  • Will running CSF & Bastille cause any conflicts?

    - by MatW
I'm taking my first steps into the world of un-managed servers, and have confused myself whilst reading through the 101 tutorials on server hardening that Google spews out! The most recent advice I have been given is to install both CSF and Bastille on my server (used to serve a consumer-facing ecommerce site and act as the business' email server), but my understanding was that both of these tools were an abstraction layer above netfilter / iptables. Will installing both packages cause any conflicts, or do they play well together?

  • How to perform "tracert" like operation from browser?

    - by user329777
I'm remotely investigating issue with my friend's WIN XP computer. The browsers (Chrome and IE) won't show any pages but message with err_connection_reset in details. I've tried to perform "telnet google.com 80" and send there "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" from console and everything went fine, but browsers refused to give me anything. I've checked for presence of firewalls and proxy servers in the settings, but nothing seems to be there. What else to check?

  • Looking for old version of JBuilder

    - by mtgrares
I'm looking for any of these versions:JBuilder 3-9. The reason for this is because my computer is old (256 MB, 800 Mhz cpu) but I still like to program. (Yes, I should upgrade my computer but greenbacks don't grow on trees.) And to prove that I really do program, I have an open source project where you play the trading card game Magic: The Gathering against the computer, http://code.google.com/p/cardforge The latest version was downloaded 1,862 times.

  • What are the popular file indexing engines on Linux?

    - by netvope
It would be nice if you can share your experience on the pros and cons of each of them. Personally I only know Google Desktop and Beagle, and I haven't really used them. I mainly store my files on Windows (and use its integrated indexed search) but I'm trying to see if I can switch over to Linux. Also, can any one of the search indexer run without X? Does any of them provide an API for search queries?

I did some searches on Google to look for sources for disks but haven't been able to find many resources that I could actually buy disks from. • SQL Server 2000 -- Log Shipping reliability?

    - by Chris J
I've been asked to look into log shipping for SQL Server 2000 (yes, 2000): something in my memory tells me that I looked at this years ago and there were question marks over it's reliability. I'm trying to google stuff, but given the age of 2000 now I've put pulled up anything to confirm this -- most seem to say they're using it without problem, so just want confirm whether I'm just being delusional, or whether there were problems, but with a fully patched SP4 box these don't exist any more. Cheers!

Looking for a host-based IDS comparable to tripwire. Preferably one that allows centralized management. Right now I use tripwire and though it works management and reporting through a central server would be ideal. I sometimes see web based applications (eg Avairy, Google Docs) labeled as "software". Is this the true meaning of software? Isn't it supposed to mean applications that run natively on an OS, such as Photoshop or Outlook? Or does it mean ALL applications whether native or web-based?

  • Export layer to png file in gimp

    - by MTilsted
Is there a simple way to export the current selected layer as a png/jpg file in Gimp 2.8.4 ? I did some searching in google, and the export should do it in gimp 2.6 if the layer is the only visible layer, but I can't get that to work for gimp 2.8 The way I currently do it now is that I select the content, and cut/paste it to a new image, then export the image and close it, but a simple export selected layer would be much more easy to use.
