• How to make a daemon which will accept arbitrary commands

  Right now the program can be launched in a linux terminal. Once running you can type various commands and the program will do stuff on the machine until the user quits. I would like to make the program into a service that the user runs and it goes to the background. Then the user should be able to make commands to it. Like start and stop, and write something to a log and whatever else my program does. Note that I need to send it arbitrary commands that my program will handle, not just start and stop. Maybe this means it is no longer a daemon - I dont know. How do I do this? Also, if this is not too hard, I would like to be able to run multiple instances of this service. But it is not essential.

• Problem with running a program from flashdrive

  I have a USB drive with two partitions in it, one hidden and one normal. I have an application which swaps the memory and runs the flash application in hidden zone. The problem is that the application works fine on Windows 7 and when run on Win XP, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when I copy the application to desktop and run, it runs with no glitch. I was facing the same problem on Win 7 too, but it was running as required when I ran it using "Run in XP mode" and then I applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. The application is built using VC++ 2008. does anyone know the solution?

• Why should pop() take an argument?

  Quick background I'm a Java developer who's been playing around with C++ in my free/bored time. Preface In C++, you often see pop taking an argument by reference: void pop(Item& removed); I understand that it is nice to "fill in" the parameter with what you removed. That totally makes sense to me. This way, the person who asked to remove the top item can have a look at what was removed. However, if I were to do this in Java, I'd do something like this: Item pop() throws StackException; This way, after the pop we return either: NULL as a result, an Item, or an exception would be thrown. My C++ text book shows me the example above, but I see plenty of stack implimentations taking no arguments (stl stack for example). The Qustion How should one implement the pop function in C++? The Bonus Why?

• Splitting a string with variable number of spaces VBA

  I have a file with a bunch of number in columns. These numbers are separated by variable number of spaces. I want to skip the first line and get all the other lines and separte each number on the line. Finally, I want to write each number on Excel. I've been able to get the lines and write them on Excel but I can't separate each number (I'm getting the whole line as one string). Does any body know how to split a string that has a variable number of spaces? Here is my code. • Ripping a CD to mp3 in C# - third party component or api out there?

  We're working on a project that requires the ripping of audio tracks from CDs to MP3s (ideally also retrieving the track information from CDDB or similar). More background information: Various music labels send us CDs of music which we then deliver to people via an online delivery system. We're looking at automating the process of converting those CDs into MP3s with full track information where possible. We want to produce a simple desktop application that allows a member of editorial staff to setup the information about the new music we receive. To streamline the process we'd like to include the ripping of the audio and retrieval of the track information.

  Is it possible to play a .m3u file streamed from a remote location through Flash Player in a browser? I have a player that loads and plays .mp3 files but also want to be able to play .m3u files. I have looked at the as3plsreader on google code but I think this is only for AIR and desktop files. anyone tried this or know where I should start looking for an answer? If I wasnt to use flash, what other ways could I get remote m3u files to play in a browser?

However, I have a list of URLs that must be excluded (for exmaple, ANY (wildcards) internal link (eg. pokerdiy.com) - so that any internal link that has my domain name in is excluded from this. • Floating images with multiple sizes in CSS

  I'm wanting to be able to create a banner of floating images based on what are uploaded via users. The tool needs to have images of 50x50 and 100x100. At the moment, I just want to randomly display the images and tried to apply float:left. However, as you can see below - it leaves gaps. Is there an easy way to do this without programatically positioning the images? • how do i keep the aspect ratio on image buttons in android?

  i have 5 square ImageButtons that i want to have lined up side by side on the bottom of the screen. I have each one set (different id's) as: <ImageButton android:id="@+id/box1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_gravity="center" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:scaleType="fitXY" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_margin="1dp" /> and i have the background assigned in main java like this: int[] imageIds = new int[] {R.id.box1,R.id.box2,R.id.box3,R.id.box4,R.id.box5}; for(int i = 0; i<5; i++){ imageButtons[i] = (ImageButton) findViewById(imageIds[i]); imageButtons[i].setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.blank); } what i would like to have it do is scale the width to fit neatly side-by-side at the bottom of the screen (which it does now ok), but have the height automatically scale to match the width as well. is this possible? i don't want to use setImageSource because then it puts a border around the imagebutton.

• How Much Does Source Code Cost? Range?

  I have taken a job selling a customized "online workplace management application." Our clients' businesses work around the application. Our clients track their time (which is how they get paid), finances and work documents through the application we provide and give their clients access to their interests throught the application. Our clients range from 2 users to 500 users. Each user probably processes 200 files per year and generates a fee for each file in the range of $500-$2500 per file. The application has been refined over a period of years and has cost around a million to develop. Does anyone know what range something like this sells for (source code, add-ons such as support and hosting)? I am trying to wrap my head around it as my background is not in software development.

  Background I'm working on a symmetric rounding class and I find that I'm stuck with regards to how to best find the number at position x that I will be rounding. I'm sure there is an efficient mathematical way to find the single digit and return it without having to resort to string parsing.   i have used a mail function. after inserting every record simultaneously from multiple PC.   I want to write an app that takes in a model filename via cmd line, create a list of stats (poly count, scaling, as much as possible or maybe the stats that i would like) and to load the model with its textures (with anything else) and draw it from multiple position to save the images as pngs. How would i do this? are there utils i can use to extract data from models? how about drawing the models? my server does not have a desktop or video card, would no video HW be a problem?

  I was testing my website inside the Android emulator with the Droid Skin (240 dpi). I have the following css: #container { position: relative; width: 854px; height: 480px; background: #000; margin: auto; } #container li { position: relative; list-style: none; width: 201px; height: 110px; padding-left: 10px; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:10px; overflow: hidden; float: left; z-index: 2; } The display is not what I expected obviously because I am defining everything in px (when I should have been using dip but css does not allow dip). How can I convert my px to something that is suitable for Android? Any suggestions?

• Textbox is disabled after adding text dynamically in codebehind

  Can't quite work out what is happening but The background is that I am dynamically adding table rows in a web page and some of the cells hold controls such as dropdowns etc. One of the columns pulls a size into it. However the column I am having issues with is the next column which takes the text from teh previous dropdown and shows the appropriate price. • Text Link is Hiding my Image Link

  I have a image where text/link is overlayed on top. My problem is that sometimes the text in the foreground will hide the link in the image in the background. I assume this is because the text box forms an invisible rectangle around the text, thus creating a region that appears it should belong to the image but is actually being covered by the text. I am wondering if it is possible that when I mouse over this region, I will be linking to my image link as oppose to my text link (see illustration). http://jsfiddle.net/WHpMr/

• jQuery Dialog theme not being applied

  I'm using jquery-1.4.2.min.js and jquery-ui-1.8.1.custom.min.js. According to Firebug, both minimized scripts have been loaded. They both appear in the dropdown list on Firebug's Scripts tab. The dialog is launching, but there's no background and so the text below it shows through, and there's no "window" stuff at all, no titlebar, no X button. Just the floating/draggable text with a -close- link at the top left corner. I was under the impression from reading these pages http://jqueryui.com/demos/dialog/ http://jqueryui.com/themeroller/ that the UI theme-driven appearance would be automatically applied to the dialog when it was invoked using this barebones call: $('#dialog').dialog() I would be grateful for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this. • How do I calculate a good hash code for a list of strings?

  Background: I have a short list of strings. The number of strings is not always the same, but are nearly always of the order of a “handful” In our database will store these strings in a 2nd normalised table These strings are never changed once they are written to the database. We wish to be able to match on these strings quickly in a query without the performance hit of doing lots of joins. So I am thinking of storing a hash code of all these strings in the main table and including it in our index, so the joins are only processed by the database when the hash code matches. So how do I get a good hashcode? I could: Xor the hash codes of all the string together Xor with multiply the result after each string (say by 31) Cat all the string together then get the hashcode Some other way So what do people think? (If you care we are using .NET and SqlServer)
