• How can I get better at explaining complex software processes to developers?

  I'm really struggling with my software specs. I am not a professional programmer but enjoy doing it for fun and made some software that I want to sell later but I'm not happy with the code quality. So I wanted to hire a real developer to rewrite my software in a more professional way so it will be maintainable by other developers in the future. I read and found some sample specs and made my own by applying their structure to my document and wanted to get my developer friend to read it and give me advice. After an hour and a half he understood exactly what I was trying to do and how I did it(my algorithms,stack,etc.). How can I get better at explaining things to developers? I add many details and explanations for everything(including working code) but I'm unsure the best way I can learn to pass detailed domain knowledge(my software applies big data, machine learning, graph theory to finance). My end goal is to get them to understand as much as possible from the document and then ask anything they do not understand, but right now it seems they need to extract alot of information from me. How can I get better at communicating domain knowledge to developers?

  On one of my old computers I am having the problem of upgrading to windows 8.1 because my computer does not support PAE, NX, and SSE2. How was I able to install windows 8 in the first place? I heard the original requirements for windows 8.0 were PAE, NX, and SSE2. Anyone know a bypass for this on a machine already running windows 8? IMO 8.1 should have been released in the form of a service pack not an entirely new windows.

  We are going to be setting up two replicas of our DataMart and related databases, and our plan includes using Hyper-V VM's to handle the load. When creating the VM's, we cannot find specific requirements or recommendations for RAM/CPU power for read-only replicas. Our current Primary DataMart setup has 64GB RAM and Two Quad-Core procs, which so far has been adequate for our usage. What should be the server setup for replicas and SQL Server to adequately support the read-only usage?

  First, before I install OSQA on my dedicated server at hostgator, I want to know the requirements. I don't want to screw up my server so it's better to ask question first. I have read a lot of tutorial on the internet regarding Django but I want to clarify something before I proceed. On my dedicated server I don't use FCGI. Instead I use Mod SuPHP.   I am looking at Outlook for Mac (in Office 2011). I wanted to find out what versions of Exchange are supported, as well as whether MAPI is supported. I googled and also searched the Microsoft site. I also checked in wikipedia, but it was probably too soon. I found announcement about Outlook for Mac I found the system requirements on the official site, but they don't say anything on these topics. I saw some forum traffic saying: MAPI is not supported, but there was no attribution, so I won't bother to quote it. Can anyone point me to some official documents that address these concerns?

  1) What are keepalived's (physical/network) requirements? Does the two (or more) keepalived' nodes need to be connected to the same switch? (something related to broadcasting maybe). 2) Can keepalived nodes run on different networks, "internet" networks? 3) Is keepalived depend on the router? (as far as I understand, the virtual IP should point to the real router/switch that connects both nodes). 4) Is keepalived "service-independent"? - What is keepalived's involvement domain? IPs only? Or is it service/protocol oriented? - Does it deal ONLY with IP, or is it designed for HTTP for example? - In other words, can I use it for custom (network-based) app? 5) Have more than one failover server? If the answer for question #4 is "yes", i.e it depends on the service type, then is there any general alternative? Preferably easy to install/configure :)

I am trying to figure out the secure way to have my network settings The requirements are: VM1 is the working HOST, includes: esxi 5.1, vSphere, 4 clients (w2008r2 all) VM2 has esxi 5.1 installed, and a single machine with Veeam Backup and copy 6.5 - keeping a copy of VM1 clients on the VM2 internal storage (this solution is due to a very small budget - in case of failure on Host 1 - can redirect IP's) Only 2 VM clients require network address and access from the WWAN - ISP provides IP's range for them (with Gateway and DNS) I need connection to the iDrac's from my office (option to create a VPN-SSL tunnel) Connection to the vSphere appliances I want to be able to RDP to the VM clients The current configuration is that each host has the iDrac dedicated nic connected , and another (NIC #1) connected - with a static IP on 192.168.3.x The iDrac's have a static IP from the same network range (19.168.3.x) It will look something like this: My thoughts: On NIC#2 of both hosts I will connected a crossed cable I will give each VM clients that needs internet access a 2ndry VM network with the assigned IP from the ISP open only to web - can not access from the My Question: Should I give IP's (external) to the machines who DO NOT require WWAN Access? - I can't see a way to RDP to them directly if not. Should I use the crossed cable? or just plug NIC #2 to the switch? Will this setup even work? What do I need to verify? What Virtual nic's and/or switches should I create on the Hosts?

  Greetings! So, I just placed an order for a new server. The company recommended that I get a 3000W UPS. (!) As best as I could I calculated the following wattage consumption based on benchmarked data or datasheets provided by the manufacturers of each component: number watts **total watts** MoBo 1 240 240 CPUs (E5540) 2 80 160 RAID cards (3ware) 2 18 36 RAM (6x4GB) 6 3 18 DVD drive 1 7 7 floppy 1 2 2 RE4 drives 8 7 56 WD20 drives 8 6 48 Intel X25 SSD 2 0.15 0.3 total = 567 So that is for the PSU requirements only. The PSUs in the machine are a 720W for the master node and 800W each for two subsystems. That's a total of 2320W that can be delivered by these PSUs. But that is 4X the amount being consumed, at most, by the components. I didn't count case fans or the eSATA card (3W maybe?) or what the PSUs themselves require but assuming I double or triple my calculations I'm not even remotely close to the 3000W UPS I was suggested to get. They run at least $1100. I could get a 2000W for about $750 or a 1500W for $450 and still be well over my estimated power need. I don't think I need a whole lot of run time in the case of a power outage, maybe 20 minutes max, enough time to shutdown if the power doesn't come on within 5-10 minutes. Any thoughts? Am I off on my calculations? Did I overlook something major? If so what are your suggestions for a UPS? Thanks!

• Traceability with XSD

  I am trying to let my XML schema handle a little traceability functionality as I'm gathering requirements while I read through some functional specifications. (Not ideal for requirement management, but at least its a start.) What I'm doing is creating a <functionalSpec tag for each functional specification I am currently reading through. I create a <requirement tag for each requirement I find. Since I want to be able to trace where the requirement came from, I create a <trace element with the id of the <functionalSpec element. Instead of allowing myself to enter any plain-old-text in the <functionalSpecId tag, I want the XSD to validate and make sure that I only enter in an id that exists for an existing functional spec. My problem is coming in where it seems the XML Schema W3C Recommendations documentation says that what I want to do is not possible. (about 1/2 way down) {selector} specifies a restricted XPath ([XPath]) expression relative to instances of the element being declared. This must identify a node set of subordinate elements (i.e. contained within the declared element) to which the constraint applies. I'm using Oxygen to create this since I'm fairly new to XSD files, and it gives me the following error: E [Xerces] Identity Constraint error: identity constraint "KeyRef@1045a2" has a keyref which refers to a key or unique that is out of scope. So my question is does anyone know of a way that will allow me to use the same XML structure that I have below through using XSD? • WP7 Tips–Part I– Media File Coding Techniques to help pass the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Certification Requirements

  Overview Developing an application that plays media files on a Windows Phone 7 Device seems fairly straight forward.  However, what can make this a bit frustrating are the necessary requirements in order to pass the WP7 marketplace requirements so that your application can be published.  If you are new to this development, be aware of these common challenges that are likely to be made.  Below are some techniques and recommendations on how optimize your application to handle playing MP3 and/or WMA files that needs to adhere to the marketplace requirements.   Windows Phone 7 Certification Requirements Windows Phone 7 Developers Blog   Some common challenges are: Not prompting the user if another media file is playing in the background before playing your media file Not allowing the user to control the volume Not allowing the user to mute the sound Not allowing the media to be interrupted by a phone call  To keep this as simple as possible I am only going to focus on what “not to do” and what “to do” in order to implement a simple media solution. Things you will need or may be useful to you before you begin: Visual Studio 2010 Visual Studio 2010 Feature Packs Windows Phone 7 Developer Tools Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone Windows Phone Emulator Resources Silverlight 4 Tools For Visual Studio XNA Game Studio 4.0 Microsoft Expression Blend for Windows Phone Note: Please keep in mind you do not need all of these downloaded and installed, it is just easier to have all that you need now rather than add them on later.   Objective Summary Create a Windows Phone 7 – Windows Media Sample Application.  The application will implement many of the required features in order to pass the WP7 marketplace certification requirements in order to publish an application to WP7’s marketplace. (Disclaimer: I am not trying to indicate that this application will always pass as the requirements may change or be updated)   Step 1: – Create a New Windows Phone 7 Project   Step 2: – Update the Title and Application Name of your WP7 Application For this example I changed: the Title to: “DOTNETNUZZI WP7 MEDIA SAMPLE - v1.00” and the Page Title to:  “media magic”. Note: I also updated the background.   Step 3: – XAML - Media Element Preparation and Best Practice Before we begin the next step I just wanted to point out a few things that you should not do as a best practice when developing an application for WP7 that is playing music.  Please keep in mind that these requirements are not the same if you are playing Sound Effects and are geared towards playing media in the background.   If you have coded this – be prepared to change it:   To avoid a failure from the market place remove all of your media source elements from your XAML or simply create them dynamically.  To keep this simple we will remove the source and set the AutoPlay property to false to ensure that there are no media elements are active when the application is started. Proper example of the media element with No Source:   Some Additional Settings - Add XAML Support for a Mute Button   Step 4: – Boolean to handle toggle of Mute Feature Step 5: – Add Event Handler for Main Page Load   Step 6: – Add Reference to the XNA Framework   Step 7: – Add two Using Statements to Resolve the Namespace of Media and the Application Bar using Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Media; using Microsoft.Phone.Shell;   Step 8: – Add the Method to Check the Media State as Shown Below   Step 9: – Add Code to Mute the Media File Step 10: – Add Code to Play the Media File //if the state of the media has been checked you are good to go. media_sample.Play(); Note: If we tried to perform this operation at this point you will receive the following error: System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message=FrameworkDispatcher.Update has not been called. It is recommended that you implement the following class to your solution and implement this class in the app.xaml.cs file.   Step 11: – Add FrameworkDispatcher Features I recommend creating a class named XNAAsyncDispatcher and adding the following code:   After you have added the code accordingly, you can now implement this into your app.xaml.cs file as highlighted below.   Note:  If you application sound file is not playing make sure you have the proper “Build Action” set such as Content.   Running the Sample Now that we have some of the foundation created you should be able to run the application successfully.  When the application launches your sound options should be set accordingly when the “checkMediaState” method is called.  As a result the application will properly setup the media options and/or alert the user accordinglyper the certification requirements.  In addition, the sample also shows a quick way to mute the sound in your application by simply removing the URI source of the media file.  If everything successfully compiled the application should look similar to below.                 <sound playing>   Summary At this point we have a fully functional application that provides techniques on how to avoid some common challenges when working with media files and developing applications for Windows Phone 7.  The techniques mentioned above should make things a little easier and helpful in getting your WP7 application approved and published on the Marketplace.  The next blog post will be titled: WP7 Tips–Part II - How to write code that will pass the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Requirements for Themes (light and dark). • Space requirements of a merge-sort

  I'm trying to understand the space requirements for a Mergesort, O(n). I see that time requirements are basically, amount of levels(logn) * merge(n) so that makes (n log n). Now, we are still allocating n per level, in 2 different arrays, left and right. I do understand that the key here is that when the recursive functions return the space gets deallocated, but I'm not seeing it too obvious. Besides, all the info I find, just states space required is O(n) but don't explain it. • package issue with ubuntu 10.10 and passenger requirements

  I'm trying to get Passenger working with Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm running into a problem. It seems that the passenger installer is not recognizing the virtual package. I'm getting this error: Code: passenger-install-apache2-module ... * OpenSSL support for Ruby... not found ... And then it says, run this: * To install OpenSSL support for Ruby: Please run apt-get install libopenssl-ruby as root. When I run the above command, it refers to the libruby package: sudo apt-get install libopenssl-ruby Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Note, selecting 'libruby' instead of 'libopenssl-ruby' libruby is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 43 not upgraded. When I look at the details for libruby, it says it provides libopenssl-ruby: Code: Provides: libbigdecimal-ruby, libcurses-ruby, libdbm-ruby, libdl-ruby, libdrb-ruby, liberb-ruby, libgdbm-ruby, libiconv-ruby, libopenssl-ruby, libpty-ruby, libracc-runtime-ruby, libreadline-ruby, librexml-ruby, libsdbm-ruby, libstrscan-ruby, libsyslog-ruby, libtest-unit-ruby, libwebrick-ruby, libxmlrpc-ruby, libyaml-ruby, libzlib-ruby And when I rerun the passenger installer, it gives the same error: Code: passenger-install-apache2-module ... * OpenSSL support for Ruby... not found ... • Is basing storage requirements based on IOPS sufficient?

  The current system in question is running SBS 2003, and is going to be migrated on new hardware to SBS 2008. Currently I'm seeing on average 200-300 disk transfers per second total across all the arrays in the system. The array seeing the bulk of activity is a 6 disk 7200RPM RAID 6 and it struggles to keep up during high traffic times (idle time often only 10-20%; response times peaking 20-50+ ms). Based on some rough calculations this makes sense (avg ~245 IOPS on this array at 70/30 read to write ratio). I'm considering using a much simpler disk configuration using a single RAID 10 array of 10K disks. Using the same parameters for my calculations above, I'm getting 583 average random IOPS / sec. Granted SBS 2008 is not the same beast as 2003, but I'd like to make the assumption that it'll be similar in terms of disk performance, if not better (Exchange 2007 is easier on the disk and there's no ISA server). Am I correct in believing that the proposed system will be sufficient in terms of performance, or am I missing something? I've read so much about recommended disk configurations for various products like Exchange, and they often mention things like dedicating spindles to logs, etc. I understand the reasoning behind this, but if I've got more than enough random I/O overhead, does it really matter? I've always at the very least had separate spindles for the OS, but I could really reduce cost and complexity if I just had a single, good performing array. So as not to make you guys do my job for me, the generic version of this question is: if I have a projected IOPS figure for a new system, is it sufficient to use this value alone to spec the storage, ignoring "best practice" configurations? (given similar technology, not going from DAS to SAN or anything)

  Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) What would be the ideal machine for this (preferably AMD base chip) I'm not expecting the best performance out of this setup, just a decent one to host one drupal instance, one ASP.NET MVC (future, not now), and one Tomcat/Jetty instance. NB: If you have a better suggestions on the setup, feel free to let me know (e.g: maybe Drupal and Tomcat can be in one instance but move the database to another instance instead of 1 instance map to 1 webserver and 1 dbserver). • Windows 2008 R2 Server Core Disk Space Requirements/Recomendations

  I'm in the preparation stage to roll out a few Windows 2008 R2 Server Core in my VMware ESX environment. In looking over the documentation it looks like Server Core can operate in a little as 6.5 GB of hard drive space. Less disk space required. A Server Core installation requires only about 3.5 gigabytes (GB) of disk space to install and approximately 3 GB for operations after the installation. I am curious as to anyone’s real world experience and recommendations with regard to this requirement. Is it realistic? A little bit about our environment: Less than 25 users, and around 75 computers/servers in our current AD system. These systems will be responsible for normal AD operations and print servers for 5 printers - nothing to big here.

• System Requirements of a write-heavy applications serving hundreds of requests per second

  NOTE: I am a self-taught PHP developer who has little to none experience managing web and database servers. I am about to write a web-based attendance system for a very large userbase. I expect around 1000 to 1500 users logged-in at the same time making at least 1 request every 10 seconds or so for a span of 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week. So it's more or less 100 requests per second, or at the very worst 1000 requests in a second (average of 16 concurrent requests? But it could be higher given the short timeframe that users will make these requests. crosses fingers to avoid 100 concurrent requests). I expect two types of transactions, a local (not referring to a local network) and a foreign transaction. local transactions basically download userdata in their locality and cache it for 1 - 2 weeks. Attendance equests will probably be two numeric strings only: userid and eventid. foreign transactions are for attendance of those do not belong in the current locality. This will pass in the following data instead: (numeric) locality_id, (string) full_name. Both requests are done in Ajax so no HTML data included, only JSON. Both type of requests expect at the very least a single numeric response from the server. I think there will be a 50-50 split on the frequency of local and foreign transactions, but there's only a few bytes of difference anyways in the sizes of these transactions. As of this moment the userid may only reach 6 digits and eventid are 4 to 5-digit integers too. I expect my users table to have at least 400k rows, and the event table to have as many as 10k rows, a locality table with at least 1500 rows, and my main attendance table to increase by 400k rows (based on the number of users in the users table) a day for 3 days a week (1.2M rows a week). For me, this sounds big. But is this really that big? Or can this be handled by a single server (not sure about the server specs yet since I'll probably avail of a VPS from ServInt or others)? I tried to read on multiple server setups Heatbeat, DRBD, master-slave setups. But I wonder if they're really necessary. the users table will add around 500 1k rows a week. If this can't be handled by a single server, then if I am to choose a MySQL replication topology, what would be the best setup for this case? Sorry, if I sound vague or the question is too wide. I just don't know what to ask or what do you want to know at this point.

• Looking for personal scheduling software / todo list with rather particular requirements

  I've been scouring the web for a couple of (my boss') hours, looking for a piece of software that can organize my tasks in two ways. First, I have a list of bullet points / todo items I can do at any given time. Think of stuff like solve issue X, ask X about Y, write documentation about Z, etcetera. Second, I have a number of running projects I'd like to organize better, as in schedule for a certain part of a day of the week. Ideally (I think), my day would be organized as 50% spent on projects and 50% on the other small things. Now, I don't like most calendar applications (such as Outlook & friends), their UI is too 'official', not really easy to move stuff around (in my experience). I don't like most todo lists either, too static and things. I like new, fast and hip software. I've looked at GTD versions of Tiddlywiki, and I like mGSD for one particular feature. You can make lists of tasks and basically give them one of three statusses - Now (nothing required, you can do it right away), Waiting (you need someone or something before you can work on this), or the most gratifying of all, Done. I like that feature because it's a simple todo list, but indicates more accurately the things you can do right now and the things you depend on someone else for to do. Anyways, that's just a small aspect of that program - most of the other things in there I can't find a particularly good use for. If there's something like that (maybe something that works even snappier, cleaner UI), combined with an easy to use bit of scheduling software (optionally separated into two applications, but preferrably not), I think I'd like that. (Besides something like that, I also use several instances of Trac to monitor tasks and bugs and things for the various clients and projects I have to serve, and TaskCoach to monitor the amount of time I spend on each task / each client. An easy / low-maintenance time tracking software would be neat too) Of course, the software has to be free to use. I don't like shareware, trials, limited software and the like. I could develop my own too, but I'm lazy like that and there's a dozen other projects I'd like to do in my free time (neither of which I actually do). Edit: I like David Seah's printable CEO stuff, if something like that (with some video game / instant achievement / gratification) exists in software, it'd be awesome.

• 7.0.1 and Photoshop openGL requirements

  Hi, I'm running Workstation 7.0.1 on a 64-bit Linux host, with a Vista guest, and the Aero theme works a treat - full marks for getting that working! However, when running Photoshop there are some operations (like interactive image rotation) that seem to require graphics support that VMWare doesn't have - attempting to do these operations returns an error that the functionality "only works with OpenGL enabled windows". It seems that it needs OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 which I gather are supported under Workstation 7 - do I need to put in additional settings of some kind? I've updated to the right version of VMWare Tools, and the video driver is listed as "VMWare SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)". I see that in 6.5 there was an option to switch between the beta WDDM driver and the SVGAII driver, but I assume the features of both of these would have been merged into the standard driver in 7.0?
