  • ATI Eyefinity under linux

    I know that the new 5xxx series cards from ATI are capable of powering up to 6 monitors, but I was curious if anyone had any such luck setting this up under linux. I actually only have three monitors that I am interested in using, but three is the point where the previous generation video cards started to get a little buggy as a result of needing multiple video cards. Is the linux support for this capability any good at this point, or is the Eyefinity support really only for windows at this time.

  • How to only allow particular programs to modify certain files?

    I want to make certain directories on my drives read-only except to particular programs who will have full permissions. For example, the Microsoft Word might be allowed to modify the files in my Documents folder, but other programs (such as the Command Prompt) would not be allowed to. I'm guessing this requires a file system filter driver of some sort, but I don't know which programs have this capability. Is there any (free) program that can do this for me?

  • Eyefinity resolution on third monitor

    I'm now using three monitors with resolution capability of 1920x1080. The one monitor connected to Active Display Port is (from some reason) limited to 1440x900. Is there a way to increase the resolution of the third monitor to have all three at 1920X1080? My machine: Graphics card - AMD 5770 Processor - Intel Core i7-2600 Ram - 8GB OS - Windows 7 64bit.   • Looking for speech-to-text tool (convert .wav to text)

    I have the ability to get .wav files of voice mails emailed to me, but sometimes I'll be sitting in a meeting and I need to know the content of a message without playing it out loud. Are there any good (and, preferably, free) tools for converting .wav files to text? I know Google Voice has this capability, but I can't determine if it'll work on a file-by-file basis. I realize that this is a difficult research problem, but even an 80% solution might be workable.

  • View/Find all compressed files on the server?

    I need to find all compressed files/folders regardless of file format on a Windows Server 2003 machine. Search options do not provide this capability. Is there a way to list/view all compressed files? Perhaps, this can be done by PowerShell using file/folder attributes and put into a txt file with file location. UPD: Under compressed files/folders - I mean files which appear in blue color in Explorer after changing file/folder attribute.

  • Tor and blacklisting

    I'm studying Tor and its capability to provide anonymity and bypass censorship, especially when used by people of repressive countries. I'm wondering about one thing. The nodes that are part of the "Onion Network" are limited and they're public. So, in an oppressive regime, couldn't be possible that someone with a blacklist just put a firewall blocking in this way TOR traffic? (and tracking down who's using it?)

  • How stable is zfs-fuse 0.6.9 on Linux?

    I'm thinking of using ZFS for my home-made NAS array. I would have 4 HDDs in raidz on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 machine. I'd like to use the snapshot capability and dedup when storing data. I'm not so much concerned about the speed, since the machine is accessed via N wireless network and that is probably going to be the bottleneck. So does anyone have any practical experience with zfs-fuse 0.6.9 on such (or simillar) configuration?

  • Setting up a home server - what to use? (ZFS vs btrfs, BSD vs Linux, misc other requirements)

    I need to get all our home content off individual machines and onto a central server. What I'd like to have is the metaphorical "server under the stairs". Stuff we need: expandable storage. I want to be able to add extra disc as we go along, with minimal maintenance required. Currently we've got about 3Tb of files we need to host, and that's likely to grow by another Tb every 6-12 months based on recent history. I need to be able to add additional disc with minimal pain needs to store all the media (i.e. photos, video, music) we have, and run services to serve the various devices we have in the house to playback (e.g. DAAP so we can play stuff through iTunes, ccxstream so we can play stuff over XBMC). DAAP and ccxstream are needed now, but we also need to support new standards as they emerge (so a closed-box solution isn't going to work) RAID 5, or something broadly equivalent (e.g. RAID-Z) BitTorrent client ssh, NFS, Samba access snapshot capability (as in ZFS), so we can snapshot individual file systems regularly and rollback when my kids delete their school assignments the day before they're due... ability to recover quickly from power outages (it's not unusual for us to have power outages that last longer than our UPS' batteries) FOSS software a modern distributed version control system running on the box, such as Mercurial Stuff I'd like to have on the server, but can live without: PVR capability, so I could record TV to the box Web server. We currently run a small Web server on a very old box, and I'd ideally like to turn the old box off and move the content to the new server just to save some electricity Nagios + mrtg I've been looking at using a EEE Box as the server, primarily because I can get them cheap and they don't consume much power. The choice of OS and file system is more difficult, from what I've found: I've got most experience with various Linux distros, but am happy to use another Unix FreeBSD and OpenSolaris seem to be the best choices for hosting ZFS OpenSolaris' hardware support is nowhere near as good as e.g. Ubuntu btrfs, while looking very good, doesn't seem ready for prime-time yet ZFS doesn't let you (easily?) add new discs to a RAID5 or RAID-Z reading around, it seems that ZFS is a bit short of tools for recovering lost data At the moment, I'm leaning towards running FreeNAS+ZFS, but I'm concerned about the requirement to be able to add new disc on a fairly regular basis to an existing RAID-Z.   • Can you zip a file from command prompt?

    I have a batch file that outputs a text file. I thought it would be nice if I could zip it up too. This will be used in an uncontrolled environment so I can't make assumptions about the presence of 3rd party software products such as 7-Zip etc. This needs to use Window's now-built-in capability to zip files.

  • Scanning for new disks attached using virtio?

    I can successfully attach disks to a running KVM instance using virsh attach-disk... virsh attach-disk node-1 /dev/vg_lunsr/lun1 vdb Disk attached successfully ...but these new devices aren't seen by the guest without a reboot, which almost defeats the purpose of dynamic attachment. If these were SCSI devices I would use e.g. /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan to request the SCSI drivers to scan for new devices. Is there an equivalent capability for the virtio block driver?

  • How to mount a HFS partition in Ubuntu as Read/Write?

    I plugged in my external harddrive (which was formatted on my Mac into HFS+ journaled) to my Ubuntu desktop 9.04 64bit. I am not able to get the drive to mount with write capability, how do I do that? Right now all I'm getting is read access, I tried sudo mount -t hfsplus /dev/sdf2 /media/"Portable HD" but that still gave me only read access... ideas??

  • Can ZenOSS integrate Ganglia smoothly?

    I like Ganglia for its Gmetric function, and I like its multi-layer capability. But Ganglia does not have healthiness check, alerting and etc. for the server monitor functionality. So it would be great to bring this two species together. Sure, we can install Ganglia, and then install ZenOSS. But is there a plugin or something that can smoothly integrate them together? At least integration at the presentation level. Thanks

  • Can Office365 (Enterprise) sync from a remote LDAP server?

    I am looking in to the details of a migration to Office365 - primarily for the use of hosted Outlook capability. I see that the Enterprise plans have "Active Directory Sync", but details seem scarce. Is it possible to sync an independent LDAP server (such as Apache Directory) up to O365 (I want to keep it separate), or would I need to host a local instance of Active Directory and use that to sync users up to O365?

    I lost ability to see WiFi networks on my laptop. I already tryied: reinstall wifi driver reboot disable/enable from windows and from bios check for latest driver both by Windows and Fukitsu driver update When i Use windows Network Diagnostic, I am getting recomendation "Turn on Wireless capability". There is no switch or keyboard combination for this laptop model (or I do not know any one). Any ideas?

    I've dedicated box that hosts wordpress blog with huge traffic. I need mail functionality for me and 2 other employees. I also need mail send capability for fail2ban and logwatch applications. I don't want to stress this box too much, so I wonder: How scure can postfix be? Will I stress server beyond needed with antivirus and mail filters? and postfix? Server is with 2gb ram, e5600 nothing fancy a simple pc.
