• VPN networking issue

  I have 2 servers hosted in the cloud. One an application server, one a VPN server, both running Win2008. Both have a local IP address assigned by DHCP in different network subnets, 10.227.55.0 (VPN) and 10.231.5.0 (App Server). These servers can ping each other. My VPN client connects in to the VPN server (using a L2TP connection on a Win7 client). It is assigned an IP Address from the VPN server's static pool (the VPN server takes 192.168.100.1, the client is given 192.168.100.2). The client can ping both the 192.168.100.1 address of the VPN server, and its 'local' IP address (10.227.55.X). What the client can't do is ping the App Server. How can I configure routing so that my client can access the App Server, without hard-coding any of the DHCP IP addresses anywhere? thanks Duncan

I need 3-5 developers to be able to work on database on the server, and was intending to accomplish this by setting up SSTP/RRAS on the server and letting them VPN in. This has been a bit of an ordeal due to the amount of server roles and messing with certificates that has been needed, but my VPN connection works now (all clients will be Windows 7). My problem is that when I drop my VPN connection (from the client side) the server hangs. The only way that I've found to get it back is to reboot it from the Amazon management console. • diagnosing random power down crashes on a hackintosh [closed]

  I have a hackintosh running on a Gigabyte P55M UD2. It has run without a single issue as a hackintosh for about 9 months, and the machine is about 2.75 years old. Never had issues when it was just linux box. Power supply is 750 Watts. It recently started spontaneously rebooting, no seeming connected to any particular use case or ram/cpu load. There is no hanging or anything, just suddenly acts like the power went out. The frequency of which seems to be increasing. I've tried using just one of each of the two ram sticks, and it happens with either one in. I'm not sure what to try next, is there some way of determinging whether it's a mobo, cpu, or powersupply issue short of replacing them all? thanks! Iain

  I have a desktop system installed with a 250 GB hdd (seagate sata II) this system is having a power supply of 500W (not sure if it is 650W but not more than that) the power supply is a local brand. Will it be safe to attach a second 250 GB sata II hdd on the same system. Safe in the sense that the system may not fall short of power at any time. My system's config is as follows Core2Duo processor Mercury cabinet having an additional fan (small one) sata dvd writer 52X windows xp sp 2 ASUS motherboard (intel G965 express chipset) If the above specified power supply is not sufficient for above configuration of system then please suggest the appropriate power supply (including watts)

• How to turn off power metering in HP ILO2?

  I have an issue with all of my RHEL 5.3 servers, where HP iLo2 power meter checks the power draw of the power supply on the server. However this gets passed to the /var/log/messages in our host, and eventually fills up the logs. Anyone have any idea how to completely disable power meter option in iLo? I checked google and iLo2 documentation provided from HP, but found nothing that tells you how to disable it / turn it off. Maybe some CLI command? Im not sure. • Why does MOVE command in DOS treat wildcard patterns oddly in this case?

  I am using the "move" command with a wildcard pattern in the CMD prompt under Windows 7. In my source directory, I have the following files: movie1.avi movie1.avi_metadata movie2.avi movie2.avi_metadata If I type the command move source\*.avi dest it will move all four files even though I would expect it to only move the two *.avi files and not the *.avi_metadata files. As expected, move source\*.a dest and move source\*.av dest don't move any files. However when the length of the extension for the wildcard pattern is 3 characters, it will move all extensions that begin with those first three characters. Is this a bug in the "move" command or expected behavior and is it documented anywhere? Edit: John Watts notes that this is probably do to "short" filenames. Is it possible then to make commands in the CMD interpreter only operate on long filenames and to ignore short filenames?

• Battery is drained too quickly

  I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time. Could this be the problem? This is a report from powertop. • How do I turn off PCI devices?

  With the purchase of an Intel SSD and 85WHr Li-ion battery and the linking of wifi and bluetooth to my laptop's wireless switch, extensive Intel PowerTop usage, switching from compiz to metacity, stopping of the desktop-couch daemon, removal of Ubuntu One and several other services from my startup, disabling of everything possible in my BIOS, and physical removal of my optical drive, I've gotten my battery life up fairly high, but I think there's still more to be done. Specifically, when I'm in class taking notes, I want to temporarily but completely power down: Ethernet Firewire USB ports SD card reader Optical drive Webcam Sound card PCMCIA slot ..without turning them off in my BIOS like they are now, if possible, because then I have to restart my computer to use any of them. As it stands, I still haven't managed to power down: Firewire USB connection to webcam sound card How do I tell Linux to disable and power down these devices? Is it true that any PCI slot can be physically powered down? My current idle power consumption is 7.9 watts plus the screen. (10.0W at min. brightness) Also, how do I set the screen timeout to ten seconds? gconf editor isn't honoring it when I set it to that. Will switching from nVidia to Nouveau save any significant amount of power?

• nHibernate session - Using repository pattern in Web, windows, wcf etc...

  I recently posted a question which was answered by Bryan Watts, regarding generic repository for nHibernate. I'm trying to design my data access to allow various facets - from ASP.net, WCF and Windows Forms / Windows services. I'm a bit confused re: session management etc.. How would I handle this? I've been checking out code such as: http://membranecms.googlecode.com/svn/ and questions such as: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1207833/nhibernate-linq-session-management But what do i do if i don't just do things in a web based environment..? Do i need to create different repositories for each client? Or do i pass in the ISession into the (for example) UserRepository constructor..? ... as a side note I'm using nHibernate.Linq Also using fluent nHibernate to config my mapping

• Sun Ray 3 Plus Appliance Announced

  There were many of you out there wondering if Oracle was going to keep and add to the Sun Ray and Sun virtualized desktop product suite, there have been a number of affirmative statements over the last many months. However, none of them resound like this; the introduction of a new product pretty much proves the point. A couple minutes before 3:00, local time yesterday, Oracle announced the release of a new Sun Ray, appliance, the Sun Ray 3 Plus. This is the unit that will replace the SR 2 FS (which has been for sale now since the middle of last decade).  Physically it is about the same size as the 2 FS but there are some significant differences... As you can see there is no smart card reader in the front - that has moved to the top to ensure only one hand is required to insert the card.  There is also a larger surround on the card reader that lights up to show the user the card is being read (properly).  A new power on/off switch is on the front which essentially brings power consumption to ~0 watts, but there is also a new 'sleep' timer looking for 30 minutes of inactivity and then will drop the power consumption down to ~ 1watt. There are also 2 USB 2.0 ports are accessible on the front instead of one.  The standard mic in and headphone out ports are there as well.  There is even more interesting stuff on the back. From the top down there are two more USB 2.0 ports for a total of four, but then the Oracle "Peripheral Kit" keyboard includes a 3-port USB Hub, too.  There's a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port as well as a 1000 Mb SFP port.  Standard DB-9 Serial port and then two DVI ports.  Then there is the really big news.  Two DVI ports driving 2560 x 1600 resolution, each. Most PCs can't do that without adding an adapter card.Now the images I have here are ones taken on a prototype a couple months back.  They are essentially the same as the Production unit, but if you would like to see an image of the Production Sun Ray 3 Plus unit you can see one here. There is a full data sheet available here. So this is the first Oracle Sun Ray desktop appliance.  Proof that the product line lives on.  A very good start!

• Leveraging Social Networks for Retail

  For retailers, social media is all about B2C2C. That is, Business to Consumer to Consumer, or more specifically, retailer to influencer to consumer. Traditional marketing targeted mass media, trying to expose the message to as many people as possible. While effective, this approach has never been very efficient, with high costs for relatively low penetration. Then it was thought that marketers should focus their efforts on a relative few super-influencers that would then sway the masses. History shows a few successes with this approach but lacked any consistency or predictability. After all, if super-influencers were easy to find, most campaigns would easily go viral. Alas, research shows that most wide-spread trends were the result of several fortunate events, including some luck. So do people exert influence over each other when it comes to purchase decisions? Of course they do, all the time. But that influence is usually limited to a small set of friends and specific specialization. For instance, although I have 165 friends on Facebook, I am only able to influence my close friends and family on PC purchases, and I have no sway at all for fashion purchases. People trust my knowledge on technology, but nobody asks my advice on shoes. How then should retailers leverage social networks in order to reinforce brand image and push promotions? Two obvious ways are Like and Share. Online advertisements or wall-postings receive more clicks when the viewer sees that friends have "liked" the posting. That's our modern-day version of word-of-mouth advertising. Statistics show that endorsements from friends make it more likely a person will engage. If my friends and I liked it, then I might also "share" (or "retweet" in the case of Twitter) it with other friends. In that case the retailer has paid for X showings of the advertisement, but sharing has pushed it to an additional Y people at no cost. And further, the implicit endorsement by the sharer makes it more likely the recipient will engage. So a good first step is to find people active in social networks that will Like and Share in order to exert influence. Its still tough to go viral, but doubling engagement is still a big step in the right direction. More complex social graph analysis would be a second step, but I'll leave that topic for another day. • I owe you an explanation

  Welcome to my blog! I am Frédéric Desbiens, a new member of the ADF Product Management team.  I joined Oracle only a few weeks ago. My boss is Grant Ronald, and I have the privilege to work in the same team as Susan Duncan, Frank Nimphius, Lynn Munsinger and Chris Muir. I share with them a passion for all things Java and ADF. With this blog, I hope to help you be more successful with our products – whether you are a customer or a partner. You may have heard of me before. Maybe you have my book in your bookshelf; or maybe we met at a conference. I went to JavaOne, ODTUG Kaleidoscope and Oracle OpenWorld in the past, when I worked for a major consulting firm. I will spare you all the details of my career; you can have a look at my LinkedIn profile if you are curious about my past.  Usually, my posts will be of a technical nature, and will focus on Oracle ADF and Oracle JDeveloper. SOA and portals have always been two topics of interest for me, however, and I will write about them. Over time, you will probably get acquainted with my « strategic » side as well. I devour history books, and always had a tendency to look at the big picture. I will probably not resist to the temptation of mixing IT and history, but this will be occasional, I promise!  At this point, I owe you an explanation about the title of the blog. I am French-Canadian, and wanted to evoke my roots in an obvious yet unobtrusive way. I was born in Chicoutimi, which is one of the main cities found in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Traditionally, a large part of the wild blueberry production of the province of Québec come from there. A common nickname for the inhabitants is thus Les Bleuets, « The Blueberries » in English. • Dell Management Packs in System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2?

  Hey all, I recently set up SCOM in a small business network environment. The root management server is a Dell Poweredge 2950, and I'd like to use SCOM to monitor it using Dell's management packs. I've imported the management packs into the SCOM deployment and followed Dell's installation instructions, but it doesn't seem to be fully working yet. Currently, the Diagram views in the Dell tree (Monitoring tab) seem to show me the server's place in the network topology, so it seems that at least part of it is working. However, none of the reports under "Performance and Power Monitoring Views" provide any information. When clicking on one of them (Power Consumption (Watts), for instance), the display area is blank and there is a tooltip visible that reads "No performance counter is selected. To select a counter, place a check mark in the Show column in legend below." However, in the legend, there's nothing there for me to check. I've installed OpenManage 6.2 on the server as per the Dell documentation, but I don't know what else I could have done that I missed. Does this sound like a familiar problem to anyone?

• COMPAQ Tower No Signal to monitor

  Hi there, I have had some troubles with this: I received a compaq tower: Compaq Presario SR1224NX Onboard VGA Windows XP SP2 from a friend. It was given to me on condition i give her the files back. My plan was to turn this into an Ubuntu Server. It booted up no problems even with the ubuntu live disc. After a normal shutdown(not unpluggin the power cord and not doing a hard shutdown with the power button), it would not restart even after SEVERAL attempts. I realized the light next to the power supply would flash very rapidly. I researched and found out it was one of two things: a dead power supply or the cables to the motherboard and to the disks etc. Thus i checked to ensure the cables were fine(and they were). I purchased a Power Supply (this one has 400 watts, the initial had 250) and installed it. The tower now boots. It booted into the live disk and everything. After a normal shutdown, it now restarts but is not sending signal to my monitor. I have tried several monitors in which i assure work perfectly but not with this tower(i recall it did show display after replacing the power supply). The monitors are ACER. This is different than most "no Signal" problems since i am not using an external Video Card, this is onboard VGA. Thanks!

• Macbook Battery Charging Troubles

  Problem: Occasionally, my macbook's battery will say it's charging and actually won't be. It stays at 0% for a long time. Other info: I thought it was my battery (laptop was 3 years old). Got a new battery. Issue did not go away. Got a new power supply. Did not go away. Ended up getting a unibody macbook pro. :) (We even ended up moving to a new house). Now still having the issue. The only thing I can think of is my power strip, which is the only thing that has stayed constant. Is it possible for the strip to be affecting the amount of watts my macbook(s) are getting and preventing it from properly charing the battery. I think it goes in and out, the battery picks up the slack and once it's empty the computer shuts down b/c there's no power at all for a second or two. Funny thing is I have a desktop PC on this same strip and it has never had issues with power. Thanks! :)

• Cannot access server shares over VPN

  I've set up a single hosted server to use as a development environment for a web-based application. The web app is served up fine on port 80, however I'm struggling to get my VPN to behave how I'd expect so the developers don't have the access they require. The VPN connects fine and I can access the back-end database (SQL Server) which resides on the server with the client tools from the laptops. However they cannot access any shared folders. The server's local IP address is 10.x.x.x, and I've assigned a static IP address pool to RRAS (of 192.168.100.1 - 20). The clients pick up a valid IP Address (i.e. 192.168.100.9) when they connect. There is no name resolution setup, DNS or WINS. When connected via VPN the clients can ping the server (192.168.100.1) by IP Address, but cannot map a drive to a shared folder (net use * \\192.168.100.1\xxxxx) - I get 'System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found.' I don't understand why I can ping by the ip, but not map by it. Some details: Server OS is Windows 2008 (Datacenter) VPN is SSTP using RRAS Clients are all Windows 7 I've tried temporarily disabling the firewalls So, why can we not access the file system when everything else (ping, RDP, SQL Server clients tools) works?
