These errors are quite new, so I feel that their settings (dma, write-cache, ...) have been modified by some upgrades. I've already used hdparm to set write-cache off on the HDDs. But it seems like I need to review some other setting(s) too. With oldest distro it was easy to know about the hardware settings, but now on Quantal/Precise its deeply hidden for the average user. So i would like to know how to view/modify these settings.   I need to get my box up to par or android development, but cannot get ia32-libs to install for the life of me. Can anyone help? The error Android's tool gave me was Stopping ADB server failed (code -1) and after a bit of investigation I found that I needed to install the ia32-libs which from my understanding is a pain.   I tried to install Matlab2013a in my laptop (Ubuntu system). I download a ISO file (very big) and followed their instruction: mount it and run "install". But it returns me an error: Cannot locate Java Runtime Enviroment (JRE). The directory ~/Matlab/sys/java/jre/glnx86/jre does not exist. In the folder ~/Matlab/sys/java/jre/, what I have is "glnxa64". Does that mean that I can't install this version of Matlab in my 32bit laptop? This java comes from Matlab. How should I get it work?

  SORRY for the newbie question, but I am still learning. I am wondering if x86 simply refers to the intel CPUs and AMD64 simply refers to the AMD CPUs? While....32bit and 64bit to the processor types? I was trying to download the intel 64bit version of the Ubuntu installer, but it wont give the option of x86 and AMD64....only the 32bit and 64bit can be chosen. Does this mean that someone with an Intel CPU and another person with an AMD CPU will download the same install file? (obviously depending on the bit version of their CPUs this might differ....but that's another thing).

• Unable to install Steam 64bit - Wrong architecture (Lubuntu 12.04)

  I'm on a new install of Lubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire 5534 (specifications here, tl;dr: AMD dual-core 64bit) trying to install steam_latest.deb from the Steam website. When I open gdebi to install, it tells me that it's uninstallable because it's for a i386 architecture. I've tried installing ia32-libs (installed, no success), gdebi --add-architecture i386 (with and without --force, command unknown). This is all I've found to fix the problem, but none of it has worked for me. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks for your time.

• What version was installed? x64 or i686? What's the difference exactly?

  Okay, so heres my problem. I recently started migrating several services to individual VMs on my box, using VirtualBox 4.1. I created a new VirtualBox VM with guest type "Ubuntu (64 Bit)". I've already done this before and it worked like a charm. I then installed unbutu server (12.04) from the exact same dvd image. All the time I thought that it should have installed x64. I already put a few hours work into the new VM, migrating the webserver and mail system etc. Today I tried installing a x64 piece of software and it suddenly told me that it needed x64 and I had only i686. I checked uname -a and this is what it gave me: Linux hostname 3.2.0-29-generic-pae #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:25:43 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Any guesses what went wrong? All the time I was thinking I had a x64 system. Any way to move to a "real" x64? I have a second VM on this host which is running x64 just fine .. P.S.: grep --color=always -iw lm /proc/cpuinfo returns lm among the flags.

  I have a desktop PC which I built a while back. It has an Athlon XP 2500+, 2.5GB RAM, and an Nvidia (PNY Verto) Geforce 6200. I removed the CD drive to add another hard drive so I install from a USB flash drive. When I try to install 12.04 it seems to work just fine. The GUI boots up and wifi even connects to my router. I go through the language screen, the partition screen, the keyboard screen, the location screen, and the import my Windows settings screen just fine. But as soon as I'm done with all that the next screen goes black and displays this message: drm:[drm_crtc_helper_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC6] Since the GUI starts just fine earlier during the install, I know I shouldn't be having any display problems, but I am. How do I get Ubuntu to install properly? I have four IDE hard drives, all Western Digital: a 250GB, a 160GB, a 40GB occupied by Windows XP, and a 120GB that I'm trying to use for Ubuntu. 3GB of the 120GB drive are formatted for swap. • Windows 32-bit and 64-bit and GPT

  I know similar questions have been asked before across several sites, but the answers at least to me have been confusing and conflicting. My understanding has always been that 64-bit Windows will create and use GPT disks just fine, but will not boot from them without a UEFI BIOS. Also my understanding WAS that 32-bit Windows could not use GPT at all and so is always restricted to 2.2TB disks, which was another reason to move to 64-bit on top of the 4GB memory limit. But I have now read that this isn't correct: 32-bit Windows will create and use GPT disks just as 64-bit does. The only resriction is that you can't boot 32-bit Windows even if you DO have a UEFI BIOS? I don't think much of the literature has explained this well. There are several tools floating around for creating virtual disks or 2.2+.8GB partition schemes and such for 32-bit systems. Why when it seems you can use GPT in 32-bit Windows anyway. It also seems that people blame MS for lagging behind with respect to all of this: but it seems the issue is with BIOS manufactures not supporting UEFI rather than MS not supporting GPT... Is my new understanding now correct?

• Windows Server 2008 32 bit & windows 7 professional SP1

  I'm testing my new Windows Server 2008 32 bit edition (2 servers) as a server and Windows 7 professional 32 bit as a client. Let say one is a primary domain controller (PDC) and the other is a backup domain controller (BDC) like the old time to ease. Every setup were done in the PDC and just replicate to BDC. Didn't setup anything, just install the server with AD, DNS, DHCP, that's all. Then I use my windows 7 pro 32 bit to join the domain. It worked. After that I tried to change the password of a the user (not administrator) but it always failed said it didn't meet the password complexity setup while in fact there's no setup at all either in account policy, default domain policy or even local policy. Tried to disable the password complexity in the default domain policy instead of didn't set all then test again but still failed. Browse and found suggestion to setup the minimum and maximum password age to 0 but it also failed. Tried to restart the server and the client then change password, still failed with the same error, didn't meet password complexity setup. Tried to see in the rsop.msc but didn't found anything. In fact, if I see the setup in another system with windows server 2003 and windows xp, using rsop.msc I can see there's setup for computer configuration windows settings security settings account policies password policy. I also have a windows 7 pro 32 bit in a windows server 2003 32 bit environment but unable to find the same setting using rsop but this windows 7 works fine. anyone can give suggestion what's the problem and what to do so I can change my windows 7 pro laptop password in a windows server 2008 environment? another thing, is it the right assumption that we can see all the policies setting in windows 7 whether it's in a windows server 2003 or 2008 environment? thanks.

  I have a 32-bit Java installed just for Chrome and 64-bit Java JDK for everything else. When I type java -version in the cmd, the 32-bit Java answers: C:\>java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing) This is the 32-bit JRE installed for Chrome (the installer name was chromeinstall.exe). • Cannot install Java 7 update 9 32-bit on Win 7 64

  As there were several versons of Java on my laptop, I decided to uninstall them all and reinstall only the current version. I uninstalled all 64-bit and 32-bit versions using Revo Uninstaller. After dowloading the current versions, when attempting to install them, I get a message that both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions cannot be installed as they are already installed. Both the Windows 7 Programs and Features and Revo show no Java installed at al. I then tried the Microsoft Fixit for install and uninstall issues (KB 2438651). I was then able to install the 64-bit version, but continued to have the issue with the 32-bit version. I ran CCleaner, Glary Utilities and Auslogics Registry Cleaner, and noticed Java keys that were to be uninstalled. After cleaning the registry, I attemped to install the 32-bit version of Java once more, to no avail. Any suggestions on how to rectify this problem? Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

  Hi All, Is it just me, or is Windows 7 x64 awfully unstable when it comes to 32-bit processes? If I ever find myself in a situation where a 32-bit process hangs or otherwise misbehaves, terminating the process (through e.g. task manager) seems to fail every time - there are no error messages or anything, it's just that the process refuses to terminate. Anyone else have the same problems running 32-bit applications on x64 Windows? Thanks, Will.

  We develop an application which currently works in 32 bit mode only. It worked fine in RHEL 5 but failed to work in RHEL 6. The reason is RHEL 6 by default is installed with 64 bit libraries only. Moreover, we didn't find a way to choose installation of 32bit runtime environment during or after system installation. Of course, we did find a way to install three rpm packages with 32 bit libraries required for our application to work. But it looks like unpleasant for our customers (we have to install three rpms from the DVD in the command line). So the question is: Is there a convenient way for RHEL 6 customers to install 32 bit libraries it their RHEL 6 system? Say, any user-friendly item in menu or a special command that install the same set of 32 bit system libraries that existed in RHEL 5? What are best practicies in such cases?

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). As you know, Office 2010 client now comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The question is, should you go with 32 bit or 64 bit? 64 is bigger than 32 .. so 64 is better no? NO! Given a choice, or unless you have a very strong reason not to – GO WITH 32 bit. Why is that? Here is why - 32 bit apps actually work better on 64 bit OS’s in most scenarios due to WoW, and the additional 64 bit VLSW calculations. If you have 2007 installations to support, SharePoint designer 2010 cannot be used to work with SharePoint 2007 sites. So you will have to install SharePoint designer 2007 32bit side by side with SharePoint designer 2010 32 bit side by side. So you cannot mix and match 32 bit and 64 bit here. Of course you can virtualize and not have this problem to begin with :-D. 64 bit office will break many things on your SharePoint experience for that client – example, that fancy datasheet view won’t work on lists. 32 bit office apps don’t have this issue. There are some extreme situations where you DO want 64 bit client apps though. Specifically if you have HUGE excel sheets to work with, then 64 bit office client excel is much better than the equivalent 32 bit excel. Comment on the article ....

• Difference between "bit-number" in filesystem and that in OS (like 32,64 bit)?

  I encountered 2 terms ,"FAT32", a file system and "Windows Vista 32 bit". I found that the meaning of a 32 bit OS is that that the OS deals with data in chunks of minimum size 32 bits. I don't quite understand the depth of that, but I figure ,every file in that system with that OS should have a minimum size of 32 bits. I also read that these 32 bits are used to hold data of files' location(reference) and details. Which of it is it? I have also read that 4 GB of RAM is all that is needed at the most if you're on a 32 bit OS. But I don't understand why. If there are 32 bits to hold info about files and their locations,there can be 2^32 possible combinations of it. But I have found in many places,2^32 is divided by 1024 thrice to get 4GB. Why? Did that 2^32 become equal to 2^32 bytes? And about filesystems I read a similar explanation for what 32 means in FAT32. It is supposed to mean that 32 bits are used to number file system block. Now how is different from the number before the OS?
