  Hi, I have the following configuration: CPU: amd athlon 64bit Motherboard: Phoenix with awardBIOS v6.0 APIC mode = disabled Video card: GeForce 5500 Sound card: soundblaster live 24bit RAM: 1.5GB Partitions: ext3 32GB where I installed Ubuntu. Swap 500MB. 180GB Fat32 unmounted. contains data only. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and used the "Additional driver" program to get the nVidia proprietary drivers. The system works for sometime and randomly freezes. The mouse and keyboard are not responding and I am not able to do a SSH. The only solution is pressing the power button. I tried Kubuntu 10.10 and 32/64-bits versions as well. There is nothing in the logs to suggest what the reason might be. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Installed Ubuntu In a low Specs PC and it is too slow, even with LXDE

  I'm new with Linux and started with Ubuntu 11.10, I installed it in my PC (Core2Duo 2Ghz, 512Mb Ram DDR2, integrated video in Motherboard), I know the requirements for Unity are 1Gb Ram so I decided to download a Desktop environment more lightweight, so I Installed LXDE, it loads very fast, compared to the 3.5 min from login screen to open desktop in Unity, but it freezes every time I open a single program, I can't even navigate in Internet, it freezes, sometimes for a pair of minutes and the graph at bottom right is all green as if iyt were using 100% CPU, it happens with every program. As additional data it takes 3+ min to get from boot system selection screen to Login screen and 3.5 Min more to get into Ubuntu with Unity, with LXDE it turns to 30 secs aproximately. Is Ubuntu + LXDE Desktop Environment Package = Lubuntu? or should I download Lubuntu directly instead? I installed some other desktop environments, as Gnome but it doesn't log in, the screen just turns grey. Should I get an older Ubuntu version? I'm thinking about uninstalling Ubuntu but I'll try to deplete the options, thanks for your support.

• Mouse cursor freezes randomly with Intel GMA 950

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 its installed using Wubi, dual boot with Windows. It's fresh install. Randomly mouse cursor freezes and cant click anything on the screen. I can move mouse but cant click. "It causes when select a text something" So I'm using keyboard to to reboot system. Then it back to normal after reboot. Tried with unplugging-plugging mouse don't work. PC: Asus laptop with Intel GMA 950 graphic card. A4 tech optical mouse. Ubuntu 10.10 completely updated and upgraded. How can I get around this?

• Keyboard freezes when xorg crashes.

  Situation is like that. Many times has happened that Xorg freezes and with it also keyboard. Quite some times because of some Compiz effects or Flash (fullscreen switch). Keyboard becomes totaly unresponsive, while mouse still works (I can move cursor, but can't click since desktop freezes) and music still plays and I can connect trough ssh. This is the only way I know I can try to solve problem - either by killing browser&flash or lastly restarting xorg server. This problem appears on more than one Ubuntu computer. My home dekstop with proprietery nvidia driver, on my work where I use noveau driever (opensource driver for geforce) and sometimes (but rarely) also on laptop with ATI graphics (using r300g driver which is really good!). Can someone explains why mouse still works while I can't input from keyboard? (I can't switch to virtual console or do R-E-I-S-U-B command) I have USB keyboard and USB mouse.

• Updated 11.10 - now trackpad and wifi won't work. How can these be fixed?

  I reinstalled 11.10 on my Asus EEE 1005HA, and my mousepad hasn't been working since. I've tried the workarounds mentioned in this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1867357 but, I get the message on the command line that says, "Synaptic isn't installed." When I go to the network settings to install Synaptic, I can't turn on wifi - no wireless options exist. How can I turn on wifi from the command line, on a new 11.10 install? Or, is there a way to turn on the trackpad and wifi from the install thumb drive? How can I move forward?

• What could be causing frequent display freezes?

  I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 two days ago (coming from Win8) and in the two days that I've been using it, my display has frozen four or five times. The mouse won't move but the keyboard does respond so I can use the Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc command to fix it. It seems like it might just be the display freezing because one of the times I was watching a Youtube video and the audio continued playing. I have an Nvidia graphics card with the most recent Nvidia drivers for it enabled. I see that a lot of questions about Ubuntu freezing get marked as a duplicate and pretty much always linked back to a thread about what to do when it freezes. Clearly, I've got that bit figured out already and I did read that thread for further advice. What I'm looking for though is how to fix this permanently. output from lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller [8086:0166] (rev 09) Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:2200] Kernel driver in use: i915 Update: JohnnyEnglish pointed out that Ubuntu is using the integrated graphics, not my Nvidia card. It turns out my laptop uses Nvidia Optimus and I cannot enable only the graphics card through the BIOS. I found out about Nvidia Prime and got it set up using this article. The settings panel which allows you to select the graphics says that 'performance mode' is enabled but when I check which graphics controller is enabled through the terminal, it still says it's using the integrated graphics. I'm not sure if this could be causing the freezes but I guess it's a starting point. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

• Ubuntu Hangs Suddenly (Dell Latitude E5530)

  I recently bought (a month ago) Dell Latitude E5530 which comes pre-installed with Ubuntu 11.10. I removed Ubuntu 11.10 and installed 12.04 LTS right after the purchase. Everything worked out of box but occasionally Ubuntu completely hangs. The screen freezes and I can't even switch to other terminals by pressing (CTRL+ALT+F*). Whenever the screen freezes, CPU fan speed also increases. This is not happening when running particular applications. I mean it can hang without giving any reason or error displayed and while running any application. In short currently I can't able to reproduce system hang myself. I also want to mention that sometimes it never hangs complete day.   The Problem: I'm running 10.04, and it suddenly started freezing after it boots. I can move the mouse, but I can't select anything. When the problem first started, there were only two things on the screen: 1. Gnome-Do 2. "Unlock Login Keyring" dialog box What I have done thus far: Asked myself if the keyboard was plugged in :-) Yes, it is. Tried to use ALT+F2 or CTRL+ALT+F1 per the "What Should I Do When Ubuntu Freezes" question. (Neither were responsive) Tried to reboot using the REISUB method (which did reboot, but I still had the same problem upon restart) Gnome-Do was in the autostart folder, and I removed it by deleting ~/.config/autostart/gnome-do.desktop Deleted my password keyring per this blog post Tried to kill and restart X with ALT+SysReq+K (Screen went black but X didn't restart) Tried to hit the Esc button What my screen is currently showing: My screen currently shows the "Choose password for new keyring" dialog box.

• Cursor freezes for 5 secs every now and then

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong? • Ubuntu 14.04 hangs at purple screen after it asks for my password

  I have installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS onto a Toshiba Tecra M5. The install appears to have been successful but when it says "install complete restart your computer" the computer does not restart. It just sits there, then after a forced shut down Ubuntu appears to start, icons appear in the top right hand corner of the screen but after it asks for my password it just hangs up on the purple screen. Can anyone help ?

It does low traffic static web serving + low trafic dynamic web serving (PHP, local MYSQL with small data, APC, MEMCACHE) + some background jobs like XML file processing.   I am using Ubuntu 12.04 for last one month without any problem. It was upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10. Recently I needed to replace my hard disk. After replacement I installed Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on the system. For some days it went ok, but now shutting down from Ubuntu is causing problems. It freezes on the text screen saying acpid=exiting checking for running unattended upgrades. After that I waited for a long time, but it didn't go off and I had to hit ctrl+alt+del to restart the system and booting from Windows and then shutting down from there. This happens every time I shut down my system from Ubuntu. I have seen many posts regarding the same kind of issues but none of the solutions reported there helped me out.

• How to diagnose Ubuntu CPU spikes / IO wait?

  I'm using Ubuntu and every couple minutes it goes unresponsive for a half second to a full second, which isn't normally a problem but makes trying to code extremely frustrating when your trying to hit backspace or navigate the code and nothing is happening. The problem is, the freezes are so brief that top doesn't have time to show me what is spiking the CPU (assuming something is, but I don't know what else could cause this). Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this performance issue? Edit: I've tried login in with Gnome Classic (No Effects) instead of Unity but it still freezes up every once in awhile. Edit: The CPU graph doesn't seem to be showing any actual spikes so it seems you were right and my original diagnosis of CPU spikes being the problem was incorrect, I now suspect IO wait. I don't recall this happening for the brief few weeks I had Windows 7 Starter running on it though, which leads me to believe it isn't (just?) the hardware.. is there anything I can tweak to improve this? • window title bar and controls (minimize, maximize and close) don't work sometimes

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10. Sometimes the window controls don't work. If I click on any of the icons on top-right or top-left they just become colorless and fade away, as though that are not present. The window has not frozen, as I can click inside the window and continue to work with it. The moment I click inside the window the titlebar controls regain their color, but when I click them again, they fade and bcm colorless. As a result, I cannot close, minimize or maximize. This is not a continuous problem, but happens very frequently.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Frequent Kernel Panics

  Dealing with what seems to be quantum behavior here. I'm having frequent Kernel panics and the problem is very hard to locate. To cut to the chase of what is going on I am essentially getting this screen: This occurs always after login (login screen is fine, can go into my TTY's and everything). But once I log in I have anywhere from 0 (instant) to 10 seconds before everything grinds to a halt and freezes. The only way I found out that it was a kernel panic was going into a TTY while it happens. At first, I figured something must be wrong with memory. Ran memtest86, full standard test. No errors. OK. CPU problem? Windows works fine, ran prime95 and a bunch of other torture tests for many hours. Drive problem? Nope. fsck reports no problems and the smart status is ok. Overclocking problem? Nope. Windows is working fine, and I also reset the bios to prove the point it was not the cause. At a loss here, even trying to reinstall the thing it gives me the same problem even attempting to install ubuntu (like right after you try to select "install ubuntu" or "try ubuntu first before installing"). Anyone have any thoughts? Its very bizarre, its as if my system hates linux and is trying to tell me not to use it (that would be a terrible reality). Thanks!

• Ubuntu always freezes on a friend's machine

  I am posting this on my friend's behalf. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my friend's computer but it continuously froze, no desktop effects worked, and it was frankly unusable. I thought this might be an issue with Unity and how it interacts with his hardware, so I tried several other desktop environments on his machine. These include KDE, Xfce, and GNOME. The problems persisted regardless of the desktop environment. I would like to note that he dual boots his system with Windows 7. Even there no desktop effects work but the system is reasonably stable. The following screenshots describe some of his system information (He is running Xfce at this time): 1: 2: Card information: intel corporation 82G33/G31 integrated graphics controller (rev02). What is the issue and how can it be solved? Please let me know if I should add any more information. Thank you.

  I recently upgraded my desktop mac to Precise and now can't get past the Ubuntu 12.04 splash page. • IRQ Conflicts Causing Video Card and Boot Problems?

  tl;dr - I have 4 devices sharing 1 IRQ. Is this bad and how do I tell the BIOS to stop it? Background: I have an old Dell GX280 dual Pentium 4 that I (semi) resurrected last weekend with an installation of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything was going fine the first several hours until a problem that plagued me when WinXP was on that machine happened -- it froze. Completely froze. None of the myriad of ways I have found here on askubuntu helped me to regain control except a long-press of the power button to shut it off. Clearly, this wasn't a software/WinXP issue. After much googling, I found that hardware conflicts can often cause this sort of total lock-up and with all the odd blocks of yellow and flecks of color showing on my screen (both WinXP and Ubuntu) I figured my old GeForce 7600 was failing and causing me these odd issues. (A good canned-air dusting of the entire interior fixed the color fleck problem) Again, through much googling and numerous answers found on askubuntu, I somehow stumbled my way onto the lshw command. After going through it, line by line, I found that I have four devices sharing IRQ 16: eth0, wlan0, ide0 (DVD-RW), and my video card. In hindsight, I can recall weird instances of my Ethernet connection to another computer not working when I thought it should. I never full troubleshot those issues so it could be a coincidence. The other thing that has been plaguing me since installing Ubuntu (wasn't there during WinXP) has been periodic moments of my monitor getting no signal from Ubuntu during boot. The first couple days, it would disappear after the Dell boot screen and reappear at Ubuntu login. Now, it disappears after the Dell boot screen and doesn't return at all -- I have to hit F12 where I can load a safe mode version of Ubuntu and get more details like dmesg and lsdev. I also ran memtest86 overnight and woke up to zero errors, so failing RAM is out. Where do I go from here?

• Ubuntu 11.10 momentarily freezes every couple minutes

  I'm working on an Acer Aspire One D257 running Ubuntu 11.10, and every few minutes the laptop freezes up for a second or two, before becoming responsive again. This doesn't really present a huge problem, but when I'm trying to code all of a sudden vim stops responding for a couple seconds while I'm trying to modify my code, it's increasingly frustrating. The odd part is, if I play a movie in VLC at the same time, when vim pauses the video keeps playing just fine (VLC's priority is not modified). I'm wondering if anyone knows why this may be happening, or in lieu of that, how I might be able to track down the source of my frustrating pauses. Normally I would try using top, but the pauses are shorter than 2 seconds so nothing unusual shows up in top as consuming the CPU. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot intermittent repeating 1 second long pauses in vim?

  Ubuntu 11.04 freezes completely after a little while when using a proxy. It's fine when it's got a direct Internet connection, but it completely grinds to a halt after about 10 or 15 minutes of traffic through a proxy. Any ideas? UPDATE: Here's some more information. I have a second-generation MacBook, which has both OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) installed on it. When running through a proxy, Snow Leopard works fine, but Ubuntu freezes frequently. Any suggestions at all? Or, rather, what other kinds of information do you need?

• Dual booted Windows 7 freezes after login screen

  First-time Linux user, using a Packard Bell Easy Note TS laptop. My problem arose after I dual boot installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 via WUBI. I backed up all my data, and reinstalled Windows from factory settings on the recovery partition. When I first tried to install Ubuntu I mistakenly closed the lid at the start of the installation, stopping it. After that I rebooted, and my second installation attempt went without a hitch. Ubuntu works perfectly, the data on the partitions seem to be fine. My problem is I can't log back in to Windows 7. After selecting it in GRUB, and then in the Windows 7/ WUBI choice on boot, it loads up perfectly til the user log in screen. After the password is inputted, it stalls on the "Welcome" busy screen. This happens in Safe mode as well. Startup repair can't find a problem and neither can CHKDSK. System restore and Last known good config have no effect either. If anyone could help me out, I'd be real grateful. edit in response to the question below, since I don't know how to comment: Windows was installed first and its partitions are the first on the list. Should I move the windows partitions to after the Linux ones on the disk? Thanks for your help.
