  • Camera placement sphere for an always fully visible object

    Given an object: With the bounds [x, y, z, width, height, depth] And an orthographic projection [left, right, bottom, top, near, far] I want to determine the radius of a sphere which allows me to randomly place my camera on so that: The object is fully visible from all positions on this sphere The sphere radius is the smallest possible value while still satisfying 1. Assume the object is centered around the origin. How can I find this radius? I'm currently using sqrt(width^2 + height^2 + depth^2) but I'm not sure that's the correct value, as it doesn't take the camera into account. Thanks for any advice. I'm sorry for confusing a few things here. My comments below should clarify what I'm trying to do actually.

  • What do you do when working with multiple languages with different capitalization schemes?

    I'm making a webapp using Django. The Python convention for naming variables is lowercase_with_underscores, but the Javascript convention is camelCase. In addition, I've seen many people use lowercase-with-hyphens for CSS identifiers. Would you suggest using all three naming conventions where appropriate, or picking one and using it, even if the other two recommend something else? Switching back and forth isn't a huge problem, but it can still be mental overhead.

I write Java (and derivative languages with package names) for personal use, but I don't have a personal domain name, so the standard packaging naming convention doesn't hold. Since the same convention is used in Maven group-id's, the problem is the same there. What should I use for the root of my package name?

  • Finally home - and something fully off topic

    Arrived at Munich Pasing last night at 0:50am ... finally :-) On Sunday I've left the Dylan Hotel in Dublin (thanks to the staff there as well: you were REALLY helpful!!) around 7:30pm to go to the port - and came home on Tuesday morning 1:15am. So all together 29:45hrs door-to-door - not bad for nearly 2000km just relying on public transport. And could have been faster if there were seats in ealier TGV's left. But I don't complain at all ;-) Just checked the website of Dublin Airport - it says currently: 17.00pm: Latest on flight disruptions at Dublin Airport The IAA have advised us that based on the latest Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre London Dublin Airport will remain closed for all inbound and outbound commercial flights until 20.00hours. This effectively means that no flights will land or take off at Dublin Airport until then. A further update will be posted this afternoon. When traveling I have always my iPod with me. It has gotten a bit old now (I think I've bought it 3 years ago in November 2007) but it has a 160GB hard disk in it so it fits most of my music collection (not the entire collection anymore as I'm currently re-riping everything to Apple Lossless because at least for my ears it makes a big difference - but I listen to good ol' vinyl as well ...and I don't download compressed music ;-) ). The battery of my little travel companion is still good for more than 20 hours consistent music playback - and there was a band from Texas being in my ears most of the whole journey called Midlake. I haven't heard of them before until I asked a lady at a Munich store some few weeks ago what she's playing on the speakers in the shop. She was amazed and came back with the CD cover but I hesitated to buy it as I always want to listen the tunes before - and at this day I had no time left to do so. But in Dublin I had a bit of spare time on Saturday and I always enter record stores - and the Tower Records was the sort of store I really enjoy and so I've spent there nearly two hours - leaving with 3 Midlake CDs in my bag. So if you are interested just listen those tunes which may remind some people on Fleetwood Mac: As I said in the title, fully off topic ;-)

    Maybe it’s just me, but with some of the MS Products being released in 2010 with "2010" in their product name, is the naming of the SQL Server product suite being released with product name that doesn’t make sense, our latest SQL Server Release which is now just about to be released is "SQL Server 2008 R2" My question is do you think this product name is ? Good, Bad or just plain confusing IMHO I think we could have been better placed if this was named "SQL Server 2010"...(read more)

    The following is effectively a repost of the BizTalk 2004 naming guidlines that I have previously detailed.  I have posted these again for completeness under BizTalk 2009 and to allow an element of separation in case I find some reason to amend these for BizTalk 2009. These guidlines should be universal across any version of BizTalk you may wish to apply them to. General Rules All names should be named with a Pascal convention. Project Namespaces For message schemas: [CompanyName].XML.Schemas.[FunctionalName]* Examples:  ABC.XML.Schemas.Underwriting DEF.XML.Schemas.MarshmellowTradingExchange * Donates potential for multiple levels of functional name, such as Underwriting.Dictionary.Valuation For web services: [CompanyName].Web.Services.[FunctionalName] Examples: ABC.Web.Services.OrderJellyBeans For the main BizTalk Projects: [CompanyName].BizTalk.[AssemblyType].[FunctionalName]* Examples: ABC.BizTalk.Mappings.Underwriting ABC.BizTalk.Orchestrations.Underwriting * Donates potential for multiple levels of functional name, such as Mappings.Underwriting.Valuations Assemblies BizTalk Assembly names should match the associated Project Namespace, such as ABC.BizTalk.Mappings.Underwriting. CompensateTransferFunds Orchestration Types Type Standard Notes Example Multi-Part Message Types <LogicalDocumentType>   Multi-part types encapsulate multiple parts.  The WSDL spec indicates “parts are a flexible mechanism for describing the logical abstract content of a message.”  The name of the multi-part type should correspond to the “logical” document type, i.e. what the sum of the parts describes. InvoiceReceipt   (which might encapsulate an invoice acknowledgement and a payment voucher.) ReceiveReportResponsePortType  or CallEAEPortType (This is a two way port, so Receove or Send alone would not be appropriate.  Could have been ProcessEAERequestPortType etc....) Ports <FunctionDescription>Port Should be named to suggest a grouping of functionality, with pascal casing and suffixed with “Port.”  ReceiveReportResponsePort CallEAEPort Correlation types <DescriptiveName> Should be named based on the logical name of what is being used to correlate.  PurchaseOrderNumber Correlation sets <DescriptiveName> Should be named based on the corresponding correlation type.  If there is more than one, it should be named to reflect its specific purpose within the orchestration.   PurchaseOrderNumber Orchestration parameters <DescriptiveName> Should be named to match the caller’s names for the corresponding variables where appropriate.

  • How do you resolve the common naming collision between type and object?

    Since the standard c# convention is to capitalize the first letter of public properties, the old c++ convention of initial capital for type names, and initial lowercase for non-type names does not prevent the classic name collision where the most obvious object name matches the type name: class FooManager { public BarManager BarManager { get; set; } // Feels very wrong. // Recommended naming convention? public int DoIt() { // 1st and 2nd Bar Manager are different symbols return BarManager.Blarb + BarManager.StaticBlarb; } } class BarManager { public int Blarb { get; set; } public static int StaticBlarb { get; set; } } It seems to compile, but feels so wrong.   • CSS naming guildlines with elements with multiple classes

    Its seems like there are 2 ways someone can handle naming classes for elements that are designed to have multiple classes. One way would be: <span class="btn btn-success"></span> This is something that twitter bootstrap uses. Another possibility I would think would be: <span class="btn success"></span> It seems like the zurb foundation uses this method. Now the benefits of the first that I can see is that there less chance of outside css interfering with styling as the class name btn-success would not be as common as the class name success. The benefit of the second as I can see is that there is less typing and potential better style reuse. Are there any other benefits/disadvantages of either option and is one of them more popular than the other?

I have noticed many JavaScript methods using single character parameter names, such as in the following example. doSomething(a,b,c) I don't like it, but a fellow JavaScript developer convinced me that this is done to reduce the file size, noting that JavaScript files have to be transferred to the browser. Then I found myself talking to another developer. He showed me the way that Firefox will truncate variable names to load the page faster. Is this a standard practice for web browsers? What are the best-practice naming conversions that should be followed when programming in JavaScript? Does identifier length matter, and if so, to what extent?

    When you create a test for your class, what kind of naming convention do you use for the tests? How thorough are your tests? I have lately switched from the conventional camel case test names to lower case letters with underscores. I have found this increases the readability and causes me to write better tests. A simple utility class: public class ArrayUtils { public static T[] gimmeASlice(T[] anArray, Integer start, Integer end) { // implementation (feeling lazy today) } } I have seen some people who would write a test like this: public class ArrayUtilsTest { @Test public void testGimmeASliceMethod() { // do some tests } } A more thorough and readable test would be: public class ArrayUtilsTest { @Test public void gimmeASlice_returns_appropriate_slice() { // ... } @Test public void gimmeASlice_throws_NullPointerException_when_passed_null() { // ... } @Test public void gimmeASlice_returns_end_of_array_when_slice_is_partly_out_of_bounds() { // ... } @Test public void gimmeASlice_returns_empty_array_when_slice_is_completely_out_of_bounds() { // ... } } Looking at this test, you have no doubt what the method is supposed to do. And, when one fails, you will know exactly what the issue is.

  • Why is a fully transparent pixel still rendered?

    I am trying to make a pixel shader that achieves an effect similar to this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1uZvurrhig&feature=related My basic idea is render the scene to a temp render target then Render the previously rendered image with a slight fade on to another temp render target Draw the current scene on top of that Draw the results on to a render target that persists between draws Draw the results on to the screen But I am having problems with the fading portion. If I have my pixel shader return a color with its A component set to 0, shouldn't that basically amount to drawing nothing? (Assuming that sprite batch blend mode is set to AlphaBlend) To test this I have my pixel shader return a transparent red color. Instead of nothing being drawn, it draws a partially transparent red box.     I'm transforming a Windows 7 PC into a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.10. Following other questions on this site, I've mounted my Windows drive by adding this to fstab UUID=blabla /windows ntfs users,defaults,umask=000 0 0 It appears to work well, I can read and write, but it appears to be a bit crippled still. When I tried to update an SVN working copy with RabbitVCS, it complained that it couldn't write to a temporary file inside the working copy, even though the permissions are all on 0777 inside /windows (by default, I haven't done that manually). It even corrupted that working copy :( It works when I use the command line SVN client with sudo, but that's hardly user friendly.

  • The Importance of Fully Specifying a Problem

    I had a customer call this week where we were provided a forced crashdump and asked to determine why the system was hung. Normally when you are looking at a hung system, you will find a lot of threads blocked on various locks, and most likely very little actually running on the system (unless it's threads spinning on busy wait type locks). This vmcore showed none of that. In fact we were seeing hundreds of threads actively on cpu in the second before the dump was forced. This prompted the question back to the customer: What exactly were you seeing that made you believe that the system was hung? It took a few days to get a response, but the response that I got back was that they were not able to ssh into the system and when they tried to login to the console, they got the login prompt, but after typing "root" and hitting return, the console was no longer responsive. This description puts a whole new light on the "hang". You immediately start thinking "name services". Looking at the crashdump, yes the sshds are all in door calls to nscd, and nscd is idle waiting on responses from the network. Looking at the connections I see a lot of connections to the secure ldap port in CLOSE_WAIT, but more interestingly I am seeing a few connections over the non-secure ldap port to a different LDAP server just sitting open. My feeling at this point is that we have an either non-responding LDAP server, or one that is responding slowly, the resolution being to investigate that server. Moral When you log a service ticket for a "system hang", it's great to get the forced crashdump first up, but it's even better to get a description of what you observed to make to believe that the system was hung.
