• OpenSolaris Dead / Alive?

  Hi all, I have used Open Solaris in the past and really liked it, minus the lack of support for a few applications I use such as UFraw, Hugin, and wacom. I can compile from source, but where is the fun in that. It seems the release dates for the next Open Solaris keep getting pushed back and the release that was scheduled to happen quietly got pulled from their site. So, they're no longer saying development for 10.03 has already begun because it has come and gone and there is no release. Walter

The server starts successfully but the ffserver commands used to feed the ffserver fails and generates a core dump. • Best way to setup multiple monitors?

  Hello, I currently have 5 displays. The following is how I installed them. Three 19'' for workspace. One of them is connect directly to the graphic card via DVI. Two of them are using usb graphic adapters. One 720 projector - directly connect to the graphic card via DVI. One 30'' dell monitor - currently connect to laptop via VGA. I would like to connect 30' dell to my main computer. I do not game or use graphic applications. What would be my best options? I am thinking to buy two lower-performance ati or nvidia cards and install them as crossfire(???) or sli. Am I thinking correctly?

  I'm trying to determine the size of the files that would be newly copied when syncing two folders by running rsync in dry mode and then summing up the sizes of the files listed in the output of rsync. Currently I'm stuck at prefixing the files by their parent folder. I found out how to prefix lines using sed and how to escape using sed, but I'm having troubles combining those two.   I'm attempting to use the Polar IrDA device with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.   I have 2 pcs with win xp and a wifi router ( without outgoing internet connection )...my job was to connect them over wifi to share some files. router was properly configured, both computers connected to wifi without problems, but when I tried to network them I could not see them in workgroup...i changed their names and added them to same workgroup but i couldn't connect pc1 to pc2 ( i could ping router from each pc but pinging other computer resulted in ping timeout) ..now i cant figure out why this is not working since I've done this before on more complex networks and it should work but...( maybe I have gremlins hiding somewhere..) edit1: Firewall is down on both machines( I disengaged it in both control panel and in services) and folder sharing and permissions are ok.. edit2: I know about Ad Hoc network ( wlan-to-wlan, without router/switch ) but that's not what I am trying to accomplish here :)

• Google chrome asking for username and password for OWA

  Hi, i have a question about the google chrome browser. When i navigate to my work's Outlook Web Access site to read my emails, the chrome browser is prompting me for a username and password to the server saying "Authentication Required - the server XXXXXX.XXX:443 requires a username and password. After i put them in i then have to enter in the normal OWA username and password to access my emails as per normal. The funny thing is.. 1] If i click CANCEL on the first dialog it takes me to the OWA screen and i can log in normal anyway. However - subqeuent page clicks will keep prompting me each time for the server credentials. 2] I am NOT prompted for server UN and PW if i use IE or fireFox. Does anyone know how to stop chrome from asking me each time? or is it a server setting - i do know that a friend who uses the same browser (chrome) and also OWA does not have the same problem (NB: they work at a different company) Thanks!

• Creating a dynamic lacp trunk from HP Procurve 2412zl to Proliant DL380 G7

  I'm configuring an IEEE 802.3ad (LACP) dynamic trunk from a HP Procurve 2412zl (firmware version K.15.07) switch to a HP Proliant DL380 G7 server. The DL380 has 4 NICs and is running Win2008 R2, so I'm teaming the NICs together and leaving everything on the recommended "automatic" setting in the HP NIC configuration tool. The server is one of two, they'll be connected on interfaces F17-F20 and F21-F24 respectively on the switch. I need the servers in a separate VLAN, here is the configuration for the VLAN: vlan 10 name "Lab_Mgmt" untagged B2,F17-F24 ip address 172.22.71.3 255.255.255.0 tagged B21 exit There is a DHCP-relay into the VLAN 10 from another device beyond interface B21. The Advanced Traffic Management Guide says that in order to run a dynamic LACP trunk on another VLAN besides the DEFAULT_VLAN, you need to first enable GVRP and then use "forbid" to stop the interfaces from automatically joining DEFAULT_VLAN when the dynamic trunk is created. GVRP brings some other stuff with it that I don't want or need, so I disable it with "unknown-vlans disable" on all other interfaces. Everything should be good, but it isn't. The server is not getting an IP-address from the DHCP, which it does if I'm not enabling LACP. If I configure the server to a static IP-address on the VLAN 10 subnet, it can't even ping the switch IP-address, much less anything outside of the VLAN. The switch can't ping the server either. I did another attempt with F17-F20 tagged, and checking the box "Default Native Tag (VLAN 10)" in the NIC configuration tool on the server, but there was no difference. Does anyone have any idea what I might have missed?

• Getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN

  I'm having issues getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN. The server setup consists of a security device (DrayTek V3300) which passes the PPTP authentication to a SBS2003 server running RRAS. The server is the DC and provides DNS and WINS, the single NIC's name server is set to the NIC's IP (192.168...), and DHCP on the DrayTek sets the server IP as the DNS. If I create a new VPN connection in Win7, leaving everything as default apart from the server, username, password and domain, I can: ping everything by IP address resolve IPs with nslookup using their fully-qualified name, as in nslookup fileserver.mydomain.local ping machines by fully-qualified name, as in ping fileserver.mydomain.local However if I try to access a file share: within Explorer, I get "Windows cannot access ..." with "Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error", using net use z: \\fileserver.mydomain.local\share, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." If I add the machine name to my HOSTS file I can use the file share, which is my last-ditch workaround, but I have a number of VPN users and would rather a solution that doesn't involve me trying to hand-edit system files on computers half a country away. If I set the WINS server explicitly in the connection's IPv4 settings I don't have to use the FQN to ping the machine, but that doesn't change anything else. EDIT: The PC I'm having the issue on is running Win 7 Home Premium. After more testing I actually have two other PCs that work, one W7HP, one XP Home, and another Vista PC that doesn't work (not tested as much as the others), all four on the same internet connection (behind the same router). All of them were tested with a straight-forward, all defaults, new VPN configuration.

• Blackberry Enterprise Server v5.x not forwarding mail to devices

  My BlackBerry enterprise server recently stopped forwarding messages to devices. In fact, the server claims that the last time it communicated with all the devices associated with it, was on Thursday night (2 nights ago.) The catch is this, the Exchange server is running properly (or as properly as Exchange can run :) ) The SQL server seems to be running properly. And the Blackberry Enterprise server seems to be running correctly. Other than the fact that the server has not communicated with my device since Thursday, and the fact that I am not getting messages, there is nothing wrong. How do I get these message to be forwarded to devices again? I have restarted the BES services int he order suggested by the BlackBerry folks

  A family member of mine recently went on vacation and turned off their computer, something they normally do not do, upon returning home it would not turn on and now returns the error message below. Generally friends and family come to me for help with computers and I have no problem, however this time I am a bit stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As you can see the error message is: Status: 0xc000000e Info: The best selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. Before going to this error message it briefly flashes the Windows loading screen. I have been able to confirm through the Windows RE Command Line and the dir command that the C: drive is accessible and likely is just suffering a bootup issue. I have tried: Launching the repair process discussed in the error message three times however each time it requires a restart and then returns to the same error message. Changing the boot order to be hard drive first Getting into safe mode; F8 just results in the same error message before I can get to the menu to select safe mode I have checked to make sure the BCD (bcdedit, Boot Configuration Data) is still intact as per https://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH160475 I plan to try (but would like additional comments on): sfc /scannow; requires a restart and thus will likely result in the error message again A memory scan Bootrec as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392#method1 Swapping IDE cables/ports Resetting the BIOS I noticed others with similar issues around the web are dual-booting however this machine is not setup in a dual-boot environment. Additionally at one point this error message supposedly showed up before I started working on the computer: The instruction at 0xfbe2584d referenced memory at 0x00000008. The memory could not be read. As previously stated any additional suggestions or words of advice would be greatly apprecaited.

• Filter rule for SMS / text messages in exchange active sync (SMS sync)

  Exchange server 2010 introduces SMS Sync (via exchange active sync), which works fine with my android device and the Samsung email app. However, all text messages are synced to my exchange inbox, which is a pain. I'd like to have them filtered to a specific folder. So far, I haven't figured out a useful filter rule for achieving that, since there seems to be no header indicating it's a text message. Has anyone managed to do that? Note that I'm not using Outlook as an email client, so I'm specifically looking for a server-side rule.

  Hello, I created install script that will install SQL Server 2008 R2 on windows XP SP3, windows vista and windows 7. One of the command that i used in the installation is for silent installation of SQL Server 2008 R2. When i install it on windows XP everything works just fine but when i try to install it on Windows 7 i get an error. What am I doing wrong?   Ok, I'm not a script writer, otherwise I'd have this automated already. I need a quick assist in the most basic steps possible. I have a SharePoint form library using InfoPath based forms. I have a "Public" template for my customers which submits to a "Private" library, through very granulated permissions so they cannot view the library. The Private library has it's own template based on the original Public template. This way I can transition one form's information seamlessly to the new template. The new Private template would have all of the internal details that we do not want the customer to see, but also all information fron the customer-filled Public form. Is there any way to default all items opened from the Private library to use the Private Template, even though they were submitted form the Public template?

• Double Layer DVD+R burning problem - I/O Error

  I have a modern PC (Quad Core CPU, 4 GB RAM, Win7 Home Premium 64-bit) but I have a problem with burning .dvd images to Double Layer (8.5 GB) DVDs. I wasted too many DVD+R DL discs but to no avail. Here is a short explanation of what I did: I'm using ImgBurn v2.5.0.0 (latest version). I'm trying to burn an image file (.dvd) which is together with the related .iso file in the same folder. In ImgBurn, I select the file with .dvd extension, and set writing speed to 2.4x. Burning process starts normally, but around 7% of the process, it gives a I/O Write Error, which is as follows: I wasted 3 discs (Magic, Made in Taiwan, DVD+R DL, 8.5 GB) trying the same thing. My DVD writer is LG GH22NP20 with IDE connection type. I updated its firmware from 1.04 to 2.00 but no success in burning again. Then my cousin brought his LG (an older model) which, he claims, was successful in writing DL discs with the same brand (Magic). I plugged off my LG and plugged the older one in, and tried to burn the image again. It also gave an I/O Error even without standing till 7%. I tried another burning program (CloneCD), but failed again. Then I bought other brands (TDK and VERBATIM) and tried to burn the image. Burning process started successfully, but around 14% (for Verbatim) and 25% (for TDK) failed again. Here is a screeny from ImgBurn: I've burned lots of 4.7 GB DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs successfully, even without a single error, with this LG DVD writer, but this case is very bothering for me. What should I do? Should I buy a new DVD writer other than LG? Could this be related to Windows or my hardware configuration? Thanks for your help. Edit: My burner works on my cousin's machine. So the problem must be related to my system. What could be the reason? Latest news: I borrowed an external USB DVD writer from a friend, which is PHILIPS SPD3000CC (an old model). Guess what! It's burning DVD+R DLs successfully! How come an internal DVD writer of a brand new computer system cannot burn DL DVDs? • Capistrano asks for SSH password when deploying from local machine to server

  When I try to ssh to a server, I'm able to do it as my id_rsa.pub key is added to the authorized keys in the server. Now when I try to deploy my code via Capistrano to the server from my local project folder, the server asks for a password.   I'm trying to use nscd (Nameservices Cache Daemon) to cache dns locally so I can stop using bind to do it. I've gotten it started and ntpd seems to attempt to use it. But everything else for hosts seems to ignore it. e.g if I do dig apache.org 3 times none of them will hit the cache. I'm viewing the cache stats using nscd -g to determine whether it's been used.
