    I'd like to include cookie data in an nginx access log like so: (simplified example) log_format foo '$remote_addr "$request" $cookie_bar'; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log foo; This works great on requests that already have a cookie "bar", but for the first request to my server nginx will report "-" as the value of "bar". It seems like my problem is that nginx is looking at the request headers for the cookie value. Is there a way check for a Set-Cookie in the response and use that as a fallback?

  • Windows 2008 server unaccessible without traces in the event log

    I am trying to figure out why a Windows 2008 server became inaccessible in terms of RDP and access to a web application. The server was turned off and then on. Look at the event log at the time it went offline, I can't find anything. And looking at misc application logs, the system was running like normal after it went offline. It has to be said that by mistake the firewall was switched off earlier, so a lot of attempts had been done to access the SQL Server with the sa user as well as RDP login. But the attempts has been going on for days, so nothing new about that. Besides the event logs, is there anywhere else I can go to examine the cause of this? I am also in doubt whether or not a DOS attack or similar would show up in the event log. From a log for a backup application running on this server I can see that an attempt was done to access a remote IP after the server went offline, but got no connection.

  • How do you end up with event-sourcing if you use a xDD approach?

    When working in a TDD or BDD manner your unit tests are supposed to drive your design. But how do you end up with event-sourcing using a xDD techniques? As I see it event sourcing is something you need to adopt early on to take full advantage of it. Lets say that you start without event-sourcing and do a release. Later on when you are releasing version 2.0 you realize that it would be great to use event-sourcing, but at that point you alread have missed all the events from version 1.0 so it makes it much harder to implement. Or do you take some kind of backup of your db from before event-sourcing and use that as base line and then add event-sourcing on top of that?

  • Linux monitor logs and email alerts?

    I have a server with a faulty power button that likes to reboot itself. Usually there are warning signs, like the acpid log file in /var/log starts spamming garbage for about 10hrs or so. Is there an easy way I can have something monitor the acpid log and email me when it has new activity? I wouldn't consider myself extremely advanced so any "guides" you may have for accomplishing something like this would be very helpful and much appreciated. Thank you!

The trigger works perfectly, and sends emails whenever we need them to. HOWEVER, we cannot find a way to get the email to contain information about the error, particularly the error message. Is there any way to have the message change based on the contents of the event-log error?

  • Log requests in apache upon arrival

    Is it possible to log requests in the apache when they arrive not when they have been processed? We have a pretty big web based application and the way it's currently logged is sometimes confusing to read, because each request with it's subrequests is logged "upside down", because apache logs the request after it has been processed, so the initial request is the last entry for this "query". We're wondering if there is a chance to log on arrival?!

It's been a while since I dealt directly with apache, but my memory and google seem to indicate that the only way to rotate apache log files is outside of apache, using a periodic script. Is there some convenient way I'm missing to rotate these?

  • Sysprep and Capture task sequence failing using MDT 2010

    I have created a Windows Deployment Services server in Windows 2008 R2. When I originally set it up I was able to successfully use MDT 2010 to create my boot images as well as creating task sequences that would sysprep and capture, and deploy my custom .wim files. Everything was working perfectly. About a month later I boot up my Windows 7 x86 image and run Windows updates to keep my image up to date. I then go and run my sysprep and capture task sequence and I get the following errors: I searched online for the cause of this error message and it just seems to be a generic permission denied type of error message. I then decided to completely rebuild my VM image from scratch and try again. I am still getting the same error messages as before. The following is what I have tried troubleshooting this issue: Troubleshooting: I have ensured that that UAC and the firewall is turned completely off when trying to capture the image. I have tried recreating the task sequence and making sure that the deployment share is updated. I have ensured that the local Administrator account is enabled and has the same password as specified in the task sequence. I have tried joining the computer to the domain and running the task sequence and I get a different error: I have attempted to run the script from the command prompt with "Run as Administrator" and I still receive the same errors above. For testing purposes I have ensured that Everyone has read/write access to my deployment share. I have spent days on trying to resolve this to no avail. Any ideas?     I have a Windows 2003 R2 machine that is giving an Event ID 8197 about once an hour and ten minutes. The full error is attached below. The machine is primary used to host IIS webpages and SMTP. There is no known scheduled tasks on the machine. I have read a lot of Google Search and Microsoft docs, but none of the suggestions found there have any impact.   • Turn Windows Event Logs EVT files into Syslog to send to LogLogic

    I have a a requirement to analyze 13gb of Windows logs by feeding it into a LogLogic Log aggregator. LogLogic is essentially Linux Syslog server, it can take a Syslog (Tcp/udp 514) feed or log on to a windows share and pull a flat file log. The only problem is that it cannot read the binary .EVT files from Windows Event logs. Normally, I would use Lasso to end the logs to a loglogic as syslog, but it has to read the logs from WMI and uses the DLLs on the log source host to format them and transmit them as syslog in the formatting that LogLogic expects. Does anyone know: A. Is there some kind of product out there to do this? or - B. Is there some way to import them into a Windows event veiwer in a way that lasso (or snare for that matter) will see them as actual real event logs on that host and forward them to the loglogic device as syslog.

  • Tokyo Tyrant ulog / update log management.

    I'm testing Tokyo Tyrant in a master-master setup and have found the ulog grows out of control and locks up the disk. At first I found the -ulim option useful and limited the logfile size, however it simply rolls over to a new log, leaving the old ones to clutter up the partition. I suppose I'll write a shell script that will delete ulogs older than X, once I find out how far back Tokyo Tyrant needs in the update log in order to failover. Does anyone have any experience with this Tokyo Tyrant? Do you have a feel (acknowledging that every install is different based on what is being stored) for the optimal ulog size vs how far back a Tokyo Tyrant instance needs to look in the ulog to assume master status?   • How do I change the number of days a copied transaction log is kept in a log shipping configuration?

    I think this is a pretty simple and perhaps stupid question. I've established log shipping between two SQL Server 2008 servers using the GUI (i.e. the SQL Server Management Studio). It's been running fine -- but now I want to change the number of days the copied files are retained on the secondary server. Is it simply a matter of going back to the GUI and change it there. Is it smart enough just to make that simple change or is the GUI only used to create the initial log shipping configuration?
