• How do I setup a custom Gem.path using JRuby::Rack?

  Hi Nick et al, I've been having some fun looking at to source code of JRuby-Rack and Rubygems to try to figure out how to solve a org.jruby.rack.RackInitializationException: no such file to load -- compass in my rackup script cased by require 'compass'. I'm passing in a custom 'gem.path' as a servlet init parameter and it is being correctly picked up by jruby-rack as far as I can tell by debugging in my rackup script: ENV['GEM_PATH'] => '/foo/lib/.jruby/gems' (expected) but rubygems seems to be broken: Gem.path => file:/foo/lib/jruby-complete-1.4.0.jar!/META-INF/jruby.home/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 I'm not sure why rubygems has not adjusted it's gem_path nor the LOAD_PATH, thus breaking require? • What is a good resource for HTML character codes -> glyph and...

  Hi, I've already found a good site to convert HTML character codes to their respective glyphs: http://www.public.asu.edu/~rjansen/glyph_encoding.html However, I need a bit more information. Does anyone know of a site like the one above that also provides information on what type of character code it is? Meaning, is it a special character? Is the glyph visible? Etc... So far I have found some tables with this information, but they aren't as complete as the resource above. I would really like to get my hands on a complete table. Thanks, -Ben

• C# Application crashes with Buffer Overrun in deployed (.exe) version, but not in Visual Studio

  Hi, I have a c# Windows Forms application that runs perfectly from within Visual Studio, but crashes when its deployed and run from the .exe. It crashes with a Buffer Overrun error...and its pretty clear that this error is not being thrown from within my code. Instead, windows must be detecting some sort of buffer overrun and shutting down the application from the outside. I don't think there's one specific line of code that is causing it..it simply happens intermittently. Does anybody have any thoughts on what the possible causes of a Buffer Overrun error might be, and why it would only occur in the deployed application and not when run from with Visual Studio? • Detecting if the user selected "All Users" or "Just Me" in a Custom Action

  Hi, I'm trying to detect if the user has selected the "All Users" or the "Just Me" radio during the install of my program. I have a custom action setup that overrides several methods (OnCommit, OnBeforeInstall, etc.). Right now I'm trying to find out this information during OnCommit. I've read that the property I want to get at is the ALLUSERS property, but I haven't had any luck finding where it would be stored in instance/local data. Does anyone know of a way to get at it? -Ben

• Eclipse: How to build an executable jar with external jar?

  Hi all, I am trying to build an executable jar program which depends on external jar downloaded. In my project, I included them in the build path and can be run and debug within eclipse. When I tried to export it to a jar, I can run the program but I can't when I try to press a button which includes function calls and classes from the external jar. I have edited the environment variables (Windows XP) CLASSPATH to include paths of all the external jar, but it doesn't work. A point to note is that I got compile warnings while exporting my executable jar, but it doesn't show up any description about the warnings. • jQuery UI Dialog cause page jump on open & close on ASP.NET

  Hello all, I have an ASP.NET C# page, with image thumbnails in it. I created a script that opens a jQuery UI Dialog on each hover on a thumbnail that shows me the thumbnail in larger size in a dialog view, and when I hover out - dialog closes. My little annoying problem is, that in every mouseover (trigger dialog to open) - the page makes itself 'longer' - a scrollbar appears on the side of the browser, and it seems like the page gets longer when a dialog is openning, but it shouldn't do so. When I hover off (mouseout) - the dialog disappears and the page returns to its normal state. Because of this- when I hover through the thumbnails, my page 'jumps'. I looked for a solution for this, and I've added return false; for each dialog open, and close - and it still doesn't make any different. Sorry for the unperfect english, and thanks for all helpers!

From my understanding, what I'm looking for is similar to Google Keywords Tool, but I prefer not to fill in their captcha everytime, and I want to know only the statistics that suit the entered term. • How should jruby-jars and jruby-rack be added to the classpath using warbler?

  Hi again, I've been reading through the warbler source code, and I can't figure out how the jruby-jars and jruby-rack jars are meant to end up on the servlet classpath? It seems warbler is copying them into web-inf/gems/gems/<gemname>/lib/<jarname>.jar but they are not on the classpath. I'm guessing that if I put them in my ruby apps lib/ folder they would be copied to web-inf/lib and all would be well, however, it seems odd to have 2 copies of the jar in the war file, is that what I am meant to do?   I have an update method in my users controller that I call from a HTTPService in Flex 4. • Creating GUI using XML file in C#

  How can I create automatic GUI using XML file in C#? Should I write a parser for the file and define a sort of "protocol" for the file's structure, and after the parse - create the GUI controls manually (respective to the data in the files)? Or is there a better way? Is there a tool, or a built-in code in the .NET environment which can do that for me automatically? (I am currently working with win forms, but I am willing to consider any other technology - as long as it's supported in MONO, since the code should be portable to Linux as well).

  I would like to add up and down voting to my iPhone appilcation - MyStacks, for this I need the to be able to authenticate the user with SO. I'm look at adapting the Twitter-OAuth-iPhone library. However The problem I have is obtaining the consumer and secret key. to use OAuth, do I need to obtain a different key for each provider? In order to obtain a consumer key from google the application needs to have a domain name, but this being an iPhone app of course i don't have one, does this mean that I can't use OAuth? Is there any other way to programatically authenticate SO? Thanks, Ben

  I am dealing with an interesting situation where I perform many database updates in a single transaction. If these updates fail for any reason, the transaction is rolled-back. IDbTransaction transaction try { transaction = connection.BeginTransaction(); // do lots of updates (where at least one fails) transaction.Commit(); } catch { transaction.Rollback(); // results in a timeout exception } finally { connection.Dispose(); } I believe the above code is generally considered the standard template for performing database updates within a transaction. The issue I am facing is that whilst transaction.Rollback() is being issued to SQL Server, it is also timing out on the client. • Compressing an uncompressed MSI file

  We have a setup project that produces an uncompressed MSI file and no Setup.exe at all, to be later compressed by NSIS. In a special build setting, I want to copy that MSI before it's being wrapped by NSIS, change the copy, and keep it. I would also like to compress it, after it has been created by the msbuild. Is there a simple way (command line tool of some kind, maybe?) I can use to just compress an already created msi file?

  Hello all, Wer'e developing an ASP.NET C# application, which will contain an authentication system that authenticates users in multiple levels (user, admin, super-admin, etc.). Our idea is NOT to use the built in ASP.NET forms authentication feature. Our plan is to create a whole 'new' system for it- based on the Session object, and SQL database contains users' info such as username & password. Is there any SERIOUS different between our idea to the Forms authentication feature? What security risks do we take? How do we solve them? • GXT/GWT html content reloads when switching tabs

  I am working on a GXT/GWT project. I have two tabs in which content is set based on selections from a drop down menu. The content in one tab is an embedded video (Google Video or youtube video) The problem is that when switching tabs, the video reloads and starts from the beginning again. What I would like is to be able to switch tabs and have the video continue to play or pause when the focus switches to another tab. Any ideas, as always, are greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ben

  Currently I am using ViewData or TempData for object persistance in my ASP.NET MVC application. However in a few cases where I am storing objects into ViewData through my base controller class, I am hitting the database on every request (when ViewData["whatever"] == null). It would be good to persist these into something with a longer lifespan, namely session. Similarly in an order processing pipeline, I don't want things like Order to be saved to the database on creation. I would rather populate the object in memory and then when the order gets to a certain state, save it. So it would seem that session is the best place for this? Or would you recommend that in the case of order, to retrieve the order from the database on each request, rather than using session? Thoughts, suggestions appreciated. Thanks Ben

  I have a couple of functions inside a class that essentially do the same thing: public function fn_a(){ return __FUNCTION__; } public function fn_b(){ return __FUNCTION__; } public function fn_c(){ return __FUNCTION__; } I need those functions to remain in their current names so I intentionally did not do: public function fn_($letter){ return __FUNCTION__.$letter; } I was hoping for some sort of way to minify the verboseness of code here, since they all do the same. The ultimate situation would be something like this: public functions fn_a, fn_b, fn_c() { return __FUNCTION__; } Another solution, if applicable, might be doing something like Class's "extends": fn_b, fn_c extend fn_a? What do you think guys?

• CKEditor 3.2 is un-editable in jQuery simpleModal

  Hello all, I noticed that this isn't the first time that this issue comes up, but I still couldn't find the right and working solution for me. Here is the thing- In my ASP.NET aspx page I created a div element, with a <cc1:CKEditor> control tag within it. This div is hidden, and is attached to a jQuery SimpleModal plugin. The problem is- that when I trigger the modal-opening and the modal shows up with the editor within it, the editor is UNEDITABLE, locked. How can I fix it, and enable the editing in the CKEditor's textarea? Thanks in advance!

• CLR Function not working in restored database

  So I've restore a database with CLR assemblies in it from one physical server to another. One of the functions in the CLR assembly essentially does an uncompress of some compressed data. When I run this function against data in the restored database it returns the compressed data (rather than the uncompressed data). No error is thrown in SSMS or in the SQL server error logs. At the suggestion of others, I've checked differences in the database ownership (both owned by sa), trustworthiness (both set to not trustworthy). I also checked differences in the .NET framework installs on both machines but found only that the target machine had a 1.1 version installed that the source didn't. I don't know what else to try.
