  Microsoft has released recently free eBooks on various Microsoft Technology. The best part is that all these books are available in ePub, Mobi and PDF. You can download them to your local machine or eBook reader and read them. This is a great start as many important subjects are now covered and converted into an eBook. I personally read through a few of the books and found they are very comprehensive and and detailed. The goal is not to cover complete technology in a single book but rather pick a single topic and discuss it in detail. The source of the book is white paper, Technet wiki as well book online and it is clearly listed right bellow the book title. Following are the books available for SQL Server Technology and I encourage all of you to have a look at them as they are great resources. This is indeed a great attempt as each book talks about the a single subject in depth keeping author focus on the single and simple subject. I have previously written two books by focusing on the same subject and I had great pleasure writing it as well. Writing on focus subjects gives complete freedom to author to explore the a single subject without having burden to cover everything which is associated with that technology at large. Just like eBooks mentioned earlier my SQL Server Wait Stats was inspired from my article series on SQL Wait Stats. The latest book SQL Server Interview Question and Answers was derived from my article series on SQL Interview Q and A. Writing book is an absolutely different concept than writing blog posts. When I was converting my blog posts to books, I ended up writing 50% new material and end up removing many repetitive content which shows up in blog series. • SQL Server 2000 need to prevent logons whilst performing a backup for a side by side migration

  I'm looking for a way to prevent logons from occurring in order to take a full backup of a Database to migrate from its current SQL Server 2000 instance to a new SQL 2005 instance. A friend of mine suggested running a script which would put the DB into a rollback state. Not being a DBA my DDL is very poor and running a script that I don't understand may not be the best idea. One option which might be easier is to simply detach and copy, to the new server. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Why does my application hang in interruptible state?

  Hello, I am running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server an GTK application that used to work fine. It suddenly started to hang in interruptible state (Sl+) without any apparent reason. Here is a snippet of the strace: poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}], 2, 0) = 0 (Timeout) poll([{fd=5, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=5, revents=POLLOUT}]) writev(5, [{"\2\30\4\0\224\4\240\0\0@\0\0\37\0\240\0\2\4\4\0\224\4\240\0\0@\0\0\37\0\240\0"..., 192}, {NULL, 0}, {"", 0}], 3) = 192 read(5, 0x2ba9ac4, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) I googled that line read(5, 0x2ba9ac4, 4096), which seems to be more significant, and it seems that many other applications tend to have the same problem. I tried to restart my X server, but it didn't help. Do you have an idea how to solve this problem?

• windows server backup 2008 R2 - what is generating all the change data?

  We have a small relatively idle windows server 2008 R2 installation that does basic filesharing and exchange for about 10 not very active users. When running a windows server backup, the incremental data daily is about 20GB. This is not coming from users shared files, nor from changes in their mailbox sizes. The total size of the installation is 249GB, which is mostly old files. Where is all this data coming from, and how can I reduce it ? Using online backup of the vhd file from the backup is taking a while because of this daily change. Is there some way I can at least see what files are changing and contributing to this data ? Options I can think of but am not sure about: 1) pagefile churning - altho the backup does not include the pagefile, perhaps the changed blocks left behind are included ? 2) logs or something ? but the installation size stays the same every day 3) should I zero free space using sdelete before backing up perhaps ?

  I want to use a server as a device to run a script to parse a SMS text in the following way. I. The person types in a specific and special cell phone number (Similar to Facebook’s 32556 number used to post on your wall) II. The user types a text message. III. The user sends the text message. IV. The message is sent to some kind of Device (the server) or SMS Gateway and receives it. V. The thing described above that the message is sent to then parse the test message. I understand that these three question will mix Programming and Server Stuff and could reside here or at DBA.SE How would I make such a cell phone number (described in step I) that would be sent to the Device? How do I create the device that then would receive it? Finally, how do I Parse the text message? I don't want to pay for cloud space, server scripting stuff or server space; I want to just use a free webserver to do this totally free - meaning I will have to do more on my own... My question can be seen in more depth in this visual flowchart

• Citrix XenApp application does not have keyboard focus when launched

  On new or existing Citrix XenApp 4.5 servers, I am having problems streaming the Allscripts Pro EHR application via the XenApp web interface. When users launch the application via the Citrix XenApp web interface, the application does not have focus, preventing users from typing in their username and password. If they use their mouse to select either the username or password fields, they still cannot enter any text. However, if they do any of the following actions, they can then enter in their username and password and the application runs without problems: Click on the Login button with empty fields. Logon fails but they can then enter their credentials. Minimize the login window and then maximize it. They can then gain keyboard focus to enter their credentials. What might be preventing this particular application from having focus when it launches?

• What advantages does developing applications for smartphones have over developing the same application as a web application?

  Let's take the Facebook application as an example. Why did they develop an application when the users could just access to their page and do the same? For me that represents more maintenance and more cost because for each feature added to the web application that feature will have to be added to the smartphone application as well. So why would I want to develop more than once (for each patform iOS, Android, etc) when I could just have one web application? What benefits do I get? The only one that comes to my mind is GPS feature. EDIT: My question is more oriented towards business applications that are going to be used only by some members of the company, it's not about selling the application (private use). So contrary to what some answers say about that by developing as a smartphone application it will benefit from more sells because of the "smartphone stores" for me this point is not important because the application is for private use. By developing the application as a web application it means that it can be accessed through smartphone browser and also in a PC (any capable browser), but developing as a native application would limit this to only some kind of smartphone so we would be limiting the use. On the other hand developing it as a web application means that in order to access the application an Internet connection must be available. So keeping this in mind how would you convince your boss to write the application for a given smartphone platform (iOS/Android) vs developing it as a web application?

  we're managing some web sites for our clients on our servers, some running Windows Server 2003 R2 and others running 2008 R2. In Windows Server 2008 R2, we can disable completely .NET framework usage for some application pools, which is great since most of our websites are still using classic ASP. After some issues with classic ASP applications being configured to run as ASP.NET 4 in a CLR 2.0 pool, we wanted to do the same thing in IIS6 - that is, have application pools without any .NET support. Is this a supported scenario in IIS6? Thanks

  Basically I have a website hosted by a web hosting company which I have limited access to (ftp upload etc). I have a home server which I use to record and store audio files. Is there an elegant way or best practice to host a page on the webserver which links to the audio files? I'm considering hosting a page on the home server and redirecting to that from the web server, or setting up something like rsync to push the audio files to the web server - I'm just not certain which solution would be best.

• Do I need to disable access to a publisher database when setting up SQL Server 2000 Transactional Re

  I have a production database i.e. where there are constant updates and I've configured this to be published to another server using Transactional Replication. When I configure transactional replication I've been doing the following: disable access to the source database backup source DB then restore to subscription server configure replication re-enable DB access to our apps The problem with this approach is scheduling in downtime, having to suspend all the various timed scheduled tasks we run and shutting down access to our various applications that are dependant on this database. Can I just configure transactional replication without disabling access to the publishing database and the subscriber database will correctly catch up? i.e. are all the DML statements queued on the publisher and as soon as the subscriber is ready they are picked off and executed?

  Hi When I try to start my local server in RAD it takes ages to start. In startserver.log it stays at the following log statement for about 5 minutes ADMU3100I: Reading configuration for server: server1 When it moves on from this log statement, the server starts as normal. I have tried creating a new server profile and starting a server with no projects but I get the same results. What could be the issue here? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. • ServerName no longer works as SQL Server 2008 Default instance name?

  Folks, Somehow in struggling to install something (Sage MIP), I have unsettled my system's SQL Server 2008 instance names. If I fired up SSMS and connected to "MySystemName" (while logged into MySystemName), I used to immediately connect and could view my databases. Now if I connect to "(local)" or "." I connect just fine...but "MySystemName" gives me a timeout error. If I log in with "." and do "SELECT @@SERVERNAME" it comes back with "MySystemName" just fine. I've double checked that my network name is in the Security\Logins list, and it is, as a dbadmin. Any suggestions? I thought that having SQL Server 2005 Express might be a problem (the "battle of the default instances"), so I uninstalled that. No better.

• When adding second processor to SQL Server, will it automatically balance the load?

  We have a SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.5) on a dedicated box with a single 2.4Ghz processor, which regularly runs at 70-80% CPU. We are going to be adding a significant number of users to the application and therefore want to add a second processor to the box (scale up). Will SQL Server automatically use the second processor to balance threads, or is there additional configuration that will need to be done? In other words, will adding the second processor drop my CPU usage to 35-40% per CPU, automatically balancing the load? Based on what I read here, it seems that it will: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181007.aspx However, I've read elsewhere that CPU performance gains can be made by assigning database tables to different filegroups, but I'm not sure we want to get that complicated at this point.

  We are planning to set up a complete ERP and CRM system for a medium-sized global company, that might turn into a essential tool for all locations once deployed. For now these locations include USA, Germany, China and Indonesia, but the list is growing quickly. My question is, where it is best to physically locate the server to ensure the access times are optimal from all (future) locations? On my mind, I am dealing with multiple connected servers (a cloud?), where each of our users is served by the physically closest server. Being in a very competitive field we would also like to rule out, that any data is stored in mainland China... Thanks for any advice and pointers!

• the best way to connect sql server (Windows authentication vs SQL Server authentication) for asp.net

  I have a database and a site having forms authentication. It is working fine with VS2008. This time, I am using "Trusted_connection =True". But when it is opened from outside or directly from browser then I am getting error "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'." I know this is due to permission. SQL server is based on windows authentication. What is the best approach to manage user to connect SQL Server? Should I enable SQL Server authentication? Let me know what to do so that it makes the production feel and there wouldn't be any problem during deployment. Note: SQL Server is installed on domain server.

  Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

• SQLAuthority News – Author Visit – SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch

  June 11, 2010 was a wonderful day because I attended the very first SQL Server 2008 R2 Launch event held by Microsoft at Mumbai. I traveled to Mumbai from my home town, Ahmedabad. The event was located at one of the best hotels in Mumbai,”The Leela”. SQL Server R2 Launch was an evening event that had a few interesting talks. SQL PASS is associated with this event as one of the partners and its goal is to increase the awareness of the Community about SQL Server. I met many interesting people and had a great networking opportunity at the event. This event was kicked off with an awesome laser show and a “Welcome” video, which was followed by a Microsoft Executive session wherein there were several interesting demo. The very first demo was about Powerpivot. I knew beforehand that there will be Powerpivot demos because it is a very popular subject; however, I was really hoping to see other interesting demos from SQL Server 2008 R2. And believe me; I was happier to see the later demos. There were demos from SQL Server Utility Control Point, as well an integration of Bing Map with Reporting Servers. I really enjoyed the interactive and informative session by Shivaram Venkatesh. He had excellent presentation skills as well as ample technical knowledge to keep the audience attentive. I really liked his presentations skills wherein he did not read the whole slide deck; rather, he picked one point and using that point he told the story of the whole slide deck. I also enjoyed my conversation with Afaq Choonawala, who is one of the “gem guys” in Microsoft. I also want to acknowledge Ashwin Kini and Mohit Panchal for their excellent support to this event. Mumbai IT Pro is a user group which you can really count on for any kind of help. After excellent demos and a vibrant start of the event, all the audience was jazzed up. There were two vendors’ sessions right after the first session. Intel had 15 minutes to present; however, Intel’s representative, who had good knowledge of the subject, had nearly 30+ slides in his presentation, so he had to rush a bit to cover the whole slide deck. Intel presentations were followed up by another vendor presentation from NetApp. I have previously heard about this tool. After I saw the demo which did not work the first time the Net App presenter demonstrated it, I started to have a doubt on this product. I personally went to clarify my doubt to the demo booth after the presentation was over, but I realize the NetApp presenter or booth owner had absolutely a POOR KNOWLEDGE of SQL Server and even of their own NetApp product. The NetApp people tried to misguide us and when we argued, they started to say different things against what they said earlier. At one point in their presentation, they claimed their application does something very fast, which did not really happen in front of all the audience. They blamed SQL Server R2 DBCC CHECKDB command for their product’s failed demonstration. I know that NetApp has many great products; however, this one was not conveyed clearly and even created a negative impression to all of us. Well, let us not judge the potential, fun, education and enigma of the launch event through a small glitch. This event was jam-packed and extremely well-received by everybody who attended it. As what I said, average demos and good presentations by MS folks were really something to cheer about. Any launch event is considered as successful if it achieves its goal to excite users with its cutting edge technology; just like this event that left a very deep impression on me. • SQL SERVER – A Puzzle – Swap Value of Column Without Case Statement

  For the last few weeks, I have been doing Friday Puzzles and I am really loving it. Yesterday I received a very interesting question by Navneet Chaurasia on Facebook Page. He was asked this question in one of the interview questions for job. Please read the original thread for a complete idea of the conversation. I am presenting the same question here. Puzzle Let us assume there is a single column in the table called Gender. The challenge is to write a single update statement which will flip or swap the value in the column. For example if the value in the gender column is ‘male’ swap it with ‘female’ and if the value is ‘female’ swap it with ‘male’. Here is the quick setup script for the puzzle. USE tempdb GO CREATE TABLE SimpleTable (ID INT, Gender VARCHAR(10)) GO INSERT INTO SimpleTable (ID, Gender) SELECT 1, 'female' UNION ALL SELECT 2, 'male' UNION ALL SELECT 3, 'male' GO SELECT * FROM SimpleTable GO The above query will return following result set. The puzzle was to write a single update column which will generate following result set. There are multiple answers to this simple puzzle. Let me show you three different ways. I am assuming that the column will have either value ‘male’ or ‘female’ only. Method 1: Using CASE Statement I believe this is going to be the most popular solution as we are all familiar with CASE Statement. UPDATE SimpleTable SET Gender = CASE Gender WHEN 'male' THEN 'female' ELSE 'male' END GO SELECT * FROM SimpleTable GO Method 2: Using REPLACE  Function I totally understand it is the not cleanest solution but it will for sure work in giving situation. UPDATE SimpleTable SET Gender = REPLACE(('fe'+Gender),'fefe','') GO SELECT * FROM SimpleTable GO Method 3: Using IIF in SQL Server 2012 If you are using SQL Server 2012 you can use IIF and get the same effect as CASE statement. UPDATE SimpleTable SET Gender = IIF(Gender = 'male', 'female', 'male') GO SELECT * FROM SimpleTable GO You can read my article series on SQL Server 2012 various functions over here.
