  • Learning to write organized and modular programs (C++)

    Hi All, I'm a computer science student, and I'm just starting to write relatively larger programs for my coursework (between 750 - 1500 lines). Up until now, it's been possible to get by with any reasonable level of modularization and object oriented design. However, now that I'm writing more complex code for my assignments I'd like to learn to write better code. Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources for learning about what sort of things to look for when designing your program's architecture so that you can make it as modularized as possible?   • Ubuntu Cannot change permissions on files I own and have RW to.

    Hello there, I have a harddrive full of backups which for me is mounted at /media/chronus_ I have been trying to give another user rw permission to this drive.   • iptables - quick safety eval & limit max conns over time

    Working on locking down a *nix server box with some fancy iptable(v1.4.4) rules. I'm approaching the matter with a "paranoid, everyone's out to get me" style, not necessarily because I expect the box to be a hacker magnet but rather just for the sake of learning iptables and *nix security more throughly. Everything is well commented - so if anyone sees something I missed please let me know! The *nat table's "--to-ports" point to the only ports with actively listening services. (aside from pings) Layer 2 apps listen exclusively on chmod'ed sockets bridged by one of the layer 1 daemons. Layers 3+ inherit from layer 2 in a similar fashion. The two lines giving me grief are commented out at the very bottom of the *filter rules.     I have a dictionary object of type Dictionary and trying to use StreamWriter to output the entire content to a text file but failed to find the correct method from the Dictionary class. using (StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter("myfile.txt")) { sw.WriteLine(dictionary.First()); } I can only retrieve the first element and it is bounded by a square bracket plus a comma separator in between as well: [Peter, Admin] and would be nice to have [Peter Admin] (without the comma)

    Is there a character, say, $, SELECT * FROM Persons WHERE firstName='Peter' AND areaCode=$; such that the statement would return the same as SELECT * FROM Persons WHERE firstName='Peter' i.e. areaCode=$ would always return always true and, thus, effectively “turns of” the criteria areaCode=... I’m writing a VBA code in Excel that fetches some rows based on a number of criteria. The criteria can either be enabled or disabled. A character like $ would make the disabling so much easier.

Actually this works fine: var para = ' { "Parameter" : { "ID" : "5", "Name" : "Peter" } }' $.ajax({ type: "POST", contentType: "application/json", data: para, url: url success: success }); But I don't want to pass the data parameter as String and I think it should be possible to pass ist as array in any way.     I have set 'max_prepared_transactions' to 20 in the local postgres.config and yet the transaction fails with the following error trace (but only on Linux). Since in Windows the same code works seamlessly I am wandering if this isn't an issue of permission. What would be the solution?     Hi, I have a bit of code which loads data from a stored procedure in MS SQL Server and then loads the data to a datagridview, which works fine. What i want is for the code that connects / loads the data to sit in my Database Class and then everything associated with the datagridview to be stored in my Form but i am having problems passing the contents of the bindingsource over to the Form from the Database Class.   • I want to merge two PostScript Documents, pagewise. How?

    hello, i have a tricky question, so i need to describe my problem: i need to print 2-sided booklets (a third of a paper) on normal paper (german A4, but letter is okay also) and cut the paper afterwards. The Pages are in a Postscript Level 2 File (generated by an ancient printer driver, so no chance to patch that, except ps2ps) generated by me with the ancient OS's Printing driver facilities (GpiMove, GpiLine, GpiText etc). I do not want to throw away two-thirds of the paper, so my idea is: Take file one, two and three, merge them (how?) on new double-sided papers by translate/move file two and three by one resp. two thirds and print the resulting new pages. If it helps, I can manage to print one page of the booklet per file. I cannot "speak" postscript natively, but I am capable of parsing and merging and manipulating files programmaticly. Maybe you can hint me to a webpage. I've read through the manuals on adobe's site and followed the links on www.inkguides.com/postscript.asp Maybe there are techniques with PDF that would help? I can translate ps2pdf. Thanks for help Peter Miehle PS: my current solution: i.e. 8 pages: print page 1, 4 and 7 on page one, 2,5,8 on page two and 3,6,blank on page three, cut the paper and restack. But i want to use a electrical cutting machine, which works better with thicker stacks of paper.

  • Exclude string from wildcard in bash

    Hi, I'm trying to adapt a bash script from "Sams' Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours" which is a safe delete command called rmv. The files are removed by calling rmv -d file1 file2 etc. In the original script a max of 4 files can by removed using the variables $1 $2 $3 $4. I want to extend this to an unlimited number of files by using a wildcard. So I do: for i in $* do mv $i $HOME/.trash done The files are deleted okay but the option -d of the command rmv -d is also treated as an argument and bash objects that it cannot be found. Is there a better way to do this?     Hi, I'm having a problem with NSUserDefaults. I've followed the steps in the books as closely as I can for my app, but still get the same problem. I am getting a *** -[NSUserDefaults integerForKey:]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x3b375a0 error when I try and load in the settings.   • Dynamic Google Maps API InfoWindow HTML Content

    I am working in Flash Builder 4 with Google Map's ActionScript API. I have created a map, loaded some custom markers onto it and added some MouseEvent listeners to each marker. The trouble comes when I load an InfoWindow panel. I want to dynamically set the htmlContent based off of information stored in a database. The trouble is that this information can change every couple of seconds and each marker has a unique data set so I can not statically set it at the time I actually create the markers. I have a method that will every minute or so load all of the records from my database into an Object variable. Everything I need to display in the htmlContent is contained in this object under a unique identifier. The basic crux of the problem is that there is no way for me to uniquely identify an info window, so I can not determine what information to pull into the panel. marker.addEventListener(MapMouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, function(e:MapMouseEvent):void { showInfoWindow(e.latLng) }, false, 0, false); That is my mouse event listener. The function I call, "showInfowindow" looks like this: private function showInfoWindow(latlng:LatLng):void { var options:InfoWindowOptions = new InfoWindowOptions({title: appData[*I NEED A UNIQUE ID HERE!!!*].type + " Summary", contentHTML: appData[*I NEED A UNIQUE ID HERE!!!*].info}); this.map.openInfoWindow(latlng, options); } I thought I was onto something by being able to pass a variable in my event listener declaration, but it simply hates having a dynamic variable passed through, it only returns the last value use. Example: marker.addEventListener(MapMouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, function(e:MapMouseEvent):void { showInfoWindow(e.latLng, record.unit_id) }, false, 0, false); That solution is painfully close to working. I iterate through a loop to create my markers when I try the above solution and roll over a marker I get information, but every marker's information reflects whatever information the last marker created had. I apologize for the long explaination but I just wanted to make my question as clear as possible. Does anyone have any ideas about how to patch up my almost-there-solution that I posted at the bottom or any from the ground up solutions? Thanks in advance, Peter Hanneman

    Man, I am still not able to save a picture when I send an intent asking for a photo to be taken. Here's what I am doing: Make a URI representing the pathname android.content.Context c = getApplicationContext(); String fname = c.getFilesDir().getAbsolutePath()+"/parked.jpg"; java.io.File file = new java.io.File( fname ); Uri fileUri = Uri.fromFile(file); Create the Intent (don't forget the pkg name!) and start the activity private static int TAKE_PICTURE = 22; Intent intent = new Intent(android.provider.MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE ); intent.putExtra("com.droidstogo.boom1." + MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, fileUri); startActivityForResult( intent, TAKE_PICTURE ); The camera activity starts, and I can take a picture, and approve it. My onActivityResult() then gets called. But my file doesn't get written. The URI is: file:///data/data/com.droidstogo.boom1/files/parked.jpg I can create thumbnail OK (by not putting the extra into the Intent), and can write that file OK, and later read it back). Can anyone see what simple mistake I am making? Nothing obvious shows up in the logcat - the camera is clearly taking the picture. Thanks, Peter

  • Why is Collection<String>.class Illegal?

    I am puzzled by generics. You can declare a field like: Class<Collection<String>> clazz = ... It seems logical that you could assign this field with: Class<Collection<String>> clazz = Collection<String>.class; However, this generates an error: Syntax error on token ">", void expected after this token So it looks like the .class operator does not work with generics. So I tried: class A<S> {} class B extends A<String> {} Class<A<String>> c = B.class; Also does not work, generates: Type mismatch: cannot convert from Class<Test.StringCollection> to Class<Collection<String>> Now, I really fail to see why this should not work. I know generic types are not reified but in both cases it seems to be fully type safe without having access to runtime generic types. Anybody an idea? Peter Kriens
