  • What non-programming books should a programmer read (that helps developing programming skills/thinking)?

    - by FeatureCreep
There are a lot of questions about what programming books should be on the programmer's bookshelf. How about non-programming related books that can help you become a better programmer or developer? It would also be interesting to know why they would help. My first choice would be Sun Tzu's "Art of War" (however cliché), because it made it obvious that the success of any project depends on the strength of its weakest link (and warfare is a big project).

  • Cloud just for hosting big files?

    - by yes123
I need a solution to store my big files (50MB+ each). Currently I am using an european dedicated server (100MBits) with 8000GB/motnh at 60USD. I would like to use a cloud service that autmatically fetches my files from my server the first time users request it (like a classic cdn) (So I can have all files stored within 1 server) I was looking at Amazon CloudFront and, to get the same bandwidth 8'000 GB/month, I have to pay like 2000 USD vs my 60 USD of my dedicated server. Is there a cheaper alternative?

  • Is there a known algorithm for scheduling tournament matchups?

    - by barfoon
Just wondering if there is a tournament scheduling algorithm already out there that I could use or even adapt slightly. Here are my requirements: A variable number of opponents belonging to a variable number of teams/clubs each must be paired with an opponent Two opponents cannot be from the same club If there are an odd number of players, 1 of them randomly is selected to get a bye Any algorithms related to this sort of requirement set would be appreciated. EDIT: I only need to run this a maximum of one time, creating matchups for the first 'round' of the tournament.

  • T-SQL Tuesday #015:Remaining on Alert

    - by AllenMWhite
This T-SQL Tuesday is about Automation in SQL Server, and I'll bet you think I'm going to talk about PowerShell. Well, you're partially right. What I'd like to talk about today, though, is setting up alerts to automate some responses to naturally occuring phenomena on your SQL Servers. (Note: I first introduced this technique in an article on Simple Talk here ). Without going back to the original article, I'm talking about a safety valve process for when your transaction logs start to fill at rates...(read more)
