  • Round date to 10 minutes interval

    - by Peter Lang
    I have a DATE column that I want to round to the next-lower 10 minute interval in a query (see example below). I managed to do it by truncating the seconds and then subtracting the last digit of minutes. WITH test_data AS ( SELECT TO_DATE('2010-01-01 10:00:00', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') d FROM dual UNION SELECT TO_DATE('2010-01-01 10:05:00', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') d FROM dual UNION SELECT TO_DATE('2010-01-01 10:09:59', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') d FROM dual UNION SELECT TO_DATE('2010-01-01 10:10:00', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') d FROM dual UNION SELECT TO_DATE('2099-01-01 10:00:33', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') d FROM dual ) -- #end of test-data SELECT d, TRUNC(d, 'MI') - MOD(TO_CHAR(d, 'MI'), 10) / (24 * 60) FROM test_data And here is the result: 01.01.2010 10:00:00    01.01.2010 10:00:00 01.01.2010 10:05:00    01.01.2010 10:00:00 01.01.2010 10:09:59    01.01.2010 10:00:00 01.01.2010 10:10:00    01.01.2010 10:10:00 01.01.2099 10:00:33    01.01.2099 10:00:00 Works as expected, but is there a better way? EDIT: I was curious about performance, so I did the following test with 500.000 rows and (not really) random dates. I am going to add the results as comments to the provided solutions. DECLARE t TIMESTAMP := SYSTIMESTAMP; BEGIN FOR i IN ( WITH test_data AS ( SELECT SYSDATE + ROWNUM / 5000 d FROM dual CONNECT BY ROWNUM <= 500000 ) SELECT TRUNC(d, 'MI') - MOD(TO_CHAR(d, 'MI'), 10) / (24 * 60) FROM test_data ) LOOP NULL; END LOOP; dbms_output.put_line( SYSTIMESTAMP - t ); END; This approach took 03.24 s.

  • Is it necessary to mysql real escape when using alter table?

    - by cgwebprojects
    I noticed the other day that I cannot bind variables when using PDO with ALTER TABLE for example the following example will not work, $q = $dbc -> prepare("ALTER TABLE emblems ADD ? TINYINT(1) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', ADD ? DATETIME NOT NULL"); $q -> execute(array($emblemDB, $emblemDB . 'Date')); So is it necessary to use mysql_real_escape string and do it like below, // ESCAPE NAME FOR MYSQL INSERTION $emblemDB = mysql_real_escape_string($emblemDB); // INSERT EMBLEM DETAILS INTO DATABASE $q = $dbc -> prepare("ALTER TABLE emblems ADD " . $emblemDB . " TINYINT(1) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', ADD " . $emblemDB . "Date DATETIME NOT NULL"); $q -> execute(); Or do I not need to add in mysql_real_escape_string? As the only thing the query can do is ADD columns? Thanks

  • Unable to insert DateTime format into database

    - by melvg
    I'm unable to insert the DateTime into my database. Am i writing the statement wrongly? Apparently without the DateTime, I am able to insert into the database string dateAndTime = date + " " + time; CultureInfo provider = CultureInfo.InvariantCulture; DateTime theDateTime = DateTime.ParseExact(dateAndTime, "d MMMM yyyy hh:mm tt", provider); //Create a connection, replace the data source name with the name of the SQL Anywhere Demo Database that you installed SAConnection myConnection = new SAConnection("UserID=dba;Password=sql;DatabaseName=emaDB;ServerName=emaDB"); //open the connection ; myConnection.Open(); //Create a command object. SACommand insertAccount = myConnection.CreateCommand(); //Specify a query. insertAccount.CommandText = ("INSERT INTO [meetingMinutes] (title,location,perioddate,periodtime,attenders,agenda,accountID,facilitator,datetime) VALUES ('"+title+"','" + location + "', '" + date + "','" + time + "', '" + attender + "','" + agenda + "', '" + accountID + "','" + facilitator + "','" +theDateTime+ "')"); try { insertAccount.ExecuteNonQuery(); if (title == "" || agenda == "") { btnSubmit.Attributes.Add("onclick", "displayIfSuccessfulInsert();"); //ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, GetType(), "error", "alert('Please ensure to have a title or agenda!');", true); } else { btnSubmit.Attributes.Add("onclick", "displayIfSuccessfulInsert();"); Response.Redirect("HomePage.aspx"); //ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this, this.GetType(), "Redit", "alert('Minutes Created!'); window.location='" + Request.ApplicationPath + "/HomePage.aspx';", true); } } catch (Exception exception) { Console.WriteLine(exception); } finally { myConnection.Close(); } It does not insert the SQL into my database.

  • (Rails) Creating multi-dimensional hashes/arrays from a data set...?

    - by humble_coder
    Hi All, I'm having a bit of an issue wrapping my head around something. I'm currently using a hacked version of Gruff in order to accommodate "Scatter Plots". That said, the data is entered in the form of: g.data("Person1",[12,32,34,55,23],[323,43,23,43,22]) ...where the first item is the ENTITY, the second item is X-COORDs, and the third item is Y-COORDs. I currently have a recordset of items from a table with the columns: POINT, VALUE, TIMESTAMP. Due to the "complex" calculations involved I must grab everything using a single query or risk way too much DB activity. That said, I have a list of items for which I need to dynamically collect all data from the recordset into a hash (or array of arrays) for the creation of the data items. I was thinking something like the following: @h={} e = Events.find_by_sql(my_query) e.each do |event| @h["#{event.Point}"][x] = event.timestamp @h["#{event.Point}"][y] = event.value end Obviously that's not the correct syntax, but that's where my brain is going. Could someone clean this up for me or suggest a more appropriate mechanism by which to accomplish this? Basically the main goal is to keep data for each pointname grouped (but remember the recordset has them all). Much appreciated. EDIT 1 g = Gruff::Scatter.new("600x350") g.title = self.name e = Event.find_by_sql(@sql) h ={} e.each do |event| h[event.Point.to_s] ||= {} h[event.Point.to_s].merge!({event.Timestamp.to_i,event.Value}) end h.each do |p| logger.info p[1].values.inspect g.data(p[0],p[1].keys,p[1].values) end g.write(@chart_file)

  • can I add properties to a typo3 extbase domain model object?

    - by The Newbie Qs
    I want to store a username in a coupon object, each coupon object already has the uid of the user who created it. I can loop over the coupon objects and read the associated usernames from fe_users but how then will I save those usernames into the coupons so when they are passed to the template the usernames can be read like so coupon.username, or in some other easy way so each username will appear on the page with the right coupon as they are all printed out in a table? If I was doing basic php instead of typo3 i would just define a query but what is the typo3 v4.5 way? My code so far - which dies on the line where I try to assign the new property --creatorname -- to the $coup object. public function listAction() { $coupons = $this->couponRepository->findAll(); // @var Tx_Extbase_Domain_Repository_FrontendUserRepository $userRepository */ $userRepository = $this->objectManager->get("Tx_Extbase_Domain_Repository_FrontendUserRepository"); foreach ($coupons as $coup) { echo '<br />test '.$coup->getCreator(); echo '<br />count = '.$userRepository->countAll().'<br />'; $newObject = $userRepository->findByUid( intval($coup->getCreator())); //var_dump($newObject); var_dump($coup); echo '<br />getUsername '.$newObject->getUsername() ; $coup['creatorname'] = $newObject->getUsername(); echo '<br />creatorname '.$coup['creatorname'] ; } $this->view->assign('coupons', $coupons); }

  • How to work with CTE. There is some error related to anchor.

    - by Shantanu Gupta
    I am creating a hierarchy representaion of a column. But an error occurs Details are Msg 240, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Types don't match between the anchor and the recursive part in column "DISPLAY" of recursive query "CTE". I know there is some typecasting error. But I dont know how to remove error. Please just dont only sort out my error. I need explanation why this error is coming. When this error occurs. I am trying to sort table on the basis of sort col that i m introducing. I want to add '-' at every level and want to sort accordingly. Please help WITH CTE (PK_CATEGORY_ID, [DESCRIPTION], FK_CATEGORY_ID, DISPLAY, SORT, DEPTH) AS ( SELECT PK_CATEGORY_ID, [DESCRIPTION], FK_CATEGORY_ID, '-' AS DISPLAY, '--' AS SORT, 0 AS DEPTH FROM dbo.L_CATEGORY_TYPE WHERE FK_CATEGORY_ID IS NULL UNION ALL SELECT T.PK_CATEGORY_ID, T.[DESCRIPTION], T.FK_CATEGORY_ID, CAST(DISPLAY+T.[DESCRIPTION] AS VARCHAR(1000)), '--' AS SORT, C.DEPTH +1 FROM dbo.L_CATEGORY_TYPE T JOIN CTE C ON C.PK_CATEGORY_ID = T.FK_CATEGORY_ID --SELECT T.PK_CATEGORY_ID, C.SORT+T.[DESCRIPTION], T.FK_CATEGORY_ID --, CAST('--' + C.SORT AS VARCHAR(1000)) AS SORT, CAST(DEPTH +1 AS INT) AS DEPTH --FROM dbo.L_CATEGORY_TYPE T JOIN CTE C ON C.FK_CATEGORY_ID = T.PK_CATEGORY_ID ) SELECT PK_CATEGORY_ID, [DESCRIPTION], FK_CATEGORY_ID, DISPLAY, SORT, DEPTH FROM CTE ORDER BY SORT

  • How to set up a load/stress test for a web site?

    - by Ryan
    I've been tasked with stress/load testing our company web site out of the blue and know nothing about doing so. Every search I make on google for "how to load test a web site" just comes back with various companies and software to physically do the load testing. For now I'm more interested in how to actually go about setting up a load test like what I should take into account prior to load testing, what pages within my site I should be testing load against and what things I'm going to want to monitor when doing the test. Our web site is on a multi-tier system complete with a separate database server (IIS 7 Web Server, SQL Server 2000 db). I imagine I'd want to monitor both the web server and the database server for testing load however when setting up scenarios to load test the web server I'd have to use pages that query the database to see any load on the database server at the same time. Are web servers and database servers generally tested simultaneously or are they done as separate tests? As you can see I'm pretty clueless as to the whole operation so any incite as to how to go about this would be very helpful. FYI I have been tinkering with Pylot and was able to create and run a scenario against our site but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the results or if the scenario I created is even a scenario worth measuring for our site. Thanks in advance.

  • Linq-to-XML explicit casting in a generic method

    - by vlad
    I've looked for a similar question, but the only one that was close didn't help me in the end. I have an XML file that looks like this: <Fields> <Field name="abc" value="2011-01-01" /> <Field name="xyz" value="" /> <Field name="tuv" value="123.456" /> </Fields> I'm trying to use Linq-to-XML to get the values from these fields. The values can be of type Decimal, DateTime, String and Int32. I was able to get the fields one by one using a relatively simple query. For example, I'm getting the 'value' from the field with the name 'abc' using the following: private DateTime GetValueFromAttribute(IEnumerable<XElement> fields, String attName) { return (from field in fields where field.Attribute("name").Value == "abc" select (DateTime)field.Attribute("value")).FirstOrDefault() } this is placed in a separate function that simply returns this value, and everything works fine (since I know that there is only one element with the name attribute set to 'abc'). however, since I have to do this for decimals and integers and dates, I was wondering if I can make a generic function that works in all cases. this is where I got stuck. here's what I have so far: private T GetValueFromAttribute<T>(IEnumerable<XElement> fields, String attName) { return (from field in fields where field.Attribute("name").Value == attName select (T)field.Attribute("value").Value).FirstOrDefault(); } this doesn't compile because it doesn't know how to convert from String to T. I tried boxing and unboxing (i.e. select (T) (Object) field.Attribute("value").Value but that throws a runtime Specified cast is not valid exception as it's trying to convert the String to a DateTime, for instance. Is this possible in a generic function? can I put a constraint on the generic function to make it work? or do I have to have separate functions to take advantage of Linq-to-XML's explicit cast operators?

  • IPad SQLite Push and Pull Data from external MS SQL Server DB

    - by MattyD
    This carries on from my previous post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4182664/ipad-app-pull-and-push-relational-data). My plan is that when the ipad application starts I am going to pull data (config data i.e. Departments, Types etc etc relational data that is used across the system) from a webhosted MS SQL Server DB via a webservice and populate it into an SQL Lite DB on the IPad. Then when I load a listing I will pull the data over the line again via a webservice and populate it into the SQL Lite db on the ipad (than just run select commands to populate the listing). My questions are: 1. What is the most efficient way to transfer data across the line via the web? Everyone seems to do it a different way. My idea is that I will have a webService for each type of data pull (e.g. RetrieveContactListing) that will query the db and than convert that data into "something" to send across the line. My question really is what is the "something" that it should be converting into? 2. Everyone talks about odata services. Is this suited for applications where complex read and writes are needed? Ive created a simple iphone app before that talked to an sql server db (i just sent my own structured xml across the line) but now with this app the data calls are going to be a lot larger so efficiency is key.

  • Silverlight 4 webclient authentication - anyone have this working yet?

    - by Toran Billups
    So one of the best parts about the new Silverlight 4 beta is that they finally implemented the big missing feature of the networking stack - Network Credentials! In the below I have a working request setup, but for some reason I get a "security error" when the request comes back - is this because twitter.com rejected my api call or something that I'm missing in code? It might be good to point out that when I watch this code execute via fiddler it shows that the xml file for cross domain is pulled down successfully, but that is the last request shown by fiddler ... public void RequestTimelineFromTwitterAPI() { WebRequest.RegisterPrefix("https://", System.Net.Browser.WebRequestCreator.ClientHttp); WebClient myService = new WebClient(); myService.AllowReadStreamBuffering = true; myService.UseDefaultCredentials = false; myService.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password"); myService.UseDefaultCredentials = false; myService.OpenReadCompleted += new OpenReadCompletedEventHandler(TimelineRequestCompleted); myService.OpenReadAsync(new Uri("https://twitter.com/statuses/friends_timeline.xml")); } public void TimelineRequestCompleted(object sender, System.Net.OpenReadCompletedEventArgs e) { //anytime I query for e.Result I get a security error }

  • Not getting key value from Identity column back after inserting new row with SubSonic ActiveRecord

    - by mikedevenney
    I'm sure I'm missing the obvious answer here, but could use a hand. I'm new to SubSonic and using version 3. I've got myself to the point of being able to query and insert, but I'm stuck with how I would get the value of the identity column back after my insert. I saw another post that mentioned Linq Templates. I'm not using those (at least I don't think I am...?) TIA ... UPDATE ... So I've been debugging through my code watching how the SubSonic code works and I found where the indentity column is being ignored. I use int as the datatype for my ID columns in the database and set them as identity. Since int is a non-nullable data type in c# the logical test in the Add method (public void Add(IDataProvider provider)) that checks if there is a value in the key column by doing a (key==null) could be the issue. The code that gets the new value for the identity field is in the 'true path', since an int can't be null and I use ints as my identity column data types this test will never pass. The ID field for my object has a 0 in it that I didn't put there. I assume it's set during the initialization of the object. Am I off base here? Is the answer to change my data types in the database? Another question (more a curiosity). I noticed that some of the properties in the generated classes are declared with a ? after the datatype. I'm not familiar with this declaration construct... what gives? There are some declared as an int (non key fields) and others that are declared as int? (key fields). Does this have something to do with how they're treated at initialization? Any help is appreciated! --BUMP--

  • Initializing static pointer in templated class.

    - by Anthony
    This is difficult for me to formulate in a Google query (at least one that gives me what I'm looking for) so I've had some trouble finding an answer. I'm sure I'm not the first to ask though. Consider a class like so: template < class T > class MyClass { private: static T staticObject; static T * staticPointerObject; }; ... template < class T > T MyClass<T>::staticObject; // <-- works ... template < class T > T * MyClass<T>::staticPointerObject = NULL; // <-- cannot find symbol staticPointerObject. I am having trouble figuring out why I cannot successfully create that pointer object. Edit: The above code is all specified in the header, and the issue I mentioned is an error in the link step, so it is not finding the specific symbol.

  • unexpected behaviour of object stored in web service Session

    - by draconis
    Hi. I'm using Session variables inside a web service to maintain state between successive method calls by an external application called QBWC. I set this up by decorating my web service methods with this attribute: [WebMethod(EnableSession = true)] I'm using the Session variable to store an instance of a custom object called QueueManager. The QueueManager has a property called ChangeQueue which looks like this: [Serializable] public class QueueManager { ... public Queue<QBChange> ChangeQueue { get; set; } ... where QBChange is a custom business object belonging to my web service. Now, every time I get a call to a method in my web service, I use this code to retrieve my QueueManager object and access my queue: QueueManager qm = (QueueManager)Session[ticket]; then I remove an object from the queue, using qm.dequeue() and then I save the modified query manager object (modified because it contains one less object in the queue) back to the Session variable, like so: Session[ticket] = qm; ready for the next web service method call using the same ticket. Now here's the thing: if I comment out this last line //Session[ticket] = qm; , then the web service behaves exactly the same way, reducing the size of the queue between method calls. Now why is that? The web service seems to be updating a class contained in serialized form in a Session variable without being asked to. Why would it do that? When I deserialize my Queuemanager object, does the qm variable hold a reference to the serialized object inside the Session[ticket] variable?? This seems very unlikely.

  • Append data to same text file

    - by Manu
    SimpleDateFormat formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("ddMMyyyy_HHmmSS"); String strCurrDate = formatter.format(new java.util.Date()); String strfileNm = "Customer_" + strCurrDate + ".txt"; String strFileGenLoc = strFileLocation + "/" + strfileNm; String Query1="select '0'||to_char(sysdate,'YYYYMMDD')||'123456789' class_code from dual"; String Query2="select '0'||to_char(sysdate,'YYYYMMDD')||'123456789' class_code from dual"; try { Statement stmt = null; ResultSet rs = null; Statement stmt1 = null; ResultSet rs1 = null; stmt = conn.createStatement(); stmt1 = conn.createStatement(); rs = stmt.executeQuery(Query1); rs1 = stmt1.executeQuery(Query2); File f = new File(strFileGenLoc); OutputStream os = (OutputStream)new FileOutputStream(f,true); String encoding = "UTF8"; OutputStreamWriter osw = new OutputStreamWriter(os, encoding); BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(osw); while (rs.next() ) { bw.write(rs.getString(1)==null?   • Should a C++ constructor do real work?

    - by Wade Williams
    I'm strugging with some advice I have in the back of my mind but for which I can't remember the reasoning. I seem to remember at some point reading some advice (can't remember the source) that C++ constructors should not do real work. Rather, they should initialize variables only. The advice when on to explain that real work should be done in some sort of init() method, to be called separately after the instance was created. The situation is I have a class that represents a hardware device. It makes logical sense to me for the constructor to call the routines that query the device in order to build up the instance variables that describe the device. In other words, once new instantiates the object, the developer receives an object which is ready to be used, no separate call to object-init() required. Is there a good reason why constructors shouldn't do real work? Obviously it could slow allocation time, but that wouldn't be any different if calling a separate method immediately after allocation. Just trying to figure out what gotchas I not currently considering that might have lead to such advice.

  • Execute a block of database querys

    - by Nightmare
    I have the following task to complete: In my program a have a block of database querys or questions. I want to execute these questions and wait for the result of all questions or catch an error if one question fails! My Question object looks like this (simplified): public class DbQuestion(String sql) { [...] } [...] //The answer is just a holder for custom data... public void SetAnswer(DbAnswer answer) { //Store the answer in the question and fire a event to the listeners this.OnAnswered(EventArgs.Empty); } [...] public void SetError() { //Signal an Error in this query! this.OnError(EventArgs.Empty); } So every question fired to the database has a listener that waits for the parsed result. Now I want to fire some questions asynchronous to the database (max. 5 or so) and fire an event with the data from all questions or an error if only one question throws one! Which is the best or a good way to accomplish this task? Can I really execute more then one question parallel and stop all my work when one question throws an error? I think I need some inspiration on this... Just a note: I´m working with .NET framework 2.0

  • reporting tool/viewer for large datasets

    - by FrustratedWithFormsDesigner
    I have a data processing system that generates very large reports on the data it processes. By "large" I mean that a "small" execution of this system produces about 30 MB of reporting data when dumped into a CSV file and a large dataset is about 130-150 MB (I'm sure someone out there has a bigger idea of "large" but that's not the point... ;) Excel has the ideal interface for the report consumers in the form of its Data Lists: users can filter and segment the data on-the-fly to see the specific details that they are interested in - they can also add notes and markup to the reports, create charts, graphs, etc... They know how to do all this and it's much easier to let them do it if we just give them the data. Excel was great for the small test datasets, but it cannot handle these large ones. Does anyone know of a tool that can provide a similar interface as Excel data lists, but that can handle much larger files? The next tool I tried was MS Access, and found that the Access file bloats hugely (30 MB input file leads to about 70 MB Access file, and when I open the file, run a report and close it the file's at 120-150 MB!), the import process is slow and very manual (currently, the CSV files are created by the same plsql script that runs the main process so there's next to no intervention on my part). I also tried an Access database with linked tables to the database tables that store the report data and that was many times slower (for some reason, sqlplus could query and generate the report file in a minute or soe while Access would take anywhere from 2-5 minutes for the same data) (If it helps, the data processing system is written in PL/SQL and runs on Oracle 10g.)

  • Activetopics - Get max 5 topics per category

    - by Arjen
    Hey, I want to get the 5 latest active topics within several category's. Each topic has a subcatid and this subcatid relates to a catid. What I want is to get the 5 active topics within each catid. I'm trying to use the query below, but this isn't working at all: set @num := 0, @catid := 0; SELECT forum_posts.topicid, forum_topics.titel, forum_topics.sticky, forum_topics.gesloten, MAX(forum_cats.id) AS catid, MAX(forum_cats.titel) AS cattitel, MAX(forum_subcats.id) AS subcatid, MAX(forum_posts.id) AS maxid, DATE_FORMAT(MAX(forum_posts.datum), '%d-%m-%Y om %H:%i uur') AS datum, UNIX_TIMESTAMP(MAX(forum_posts.datum)) AS laatstereactieunix, (COUNT(forum_posts.id) - 1) AS reactieaantal, @num := IF(@catid = MAX(forum_cats.id), @num + 1, 1) AS row_number, @catid := MAX(forum_cats.id) AS dummy FROM forum_posts INNER JOIN forum_topics ON forum_topics.id = forum_posts.topicid INNER JOIN forum_subcats ON forum_subcats.id = forum_topics.subcat INNER JOIN forum_cats ON forum_cats.id = forum_subcats.cat WHERE forum_cats.id IN (1) AND forum_topics.gesloten != '1' GROUP BY forum_posts.topicid, forum_topics.titel, forum_topics.sticky, forum_topics.gesloten HAVING row_number <= 5 ORDER BY forum_cats.id ASC, MAX(forum_posts.datum) DESC When executing this code I get always the same number (1) for row_number, so this is not the result I want. Does anyone know how I can get this work? Thanks!

  • Reporting Services 2005 - Parameter reliant on cascading parameters

    - by sHr0oMaN
    Good day I have the following: In a SSRS 2005 report I have three report parameters: FinancialPeriodType ("Month" or "Week" in a DropDownList), FinancialPeriod (cascading DropDownList populated depending on first selection) and another parameter, OpeningBalance, of type float. The first two parameters are cascading i.e. the first parameter is used by the query populating the second's available values. This works fine. What I'm attemping to do is default the value of OpeningBalance to a value from a dataset populated by a stored procedure which takes in the first two parameters. However as soon as I select a value for the first parameter, I get the following error: An error occurred during report processing. The value for the report parameter 'OpeningBalance' is not valid for its type.' I've tried setting the default of the second parameter to be a meaningful default (something like 200901) as well as defaulting the second parameter in the SQL store procedure with no affect. Using SQL Profiler I've noticed that selecting a value for the first parameter doesn't even execute the SQL used to obtain available values for the second parameter.

    MySQL v5.0.58. Tables, with foreign key constraints etc and other non-relevant details omitted for brevity: CREATE TABLE `fixture` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `competition_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `name` varchar(50) NOT NULL, `scheduled` datetime default NULL, `played` datetime default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ); CREATE TABLE `result` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `fixture_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `team_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `score` int(11) NOT NULL, `place` int(11) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ); CREATE TABLE `team` ( `id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `name` varchar(50) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) ); Where: A draw will set result.place to 0 result.place will otherwise contain an integer representing first place, second place, and so on The task is to return a string describing the most recently played result in a given competition for a given team. The format should be "def Team X,Team Y" if the given team was victorious, "lost to Team X" if the given team lost, and "drew with Team X" if there was a draw. And yes, in theory there could be more than two teams per fixture (though 1 v 1 will be the most common case). This works, but feels really inefficient: SELECT CONCAT( (SELECT CASE `result`.`place` WHEN 0 THEN "drew with" WHEN 1 THEN "def" ELSE "lost to" END FROM `result` WHERE `result`.`fixture_id` = (SELECT `fixture`.`id` FROM `fixture` LEFT JOIN `result` ON `result`.`fixture_id` = `fixture`.`id` WHERE `fixture`.`competition_id` = 2 AND `result`.`team_id` = 1 ORDER BY `fixture`.`played` DESC LIMIT 1) AND `result`.`team_id` = 1), ' ', (SELECT GROUP_CONCAT(`team`.`name`) FROM `fixture` LEFT JOIN `result` ON `result`.`fixture_id` = `fixture`.`id` LEFT JOIN `team` ON `result`.`team_id` = `team`.`id` WHERE `fixture`.`id` = (SELECT `fixture`.`id` FROM `fixture` LEFT JOIN `result` ON `result`.`fixture_id` = `fixture`.`id` WHERE `fixture`.`competition_id` = 2 AND `result`.`team_id` = 1 ORDER BY `fixture`.`played` DESC LIMIT 1) AND `team`.`id` != 1) ) Have I missed something really obvious, or should I simply not try to do this in one query? Or does the current difficulty reflect a poor table design?

  • Pattern for version-specific implementations of a Java class

    - by Mike Monkiewicz
    So here's my conundrum. I am programming a tool that needs to work on old versions of our application. I have the code to the application, but can not alter any of the classes. To pull information out of our database, I have a DTO of sorts that is populated by Hibernate. It consumes a data object for version 1.0 of our app, cleverly named DataObject. Below is the DTO class. public class MyDTO { private MyWrapperClass wrapper; public MyDTO(DataObject data) { wrapper = new MyWrapperClass(data); } } The DTO is instantiated through a Hibernate query as follows: select new com.foo.bar.MyDTO(t1.data) from mytable t1 Now, a little logic is needed on top of the data object, so I made a wrapper class for it. Note the DTO stores an instance of the wrapper class, not the original data object. public class MyWrapperClass { private DataObject data; public MyWrapperClass(DataObject data) { this.data = data; } public String doSomethingImportant() { ... version-specific logic ... } } This works well until I need to work on version 2.0 of our application. Now DataObject in the two versions are very similar, but not the same. This resulted in different sub classes of MyWrapperClass, which implement their own version-specific doSomethingImportant(). Still doing okay. But how does myDTO instantiate the appropriate version-specific MyWrapperClass? Hibernate is in turn instantiating MyDTO, so it's not like I can @Autowire a dependency in Spring. I would love to reuse MyDTO (and my dozens of other DTOs) for both versions of the tool, without having to duplicate the class. Don't repeat yourself, and all that. I'm sure there's a very simple pattern I'm missing that would help this. Any suggestions?

  • SQL problem - select accross multiple tables (user groups)

    - by morpheous
    I have a db schema which looks something like this: create table user (id int, name varchar(32)); create table group (id int, name varchar(32)); create table group_member (foobar_id int, user_id int, flag int); I want to write a query that allows me to so the following: Given a valid user id (UID), fetch the ids of all users that are in the same group as the specified user id (UID) AND have group_member.flag=3. Rather than just have the SQL. I want to learn how to think like a Db programmer. As a coder, SQL is my weakest link (since I am far more comfortable with imperative languages than declarative ones) - but I want to change that. Anyway here are the steps I have identified as necessary to break down the task. I would be grateful if some SQL guru can demonstrate the simple SQL statements - i.e. atomic SQL statements, one for each of the identified subtasks below, and then finally, how I can combine those statements to make the ONE statement that implements the required functionality. Here goes (assume specified user_id [UID] = 1): //Subtask #1. Fetch list of all groups of which I am a member Select group.id from user inner join group_member where user.id=group_member.user_id and user.id=1 //Subtask #2 Fetch a list of all members who are members of the groups I am a member of (i.e. groups in subtask #1) Not sure about this ... select user.id from user, group_member gm1, group_member gm2, ... [Stuck] //Subtask #3 Get list of users that satisfy criteria group_member.flag=3 Select user.id from user inner join group_member where user.id=group_member.user_id and user.id=1 and group_member.flag=3 Once I have the SQL for subtask2, I'd then like to see how the complete SQL statement is built from these subtasks (you dont have to use the SQL in the subtask, it just a way of explaining the steps involved - also, my SQL may be incorrect/inefficient, if so, please feel free to correct it, and point out what was wrong with it). Thanks

  • Bad idea to have the same object, have a different side effect after method call.

    - by Nathan W
    Hi all, I'm having a bit of a gesign issue(again). Say I have this Buttonpad object: now this object is a wrapper object over one in a com object. At the moment it has a method on it called CreateInto(IComObject). Now to make a new button pad in the Com Object. You do: ButtonPad pad = new ButtonPad(); pad.Title = "Hello"; // Set some more properties. pad.CreateInto(Cominstance); The createinfo method will excute the right commands to buid the button pad in the com object. After it has been created it any calls against it are foward to the underlying object for change so: pad.Title = "New title"; will call the com object to set the title and also set the internal title variable. Basically any calls before the CreateInfo method only affect the .NET object anything after has the side effect of calling the com object also. I'm not very good at sequence diagrams but here is my attempt to explain whats going on: This doesn't feel good to me, it feels like I'm lying to the user about what the button pad does. I was going to have a object called WrappedButtonPad, which is returned from CreateInto and the user could make calls against that to make changes to the Com Object, but I feel having two objects that almost do the same thing but only differ by names might be even worse. Are these valid designs, or am I right to be worried? How else would you handle a object the can create and query a com object?

  • Advice on Linq to SQL mapping object design

    - by fearofawhackplanet
    I hope the title and following text are clear, I'm not very familiar with the correct terms so please correct me if I get anything wrong. I'm using Linq ORM for the first time and am wondering how to address the following. Say I have two DB tables: User ---- Id Name Phone ----- Id UserId Model The Linq code generator produces a bunch of entity classes. I then write my own classes and interfaces which wrap these Linq classes: class DatabaseUser : IUser { public DatabaseUser(User user) { _user = user; } public Guid Id { get { return _user.Id; } } ... etc } so far so good. Now it's easy enough to find a users phones from Phones.Where(p => p.User = user) but surely comsumers of the API shouldn't need to be writing their own Linq queries to get at data, so I should wrap this query in a function or property somewhere. So the question is, in this example, would you add a Phones property to IUser or not? In other words, should my interface specifically be modelling my database objects (in which case Phones doesn't belong in IUser), or are they actually simply providing a set of functions and properties which are conceptually associated with a User (in which case it does)? There seems drawbacks to both views, but I'm wondering if there is a standard approach to the problem. Or just any general words of wisdom you could share. My first thought was to use extension methods but in fact that doesn't work in this case.

  • Is encrypting session id (or other authenticate value) in cookie useful at all?

    - by Ji
    In web development, when session state is enabled, a session id is stored in cookie(in cookieless mode, query string will be used instead). In asp.net, the session id is encrypted automatically. There are plenty of topics on the internet regarding how you should encrypt your cookie, including session id. I can understand why you want to encrypt private info such as DOB, but any private info should not be stored in cookie at first place. So for other cookie values such as session id, what is the purpose encryption? Does it add security at all? no matter how you secure it, it will be sent back to server for decryption. Be be more specific, For authentication purpose, turn off session, i don't want to deal with session time out any more store some sort of id value in the cookie, on the server side, check if the id value exists and matches, if it is, authenticate user. let the cookie value expire when browser session is ended, this way. vs Asp.net form authentication mechanism (it relies on session or session id, i think) does latter one offer better security?
