle USB ports after resuming from hibernation in

    - by ProfessionalAmateur
I have a USB broadband card on my Windows 7 laptop. It loathes resuming from hibernation properly. Back in the XP days I would issue a call devcon.exe from the command prompt and restart the selected ports (Saves you having to manually unplug and plug back in your USB devices). Ive been trying this is Windows 7, but the UAC keeps getting in the way. I'll start a command prompt. Issue the devcon command, but UAC asks me if I really want to do this, when I click yes it opens a different command prompt and launches the command. After the command completed this new prompt window closes faster than the speed of light and I cannot see the results. So Im thinking there has to be a better way to do this in the Vista/Win7 world...?

  • Restore Failure from Ubuntu One

    - by Qawi Robinson
Had to do a reinstall of Ubuntu 12 after 13.10 failed. Lost all my data, but I remembered that I had data backed up to Ubuntu One. It recognized my previous backups but I got errors and a restore failure when I went to restore the data. This is what I got. Can anyone make heads or tails of this? I still don't have my data. • How do you splice out a part of an xvid encoded avi file, with ffmpeg? (no problems with other files

    - by yegor
Im using the following command, which works for most files, except what seems to be xvid encoded ones /usr/bin/ffmpeg -sameq -i file.avi -ss 00:01:00 -t 00:00:30 -ac 2 -r 25 -copyts output.avi So this should basically splice out 30 seconds of video + audio, starting from 1 minute mark. It does START encoding at the 00:01:00 mark but it goes all the way to the end of the file for some reason, ignoring that I want just 30 seconds. The output looks like this. • How to rsync a large file, with as little CPU and bandwidth expense as possible?

    - by Johan Allgoth
I have a 500 GB file that I plan on backing up remotely. The file changes often. I'll be rsyncing it from a desktop to a server. Both can run rsync client or server. What is the proper command for this? The ones I've tried sofar has been taking forever or simply acted strange. Example and results: rsync -cv --partial --inplace --no-whole-file /desktop/file1 myserver.com::module/file1 Seems to work, but only if I do it twice (?!). Also, slow. Does the above command do the checksumming on both computers, or only on the sending one? Is it correct otherwise?

  • How can I write byte[] to socket outputstream and specify the end of file?

    - by Christopher Francisco
I've googled 2 days straight and I can't find how to do this. I have an open stream between client and server, and client will send a JSON string (encrypted to bytes) to the server each 3 to 5 seconds. How can I write to the Socket OutputStream so that I can read each JSON string in the server. I'm guessing I need to specify some kind of end of file or something, but can't find any info on how to achieve this.

  • sudoers - simple explanation requested

    - by Redsandro
Everytime I want to be able to run something that requires me to be a sudoer too many times, I need to google for the formatting of /etc/sudoers to remind me again what exactly is the proper way to write it. Now I see different writing styles in my sudoers file, which is the consequence of different google results over the months. I've also noticed that the second example (below) seems to work in XFCE, but not in Cinnamon (Gnome 3). This could be totally unrelated, but nontheless I'd like to know once and for all, what is the correct grammar of the sudoer line, and what is the difference between the given examples? redsandro ALL=NOPASSWD:/path/to/command redsandro ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:/path/to/command redsandro ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD:/path/to/command Also, what are all the ALL's for? One user, one command, yet I need to use the ALL keyword up to three times? Am I doing this wrong? Of course, omitting NOPASSWD: makes you enter your password before you are permitted to run the command, but one point of confusion is the usage of = and :, for the final command that is the subject of the line can be prepended by either =, :, , or ), confusing grammar for similar semantics.

  • bash terminal/console strange overlapping behavior

    - by UpKey
I am using gnome-terminal in Ubuntu 11.10 and seem to get long lines overlapping in the terminal window. When I copy a long command line and paste it into the terminal, the text gets overlapped to the start of the line and often covers the user prompt. If I resize the terminal window, making it wider the overlapping gets undone and everything looks normal. In previous versions of Ubuntu, if a line was too long it would continue on the next line below. Another problem I have noticed that may be related, is when using the up arrow key to show previously typed commands, sometimes instead of the output command line being replaced by the previous command each time the key is pressed, the lines get partially merged. A portion of the old line remains, and the next command gets joined onto the end. This leftover part of a command is persistent and does not get replaced next time the key is pressed, although the insertion point or blinking cursor is at the end of the latest recalled command, and the leftover has no effect if I press enter. Is this problem a bug or some setting that needs fixing? Where do I look for the cause? keyboard? gnome-terminal? bash? Thank you for any help or suggestions offered

  • Where can I get the Natty kernel .config file?

    - by Oli
I'm using Maverick with the latest available kernels on kernel.org and building them myself. Until now I've been basing my configuration off the stock Maverick kernel and accepting the make oldconfig defaults. I've been doing this for 3 major releases now so I figure I'm starting to slip behind the current "standard". I would like to re-base my kernels off the new Natty .config file. Is this available somewhere online or do I have to download the whole kernel package and extract it?

  • Create/rename a file/folder that begins with a dot in Windows?

    - by Adventure10
Many programs needs folder names that starts with a dot, like .emacs.d, .gimp-2.2, .jedit etc. How do I create such a folder? When using the Windows Explorer in Windows 2000 (and other versions), I get an error message saying "You have to enter a filename". The only solution I have come up with, is to open a command prompt (Start, Run, "CMD", OK) and enter "mkdir .mydir". Why have Microsoft this error message in the Explorer, but not in the command shell? Is there any registry hack out there to fix this, so that I am able to enter the folder name directly in the Explorer?

  • Why am I getting such slow file transfer performance?

    - by kingdango
Copying 4GB from a USB flash drive to my Linux partition. The flash drive is NTFS formatted (I believe, it's Windows formatted). The transfer is incredibly slow and blocks the computer frequently causing lag and hanging applications. My transfer rate is 1.2 MB/sec and that is the max it has hit when I let the File Operations window have focus. Why is this so slow under Ubuntu and significantly faster in Win 7?

  • Which VCS is efficient for storing small changes to big text files?

    - by MiguelM
A government agency publishes a text file with thousands of records. The entire file is about 60MB. Every day the file has about 60 new or changed records. We need to validate some info against that file, and for auditing purposes, we may need to recover the file as it was in certain date. I thought I could use a VCS to store the file using git, but I understand git stores the entire text file gzipped, so the 60BM file will still need about 30MB to store everyday version. I wonder if one of the free VCS stores only diff/patch files.

Do I have to move it to /var catalog ? Does the command interpreter must be statically compiled or have setuid attribute or perhaps must be a symbolic link to /bin/sh or must be no larger than 2MB ? How to prevent a user from checking list of processes started by another user ? How do I forbid a user to see which processes are running by another user ? What do I have to keep in mind when I want to make rsyslogd daemon logrotation ?

looking at the code of Joomla I see that in the first line of the index, it defines the base path of installation with the dirname(FILE) is this a font of possible risk for the site, I mean if a non controlled error message show the internal path of the Joomla directory, because of, for example a failed include, can it be used to perform some kind of attack to the site ? If yes, is it convenient to use this function ? Any idea is welcome. Thanks
