  • Part 1: What are EBS Customizations?

    - by volker.eckardt(at)oracle.com
Everything what is not shipped as Oracle standard may be called customization. And very often we differentiate between setup and customization, although setup can also be required when working with customizations. This highlights one of the first challenges, because someone needs to track setup brought over with customizations and this needs to be synchronized with the (standard) setup done manually. This is not only a tracking issue, but also a documentation issue. I will cover this in one of the following blogs in more detail. But back to the topic itself. Mainly our code pieces (java, pl/sql, sql, shell scripts), custom objects (tables, views, packages etc.) and application objects (concurrent programs, lookups, forms, reports, OAF pages etc.) are treated as customizations. In general we define two types: customization by extension and customization by modification. For sure we like to minimize standard code modifications, but sometimes it is just not possible to provide a certain functionality without doing it.Keep in mind that the EBS provides a number of alternatives for modifications, just to mention some:Files in file system    add your custom top before the standard top to the pathBI Publisher Report    add a custom layout and disable the standard layout, automatically yours will be taken.Form /OAF Change    use personalization or substitutionUsing such techniques you are on the safe site regarding standard patches, but for sure a retest is always required! Many customizations are growing over the time, initially it was just one file, but in between we have 5, 10 or 15 files in our customization pack. The more files you have, the more important is the installation order.Last but not least also personalization's are treated as customizations, although you may not use any deployment pack to transfer such personalisation's (but you can). For OAF personalization's you can use iSetup, I have also enabled iSetup to allow Forms personalizations to transport.Interfaces and conversion objects are quite often also categorized as customizations and I promote this decision. Your development standards are related to all these kinds of custom code whether we are exchanging data with users (via form or report) or with other systems (via inbound or outbound interface). To cover all these types of customizations two acronyms have been defined: RICE and CEMLI.RICE = Reports, Interfaces, Conversions, and ExtensionsCEMLI = Customization, Extension, Modification, Localization, IntegrationThe word CEMLI has been introduced by Oracle On Demand and is used within Oracle projects quite often, but also RICE is well known as acronym. It doesn't matter which acronym you are using, the main task here is to classify and categorize your customizations to allow everyone to understand when you talk about RICE- 211, CEMLI XXFI_BAST or XXOM_RPT_030.Side note: Such references are not automatically objects prefixes, but they are often used as such. I plan also to address this point in one other blog.Thank you!Volker

  • Standard ratio of cookies to "visitors"?

    - by Jeff Atwood
As noted in a recent blog post, We see a large discrepancy between Google Analytics "visitors" and Quantcast "visitors". Also, for reasons we have never figured out, Google Analytics just gets larger numbers than Quantcast. Right now GA is showing more visitors (15 million) on stackoverflow.com alone than Quantcast sees on the whole network (14 million): Why? I don’t know. Either Google Analytics loses cookies sometimes, or Quantcast misses visitors. Counting is an inexact science. We think this is because Quantcast uses a more conservative ratio of cookies-to-visitors. Whereas Google Analytics might consider every cookie a "visitor", Quantcast will only consider every 1.24 cookies a "visitor". This makes sense to me, as people may access our sites from multiple computers, multiple browsers, etcetera. I have two closely related questions: Is there an accepted standard ratio of cookies to visitors? This is obviously an inexact science, but is there any emerging rule of thumb? Is there any more accurate way to count "visitors" to a website other than relying on browser cookies? Or is this just always going to be kind of a best-effort estimation crapshoot no matter how you measure it?

  • Firefox: how to block cookies by name, not by site?

    - by deepc
Firefox allows to block all cookies on a site-by-site level. This is ok for the most part. However, it does not help with blocking only Google Analytics cookies. The GA cookie names start with __ut. Is there a Firefox add-on which can block all __ut* cookies? I know there are many cookie related add-ons for Firefox - but apparently all of them simply fine tune cookie site-by-site blocking, according to their descriptions. Hopefully I missed the one who can do this... I also know about Google's plugin to opt out of analytics. Installing a specific plug-in for that purpose (as opposed to an add-on) seems a bit overdone. Plus, I would have to trust Google with that and that is exactly what I don't.

  • jQuery cookie behaves differently on local machine vs production server

    - by user1810414
I'm setting a jQuery cookie for some site javascript effects. I'm setting expiration date to 30 days. On local development machine cookie expiration is set properly, whereas on production expiration is being set to end of session. After inspecting the created cookies with web develoer tools, everything is identical except production machine cookie is marked as "session cookie" and setting expiration is disallowed, while cookie created on local development machine is not set to "session" and expiration date is editable. Is there a way to make production machine cookie accept the expiration date? This is how I set the cookie: $.cookie('skip_animation','skip', 2592000); Using jQuery 1.6.4 (legacy site) All browsers behave the same way

  • Using wget to download pdf files from a site that requires cookies to be set

    - by matt74tm
I want to access a newspaper site and then download their epaper copies (in PDF). The site requires me to login using my email address and password and then it permits me to access those PDF URLs. I'm having trouble 'setting my session' in wget. When I login into the site from my browser, it sets two cookie values: [email protected] Password=12345 I tried: wget --post-data "[email protected]&Password=12345" http://epaper.abc.com/login.aspx However, that just downloaded the login page and saved it locally The FORM on the login page has two fields: txtUserID txtPassword and radiobuttons like this: <input id="rbtnManchester" type="radio" checked="checked" name="txtpub" value="44"> Another button: <input id="rbtnLondon" type="radio" name="txtpub" value="64"> If I post this to the login.aspx page, I get the same output wget --post-data "[email protected]&txtPassword=12345&txtpub=44" http://epaper.abc.com/login.aspx If I do: --save-cookies abc_cookies.txt it doesnt seem to have anything other than the default content. For the last if I do --debug as well it says: ... Set-Cookie: ASP.NET_SessionId=05kphcn4hjmblq45qgnjoe41; path=/; HttpOnly ... Stored cookie epaper.abc.com -1 (ANY) / <session> <insecure> [expiry none] ASP.NET_SessionId 05kphcn4hjmblq45qgnjoe41 Length: 107253 (105K) [text/html] Saving to: `login.aspx' ... Saving cookies to abc_cookies.txt. However, abc_cookies.txt shows ONLY the following: # HTTP cookie file. # Generated by Wget on 2011-08-16 08:03:05. # Edit at your own risk. (Not sure why I'm not getting any responses on SO - perhaps SU is a better forum - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7064171/using-wget-to-download-pdf-files-from-a-site-that-requires-cookies-to-be-set) EDIT 1 C:\Temp>wget --cookies=on --keep-session-cookies --save-cookies abc_cookies.txt --post-data "txtUserID=abc%40gmail.com&txtPassword=password&txtpub=44&chkbox=checkbox&submit.x=48&submit.y=7" http://epaper.abc.com/login.aspx --debug SYSTEM_WGETRC = c:/progra~1/wget/etc/wgetrc syswgetrc = C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuWin32/etc/wgetrc DEBUG output created by Wget 1.11.4 on Windows-MinGW. --2011-08-18 08:15:59-- http://epaper.abc.com/login.aspx Resolving epaper.abc.com... seconds 0.00, 999.999.99.99 Caching epaper.abc.com => 999.999.99.99 Connecting to epaper.abc.com|999.999.99.99|:80... seconds 0.00, connected. • User/browser fingerprinting without cookies

    - by Art
I'm sure that many of you have heard about this: http://panopticlick.eff.org/ It's a way to form a somewhat unique fingerprint of a web site visitor based on information about their browser, fonts, plugins, etc... Does anyone know of a library (python!?) to do this? I'd like to allow for visitors to vote on a poll without having to have an account...

  • How to set cookies with redirect in Pylons

    - by user136589
In light of the cookie-handling bugs affecting Safari and Chrome (see this thread), and Pylons implementation of redirect_to as an exception, is it possible to reliably set a tracking cookie and redirect at the same time? Is the META refresh method looked down upon?

  • How to deal with arrays of data in cookies

    - by peter
Hi all, I want to store data in a cookie and I am not exactly sure how I will go about it. The data is the UserName, and Password values for the users that are logging into a website, e.g. sometime like this UserName = bob, Password=Passw0rd1 UserName = harry, Password=BLANK UserName = george, Password=R0jjd6s What this means is that bob and george logged into the site and chose to have their password remembered, but harry chose for his password not to be remembered. So on the login dialog a dropdown will be present with all the usernames in it 'bob', 'harry', 'george'. If they select the username bob the password will automatically be filled in, etc. So how does that information need to be stored in the cookie? Like it is above, or does it have to be, UserName1 = bob, Password1=Passw0rd1 UserName2 = harry, Password2=BLANK UserName3 = george, Password3=R0jjd6s Are the username and password values actually stored in the same cookie, or is each piece of data separate? Any information would be good.

  • Dynamically manipulate php cookies with javascript/jquery

    - by pundit
Hi guys, I'm currently building a dynamic menu bar(vertical and horizontal). in the default position its vertical. the user have the option to show the horizontal position and hide and vertical. I am currently doing that with javascript/ jquery. in order to keep the menu bar in the horizontal position i am keeping a count with a cookie. the problem is that when i use the click function in javascript i want to change the value of the cookie. i have no knowledge of how to do this. Can anyone assist me with this. all help would be appreciated. <?php setcookie('menu', 1, time()+(86400)); ?> $(document).ready(function() { $('#temp').hide(); if(<?php echo $_COOKIE['menu'];?> == 1){ $('#topmenu').hide(); $('#sidemenu').floating().dropShadow().floating(); $('#sidemenu_bottom').hide(); }else{ $('#topmenu').show(); $('#topmenu').dropShadow(); $('#sidemenu').hide(); $('#sidemenu').removeShadow(); } $('#move').click(function(){ $('#sidemenu').hide("drop",{},2000); $('#sidemenu').removeShadow(); $('#topmenu').show(); $('#topmenu').dropShadow(); $('#sidemenu_bottom').show(); $('#sidemenu_bottom').floating().dropShadow().floating(); }); }); This is what i have so far and the default cookie is working as well as the javascript. its just to change the cookie value now. thanks.

  • PHP, We have sessions, and cookies....I love cookies, but they are blowing my mind right now.

    - by Matt
I am not sure how to go about accessing the variable I need to set on a cookie... I was thinking about using the $_POST global but I dont know how based on my design if it will work. I am using a master page type design seperating index.php from my function includes and database information and individual pages (that will be returned to an include in index.php based on a $_GET) Okay so back to my question. What is the most efficient way to set a cookie on a design that has a main page that everything will branch from. How would I pull the value. Is $_POST a good enough way to go about it? Also...by saying it must be the first thing sent...does that mean I cannot run any serverside scripts before that? I could definately utilize a login query I think but I dont want to write code just to be dissapointed based on my lack of time and knowledge. I did search for answers...I know this most likely feels like a generic question that could be answered in a difference place...but I know I will get an accurate and professional answer here...so I dont want to bet on the half answers I found otherwise. Of course I will sanitize everything and not store any sensitive information (passwords, address, phone,or anything really for that matter besides some kind of session ID and the username) If this is confusing I am sorry but I am on a gov computer...and they lock these tighter than ft knox...so getting my code on here will be a chore until I get back to my room. Thanks, Matt

  • authlogic without cookies, how?

    - by Alexandr Borisov
G'day, I am developing server application with Ruby on Rails and I'd like to store session token in each request's body. For example {"token":"asdkjahsdoahgfblkasblbag"}. And I am stuck, really don't know how to configure authlogic to handle token from params, not via cookie. And how to prevent "set-cookie" header sending? Thanks, Alexandr

  • Client side page permissions - Javascript / jquery / cookies / other?

    - by Ozaki
TLDR Using plain HTML / Javascript. Want to block access to some pages (doesn't have to be super secure just to stop some peeking eyes). I thought of simply doing this by setting a cookie for each page they are allowed to visit with a value of true but thats a bit messy. Although it would work. Is there a way to set an array of values to a cookie so I can read the cookie and if a name of a page is in there then allow access with an IF statement or so on each of my pages. If they dont have the cookie just to replace my #content (entirepage) to "sorry no" etc. For example: $.cookie("Access","page1, page2, page3",{ expires: 1 }); Am already using JQuery, Jquery cookie. etc. I am up for anyway of doing this cookie idea is just an example So what do you think would be the best / most efficient way of managing this?

  • .Net System.Net.HttpWebRequest & Authentication Cookies

    - by James
I would like to know if the following is possible: As part of the PageLoad of an ASP.Net page request: Use HttpWebRequest (POST) to make a request to a forms authentication webpage of a different web application Examine the response to see if the authentication succeeded (identifiable if an authentication cookie has been set) If it fails, then finish the ASP.Net page request, which will display a message saying "couldn't auto-login" or some such thing If success, then instead of completing the ASP.Net page lifecycle, use "Response.Write" to send the response from the HttpWebRequest back to the browser (thus essentially displaying the webpage from the HttpWebRequest) If the above is possible, then, is there also a way to transfer the authentication cookie from the HttpWebResponse to the requesting browser? My gut feeling is probably not - but if this is the case, then how do proxy servers handle such things? Is that not essentially what they are doing? Thanks for any help

  • Why won't asp.net create cookies in localhost?

    - by James McConnell
Okay, this is really kinda starting to bug me. I have a simple Web project setup located at: "C:\Projects\MyTestProject\". In IIS on my machine, I have mapped a virtual directory to this location so I can run my sites locally (I understand I can run it from Visual Studio, I like this method better). I have named this virtual directory "mtp" and I access it via http://localhost/mtp/index.aspx. All this is working fine. However, whenever I try to create a cookie, it simply never gets written out? I've tried this in FF3 and IE7 and it just plain won't write the cookie out. I don't get it. I do have "127.0.0.1 localhost" in my hosts file, I can't really think of anything else I can do. Thanks for any advice. James

  • IE8 blocking JavaScript Cookies

    - by ossreleasefeed
Hey there folks, Here is one that is throwing me for a loop. I am trying to set a simple cookie that has one name:value pair on IE8. Tested on FF and it works fine. IE8 keeps blocking it. I have read about the P3P stuff and created a basic P3P doc, no errors reported by the IBM tool, and added the following on all pages: <meta http-equiv="P3P" CP="CAO DSP COR PSDa CONi TELi OUR STP COM NAV"><link rel="P3Pv1" href="/w3c/p3p.xml"></link> The code I use to set the cookie is as follows: function setCompatibilityCookie(c_name, value, expiredays) { var exdate = new Date(); exdate.setDate(exdate.getDate() + expiredays); document.cookie= c_name + "=" + escape(value) + ((expiredays==null) ? "" : ";expires=" + exdate.toUTCString());} Any ideas why IE8 keeps blocking me from setting this cookie? Thank you, Schalk
