  • How to generate a unified diff in Ruby?

    - by jstayton
After reading through this question about Ruby diff packages, I'm still not sure how to generate a unified diff from two text files. I'm not having trouble reading each file into a string (IO.read()), but I'm not finding any package that can generate a unified diff. Does one exist? Is doing a system call to diff even an option I should consider? (I'm thinking no.) Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

  • Listings in Latex with UTF-8 (or at least german umlauts)

    - by Janosch
Trying to include a source-file into my latex document using the listings package, i got problems with german umlauts inside of the comments in the code. Using \lstset{ extendedchars=\true, inputencoding=utf8x } Umlauts in the source files (encoded in UTF-8 without BOM) are processed, but they are somehow moved to the beginning of the word they are contained in. So // die Größe muss berücksichtigt werden in the input source file, becomes // die ößGre muss übercksichtigt werden in the output file. NOTE: since i found errors in my initial setup, i heavily edited this question

  • In terms of loss of volume or corruption, is failure probability of an Amazon EBS volume 'x', indepe

    - by Tony Morgan
In terms of loss of volume or corruption, is failure probability of an Amazon EBS* volume 'x', independent of the failure of another volume 'y'. Amazon states[1] AFR** of between 0.1%-0.5%, lets say 0.5%, 0.005. To restate the question is the AFR composed of two EBSs mirrored actually 0.005*0.005 = 0.000025? To be clear I'm not interested in high availability here, just very high durability. *EBS = elastic block storage (amazons persistant disks) **AFR = annual failure rate. • iPhone: How to purge a cached UITableViewCell

    - by iPhone dev
iPhone SDK question: Does anyone have suggestions on how to purge a cached UITableViewCell I'd like to cache these cells with reuseIdentifier. However, there are times when I need to delete or modify some of the table rows. I expect to call reloadData after the row changes. Right now, dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier always returns the cached(obsolete) entry from before. How do I indicate that the cache is stale and needs to be purged ?

  • How does assembly language interact with something like the Internet?

    - by Maulrus
So I was thinking about languages the other day, and it struck me that any program written in a compiled language that interacts with the Internet is then translated into assembly that has to interact with the Internet. I've just begun learning a bit of x86 assembly to help me understand C++ a bit better, and I'm baffled by how something so low-level could do something like access the Internet. I'm sure the full answer to this question is much more than would fit in a SO answer, but could somebody give me maybe a basic summary?

  • Java Swing TanleModel fireTableRowsInserted on EDT

    - by Ayman
    I have a TableModel that is populated from a background running thread. I am calling fireTableRowsInserted when data is inserted, which is NOT on the EDT. My question is, do I need to use invokeLater for the fireTableRowsInserted? In other words, is the below correct: public void putData(TableRow row) { // we are not on the EDT here... rows.add(row); fireTableRowsInserted(rows.size()-1, rows.size()-1); }

  • Having trouble with a small example from school

    - by Kalec
The example is from a course, it's for comparing two objects in java: public class Complex { ... public boolean equals (Object obj) { if (obj instanceof Complex) { // if obj is "Complex" (complex number) Complex c = (Complex) obj // No idea return (real == c.real) && (imag == c.imag); // I'm guessing real means [this].real } return false; } } So, my question is: "what does this: Complex c = (Complex) obj actually mean" ? Also I've worked with python and c++, java is new for me.

  • Threading in GWT (Client)

    - by 8EM
From what I understand, the entire client side of a GWT application is converted to Javascript when you build, therefore I suppose this question is related to both Javascript and the possibilities that GWT offers. I have a couple of dozen processes that will need to be initiated in my GWT application, each process will then continuously make calls to a server. Does GWT support threading? Does the GWT client side support threading?

Hi, Something, maybe the windows sdk or visual studio installer, has defined the Platform environment variable and given it the value BNB. What does BNB mean, and why is Platform set to BNB? Thanks. I've seen this, but it doesn't answer my question: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msbuild/thread/1d229d75-aa89-42bf-809b-ef98f42072bb

  • Programmers joy: the proccess or the result?

    - by faya
Hello, Recently I stumbled upon this curious question: What is importing for yourself when programming: process or result? I found myself that I love outcome, when everything is done! So I tried to ask some colleagues at work, but all of them responded that they like the development process the most. Myself I like process too, but not as much as outcome. So to which people category you belong too? And if there is a reason, could you express why?

  • Pass values from MasterPage UserControl to child ASPX Page

    - by Leekey
Hi, Senario: Masterpage with a UserControl and a child ASPX page In the past when using this senario I've used an Interface as a way to pass a value from the UserControl (embedded in a master page) to the masterpage code behind then consume that value in the child aspx page. My question is now that asp.net 4 have arrived is this still a good way to achieve this or is there another or perhaps better way to do it? I've read somewhere that perhaps "delegates" is perhaps another route to take. Any help much appreciated Lk
