  • Improving performance on data pasting 2000 rows with validations

    - by Lohit
I have N rows (which could be nothing less than 1000) on an excel spreadsheet. And in this sheet our project has 150 columns like this: Now, our application needs data to be copied (using normal Ctrl+C) and pasted (using Ctrl+V) from the excel file sheet on our GUI sheet. Copy pasting 1000 records takes around 5-6 seconds which is okay for our requirement, but the problem is when we need to make sure the data entered is valid. So we have to validate data in each row generate appropriate error messages and format the data as per requirement. So we need to at runtime parse and evaluate data in each row. Now all the formatting of data and validations come from the back-end database and we have it in a data-table (dtValidateAndFormatConditions). The conditions would be around 50. So you can see how slow this whole process becomes since N X 150 X 50 operations are required to complete this whole process. Initially it took approximately 2-3 minutes but now i have reduced it to 20 - 30 seconds. However i have increased the speed by making an expression parser of my own - and not by any algorithm, is there any other way i can improve performance, by using Divide and Conquer or some other mechanism. Currently i am not really sure how to go about this. Here is what part of my code looks like: public virtual void ValidateAndFormatOnCopyPaste(DataTable DtCopied, int CurRow) { foreach (DataRow dRow in dtValidateAndFormatConditions.Rows) { string Condition = dRow["Condition"]; string FormatValue = Value = dRow["Value"]; GetValidatedFormattedData(DtCopied, ref Condition, ref FormatValue ,iRowIndex); Condition = Parse(Condition); dRow["Condition"] = Condition; FormatValue = Parse(FormatValue ); dRow["Value"] = FormatValue; } } The above code gets called row-wise like this: public override void ValidateAndFormat(DataTable dtChangedRecords, CellRange cr) { int iRowStart = cr.Row, iRowEnd = cr.Row + cr.RowCount; for (int iRow = iRowStart; iRow < iRowEnd; iRow++) { ValidateAndFormatOnCopyPaste(dtChangedRecords,iRow); } } Please know my question needs a more algorithmic solution than code optimization, however any answers containing code related optimizations will be appreciated as well. (Tagged Linq because although not seen i have been using linq in some parts of my code).

  • Convert void* representation of a dword to wstring

    - by graham.reeds
I am having dumb monday so my apologies for posting such a newbie-like question. I am using CRegKey.QueryValue to return a dword value from the registry. QueryValue writes the value into void* pData and the length into ULONG* pnBytes. Now there is a way of getting it from pData into a wstring probably via stringstream. The closest I came was getting the result as a hex string. I was about to work on converting the hex representation to a dword and then from there to a wstring when I decided that was just dumb and ask on here instead of wasting another hour of my life on the problem.

  • Where can I find a good guide to writing C Collections?

    - by Mike Axiak
I remember having read a very good guide to writing collections. By that I mean, it described using macros to generate types with type parameters, kind of like C++ templates. I'm not sure if it was written by Rusty Russell, but it was someone I recognized. It was posted on hackernews or proggit... I wanted to write a new C library and has searched google for the past 30 min for this guide to no avail. Anybody remember?

  • Visual Studio Debugger Voodoo

    - by LoveMeSomeCode
Ok, maybe this isn't so amazing considering I don't really understand how the debugger works in the first place, let alone Edit and Continue, which is totally amazing. But I was wondering if anyone knew what the debugger is doing with variable declarations in this scenario. I can be debugging through my code, move the line of execution ahead - past a variables initial declaration and assignment, and the code still runs ok. If it's a value type it will have it's default value, for a ref type, null. So if I create a function that uses a variable before it's declared it won't compile, but if I use the debugger to run it that way it will still run without error. Why is this? And is this related to the fact that you can't put a breakpoint on a declaration?

  • Checked equivalent to IllegalArgumentException?

    - by jv1975oid
I have a method that takes an enum as a parameter and returns some information dependent on that parameter. However, that enum contains some values which should not be handled, and should raise an error condition. Currently the method throws an IllegalArgumentException but I would like this to be a checked exception to force callers to catch it (and return gracefully, logging an error). Is there something suitable or should I create my own Exception subclass? I'm open to other patterns as well. A reasonable reaction would be that all values of the enum should be handled, but that isn't the case. When a new value is added to the enum, I want to make sure that this method does the right thing - alerting a human is preferable to using some default return value in this case. Thanks for any advice.

  • Input not firing in jsp page

    - by GigaPr
Hi, i have been using the spring mvc frameworks lately for a university project. Could you tell me why this work <FORM METHOD=POST ACTION="SaveName.jsp"> <input type="image" class="floatR marginTMinus10" src="images/delete.png" name="image" value="${rssItem.id}" alt="Delete"/> </FORM> while this not <input type="image" class="floatR marginTMinus10" src="images/delete.png" name="image" value="${rssItem.id}" alt="Delete"/> does it mean a button has to be in a form to work? Can i use a button? if yes how do i handle the event in the controller? thanks

  • Detecting regional settings (List Separator) from web

    - by Toms Mikoss
After having the unpleasant surprise that Comma Seperated Value (CSV) files are not necessarily comma-separated, I'm trying to find out if there is any way to detect what the regional settings list separator value is on the client machine from http request. Scenario is as follows: A user can download some data in CSV format from web site (RoR, if it matters). That CSV file is generated on the fly, sent to the user, and most of the time double-clicked and opened in MS Excel on Windows machine at the destination. Now, if the user has ',' set as the list separator, the data is properly arranged in columns, but if any other separator (';' is widely used here) is set, it all just gets thrown into a single column. So, is there any way to detect what separator is used on the client machine, and generate the file accordingly? I have a sinking feeling that it is not, but I'd like to be sure before I pass the 'can't be done, sorry' line to the customer :)

  • Python vs. Java performance (runtime speed)

    - by Bijan
Ignoring all the characteristics of each languages and focusing SOLELY on speed, which language is better performance-wise? You'd think this would be a rather simple question to answer, but I haven't found a decent one. I'm aware that some types of operations may be faster with python, and vice-versa, but I cannot find any detailed information on this. Can anyone shed some light on the performance differences?

  • Why the property is not called on Binding in WPF?

    - by azamsharp
I am not sure why the property is not being called on Binding. Here is the code: <myusercontrol Text ="{Binding Description, UpdateSourceTrigger=LostFocus,Mode=TwoWay, ValidatesOnDataErrors=True}" IsReadOnly ="{Binding AllowEditing}" /> And here is the myusercontrol IsReadOnly property: public static DependencyProperty IsReadOnlyProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("IsReadOnly", typeof (bool), typeof ( myusercontrol)); public bool IsReadOnly { get { return ((bool) GetValue(IsReadOnlyProperty)); } set { MessageBox.Show(value.ToString()); SetValue(IsReadOnlyProperty, !value); OnPropertyChanged("IsReadOnly"); } } The message box is never displayed! Any ideas!

  • Iterate over a dict or list in Python

    - by Chris Dutrow
Just wrote some nasty code that iterates over a dict or a list in Python. I have a feeling this was not the best way to go about it. The problem is that in order to iterate over a dict, this is the convention: for key in dict_object: dict_object[key] = 1 But modifying the object properties by key does not work if the same thing is done on a list: # Throws an error because the value of key is the property value, not # the list index: for key in list_object: list_object[key] = 1 The way I solved this problem was to write this nasty code: if isinstance(obj, dict): for key in obj: do_loop_contents(obj, key) elif isinstance(obj, list): for i in xrange(0, len(obj)): do_loop_contents(obj, i) def do_loop_contents(obj, key): obj[key] = 1 Is there a better way to do this? Thanks!

  • How to properly downcast in C# with a SWIG generated interface?

    - by JG
I've got a very large and mature C++ code base that I'm trying to use SWIG on to generate a C# interface for. I cannot change the actual C++ code itself but we can use whatever SWIG offers in the way of extending/updating it. I'm facing an issue where a function C++ is written as such: A* SomeClass::next(A*) The caller might do something like: A* acurr = 0; while( (acurr = sc->next(acurr)) != 0 ){ if( acurr isoftype B ){ B* b = (B*)a; ...do some stuff with b.. } elseif( acurr isoftype C ) ... } Essentially, iterating through a container elements that depending on their true type, do something different. The SWIG generated C# layer for the "next" function unfortunately does the following: return new A(); So the calling code in C# land cannot determine if the returned object is actually a derived class or not, it actually appears to always be the base class (which does make sense). I've come across several solutions: Use the %extend SWIG keyword to add a method on an object and ultimately call dynamic_cast. The downside to this approach, as I see it, is that this requires you to know the inheritance hierarchy. In my case it is rather huge and I see this is as a maintenance issue. Use the %factory keyword to supply the method and the derived types and have SWIG automatically generate the dynamic_cast code. This appears to be a better solution that the first, however upon a deeper look it still requires you to hunt down all the methods and all the possible derived types it could return. Again, a huge maintenance issue. I wish I had a doc link for this but I can't find one. I found out about this functionality by looking through the example code that comes with SWIG. Create a C# method to create an instance of the derived object and transfer the cPtr to the new instance. While I consider this clumsy, it does work. See an example below. public static object castTo(object fromObj, Type toType) { object retval = null; BaseClass fromObj2 = fromObj as BaseClass; HandleRef hr = BaseClass.getCPtr(fromObj2); IntPtr cPtr = hr.Handle; object toObj = Activator.CreateInstance(toType, cPtr, false); // make sure it actually is what we think it is if (fromObj.GetType().IsInstanceOfType(toObj)) { return toObj; } return retval; } Are these really the options? And if I'm not willing to dig through all the existing functions and class derivations, then I'm left with #3? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Building 'flat' rather than 'tree' LINQ expressions

    - by Ian Gregory
I'm using some code (available here on MSDN) to dynamically build LINQ expressions containing multiple OR 'clauses'. The relevant code is var equals = values.Select(value => (Expression)Expression.Equal(valueSelector.Body, Expression.Constant(value, typeof(TValue)))); var body = equals.Aggregate<Expression>((accumulate, equal) => Expression.Or(accumulate, equal)); This generates a LINQ expression that looks something like this: (((((ID = 5) OR (ID = 4)) OR (ID = 3)) OR (ID = 2)) OR (ID = 1)) I'm hitting the recursion limit (100) when using this expression, so I'd like to generate an expression that looks like this: (ID = 5) OR (ID = 4) OR (ID = 3) OR (ID = 2) OR (ID = 1) How would I modify the expression building code to do this?

  • immediate=true is set on a jsf command button but still seeing validation

    - by Zack Macomber
I have the following command button set up in a facelet: <h:commandButton action="#{addressAction.deletePreviousAddress}" value="#{bundle['button.deleteAddress']}" styleClass="deg-form-button" immediate="true"> <f:setPropertyActionListener target="#{addressAction.addressActionForm.previousAddress}" value="#{address}"> </f:setPropertyActionListener> </h:commandButton> In AddressAction, the following code gets run to delete a previous address on the form: public Enum<NavigationConstants> deletePreviousAddress() { addressActionForm.getPreviousAddresses().remove(addressActionForm.getPreviousAddress()); return NavigationConstants.addresses; } Before I made the address input components "required=true", this code worked fine and removed the previous address from the jsf form successfully. Right now, I can't successfully delete a previous address because validation is occurring and stating that the input components need to be filled in on the previous address record on the form. How can I bypass this validation? I thought the "immediate=true" attribute on the command button would have accomplished it but that's not cutting it in my case...

  • Creating AST for shared and local variables

    - by Rizwan Abbasi
Here is my grammar grammar simulator; options { language = Java; output = AST; ASTLabelType=CommonTree; } //imaginary tokens tokens{ SHARED; LOCALS; BOOL; RANGE; ARRAY; } parse : declaration+ ; declaration :variables ; variables : locals ; locals : (bool | range | array) ; bool :ID 'in' '[' ID ',' ID ']' ('init' ID)? -> ^(BOOL ID ID ID ID?) ; range : ID 'in' '[' INT '..' INT ']' ('init' INT)? -> ^(RANGE ID INT INT INT?) ; array :ID 'in' 'array' 'of' '[' INT '..' INT ']' ('init' INT)? -> ^(ARRAY ID INT INT INT?) ; ID : (('a'..'z' | 'A'..'Z'|'_')('a'..'z' | 'A'..'Z'|'0'..'9'|'_'))* ; INT : ('0'..'9')+ ; WHITESPACE : ('\t' | ' ' | '\r' | '\n' | '\u000C')+ {$channel = HIDDEN;} ; INPUT flag in [down, up] init down pc in [0..7] init 0 CA in array of [0..5] init 0 AST It is having a small problem. Variables (bool, range or array) can be of two abstract types 1. locals (each object will have it's own variable) 2. shared (think of static in java, same for all object) Now the requirements are changed. I want the user to input like this NEW INPUT domains: upDown [up,down] possibleStates [0-7] booleans [true, false] locals: pc in possibleStates init 0 flag in upDown init down flag1 in upDown init down map in array of booleans init false shared: pcs in possibleStates init 0 flag in upDown init down flag1 in upDown init down maps in array of booleans init false Again, all the variables can be of two types (of any domain sepecified) 1. Local 2. Shared In Domains: upDown [up,down] possibleStates [0-7] upDown, up, down and possibleStates are of type ID (ID is defined in my above grammar), 0 and 7 are of type INT Can any body help me how to convert my current grammar to meet new specifications.

  • Linq to Entities, checking for specific foreign key id?

    - by AaronLS
I am trying to get rows where the foreign key ParentID == 0, and this is what I am trying but I get a NotSupportedException because it can't translate the ArrayIndex [0]: IQueryable<ApplicationSectionNode> topLevelNodeQuery = from n in uacEntitiesContext.ApplicationSectionNodeSet where (int)n.Parent.EntityKey.EntityKeyValues[0].Value == 0 orderby n.Sequence select n; So I need to pull that ArrayIndex out of the query so that the runtime can successfully translate the query. I'm not sure how to do that though. How does one query a specific object via it's primary key or set of objects via foreign key? Edit: Note that there is not actually a row in the table with NodeId == 0, the 0 is a magic value(not my idea) to indicate top level nodes. So I can't do n.Parent.NodeId == 0

  • Best language for scripting large scale file management

    - by Dan
The National Park Service's Natural Sounds Program collects multiple terabytes of data each year measuring soundscapes. In your opinion, what is best available scripting language to manage massive amounts of files and file types? We would like to easily design and run efficient user-friendly scripts to search for and retrieve/create copies of files that may be located in different directories according a single static hierarchy. The OS will most likely be windows. Thanks!

  • jQuery get Function Not Returning Data

    - by senfo
I'm trying to use the jQuery get function to render the results of an HTML page in a div on my page. The result of the get function appears to be successful because the value of textStatus (in the following code block) is "success". The value of data, however, is always empty. $(document).ready(function() { $.get('http://www.google.com', function(data, textStatus){ $('#RSSContent').html(textStatus + ' ' + data); }); }); Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Note: The final code will query an RSS feed, which I plan on transforming and rendering as HTML in the RSSContent div. I simply used http://www.google.com for testing purposes.

  • Javascript Global Variables Not Working as expected. Help?

    - by capri corn
I am new to Javascript. I am facing a problem with global variables. I can't figure out that why the global variables are not working as the code looks ok. Please Help me solve this problem. I will breifly explain the code first.I have some text on a page which changes to text field when clicked. When I define the variables inside the functions body the code starts working fine. When these variables are defined globally as in the following code, the console displays this error: the variable is not defined. Here my code: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <title>Span to Text Box - Demo - DOM</title> <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"> var textNode = document.getElementById('text'); var textValue = textNode.firstChild.nodeValue; var textboxNode = document.getElementById('textbox'); var doneButton = document.getElementById('done'); function change() { textboxNode.setAttribute('value', textValue); textNode.style.display = 'none'; textboxNode.setAttribute('type','text'); doneButton.setAttribute('type','button'); } function changeBack() { textNode.firstChild.nodeValue = textboxNode.value; textNode.style.display = 'block'; textboxNode.setAttribute('type', 'hidden'); doneButton.setAttribute('type','hidden'); } </script> </head> <body> <p id="text" onClick="change()">Click me!</p> <form onSubmit="return false;"> <input type="hidden" id="textbox" /> <input type="hidden" id="done" onClick="changeBack()" value="Done" /> </form> </body> </html> Please Help! • Is it possible to use array_shift() in PHP and get the key?

    - by alex
I have a list of files in an array where the filename is the key and the value is the last modified date in seconds. They are sorted from oldest to newest. The files are glob()'d in, and then sorted this way using asort($fileNameToLastModified, SORT_NUMERIC); I use array_shift() to get the oldest file. Unfortunately, it seems to be giving me the value, and there doesn't seem to be a way to get the key. Would the only way to do that be something like this? $keys = array_keys($fileNameToLastModified); $oldest = array_shift($keys); array_shift($fileNameToLastModified); // to manually chop the first array member off too. Or is there a built in? Thanks
