  • How do I get excel to close completely after creating a macro in a personal workbook?

    I am using Microsoft Excel 2007 and have several macros in my personal.xlsb workbook, which I use often, so it is very convenient that Excel opens them automatically when it starts. What I don't like is when I click on the "X" in the upper right corner of the window Excel does not exit when I close the last visible workbook. I think that this is because personal.xlsb is still open (though hidden). There are several other questions here on Superuser that have people remove personal.xlsb or move it so it doesn't open on startup (question 65297) or change settings to have only one window show in the taskbar (question 86989). (Sorry there are no hyperlinks--apparently I need more reputation to add additional hyperlinks.) I would like to have personal.xlsb open when I open Excel, have each Excel window show in the taskbar but have Excel exit when I click the "X" on the last workbook that isn't personal.xlsb. Any thoughts on how to achieve this?

  • Excel macro to change external data query connections - e.g. point from one database to another

    I'm looking for a macro/vbs to update all the external data query connections to point at a different server or database. This is a pain to do manually and in versions of Excel before 2007 it sometimes seems impossible to do manually. Anyone have a sample? I see there are different types of connections 'OLEDB' and 'ODBC', so I guess I need to deal with different formats of connection strings?

  • Excel macro to change location of .cub files used by pivot tables? (to allow .xls files that depend

    I often use Excel with pivot tables based on .cub files for OLAP-type analysis. This is great except when you want to move the xls and you realise internally it's got a non-relative reference to the location of the .cub file. How can we cope with this - ie make it convenient to move around xls files that depend on .cub files? The best answer I could come up with is writing a macro that updates the pivot tables' reference to the .cub file location....so I'll pop that in an answer.

  • Excel trend line intercept

    I have an Excel graph with a linear trend line to keep track of users who are updated with a newer version of software: I have 660 users, and the trend line predicts where the number updated reaches 660 to indicate updates complete. Is there a way for it to either give me an actual value for that intercept, or, more conveniently, draw a vertical intercept line where the trend line is projected to hit that number?

  • Moved files only opening as 'read-only' in Excel

    I moved a large directory of Excel files to another machine. When I sign in as myself (administrator signing into domain) then the files open just fine, but when I sign in as a Power User directly onto the machine, the files open as 'Read-Only'. I've reset all the attributes through both Windows and DOS, but to no avail. Also I checked on the Search Indexing bug, but indexing is already turned off. Any ideas?

  • Use a Trendline Formula to Get Values for Any Given X with Excel

    Is there an easy way to apply the trend line formula from a chart to any given X value in Excel? For example, I want to get the Y value for a given X = $2,006.00. I've already taken the formula and retyped it out be: =-0.000000000008*X^3 - 0.00000001*X^2 + 0.0003*X - 0.0029 I am continually making adjustments to the trend line by adding more data, and don't want to retype out the formula every time.

  • Excel changing decimal places on number cells when I edit the cell's formula

    I have a worksheet with thousands of number cells, all formatted "Number, 3 decimal places, use 1000 Separator ()". Starting a few days ago, if I edit a formula in any of these cells to reference another cell, Excel will change the decimal places to 14. For example, "=C$53^$B$4" = "=C$53^$B$10" will cause this. I am not aware of any settings being changed. Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix this?

Is there a way to do this within Excel?

  • Getting Excel add ins to modify array formula parameters; or perform 'ctrl-shift-enter'

    I am trying to make a C# Excel add in change the parameters of an array formula in-place; i.e. do the same as a user modifying an array formula and hitting ctrl-shift-enter. Setting the activeCell.FormulaArray property does not achieve this; it throws a 'You cannot change part of an array' error. Does anyone know how I can achieve this? A solution that also works in VBA would be brilliant. I've tried creating some logic that 'walks' to the perimeter of the array formula and deletes it first, but it doesn't account for adjacent array formulas and I believe this is unnecessarily drastic.

  • Excel 2010: if( , , "") not treated the same as blank for pivot table group by date

    I'm trying to group by date in an Excel 2010 pivot table. The column with dates (i.e., the one want to group by), should be the latest date of 2 other columns if neither is null, or blank. i.e., with a formula like: =IF(AND(A4 <> "", B4 <> ""), MAX(A4,B4), "") Normally, this ""in the IF() formula acts the same as an empty cell. In this case, it is preventing me from grouping by date in the Pivot Table. If I filter the date column by (Blanks), then clear the contents of all those cells, then the pivot table does group by date ok. i.e., "" is not being treated the same as an empty cell.

    We use a spreadsheet as our timecards. The template is stores on the server with links to it on the individual Desktops. I am trying to figgure out the VB so that wnen the cell for username (B5) is blank, the VB will place next sundays date in (B7). After the user enters thier name in B5, I need it to not change B7 again. If I use a formula in B7 "=IF(B5="",TODAY()+8-WEEKDAY(TODAY()),B7)" i need to enable the curcular calcualtions, which don't follow from the template to the spreadsheet, thus causing errors for every individual. Corporate says that they need to be in Excel, because of the import software. Otherwise I'd use Word and the "CreateDate" function. I've been trying to learn the VB to do it, but I was hoping that soem expert could whip out the code in 5 min. flat and just let me disect it.

  • How to retain background colors when pasting between documents in Excel

    I have a script that programatically generates excel spreadsheets - cleaning up ugly reports that are given to us from another organisation. For interests sake; I'm using PHPExcel to generate the "clean" reports. We get these reports every week for an event that happens every couple of months. The reports contain a list of attendees along with a group id that allows us to know that some attendees belong together. To help the event organisers out, I've taken the event ID and generated a unqiue color code (based on the hash of the event ID - truncated to 6 characters). This unique colour code is set as the background color of a cell in each row. This helps organisers quickly visually identify group members. Trouble is, when the organisers copy the rows from the weeks report into the master report (which contains all attendees, not just the ones that signed up this week) - all the colour-codes snap to the master template's color pallette.     folks! Now, I have an Excel file with measurements I made of some color patches (I work at a Press company), with a device called spectrophotometer. Here it is: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B0i8fdSf2ihzRlFYNWd4anItenM Density and Hue are two characteristics of each color patch. The thing is: I'm looking at a non-linear increase between the 25 Color Density measurements I took, but I NEED to know exactly how the color's Hue changes as the color's Density increases. For that, I needed Excel to give me round numbers for the X axis (for example 0,70 to 1,50 in 0,05 increments). And for that, obviously, I needed Excel to calculate the probable Hue Values corresponding to those ghost/round/not-given values of Density (like a kind of advanced rule of three). So, can anyone help me on that? Thanks a lot!
