• Are there well-known examples of web products that were killed by slow service?

I can pretty easily think of example problems with scale (Twitter's fail whale) or reliability (Netflix and Pinterest outages caused by a single datacenter in a storm). But can (lack of) speed really kill?

• Where's the source code?

  I've been contacted by several people through this blog asking about the missing source code for the "Beginning Windows 8 Application Development - XAML Edition" book (the book is available at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1430245662/http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1430245662/) and wanted to share this with others who may have come to this blog looking for it but may not have communicated with me.  The publisher (Apress) does know that the source code is not posted on the book's product page and will be correcting it.  Apress is located in New York City and things were slowed down a little bit last week due to the storm, but I've been assured they will be correcting the product page as soon as they can.  Thanks to everyone who has bought the book and I especially appreciate your patience.

• How to speed up rsync/tar of large Maildir

  I have a very large Maildir I am copying to a new machine ( over 100 BaseT ) with rsync. The progress is slow. VERY SLOW. Like 1 MB/s slow. I think this is because it is a lot of small files that are being read in an order that essentially is random with respect to where the blocks are stored on disk, causing a massive seek storm. I get similar results when trying to tar the directory. Is there a way to get rsync/tar to read in disk block order, or otherwise overcome this problem?

• Legally, can I re reuse code for different customers?

  The company I work for develops custom factory automation applications for multiple customers. Even though each application is custom, they contain common code which is re-used across projects. One of the customers is now looking for the source code to their application, which has caused a major storm in the company. Management have decided that we can't give them the source to the shared components as they are used by other customers. I've been asked to modify the shared components 'enough' so as they aren't common. So my questions are: 1) Legally, should there be any problem with re-using common components for different customer? 2) If I really need to modify the common components, then how much is 'enough' ? (I know this sucks, but I either do this or hand in my notice). Oh yeah, and my company has no license in place with any of these customers.

• How can I stop my laptop display from flickering when I connect my TV?

  I have a laptop with an HDMI output port running Vista, and an HDTV with HDMI input ports. The laptop is set to extend its desktop onto a second monitor. When I connect the computer to the TV with an HDMI cable, my laptop screen usually flickers rapidly. Most of the time it lasts for about 30 seconds, but sometimes it lasts for several minutes and once in a while it doesn't happen at all. It wouldn't be so bad except that the cursor moves back to the center of the laptop screen with each flicker, so I can't really do anything until the machine decides it's ready to calm down. I haven't been able to find any pattern at all for the causes or duration of the flickering. It doesn't seem to matter what programs the laptop is running when I connect it to the TV, whether I enable the extended display before or after I connect the TV or which HDMI port/cable I use. What could be causing this, and how can I make it go away?

• Hot video card in server

  Not sure if this belongs here or Superuser (I looked at Superuser -- suspect there are more hardware gurus here). I have a server that sits in a cabinet. It's connected to a small screen that is normally off. However, the video card is running at about 210 F all the time. The rest of the PC is pretty cool (getting temps from SpeedFan). Any thoughts on a way to quiet/calm/cool the video card since it's never really doing anything anyway? I'm usually logged out on the server, and no screen saver defined. Windows is already set to turn off the screen for power saving at 5 minutes.

• How to migrate an SQLServer 2000 database from one machine to another

  This January I'm migrating our main SQLServer 2000 based database to a beefier server. Is there any standard procedure or documentation on how to do it? I need to replicate all at the new server (databases, jobs, DTSs, vinculated servers, etc). Edit: I mean SQLServer 2000 on both ends! Edit: Be calm, people, I just crossed the versions from another software I posted about at the same time as this. Effectively, I even checked the wikipedia to be sure version 8 was 2000. Don't need to flame that much about what is just an errata.

• SSH logins failing before success

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 Server, updated, to run a webserver on Tomcat 7. I have about 1000 clients that are very very often using an RSYNC program to sync some file with this server. Those RSync are using SSH with a certain user to open connections on the server. The result is that my server is, as normal, full of connections by the same user. About 5 connections per 1 second every day any time. Then, when I try to open a regular SSH connection with my Putty client, the connection fails before login saying "Server unexpectedly closed network connection", about 6 times for 10 attemps, anbd for 4 attemps out of 10, it works normally and I am able to login as any user. Is there a overload of connections here? The server statistics are very calm saying less then 40% of network usage and less of 2% CPU. How can I improve this? Thank you for any help. V.

At DIY site Curbly Chris Job shares a simple alarm clock hack. For years he had an alarm clock with a nice dim display. When it broke he went in search of a replacement but failed to find one that wasn’t . His solution came in form of a sliced up binder divider (the clear, usually tinted, plastic tabs you put in between paper in a binder). He sliced to fit the display, spritzed it with a little water to help it cling to the plastic, and pressed it in place. • How to explain my 5 burnt-out years off to a new employer?

  Five years ago, I lost my ability to concentrate long-term, and therefore ability to code with professional efficiency. I know why it happened, I understood how it happened, and on top of being able to re-create my calm and thus relaxed focus, I overcame the original (rooted in childhood) reason why my mind tilted on the overall situation back then; My understanding isn't rooted in words that a psychologist told me, I actually grokked them first-hand. I'm pretty much confident to be able to churn out productivity, possibly even more so than pre-burnout. I also never lost my interest in code nor did I stray from trying to get my abilities back; I kept my knowledge up to date (I could always relatively painlessly learn things coding-related, just not apply them) and thus can say that I'm a better developer than before, even if my average LOC-count over those years is abysmally low. On the other hand, now I have a biography that includes more time on the dole than in a job. What would convince you, as an employer, to give my application a chance? I don't believe I should just keep the whole topic out of it.

• Malaysian Airlines bans kids under 12, creates separate cabins in basement of flight

  Kids are lot of fun to watch and play as long as they don’t start crying. Once they start crying it’s tough job for parents to calm them down and for people around it’s painful to be part of it. If it happens to be on a flight, it’s a biggest annoyance one can ever experience. Especially on long journey over night flights, it’s a nightmare for passengers if couple of kids are uncontrollable. After receiving many complaints from its passengers who are disturbed by kids in flight, Malaysian Airlines decided to ban kids under 12 in their regular Economy class cabins of new Airbus A380s. Parents with under 12 years old kids are allowed only in to special kids zone created in the basement of  the multi-storied jumbo flights Airbus A380s. May be parents with under 12 kids does not appreciate this move, but the rest of travellers would be happy. Back in June 2011 Malaysian Airlines banned infants in first class of its Boeing 747-400 jets. The CEO of Malaysian Airlines defended on twitter about the decision as first classers spend pricy amount for a comfortable journey.  So if you are a parent of kids  under 12, think twice before you book tickets on Malaysian Airlines. • I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

  Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application. • So - vuvuzelas. any programming equivalents ?? [closed]

  Hi All, I'm sure we've all been exposed over the past few days to the delights of the vuvuzela (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8738604.stm). In an attempt to mask the waspish 'parp' from our living rooms, tv sound engineers are devising all sorts of filters to try and 'calm' the abhoration :). some tho say that it simply 'adds to the ambience' and that masking it out would be a denial of its 'additive' character. Now, on a programming related front, have you had to mask any extraneous 'noise' in a piece of work that you've picked up from someone else (or perhaps even your own!!)?? If so how 'inspired' was your remedy and how did you creatively 'reverse' it out once the noise had subsided and/or the pitch changed. :) tongue firmly in cheek... jim

• How can programmers get the quiet working environment they need? [closed]

  We have an open plan office with all our programmers, web designers and client service team. Problem is my programmer team has to put up with dance music and wailing guitars all day due to the fact that designers and client services team think this makes the office a better environment. When I turn it off (by blocking the streaming of music on the router, he-he-he) they complain that its so quiet and dull. How do I explain to them that programmers need a calm quiet environment without coming across like a really annoying geek? Any other thoughts or ideas appreciated.

• Dlink DIR-615 suddenly stops working - Orange internet light

  I unplugged my Dlink DIR-615 router last night from the wall due to a storm rolling in. I've done this countless times, no problem. However, when I went to plug it in and use the internet today, nothing. Check everything, cycled everything. Hard reset the router, nothing. The little globe on the front is red/orange, and it should be green. Windows gives me an error of a "DNS Issue", and the internet works when connected directly to the modem. How can I fix this issue? Why would it suddenly stop working?

• PC case and PSU screw question....

  Hi, I have maybe a funny one to ask.... To this Christmass I bought new PC. When I started to asseble it, I found that my case (Artic Cooling Silentium T11) has 12 screws for HDD, DVD etc, and 6 screws for the expansion cards. Well, first thing that surprised me was, why only 6 screws for expansion card, when case has actually 7 slots. And second, what are PSU screws supposed to some with? The PSU, Case or nothing? Becouse neighter PSU or Case had them. PSU is Evolve Storm 600W. Well, I know case and PSU are not some high end devices, but still, would it hurt them to add 1 screw for expansion cards and 4 for PSU? So, my question is, is this situation normall, or which one (Case or PSU) does normally screws come with? Thanks.

• Why do my download speeds drastically vary during a download?

  I watch the download speed rise and fall like waves in a storm. At night, during low bandwidth usage I have achieve speeds as high as 3.23 M/sec but the watch them decline to 250 K/sec. and then climb back up. Over and over. During the day my best is around 1.67 M/sec with lows into the 65 K/sec. On top of this, why does a download need to slow down when approaching the end of the download? It's not like a multi-hundred ton train needing to decrease speed as it approaches the station.

• How to prevent partial crash during VLAN configuration on a HP ProCurve 3500

  as you can see from my question, I have a VLAN configuration problem with a ProCurve3500. The goal is to remove a VLAN from the existing configuration, however when I use the WEB UI to do this, I cannot modify ports to be assigned to a different VLAN or the Default VLAN. I always get the message "config failed", which is not very helpful. When I try to do it over telnet, the router somehow partially crashes and somehow the utilization on all ports is at 100% and I can barely use the web ui. After a reboot everything is fine again, but the configuration was not changed... The traffic after this partial crash looks like a broadcast storm, however there are definitely no loops in the segment. I also updated to the latest stable firmware, but the problem persists. • Laptops trying to connect via wireless? Only able to connect only via wired connection

  It seems that all the wireless laptops in the office have disconnected and are unable to reconnect to the wifi after a terrible storm caused some power interruptions. Troubleshooting actions Verify wireless broadcasting is up With each laptop i ended up flushing their dns cache on Win 7 (ipconfig /flush ) Performed an ipconfig /all to see what the new ip is Made sure password was correct Reset the router (multiple times) restarted each laptop. Tried connecting wirelessly Am i missing some small detail ? Network information The router is a linksys/cisco WRVS4400N router. Supports a lot of fancy features i don't know how to use. We have 3 static ip's the conference room computer, the wireless printer, my computer Mostly windows machines, we have 3 mac users

• Blackberry Won't Sync: Says Processing

  I have a blackberry storm 2 and I have it set up to sync, just like I've done with all the other ones in the company. They pull the address book/contacts from outlook, and aren't synced to an exchange server. I have everything setup and then when I hit synchronize it flashes "processing" the phone shows it trying to sync and then it is done in less than a second. It did warn me that the computer was not supplying enough power to charge the device and it said that I should make sure the drivers are correct. Also, I was warned that the device might not function properly down in the bottom right hand corner. Any ideas? I've uninstalled and reinstalled the blackberry software off the disc.
