• MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

  On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files. • How can I use mobile network account at server so home sync works

  I would like to be able to use a mobile network account while sitting at my server. I had os x server 10.6 running on a mac mini server but recently got a new quad core iMac and want to take advantage of the extra power. My problem - I can sit at the server and log into the mobile network account but can not get it to sync back. When I attempt to sync it get error message that the afp share point is unavailable and that the files are hosted locally. My goal is to be able to use the new iMac as the server and set a user account so that it remains synced so when the account is accessed from other clients, particularly my macbook pro. Is mobile account the best route? Would an external account be a better option. Any advice or ideas of where to read up on this would be much appreciated.

  I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

  I have a trouble, configuring a home network. Here is how my devices are connected together: Internet     ? Wi-Fi Router ? MacBook     ? iMac ?ethernet cable? Synology NAS I have no ability to plugin NAS right into the Wi-Fi router. The problem is that MacBook does not see NAS, because they are in different networks — I configured Wi-Fi Router to serve 192.168.10.0/24 addresses, and configured iMac's ethernet connection to use 192.168.20/24 network. Is there a way to setup route from MacBook to the NAS?

• $PATH is driving me nuts

  OK, apologies if this is something dumb, but I'm running out of ideas. Goal: prepend /usr/local/bin to $PATH Problem: $PATH won't do what I want or expect How I got here: I want to start learning to program, so I'm getting comfortable messing around under the hood, but don't have a lot of experience. I installed the fish shell (because it's friendly!) using homebrew and set it as my default shell (under system prefs>users & groups>advanced). At some point, I ran brew doctor to see if my installs were all kosher, and it suggested I move /usr/local/bin to the front of $PATH so that I could use my installation of git rather than the system copy. Fine - but between path_helper and fish, something was happening to $PATH that was out of my control, and I could never get the paths arranged in the right way. Environment: OSX 10.8.2, upgraded from 10.7ish, with xcode and devtools installed, plus x11, homebrew, and fish More info: I've set my user's default shell back to bash, and tried a variety of shells thru terminal.app - bash, fish, sh. I moved /usr/local/bin to the top of /etc/paths but it didn't change anything. I looked thru the various config.fish files and commented out stuff that might mess with $PATH, didn't help. So, it looks like path_helper isn't even doing what it's supposed to anymore? I'm sure there is some well-defined behavior here that I don't understand, or I borked something while trying to fix it. • Active Directory password update not recognized on OS X 10.7.3?

  We have a few Macs in our office which are bound to our Active Directory (Server 2k8R2) domain for login authentication and access to file shares. For the most part this has worked without trouble. I recently changed my AD password (from the Windows box that is my main desktop machine), and my iMac still wants my old password for logins—even after a reboot. It correctly prompts for the new password when I attempt to connect to Windows smb file shares. The last time I changed my password, the iMac was running Snow Leopard and picked up the password change as expected. I'm a little bit of an OS X n00b, so I apologize if this should be obvious. My searching has turned up numerous issues people have had with Lion and Active Directory, but not this particular problem. Possibly related, we do have mobile accounts enabled for AD in the Directory Utility options. I assume this causes credentials to be cached locally, but it's not clear to me how to get them to update.

• Boot camp install from a HDD image

  How would one go about imaging an old work computer (old IBM aptiva from 2001ish) with Windows XP and lots of stuff (VPN client with settings etc) to a new iMac, while preserving Mac OSX? I can't simply install XP on the iMac and then reinstall/copy across stuff; it NEEDS to be an image. Can you even image smaller HDD's and then place them on large ones, or do they have to be the same size? Recommendations on how I go about this? Edit: It MUST be boot camp. I don't want to virtualize it from within OsX

• Remote Desktop from Mac to Windows (Microphone, Sounds must work)

  I have a laptop that is running Windows 7. I want to remotely connect to it using my 27" iMac. I was using an app called "Jump Desktop" and I really like it. The only problem is that I cannot use Skype, GoToMeeting, etc... because the microphone doesn't work remotely. Any recommendations on other apps that support remote mic/sound? In other works I want to use solely my iMac, remote into my Windows 7 laptop, use skype, etc.... on the laptop. Thanks

  Hello All, I have a 32bit iMac that I am writing an iPhone app in Xcode with, and I was wondering if I saved my project to a flash drive and dropped it on my MacBookPro which is 64 bit and continued to code the iPhone project on my laptop in Xcode would this cause a problem? I don't see how it would since the target is not for either of those computers, but I thought I would ask since I would like to work on the project when I am not always around my iMac. • Testing IPhone code on Windows

  I'm picking up a new Dell laptop. My primary machine is a IMac. I will most likely have to write some IPhone projects for someone in the future. While I do most of my work on the IMac there would be maybe 25% of the time where I work from my laptop. Can anyone tell me if I use objective C / IPhone SDK's if there is a generic objective C compiler I can use to see if my code would in theroy work? Not looking to do hackintosh or anything like that. My other option is to just get a discounted mac mini (Think this is most likely) as well as the Dell. Thanks for any advice

• 12.10: login screen never goes blank

  I have installed the 12.10 beta (with all updates) on my iMac Early 2008. One annoying problem I'm having is that, when I log out of my account and go back to the login screen (lightdm, per default), the screen stays on: it never goes blank. This is not good for my display I guess! The screensaver (set to just a blank screen) works just fine when I'm logged in. The problem only appears at the login screen. Any ideas?

• Migrate installation from one HDD to another?

  I have a server with a 64 GB SSD inside. It runs just fine, but occasionally there's a hiccup that causes it to nearly fill up. When that happens my server starts to lockup and generally misbehave. I'm looking to buy a bigger SSD (either 128 GB or 256 GB) but I'm a bit unsure of how best to make the transition. For a start, I don't have an external monitor. If I need one I'll have to borrow it from work. Most of the time I just SSH into the server from my iMac. The only solution I can think of would be to buy two FW800 2.5" cases, boot from the 64 GB SSD and clone it to the 128 GB SSD. Seem a bit excessive but it might be my best option. I do have more than one SATA port on my server, but they're all currently being use for storage drives. They don't mount by default, so I could unplug them and just have the two SSDs and do the whole thing via SSH. This is another option I'm considering. My main concern with either is how best to make sure everything goes across. I want a carbon copy of the first one onto the second. This is especially important because I have a ZFS volume (my storage) and I'm a bit unfamiliar with how to move everything across. I could just start fresh and reinstall everything on the SSD, but that seems like extra trouble I don't need. So any advice on how best to achieve my goals would be appreciated. Thanks! • Mac: window manager frozen, have ssh access

  I have a Mac which regularly runs into a problem. The user interface stops reponding, showing a "frozen" user interface. The mouse is still moving but clicking does not trigger anything. This happens about once a week. Solution so far is to force switch-off the Mac and reboot it. I have ssh root access to the Mac. Killing (kill -9) the active application has no visible impact on what is shown on the screen. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? Is there a way to restart the window manager from the ssh shell? Killing /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Resources/WindowServer seems not to be possible. The Mac is an early 2008 iMac and runs Lion with latest updates. /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports is empty. Update: Problem stays after update to Mountain Lion. The WindowServer process is in "uninterruptible wait" state ("U" flag in ps output set): imac:~ root# ps ax|awk "NR==1|| /WindowServer/"|grep -v awk PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 86 ?? • Unable to mount iso as dvd drive in VMware Fusion 6

  I have a newer iMac without an optical drive and some DVDs that I needed to run software off of. This software will have you juggle discs to read data off of them, and the data can't simply be copied to the machine's drive. I used a windows machine to make ISOs of these DVDs. And the first disc, the installer, it will mount in VMware and let you install the software. It then asks for the other discs, and these won't mount as ISOs. If I mount them as drive images, they'll show up on the iMac's and I have access to all the files. But if I try to mount them as the dvd drive through Fusion, nothing happens. For that matter, I'm unable to attempt it a second time, as Fusion believes that the there is already an iso mounted as the dvd, while nothing has happened as far as the guest OS is concerned. drutil eject will allow me to eject the ghost/non-existent dvd, at which point I can make a second (equally futile) attempt. Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? How can the ISO be valid enough to mount as a drive image, but not valid enough for Fusion to mount it as if it were a dvd?

• sudo port install arm-elf-gcc3 fails with "No defined site for tag: gcc…"

  Am trying to get the ARM plugin for Eclipse (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuarmeclipse/) going on iMac i7, OS 10.6.3, Xcode 3.2.2 (don't want to upgrade during my project). The plugin needs (IIRC) arm-elf-gcc3, which needs darwinports for "easy" install. • ReWriteRule is redirecting rather rewriting

  At the moment I have two machines that I do web development on; an iMac for work at the office and a MacBook for when I have to work on the move. They both running OS X 10.6 have the same version of PHP, Apache, etc running on them. Both computers have the same files of the website, including the .htaccess file (see below). On the MacBook the URLs are rewritten nicely, masking the URL they are pointing to (eg site/page/page-name), however on the iMac they simply redirect to the page (eg site/index.php?method=page&value=page-name) which is making switching back and forth between machines a bit of a pain! I'm sure it must be a config setting somewhere, but I can't for the life of me find it. Has anyone got a remedy? Many thanks. I'm fairly convinced there is a much nice way of writing this htaccess file without loosing access several key folders as well! • Printer features don't work when printing to Canon Printers ir5185 and ir7095 in Snow Leopard

  Recently updated to iMac running Snow Leopard. Connected Canon printers ir7095 and ir5185 via ethernet and downloaded latest drivers from Canon website. Can print to both from InDesign CS3, however, when I select printer features such as heavy paper and printing to stack bypass, it prints but just defaults to plain paper in drawer 1. Also, when printing to ir7095, 0001 prints five times on sheet in background. Is there any way to get the printer features that are available to work?

• How do LCD monitors compare to LED monitors?

  I'd love to get this LCD monitor, but I'm wondering if I should hold out until more LED monitors are on the market. I really like the brightness of the 27" iMac monitor and the above monitor is only rated at 5 cd/m2 less than that monitor, but wouldn't a back lit LED monitor appear to be much brighter than an LCD monitor? How do LCD monitors compare to their LED counterparts?

• macosx not recognizing held down keys on boot

  I'm running fully updated snow leapord on a new model imac. I am unable to boot into macosx. I do have build 7600 of windows 7 that the computer will automatically boot to. I do not have the bootcamp manager on windows 7. The computer is not recognizing any held down keys when I try to either boot from cd or force macosx boot or anything. How can I get the computer to load up osx?

• quicktime recording: only a region?

  The newest QT has a feature to record or capture the current screen. My iMac 27 is too big if I want to record the whole screen. Can I designate a region or an application window for recording? I could not find a way to do that. Not sure if I have to use alternative applications to do it.
