• The 80 column limit, still useful?

  Related: While coding, how many columns do you format for? Is there a valid reason for enforcing a maximum width of 80 characters in a code file, this day and age? I mostly use C, however this question is language agnostic. Its also subjective, so I'll tag it as such. Many individual projects set their own various coding standards, a guide to adjust your coding style. Many enforce an 80 column limit on code, i.e. don't force a dumb 80 x 25 terminal to wrap your lines in someone else's editor of choice if they are stuck with such a display, don't force them to turn off wrapping. Both private and open source projects usually have some style guidelines. My question is, in this day and age, is that requirement more of a pest than a helper? Does anyone still login via the local console with no framebuffer and actually edit code? If so, how often and why cant you use SSH? I help to manage a few open source projects, I was considering extending this limit to 110 columns, but I wanted to get feedback first. So, any feedback is appreciated. I can see the need to make certain OUTPUT of programs (i.e. a --help /h display) 80 columns or less, but I really don't see the need to force people to break up code under 110 columns long into 2 lines, when its easier to read on one line. I can also see the case for adhering to an 80 column limit if you're writing code that will be used on micro controllers that have to be serviced in the field with a god-knows-what terminal emulator. Beyond that, what are your thoughts? Edit: This is not an exact duplicate. I am asking very specific questions, such as how many people are actually still using such a display. I am also not asking "what is a good column limit", I'm proposing one and hoping to gather feedback. Beyond that, I'm also citing cases where the 80 column limit is still a good idea. I don't want a guide to my own "c-style", I'm hoping to adjust standards for several projects. • x86 Assembly - printf doesn't print without "\n"

  So I'm confused. I'm going through the book "Programming from the Ground Up" and am working with using libraries. printf is working just fine so long as I include a "\n" in the string, but without it it will print absolutely nothing. Any idea why this happens? Code: .section .data my_str: .ascii "Jimmy Joe is %d years old!\n\0" my_num: .long 76 .section .text .globl _start _start: pushl my_num pushl $my_str call printf movl $1, %eax movl $0, %ebx int $0x80 Also, when I use -m elf_i386 for 32-bit mode and -dynamic-linker /lib/ld-linux.so.2 -lc to link, I get the warning ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib64/libc.so when searching for -lc If that makes any difference, or if anybody has any suggestions as to how to have it load the 32-bit library directly. • How to name variables which are structs

  Hello, i often work on private projects using the WinApi, and as you might know, it has thousands of named and typedefed structs like MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION. I will stick to this one in my question, what still is preferred, or better when you want to name a variable of this type. Is there some kind of style guide for this case? For example if i need that variable for the VirtualQueryEx function. Some ideas: MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION memoryBasicInformation; MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION memory_basic_information; Just use the name of the struct non capitalized and with or without the underlines. MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION basicInformation; MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION information; Short form? MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION mbi; I often see this style, using the abbreviation of the struct name. MEMORY_BASIC_INFORMATION buffer; VirtualQueryEx defines the third parameter lpBuffer (where you pass the pointer to the struct), so using this name might be an idea, too. Cheers

• Best way to check for nullable bool in a condition expression (if ...)

  I was wondering what was the most clean and understandable syntax for doing condition checks on nullable bools. Is the following good or bad coding style? Is there a way to express the condition better/more cleanly? bool? nullableBool = true; if (nullableBool ?? false) { ... } else { ... } especially the if (nullableBool ?? false) part. I don't like the if (x.HasValue && x.Value) style ... (not sure whether the question has been asked before ... couldn't find something similar with the search)

• Automatic VisualState Manager in Silverlight

  If you create a simple button and then choose Edit Template - Edit a Copy, Blend will automatically generate a style area, along with all the button states (MouseEnter, MouseLeave, Pressed, etc). No where in the code behind or auto generated style area does it say that on a "MouseOver" event, change the state to "MouseOver", but it still manages to work! Is the only way to change a button's state have to be done the code behind using the VisualStateManager.GoToState method, or can you change it much like CSS does (a:hover) using the VisualStateManager? From my experience, setting just doesn't seem to do the trick.

• Dojo Select widget validation style

  Many dojo form widgets, like DateTextBox will style themselves in red (claro theme) with an "!" to indicate that the field isn't valid after focus. I can't seem to get this type of styling to work with the Select widget. I have the value set to required, but if the user leaves it in the default state, blank, then it remains unstyled. I tried to test this programmatically: wigs = dijit.findWidgets(node); for( i = 0; i < wigs.length; i++ ) { wigs[i].focus(); } This triggers validation on several other widgets and they are styled appropriately, but not he Select widgets. Anyone know how to make it obvious that those select widgets are not validating? Oh, and wigs[i].isValid() is definitely false for those select widgets.

• Perl: print back to beginning of line

  Okay, so what I'm trying to do is print out a percentage complete to my command line, now, I would like this to simply 'update' the number shown on the screen. So somehow go back to the beginning of the line and change it. For example the windows relog.exe command-line utility (which can convert a .blg file to a .csv file) does this. If you run it, it will display a percentage complete. Now this is probably written in C++. I don't know if this is possible in perl as well ?

• design function: underlying structure to store list of results for print to file

  is this a good approach to print a list of items to csv file with a sublist attached to each item. The gist of the function is when an item is found that does not exactly macth then a list of close matches is generated - this works now writing out one list at a time to a command window. For export to a csv file I think all the lists must be generated, stored and then written at once. Right now I use a struct to store the attributes printed, each struct is an item on the list - these structs are then added to a sorted stack and when printed they pop off into write out. Is a stack of stacks of structs a good design?

  I'd like to automatically pretty-print (indentation, mostly) the HTML output that my PHP scripts generate. I've been messing with Tidy, but have found that in its efforts to validate and clean my code, Tidy is changing way too much. I know Tidy's intentions are good but I'm really just looking for an HTML beautifier. Is there a simpler library out there that can run in PHP and just do the pretty-printing? Or, is there a way to configure Tidy to skip all the validation stuff and just beautify?

So, in the following situation, I create a feature branch, and there are commits to the trunk E---F---G Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk I'm looking for a tool which copies the trunk, and applies the commits one by one, letting me resolve any conflicts if any exist - but each commit retains the same commit message, and is still a separate commit. E'---F'---G' Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk So commit E' will be a commit with the same changes as E, except in the case of E causing a conflict, in which case E' will differ from E in that E' has the conflicts resolved, and the same commit message as E. I'm looking for this as it helps in keeping branches up to date with trunk - the svnmerge.py / mergeinfo way does not help, as you still need to resolve your changes when you merge back to trunk.

  I am wondering if there is anything built in to Silverlight, or possibly c# to allow for printing reports? I'd be happy with any number of methods: exporting files to a pdf format and printing from there, exporting as a text document of some sort and printing from there, or just simply showing the print dialog from the web application itself. I know there are ways to do this in C#, but the c# code-behind is different for many things in Silverlight applications and I can't seem to find anything that will work. So if anyone has any ideas on things I could try it would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

• Print the next X number of lines in Scala

  Trying to learn Scala using the Programming in Scala book and they have a very basic example for reading lines from a file. I'm trying to expand on it and read a file line by line, look for a certain phrase, then print the next 6 lines following that line if it finds the line. I can write the script easily enough in something like java or Perl but I have no idea how to do it in Scala (probably because I'm not very familiar with the language yet...) Let's suppose we have : A: public class MyDict { public Dictionary<int,string> dict; // do custom-serialization of "dict" public void SaveToFile(...); // customized deserialization of "dict" public void LoadFromFile(...); } B: public class MyDict : Dictionary<int,string> { } Which option would be better in the matter of programming style ? class B: is to be de/serialized externally. Main problem is : is it better to create new class (which would have only one property - like opt A:) or to create a new class derived - like opt B: ? I don't want any other data processing than adding/removing and de/serializing to stream. Thanks in advance!

• Ignore document style rules in one element.

  I write a greasemonkey script that adds sticky notes to websites. Because there sometimes are pretty strange style rules used in some websites the sticky notes sometimes turn up messed up (or at least not looking like I want them to look). Is there a way to say "under this element do not apply any generic stylerules"? So that rules associated with tag names are not applied, but rules associated with certain classes and ids still are. Or does anyone have a better idea on how to ensure that only my styles are applied to the sticky notes?
