  • Do Hibernate table classes need to be Serializable?

    I have inherited a Websphere Portal project that uses Hibernate 3.0 to connect to a SQL Server database. There are about 130 Hibernate table classes in this project. They all implement Serializable. None of them declare a serialVersionUID field, so the Eclipse IDE shows a warning for all of these classes. Is there any actual need for these classes to implement Serializable? If so, is there any tool to add a generated serialVersionUID field to a large number of classes at once (just to make the warnings go away) ?

  • How do I find out the expiry date of a SQL Server 2008 trial-install instance?

    So I installed a trial of SQL Server 2008 enterprise edition while waiting for MSDN licenses to come through - I now want to uninstall the trial and replace it with a developer edition installation. However, I'd like to first know how long I have left on the trial. Is there a way to do this programmatically with SQL? I looked at create_date in sys.databases, but these give dates that are in 2003 (which is, I guess, when master and model were originally created).

  • Career day in kindergarten

    I was invited to the kindergarten group of my elder daughter to talk and answer the kids' questions about my profession. There are 26 kids of age 4-6 in the group, plus 3 teachers who are fairly scared of anything related to programming and IT themselves, but bold enough to learn new tricks. I would have about 20-30 minutes, without projector or anything. They have an old computer though, which by its look may be a 486, and I am not even sure if it's functioning. My research turned up excellent earlier threads, with lots of good tips: How would you explain your job to a 5-year old? Career Day: how do I make “computer programmer” sound cool to 8 year olds? What things can I teach a group of children about programming in one day? My situation is different from each of the above though: the latter ones are concerned with older children, while the first one is about talking to a single kid (or elder person)—a group of 20 is a whole different challenge. How can I teach the kids and their teachers about programming in a fun way?

  • How to allow click-through and a cursor in a background app while not taking the active appearance a

    Here are my goals: My application displays an overlay window above all applications' window. The user can draw in the overlay window. The mouse cursor changes to a specific cursor while in the overlay window. The application that has the active appearance before summoning the overlay window still has it while the overlay window is up and usable. The user does not need to click on the overlay window to activate it before they can draw. Drawing in the window does not steal the active appearance away from the application that has it. With LSUIElement, I get #1, #2, #3, and #5. With LSBackgroundOnly, I get #1, #2, #4, and #6. How can I satisify all of these goals without installing an event tap and processing the mouse events myself?   • Python proper use of __str__ and __repr__

    Hey, My current project requires extensive use of bit fields. I found a simple, functional recipe for bit a field class but it was lacking a few features I needed, so I decided to extend it. I've just got to implementing __str__ and __repr__ and I want to make sure I'm following convention. __str__ is supposed to be informal and concice, so I've made it return the bit field's decimal value (i.e. str(bit field 11) would be "3". __repr__ is supposed to be a official representation of the object, so I've made it return the actual bit string (i.e. repr(bit field 11) would be "11"). In your opinion would this implementation meet the conventions for str and repr? Additionally, I have used the bin() function to get the bit string of the value stored in the class. This isn't compatible with Python < 2.6, is there an alternative method? Cheers, Pete

    When I insert an image into OneNote 2007 using C# my images have 'Make Text in Image Searchable' set to Disabled. How do I insert an image with Make Text in Image Searchable enabled, or how do I enable this property after the image is imported. I have already imported a lot of images. How to I make the existing imported images searchable? I already know how to do this manually by right clicking the image and setting the language. The OCR works fine, I just need to do it automatically.

  • How do I swallow the dropdown behavior inside an Expander.Header?

    Hello, I would like to prevent an Expander from expanding/collapsing when users click inside the header area. This is basically the same question as Q 1396153, but I'd appreciate a more favorable answer :) Is there a non-invasive way to do this? I am not sure exactly how to attach behavior to the Expander.Header content to prevent mouseclicks. I'm willing to float in content outside the expander itself via a fixed grid layout, but I'm not keen on the solution. Ideas?   • Possible to InvalidateVisual() on a given region instead of entire WPF control?

    I have a complex WPF control that draws a lot of primitives in its OnRender (it's sort of like a map). When a small portion of it changes, I'd only like to re-issue render commands for the affected elements, instead of running the entire OnRender over. While I'm fine with my OnRender function's performance on a resize or whatever, it's not fast enough for mouse hover-based highlighting of primitives. Currently the only way I know how to force a screen update is to call InvalidateVisual(). No way to send in a dirty rect region to invalidate. Is the lowest granularity of WPF screen composition the UI element? Will I need to do my renders of primitives into an intermediate target and then have that use InvalidateVisual() to update to the screen?

Specifically, since enumerable.ToArray() will build a new array even if the underlying collection already is an array I'm looking for a way of avoiding ToArray() being called twice on the same collection.

  • Uncatchable errors in node.js

    So I'm trying to write a simple TCP socket server that broadcasts information to all connected clients. So when a user connects, they get added to the list of clients, and when the stream emits the close event, they get removed from the client list. This works well, except that sometimes I'm sending a message just as a user disconnects. I've tried wrapping stream.write() in a try/catch block, but no luck. It seems like the error is uncatchable.

    Hi, I am going crazy with this error: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by... Please note that I know about the gazillion results on google and on stack overflow. My problem is the way I've constructed my pages. To keep html separate from php, I use include files. It would be nice if PHP had an alternative way to redirect or had additional parameters to tell it to clear the buffer.

  • iPhone app works hundreds of times, then crashes from memory error on startup, then never works unti

    I have a Cocos2d/openGL iPhone game. It's a universal app and I'm dealing with an occasional but nasty error on the iPad. We are loading a lot of textures up front (3 2048x2048 textures). I'm working on reducing this up front load, but what worries me is I really don't understand the root cause of this crash that permanently breaks the app. This is the deal: 1. App works fine for hundreds of plays on the iPad 2. Eventually (I'm guessing due to other programs using up some memory and not letting go or whatever) the app starts crashing on startup. It just closes again in the middle of loading. 3. The App will now never work again on that iPad, closing immediately every time, until the iPad is restarted. Obviously my app is demanding too much memory up front to work reliably every time, I get that. What I don't get is why when it fails once, it has failed forever until the iPad is restarted. Can anyone explain what is going on here? EDIT: forgot to add organizer crash lags just say low memory, like this every time (I changed my app name to MyAppName below). This does work, at least in GCC and Clang (both with -std=c99), but I'm not sure how it works in C-standard terms. Is this behavior guaranteed by C99? If so, how does C99 guarantee it? If not, at what point does the behavior go from C-defined to GCC-defined?

    Following problem: I need to get the position of a record in the table. Let's say I have five record in the table: Name: john doe, ID: 1 Name: jane doe, ID: 2 Name: Frankie Boy, ID: 4 Name: Johnny, ID: 9 Now, "Frankie Boy" is in the third position in the table. But How to get this information from the SQL server? I could count IDs, but they are not reliable, Frankie has the ID 4, but is in the third position because the record with the ID '3' was deleted. Is there a way? I am aware of ROW_RANK but it would be costly, because I need to select basically the whole set first before I can rank row_rank them. I am using MS SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • Curl Wrapper Class does not return any data even though it worked previously?

    We changed servers and installed all necessary software and just cannot seem to pin point what is going on. A simple CURL request does not return anything. Command Line CURL commands work just fine. We are using a wrapper for CURL utilizing streams. Do PHP streams require any out of the ordinary configuration? We are using the latest Lamp stack.
