  • I want to learn a new language!

    - by Alex
Hi, I'm a college student majoring in computer science. I know java and will be learning C++ the next couple years at school. I want to add another language to my repertoire and have gotten conflicting advice: Ruby, Python, Perl, JavaScript, PHP, AJAX, among others. I was wondering what everyone's opinions were on the relative value of each of these languages in the job market, the ease of learning of each of the languages, and just personal preferences when it comes to the languages mentioned above. Thanks!

  • Why can't my function access a variable in an enclosing function?

    - by nailer
I know about the LEGB rule. But a simple test of whether a function has read access to variables defined in an enclosing function doesn't seem to actually work. Ie: #!/usr/bin/env python2.4 '''Simple test of Python scoping rules''' def myfunction(): print 'Hope this works: '+myvariable def enclosing(): myvariable = 'ooh this worked' myfunction() if __name__ == '__main__': enclosing() Returns: NameError: global name 'myvariable' is not defined Am I doing something wrong? Is there more to it than the LEGB resolution order?

  • Google Maps + PODSCMS

    - by Sharath
Hi, I have a column called 'location' in a POD which I have created. I was looking to write a input helper where I display a Google Map and the user clicks on a location, and I capture that into this column. This is what I am trying to do <div class="form pick <?php echo $location; ?>"> <script src="http://maps.google.com/maps?file=api&v=1&key=<key_here>" type="text/javascript"></script> <div id="map" style="width:500; height:500"> <script type="text/javascript"> map=new GMap(document.getElementById("map")); map.centerAndZoom(new GPoint(77.595062,13.043359),6); map.setUIToDefault(); </script> </div> </div> But I am getting a number of errors from google maps API. Any idea how i can get this helper in there?

  • After getting the 'It worked!' page with Djangoappengine, what do I do next?

    - by Jacques Bosch
I followed the Djangoappengine instructions. I used their django-testapp and copied the following folders in the django-testapp folder according to what I understood the instructions to say: django djangoappengine djangotoolbox I then started the dev server by running: manage.py runserver Then navigated to http://localhost:8000/ and got the "It worked!" page, which is great, but it says the following at the bottom: You're seeing this message because you have DEBUG = True in your Django settings file and you haven't configured any URLs. Get to work! I am an absolute beginner with Django and App Engine and Djangoappengine and Django-nonrel, so I am pretty lost. How do I configure URLs? Or a link to the how to will help. I took a look at the Django tutorial, but am unsure how much of it is relevant to Djangoappengine and Django-nonrel as a lot of the starting steps have to do with SQL databases. Basically some direction on how to get my app running will be great. Thanx much.

  • Open source equivelants to VS / web reference proxy classes?

    - by seraphym
As an ASP.NET developer, I'm used to working with how VS/C# transparently autogens proxy classes for web references (yes, I know, we're spoiled), but now that I'm creating documentation for more than one coding platform I'm trying to discover what the equivelant to that is in any other framework. So is there a similar way to work transparently with web reference proxy classes for say, RoR, PHP, and Python? And if there's nothing integrated, are there tools you recommend to autogen the proxy classes, or do you recommend to roll custom classes?

  • What speech libraries are available in Linux?

    - by George Edison
When it comes to TTS (text-to-speech) libraries in Linux, what choices do developers have? What libraries ship with the majority of distros? Are there minimal libraries? What functionality does each library offer? I'm approaching this primarily from a C++ point of view, although Python would suit me too.

  • How to keep same substrings in vim regex

    - by invisiblerhino
Hi everyone. I'd ideally like a vim answer to this: I want to change [*, 1, *, *] to [*, 2, *, *] Here the stars refer to individual characters in the substring, which I would like to keep unchanged. For example [0, 1, 0, 1] to [0, 2, 0, 1] [1, 1, 1, 1] to [1, 2, 1, 1] If people know how to do this in perl or python or whatever, that would be equally good. Cheers

  • Setup Jetty 7 with JSP engine

    - by Justin
I've been trying to get Jetty to run my web app via a custom launcher (embedded). I am trying to figure out how to tell Jetty which java compiler to use for JSPs. I want to do what java -jar start.jar -OPTIONS=jsp does, but without using start.jar. Here is what shows on the console: Javac exception, Unable to find a javac compiler; com.sun.tools.javac.Main is not on the classpath. Perhaps JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK Do I need to put the javac libraries into my classpath?

  • Is there any difference between "foo is None" and "foo == None"?

    - by Joe Shaw
Is there any difference between: if foo is None: pass and if foo == None: pass The convention that I've seen in most Python code (and the code I myself write) is the former, but I recently came across code which uses the latter. None is an instance (and the only instance, IIRC) of NoneType, so it shouldn't matter, right? Are there any circumstances in which it might?
